“My body has a strong magnetic healing energy flowing through it! With my own unique natural power, combined with spirit, Iam able to connect spiritually to anyone in the world!”

Healing is a natural gift that I have had all my life but only came to the full realisation in the late 90s. Since then it has beendeveloping at an almighty rate. Natural healing energy can be focused for all kinds of problems, especially where conventionalmedicine may have failed. Holistic healing and alternative therapies can help you restore your emotional, mental, spiritual andphysical wellbeing, as well as resolving past life issues and blockages.

Healing can be performed "hands on" or "remote".  Hands on is when I will physically lay my hands on various parts of a client’sbody and channel healing energy through and around the body.  Remote healing is done through deep meditation using an ancientbut very effective Shamanic way.  All you need to do is relax, accept and allow the energy to flow through your body.

Although I have my own methods of healing passed down to me, I have completed various courses over the years, including aShamanic Ama Deus Healing Course and a Kundalini Reiki Course, which has enabled me to become a registered InternationalNatural Healer at Master/Teacher level.   I have also received an Honours Diploma in Energy Anatomy.

Healing can be provided to people of all ages, including children, and also to pets and animals.  When giving healing to the veryelderly, young children or animals, one healing session will last no longer than 20-30 minutes and I will only channel gentleShamanic Healing energy.

Holistic Healing is a complementary therapy and is not an option to replaceconventional medicine. If your health is suffering in some way, you must always seekprofessional medical advice by a qualified Doctor or Specialist!

Memories of Old Poole by Tom Scott

I was born and lived in a small terraced cottagein Harbour Road Lower Hamworthy. It used tobe home to The Royal Naval Gunners that usedto man a battery of cannons facing seaward.Hence the title of my home was No. 1 BatteryCottage approximately fifty yards from theboundary stone, which is still in the same spotwhere it was erected in 1823.

I can’t think why it was named BroomhillBoundary Stone because there is no hill thereand it’s almost at sea level! The Stone wouldbecome a main feature every 3 years, Why? Toaccommodate the “Beating of the Bounds”which was abandoned duringthe war years, but has nowbeen revived.

What was the purpose of thisceremony? I shall attempt toexplain. There are about 3locations that map out thejurisdiction of Poole HarbourPort. Commencing at BroomhillStone, then on to Shag Rock atArne shore, Northaven Point, from there it extended intoPoole Bay and out to sea untilit reached the 42 gallon

“Humber Barrel” which was visible from thehighest sand dune at Sandbanks a distance of 3miles.

The Mayor who is also Admiral of the Port, plushis councillors and harbour commissionerswould arrive at the Ferry steps that weresituated between the then Shipwright Arms and

“J Bolson & Sons Shipbuilders” now the area isSunseeker.

These Dignitaries made their way on footalong Ferry Road to the first ritual performedat the Broomhill Boundary Stone. Theceremony began by the reading of a “Charter”then, as in old days, the local boys and girls

The BroomhillBoundary Stone

were subjected to the customary “Points andPins” which meant their hands were slappedand fingers pricked with a pin. The reasonbeing, they would never forget the Beating ofthe Bounds.

The cortège would return to the Ferry steps thenthe Mayor and Harbour Master would leavefollowed by a flotilla of boats to perform thesame ceremony at the boundary pointsmentioned.

When the event was held before World War 2there was dancing in the evening on the Quay

and we boys would scramble fornew pennies thrown by theMayor from the Old CustomsHouse balcony.

But the surrounding area andview has changed since I was aboy. Looking at the inscriptionson the stone, in the backgroundcould be seen the beauty ofPoole Harbour, Brownsea Islandand the Purbeck hills plus CorfeCastle, also a lovely little beach. Now the view is obscured by theChannel Ferry conglomeration

and from the opposite side the view consists ofSunseekers.

There is no trace of R.A. Newmans BlacksmithForge, air raid shelters, Hamworthy Engineering,J. Bolson & Sons, Stone Yard, the first PooleYacht Club House, James Bros, Poole Yacht Clubsfirst home which was a converted railwaycarriage, all the residential terraced houses andfinally the Ferryman (Tom Russel) and his rowingboat.

I hope to attend the next meeting of Beating ofthe Bounds at the Broomhill Stone.

See you there. Tom Scott

The menopause is the transitional change in a woman’s life when she begins to run out of eggs, usuallyoccurring between the ages of 45-55. Viewed positively it may be perceived as nature’s contraception, anatural rite of passage rather than an illness. Unfortunately for many women it feels very much like anillness, with symptoms ranging from hot flushes, insomnia, lack of energy, weight gain, poor memory, loss of libido, vaginal drynessand, understandably, irritability!

The symptoms should gradually diminish once the body has adjusted to the lower levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone. This adjustment is aided by the pituitary gland, which triggers other glands such as the adrenals, and also fat tissue to increase theirproduction of oestrogen. However adrenals can fail in this task if they are exhausted due to stress. Emotional and physical problemsresponsible for stress need to be dealt with by developing strategies to help relaxation. Gentle exercise, meditation and deepabdominal breathing (6-8 breaths a minute), twice daily, will help. Avoid refined sugary foods, caffeine, fizzy drinks, alcohol and hotspicy foods, which can also trigger hot flushes, and increase your intake of fresh, preferably organic, fruits and vegetables, especiallygreens which are high in calcium.

The herbs Astralagus root and Siberian ginseng help the body to deal with stress. They also regulate sugar levels and boost theimmune system. Wholegrains, legumes, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and salmon provide a good source of BVitamins, which are known to relieve stress. Vitamin D supplements may also be useful.

The menopause has not traditionally been a problem for East Asian women due to their relatively high intake of soya foods, includingtofu, miso, tamari and soya milk These contain substances called phyto-oestrogens, plant compounds similar to oestrogen, found alsoin lentils, peas and beans. They help to protect us from xeno-oestrogens – the chemicals found in plastics and pesticides.

A menopausal diet should also include oily fish, seeds and nuts, lecithin granules, yogurt and organic meat and eggs. The reason fororganic food is that it avoids adding any of the extra hormones which are given to farm animals.Agnus Castus, Black Cohosh and Dong Quai are the favourite herbs to ease hot flushes and night sweats, with Sage and Yarrow teaproving useful to some. The main homeopathic remedies are Sepia, Lachesis, Pulsatilla, Nat Mur and Sulphur but there are others. Ifsymptoms persist, a homeopath will prescribe a constitutional remedy or you may wish to try acupuncture.

Wild yam cream also has helped many to naturally balance their hormones. As there are so many natural solutions, hopefully you’llfind something to benefit you. Sue Blain, Naturopath

The Art of Shampooing

Any questions about fashion or beauty? email Julie: [email protected]: www.hairdresserspoole.co.uk/newsletter.htm

You may think I am stating the’ blooming obvious’ now. But atworst you may be doing actual damage to your hair & at the veryleast literally washing your money down the drain.

Many people believe their hair will only get clean if the whole head is a mass of lather. This is not necessary.Lather is an aesthetic by-product of shampooing, in other words we have been lead to believe that lots ofbubbles means clean. If you like lots of foam & it makes you feel good, fine, but do remember that as you reallydon’t need to use so much product you are literally washing your money away with the lather! If you wash yourhair daily one shampoo is enough. Unless of course your job means your hair gets really dirty every day or youuse lots of hair products, or it is naturally excessively oily. But then again there are gentle but deeply cleansingshampoos available these days that will clean your hair in one go without harming it. No I don’t mean babyshampoo. In fact just because a shampoo is suitable for babies does not make it good for your hair. On thecontrary they are usually very alkaline (this is what makes them non stinging) fine in case they get in babieseyes but damaging & stripping to the hair. So the last thing you should use if you want to protect your hairscondition & or colour is baby shampoo.

The other vital point about shampooing your hair at home is to read the instructions on the bottle. Yes I know ifit says use the size of a certain coin we think if that is good then twice the amount must be even better. Yes?NO! We are back to washing money down the drain when it’s shampoo, but if we are talkingconditioner/treatment then we could get the opposite of what we desire, as too much product can weigh the hairdown, the result – we think the product is rubbish!  If you are using a special formula shampoo for a hair orscalp problem, or just in general use, & the manufacturer tells you to leave the shampoo on your head for 3 - 5minutes, then that’s precisely what they mean. And with good reason, a great deal of research & huge amountsof money goes into formulating hair-care products & how to use them for ultimate results. So do follow theinstructions.

The Final RinseNever use excessively hot water to wash or rinse your hair because too much heat can damage the delicate hairshaft. It will also open up the pores on your scalp & if you suffer with greasy hair this will only make it worse.Use warm water for washing & warm or tepid water for rinsing. If you can stand it a cold rinse is great forclosing the hairs cuticle & will help to give it shine.

Where to shampoo your hairThe best way to wash your hair thoroughly is under running water, preferably in the shower. Washing your hairin the bath is definitely out unless the bath has its own shower attachment. It’s hardly hygienic & you certainlywill not be able to achieve a proper rinse by lying back in your own soapsuds.

Do I Need A Conditioner?

Short Hair  - if your hair is very short, you have it cut regularly & it is natural i.e.: no colour or perm, thenprobably not. Your hair has little chance of becoming damaged, or even dried out, as by keeping it short anydamage, should it occur for some reason, will soon be cut away.

Mid Length Hair – Yes you will need some form of conditioner, the ends of your hair could be 6 or 7 years old bynow. So it will have been subjected to climate changes, be it at home or on holiday, different product use &possibly some chemical damage.

Long Hair – Most definitely. In hair terms the ends of your hair are now old & have been subjected to the sameas when it was mid length only more so. Even if you have naturally dried it there will inevitably be damage. Plusyou will need to be able to comb through it after shampooing. Without using a conditioner you will quickly seewhy you need one. CONTINUE READING ONLINE www.hairdresserspoole.co.uk

Have you been told or do you think you’re too old to exercise?!Allow me to dispel this myth straightaway! Whatever your age, it is never too late to startan exercise programme to improve your strength, fitness, coordination, flexibility andmobility!Improved fitness & strength can occur at any age and can help enhance your energylevels and increase your ability to remain independently active for longer. Regularexercise can even help reduce your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and highblood pressure. It can also slow down the inevitable decrease in bone density and musclemass and improve muscular control, thus helping balance and coordination.Firstly, when starting a fitness programme you must:

1) Seek medical advice from your G.P. to see if there are any specific activities you should avoid, especially if you have any pre-existing conditions.2) Ensure any ongoing health problems are taken into full consideration when starting your new training regime and are worked with accordingly.3) Listen to your body and don’t ignore warning signs. If you feel something isn’t right, i.e. an unsuspected pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain etc. stop the exercise immediately and inform your doctor.4) Start gradually! Try just one exercise class a week. There are excellent 50+ classes here at The Junction for you to try for example! If this sounds too daunting to begin with, a ten minute slow walk once / twice a week would be a great start. I was told by an international sports lady that “It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish”, so treat increasing your fitness levels as an ongoing event rather than a sprint!

In part 2 I will provide you with more information about how to create a balancedexercise programme….

Spotlight On! Tracey Wood - Jobshop UK

Tracey Wood

With a passion for business and a genuine interest in people, TraceyWood, Director of Poole based recruitment agency, Jobshop UK, modestlysights her highly knowledgeable and innovative staff as one of thereasons her business continues to go from strength to strength.

Established fourteen years ago and run with Co-Director, Frances Miles,Jobshop UK specialise in commercial vacancies up to and includingmanagement level. Positions range from administration, secretarial, PA,receptionists, accounts staff, customer service, IT help desk, salesexecutives, as well as management positions.

“We’re a small team,” Tracey explains, “and we’ve become highly regardedand respected amongst our clients who range in size from small companiesof about six employees, to large international businesses – all of which arebased in the Dorset area.”

When setting up Jobshop UK back in 1997, one area Tracey felt otheragencies neglected was in treating clients and candidates with equalimportance.

“Our candidates are very important to us.” States, Tracey. “At Jobshop, we offer many benefits such CV andinterview advice, the chance to test their computer skills and typing speed and free computer training uponregistering. Unlike many other agencies, we always interview candidates face to face.”

“For our temporary employees, there is also the chance to be nominated ‘Temp of the Month’ or the even moreprestigious ‘Temp of the Year.’ Our candidates are included in parties, charity events and we always send thema birthday card! The Agency Workers Regulations come into force on October 1st which will give temporarystaff the same entitlements as permanent staff; yet another reason to look into temping as a serious option in

the current job market.”

In January 1999, the recession hit, causing many businessesto streamline their staffing, make redundancies and put anyexpansion plans on hold, leading to an inevitable dip in theemployment market.

“Like most businesses, the recession has affected us,” saysTracey, “Frances and I had to look very closely at our costsand sadly had to make two members of staff redundant. But,we’ve pulled through and are now seeing a substantialincrease in permanent vacancies, which is all very positive.”

In a world increasingly dominated by the internet, wheremany turn to their laptops or smartphones as the first port of call for information, Tracey is Internet sassyenough to understand the importance of being accessible to the cyber generation.

“We’ve had to look at keeping up to date with new ways of marketing our business, and this has led to usincreasing our Internet presence by way of having a Facebook business page and Twitter account, where newvacancies and photos of various Jobshop events are posted. We also have a company blog where we publish a

mixture of employment related news, charity eventsand free seminars that we regularly hold. It’s great toknow that people can keep up to date with us at thetouch of a button, and is yet another way we feelJobshop offers that little bit more to clients andcandidates alike.”

“These Lies Are Not Innocent” - Wendell Berry (1934 - )Farmer-philosopher Wendell Berry recommends a back-to-basics lifestyle, wherein people are content with simple but essential endeavours. He draws inspiration from British thinker C.P. Snow who, in a distinguished lecture at Cambridge University in 1959, bemoaned the fact that

fewer and fewer people were satisfied with ‘a humble job’. Consequently, “Postal services, railway services (were) likely slowly to deteriorate…”.

Picking up on concern in Life is a Miracle, Berry connects the problem with an educational system which puts unrealistic and unholy demandson the students. Lost is the dignity and the delight in addressing God-given and servant-minded tasks at hand.

Young people are being told, “You can be anything you want to be”. Every student is given to understand that he or she is being prepared for“leadership”. All of this is a lie.

Original discovery is not everything. You don’t, for instance, have to be an original discoverer in order to be a good science teacher. A highprofessional salary is not everything. You can’t be everything you want to be, nobody can. Everybody can’t be a leader, not everybody even

wants to be. And these lies are not innocent. They lead to disappointment. They lead to good young people to think that if they have anordinary job, if they work with their hands, if they are farmers or housewives or mechanics or carpenters, they are no good.

Life’s a Beach!By Bruce Grant-Braham

Former Mayor and also chairman of PooleTourism

Do you love Poole's beaches? I do,  and I have held thatemotion for a very long time.

One of my earliest family black and white photos has myparents - dad dressed in a tweed lounge suit complete withwaistcoat and myself in school blazer and cap - relaxing in the

beautiful sand in front of Sandbanks Lido as holidaymakers!

Yes, the current Chair of Poole Tourism first came to Poole as a tourist from Surrey, his family liked what theysaw, and many decades later we are still here!

In 2011 the Council wants to find ways of making the beaches all-year-round destinations, with distinctidentities responsive to beach users' needs. It is leading a process to shape the future of the beaches with thecreation of a Beach Master Plan. It should be pointed out that beaches in the harbour are not included as theyrequire a different strategy.

The Council acknowledges that Poole's current seaside environment isbeautiful, safe and reasonably accessible wanting any developments to behigh in quality and sympathetic in design. There needs, it says, to be theright balance of facilities, activities and events; delivered by a combinationof both public and private sector interests.

Existing research shows the most visited beach to be that at Sandbanksand the least Flaghead. In the research sample 70% visit all year round and7 days a week.

What do we do whilst we are on the beach? Walking and jogging (70%),sitting and relaxing (54%), visiting a cafe and eating out (36%) andenjoying a day out (32%) are the main beach activities. Half of those polled said the beaches were easy to get tobut, of course, means that the other half didn't.

Amongst the ideas and concepts being considered are longer cafe opening hours, lighting along the promenade, more out of season events, the need for a pub, more land and water sport provision, more short term beachlets and an increased number of BBQ areas.

Practically some of the existing facilities such as various beach conveniences need improved accessibility for allpotential users and that won't be controversial. The Tourism Management Board has asked that BournemouthCouncil - which is undertaking a similar exercise - be included in the consultation  so thinking is joined up. Afterall our two towns share a promenade fronting Poole Bay.

We have also reminded the Council that on a sunny summer's  day Sandbanks is clogged with cars and no morevisitors or residents can be squeezed on to the gridlocked roads.

I have a dream that visitors to the beaches could board a water taxi at Rockley Park or Boscombe Pier andarrive by boat.

Interestingly I remember when that black and white photo I mentioned at the start was taken in the 1950sthere was a movable jetty on wheels at Sandbanks that accommodated just such a facility.....

What do you think?"
