Police Crime Board Awards

More than 1,600 people took to the streets of Grimsby on Sunday and the town looked great from the starting line outside the town hall to the finish in People’s Park.

Colleagues working alongside Humberside Police were last week praised for their efforts in supporting vulnerable young people from across the region.

Young People’s Support Service (YPSS) Practitioner Rachel Connor, Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) Blue Door’s Kirsty Hodges and social worker Nicola Denford were nominated by YPSS interim head of service Paul Caswell, alongside colleagues from the police, for their ‘dedicated contribution to safeguarding children and young people of North East Lincolnshire.’

Two Project Springboard clients have praised Community Learning Services (CLS) staff for giving them a chance to grow and develop their careers.

Daniel Hill and Amber Bendell began working with CLS in April, as part of Project Springboard – a scheme that provides intensive support to get young people into work, education or training.

The project aims to bring clients out of the benefits system and help them with mental health, healthy living, housing support and more.

Daniel, now working as an apprentice with CLS, said: “I’m loving every minute of my apprenticeship. Springboard has been very supportive, and has helped me to decide the type of future I want for myself.”

Colleagues gin-tastic effort raises funds for charityMembers of the Economy and Growth team are toasting success after raising a whopping £800 for Women’s Aid with an event inspired by their drinking habits.

Maggie Campbell, Karen Goodwin and Deborah Cooper put together a ‘Gin-tastic Gin Night’ on Friday 1 July sponsored by Fever Tree Tonic.

More than 60 gin fans sampled some of the earliest-known gin recipes from a collection of 16 craft gins, heard a talk on the history of the drink, followed by a quiz and auction.

Wasting Away?....

Amber, who has now begun a full time apprenticeship with Toyota, said: “Springboard has helped me to develop a lot of key skills required in the workplace.

“I got a lot more interviews, and now I’m in full-time employment.”

Rhonda Herle, Springboard Advisor, said: “I am really proud of Daniel and Amber, and I believe that their stories can inspire other young people in our area.

“Not everybody knows what they want to do when they leave school or college, and we need to show that Springboard is there to help should they need it.”

From left, Karen Goodwin, Maggie Campbell and Deborah Cooper showcase just some of the gins available on the night.

Karen Goodwin said: “We decided to organise the event in response to a fundraising appeal from Women’s Aid, marking the charity’s 40 year anniversary.

“The charity is asking individuals to pledge to raise £40 for the charity, as they always need to boost their services with the support of fundraising.

“The response was overwhelming, and we are so grateful for the support. The events success has sparked discussions over a ‘Gin-tastic 2’. Information will be released later this year, and we urge fellow gin lovers to get in touch for updates!”

From left: Shaun Webster, Robert Williamson and Paul Hollis pose with their recycling boxes.

In a new regular feature for Vision, waste and garage manager Chris Dunn has penned a six-weekly column on all things waste-related.Recycling Week begins from 12 September 2016 so now is a good time to get involved. Ask yourselves “what do I recycle?” and “what else can I recycle?” We know what you’re thinking. “Oh no, not more rubbish about rubbish, I do my bit already and cannot possibly recycle anymore”. Why not test yourself by walking around your home, checking your bins and asking yourself could this be recycled. Items that can be recycled:Bathroom Toothpaste boxes, toilet roll tubes, plastic shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap bottles, bathroom cleaners Kitchen

Food tins, glass bottles and food jars, cardboard packaging, washing-up liquid, bleach and surface cleaner bottles, aerosols, plastic drink bottles

BedroomDeodorant and hairspray aerosols, spray gel bottles.

Living roomEnvelopes, newspapers, cardboard packaging, tissue boxes, magazines

Top Tip! Making room for improvement Squash cans, plastic bottles and flatten cardboard. Make sure all aerosol cans are empty. Black food trays and plastic bags CANNOT be recycled as part of the kerb-side plastic bottle collection scheme.

Did you know if everyone in the UK recycled: • 1 toothpaste box, it would save the same amount of

energy to run 2,000 fridges for a year.• 1 aluminium air freshener aerosol it would save

enough energy to vacuum every home in North East Lincolnshire for the next 12 years.

By 2020 we aim to be a zero landfill authority. Together we can make a difference. For more information, visit:www.facebook.com/letswastelessnelchttps://mobile.twitter.com/NELCouncil
