Visteon Wins New Audio Program onMercedes Sprinter Commercial VanVisteon has secured a new program with Daimler to supply an entry­level DAB radio forMercedes’ Sprinter van. The Sprinter model represents the highest volume among theGerman automaker’s commercial vans with 200,000 vehicles rolling off the line annually. 

Visteon will supply two of the three radio options available across the Sprinter model range. 

Visteon's entry­level radio offers a dual tuner for improved radio reception and its connectivity features enable Bluetooth hands­freephone usage with phonebook accessibility and streaming of media files via Bluetooth (BT) or USB­C interface on a monochrome display.By downloading the appropriate app from Mercedes, an optional remote user interface allows content to double up from FM/DAB radio orinternet services on a BT­connected smartphone. 

The entry­level radio is expected to account for 50 percent of the Sprinter’s volumes, forecast to reach 100,000 units per year or 500,000units over the vehicle’s lifetime.

The second radio model ­ Visteon’s SmartCore™ Connect­5 (C5) ­ operates as a pure infotainment unit for the Sprinter vehicle line,configuring a more sophisticated infotainment solution. Based on the audio features within Visteon’s SmartCore™ domain controllerdevelopment with Daimler (MFA2), the C5 infobox offers infotainment features such as Wi­Fi, WLAN, Bluetooth, NFC, CarPlay,AndroidAuto, support of different tuners (FM, AM, HD, DAB, DRM) and operates as a media player.

Scheduled for start of production in early 2018, both radio platforms will launch in the Sprinter's global markets, with the main volumesexpected to be in Europe and North America. There may also be future potential to extend the program to cover other models in theDaimler van range, such as the Vito refresh in 2019 and new Mercedes Citan, due in 2020.

Visteon development was done at Yanfeng Visteon Electronics Technology (YFVET) in Shanghai, China, and manufacturing will takeplace at YFV Songjiang, located in the same city. The program is based on Visteon's Cheetah silverbox platform. Program andcommercial management will be led by the Daimler customer group team based in Karlsruhe, Germany.
