IMPORTANT FLIGHT INFORMATIONAirline flight schedules from Australia to South America constantly change and are heavily booked in advance. Once you have decided to join this tour, please book immediately to ensure that we can obtain the best flight arrangements. Back Track has access to excellent flight deals and will ensure you have the most suitable flight arrangements available.

The Style of our HolidayOur Peru “journey” provides the perfect setting to step inside a world so fascinatingly different in many ways to our own. The history of the Inca Empire underpins our entire journey. We will immerse ourselves in the colour and excitement of present day Peru while exploring and learning about its fascinating history.

To ensure that we won’t be isolated from the local people, in all towns and cities, we mostly stay in family owned, small and comfortable hotels with private facilities. Breakfast is supplied daily and we will seek out interesting local restaurants for our lunch and dinner. Occasionally we provide a box lunch on days where we will not be able to purchase our own. If you join the trek to Machu Picchu, your accommodation for 3 nights will be in a spacious 2 person hiking tent with an individual self-inflating, insulated mattress. All meals are provided and served in the dining tent complete with tables and chairs. All camp duties are handled by your trekking crew of cooks guides and porters. A bowl of hot water for washing is provided each morning and in the evening on arrival at camp. Our trekking style has been described as a “hotel on feet”. For those not wishing to do the trek an alternate itinerary is provided on those days. Another highlight of our journey is our over night home stay with the Taquile Islanders.

Our main transport throughout will be by private chartered comfortable coach. We may also use other appropriate transport when required including a high speed boat, passenger ferry, mini bus, vans and the tourist train back from Machu Pichhu.

This journey is suitable for anyone in good health, sound fitness, a lively sense of fun and a spirit of adventure.

You will be escorted from Lima by Megan Davidson, who has researched and lead this holiday for many years. Megan is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and love for Peru with you. In Lima you will be joined by a second Back Track Team member, your local Peruvian guide who will travel with us throughout Peru and see us safely back on the plane in Cuzco. All our local guides and our trek cre w are committed to providing friendly professional service.

On the trek to Machu Picchu we will have a cook, guide and porters for support. In many of the major historical sights we will employ a specialist guide to explain the points of local interest.

Tour commences in Lima. If you arrive on the same flight as the tour leader, you will be met at the airport and transferred to the Hotel Antigua Miraflores, located in the more affluent coastal area of Lima which offers trendy cafes, restaurants and exciting nightlife. DAY 5: 28 SEPTEMBER, AREQUIPA

We leave the coast and commence our climb in to the Andes. Our destination is Arequipa “The White City” so called as its buildings shimmer in the sun, having been built from a local white volcanic rock. Arriving late afternoon we stay at La Hosteria. Arequipa is Peru’s second most important city. (B)

DAY 6: 29 SEPTEMBER, AREQUIPA

Today we explore this beautiful city on foot. The sites we will explore are all within easy walking distance from our hotel. On the list to see is the sensational Convent of Santa Catalina. It is “picture post card” beautiful, offers a respite from the outside world and view into a by-gone way of life. Also on the list is the Museo de Santuarios Andinos, aka “the mummy museum” and La Compania Church. We return to our hotel and a then enjoy a night out in Arequipa. (B)

DAY 7: 30 SEPTEMBER, CHIVAY

The scenery today is sensational as we head for the Colca Canyon. The beautiful snow capped El Misti 5822m (19,096ft) provides a spectacular back drop and we have every chance of viewing the “King of the Andes” - the mighty Condor. We stay tonight at Hosteria Pozo del Cielo in the small town of Chivay at the entrance to Colca Canyon. (BL)

DAY 9: 02 OCTOBER, TAQUILE ISLAND

Early this morning we transfer down to the port and take our charter cruise via the Uros Islands to our overnight stop on Taquile Island. The Uros Indians live on floating reed islands and even tourism has not eased their poverty. Small souvenirs purchased here will help them immensely.

Taquile is famous for its tranquility and believers in the powers of crystals travel here for it’s thought that this island and others in Lake Titicaca have unique mystical significance. On Taquile Island we stay overnight in the homes of the Islanders and enjoy their hospitality. (BLD)

DAY 10: 03 OCTOBER, PUNO

We have all the morning to explore the island before we take our charter boat back to Puno and the Balsa Inn. (BL)

DAY 12: 05 OCTOBER, CUZCO.

In the morning we have a trek orientation meeting for those doing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. After the meeting we head out on a walking tour of the old city. The afternoon is free time. (B)
