S ummer is officially here and pool season is upon us! We would like to take this opportunity to share some

important water safety tips from the American Red Cross with you and your family.

PRACTICE WATER SAFETY1. Teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

2. Never leave a young child unattended in a pool and do not trust a child’s life to another child or to floatation devises.

3. Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket around water.

4. When swimming, set specific rules for each individual based on swimming ability.

5. Designate a person to watch over children whenever they are in, on, or around, any body of water.

6. Always follow posted pool rules and review these rules with your children.

Summer Safety

KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO AN AQUATIC EMERGENCY1. If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in

preventing death or disability.

2. Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

3. Enroll in Red Cross water safety, first aid and CPR courses to learn what to do.

4. Have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit nearby.

Thank you for helping us make this a safe summer for everyone!

Caretaker Landscape Goes Purple with CCMC at Vistancia to Raise Awareness for Lupus

D id you notice our crews dressed in purple in May?

To support Put on Purple Day for Lupus Awareness Month, Caretaker Landscape and Tree Management and

CCMC at Vistancia turned purple on May 20th.

Lupus is a chronic, complex and prevalent autoimmune disease that affects more than 1.5 million Americans. Lupus is difficult to diagnose because its symptoms come and go, mimic those of other diseases, and there is no single laboratory test that can definitively identify the illness. Lupus can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys.

Michelle Phelps, PR& Marketing Manager, was diagnosed with Lupus in early 2013 and ever since then Caretaker Landscape has helped raise awareness each year for the disease. We are so grateful to partner with CCMC at Vistancia to help raise awareness for this disease.

“Words always seem to escape me this time of year... This is the 4th year the Caretaker Landscape and Tree Management team rallies behind me but the truth is they don’t just support me on this one day, month or walk day they support me every day. Thank you to this great team.” says Michelle Phelps.

The team also uses the day to honor; Robyn Bayer, the sister of Vice President of Construction, Todd Schneider, Brandi Howland our Fleet Administrator, and Natalie Myers, daughter in law of Stan Myers our IT System Manager.

Care To Know – July Pruning Tips: The best practices are to prune the least amount necessary and prune for legitimate reasons. How much to prune depends on the size, species, age, as well as your intentions.

Two good principles to remember--a tree or shrub can recover from several small pruning wounds faster than from a single large wound and avoid removing more than 25% of the canopy in a year.

Remember it is always best to have a plan. If you have any questions, please ask your Caretaker Professional.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions pertaining to the community’s parking policy. Please

review.

Q: Can I park my car on the street?

A: You can park on the street during the day between 5am and midnight. Overnight street parking is prohibited any time between midnight and 5am.

Q: Can I park anywhere on the street?

A: All cars must be parked in compliance with all city and state laws and codes. Avoid parking in front of stop signs and fire hydrants. Parking in bike lanes is also prohibited. Remember to keep cars off sidewalks and park so that cars in the driveway do not stick out into sidewalks.

Q: What happens if I park on the street between midnight and 5am?

A: You will receive a parking notice on the vehicle from the Association and a violation notice may be sent to you.

Q: What does it mean that the policy will be enforced per occurrence?

A: Each time a vehicle is observed in violation of the policy, a violation will be issued. This means that if a car is parked on the street for three days in a row, three violations will be written.

Parking notices left on the car will provide an opportunity for residents to know a violation has been issued and for the car to be moved.

Q: What is the fine for violating policy?

A: After two warnings have been issued, a $100 per occurrence will be placed on the account.

Q: What happens if I plan to have family or friends visit for a short period of time?

>>> COveNANTS COrNer

By Andrew Olson, Covenants Coordinator

Street Parking 101

A: Short term guest parking will be permissible but a permit must be obtained from the Association. Please notify the Association to note the account.

Q: What happens if I have an unforeseen situation where a car may need to be left on the street and it is the weekend or the office is closed?

A: Make sure you call Patrol at 480-313-2685.

Q: If I have a boat, RV or trailer, can I park it at my home?

A: All boats, RVs, trailers, etc, must be parked in enclosed garages; provided, however one boat or recreational vehicle may be temporarily parked completely in the driveway or on the street for not more than 24 hours, up to four times per calendar month.

Q: What if I don’t have enough space to park all of my vehicles?

A: We understand some residents may have a multigenerational home or simply several drivers in the home. If there are more vehicles than parking spaces at the house, residents may request a variance. However, ALL available parking spaces must be utilized by vehicles. This means that a two car garage and a two car driveway constitute four spaces.

Q: What if I my garage space is taken up by storage?

A: If cars are being parking on the street as a result of stored objects in the garage, the garage will need to be cleaned out. A list of all local storage companies available at the Association Office.

Q: What do I do if I receive a violation for a car that is not mine or my guests?

A: Immediately contact the Covenants Coordinator 623-215-8646 so that fines are not being accrued.

SCHOOL BELL

MYVISTANCIA.COM | JULY 2016 | 19

B etween the tee box and the green lies a number of different shots a golfer will have to take. Making sense of

these shots and how to approach each, is an essential part of golf course management.

Certain things such as correct club selection and aim greatly contribute to improving your game.

Distance & Choosing the Right ClubFirst and foremost, players must be aware of what they do well and what they do poorly. You can’t rely on past hits to predict the next shot. Believing you’ll always hit a seven iron 180 yards because you did once in your lifetime, does not mean it’ll go that far every time. Golfers must be realistic about distance in order to choose the right club. If the hole is long, ask yourself which club will give you the best chance of hitting the fairway, and play that one. It may not always be your driver.

Anytime you’re deciding on which club to hit, in addition to honest distance, take into consideration where the ball could land on a slight miss. Even the slightest miss could affect the ball by 10 yards or more. Play it safe with a little more club and swing with confidence.

Taking AimOnce you choose the correct club for your shot, choose a target.

Improving Your Game with Good Course Management

By Scott Foster, Head of Instruction & Player Development

What do you see when you stand in the tee box? Players should aim to retrain their brains to see where they want the ball to go rather than all of the places they don’t. You should recognize the dangers of the hole, a bunker to the left or a water hazard on the right, but focus more on where you want to land in the fairway.

When picking your target, be as specific as possible. Pick a house, tree, natural landmark, or something in the distance to aim towards. The more specific you are, the less severe a miss might be. Golf is all about managing the misses.

So, how do players get better at choosing the correct club and target? There are a few drills to practice if you’re out on the course late in the day (and not holding anyone up, of course).

• Play an entire hole with just one club. This will force you to get creative and learn how to use one club to hit a variety of shots.

• Playing with a friend? Tell them what your target is. Letting them know will help you to be more specific in your selection.

• As you approach the green, hit your shot a few different ways: one high, one low, and a putt. This will expand your arsenal of shots around the green.

As you play your next round, keep course management in mind and watch your game improve.

Make Summer in Peoria MemorableHere’s to a great summer, Peoria! We have you covered when it comes to the best in recreation programs, support services, events and amenities. Some of the things Peoria is known for most are its majestic landscape, forward-thinking and innovative vision. The recent efforts are highlighted in this month’s update.

Peoria Residents Dedicate Sunrise Mountain Preserve

Peoria residents recently gathered to dedicate the new Sunrise Mountain Preserve for the use of all future Peoria generations. The crowd that included hikers, bikers, eques-trian and nature enthusiasts rallied to mark the historic occasion. Last month, Peoria City Council approved the purchase of the western 85 acres of Sunrise Mountain, located at 91st Avenue and Happy Valley Road. Now the preserve will be open for citizen use and connected with Peoria’s trail system. The preserve will have an impact on health, recreation and quality of life, as well as add to property values and drive future economic investment. This is just the beginning of great things to come as the city continues to expand its open space preservation plan.

Have Fun in the Peoria SunWith the summer heating up, families will be spending more time around water. It is important that parents take the time to learn CPR. Also, remember to have constant eye-to-eye supervision of children whether in the backyard pool or a community pool. A child can slip out of sight and underwater in just a moment. Mesquite District Update

New Neighbors in Mesquite District

Mesquite residents will be welcoming a new neighbor this fall. Fry’s Marketplace plans to open its doors in November on the northwest corner of Happy Valley Road and Lake Pleasant Parkway. The 124,000 square-foot facility will include a Starbucks shop, sushi bar, Little Clinic, gas station and shaded parking with the installation of the Power Parasol. The Peoria location is one of six new Fry’s Marketplaces opening this year and the first location to open within the Mesquite District.

S ome of our citizens continue to be scammed by people who take advantage of our good nature. I have

asked the Peoria Police Department Northern Crime Analyst (Mike Self) to write this article to let our citizens know—if it is too good to be true it probably is!

You receive a letter, e-mail or phone call asking if you would like to make some extra money requiring very little time on your part and no monetary investment. This sounds like a great opportunity to get paid for something that you do everyday. The directions will be to respond to their inquiry. Upon speaking or corresponding with a person, you will be told that this is the process:

• You will receive a check in the mail for a specified amount. The check will allow you to purchase stipulated items along with a percentage to be kept by you. You are asked to returned the remaining balance via money order, cashier check or money gram to a specified address.

• They will tell you the purchase and return of check balance must be accomplished within 3 to 5 days of the initial check receipt.

• You will be directed to go to a local retailer and purchase a specified dollar amount of specific products, which you will pay for after the initial check is deposited in your bank account.

• You then send a money order, cashier check or money gram to the originator keeping the money you paid for the product plus a percentage for your services.

• You can keep the product that you purchased and do with it as you choose.

There are numerous legitimate “secret shopper” programs. However, these are completed on a contractual basis. Your first clue that this is a scam is when they tell you that the transaction must be completed within 3 to 5 working days or the check will be voided. The reason for this short time period is because once you deposit the check into your account most transactions take 5 to 7 days to be verified.

Be aware of:

• Any program or agency that cannot be verified on the internet for legitimacy.

• Short time periods, usually 3 to 5 days to complete the transaction.

• Any organization sending you a check for more than the agreed to funds and asking you to return the balance.

If it is too good to be true, it probably is! As always remember to close your garage doors, secure your valuables and lock your vehicles. The Peoria Police Department non-emergency number is 623-773-8311.
