Volkswagen / Audi Electronic Parking Brake System (ECU 53) Since the VAG group introduced the ‘Electronic Parking Brake (53)’ system in 2003 it has become standard equipment on the A6 (4F), A8 (4E) and Passat (3C) models. This increased level of technology now demands the use of suitable diagnostic equipment to carry out routine service procedures such as brake pad replacement and caliper removal. To carry out any of the required functions related to the electronic parking brake system: Connect the tester to the vehicle diagnostic connector Switch ignition on Select Audi/Volkswagen from the main menu Select ‘(53) Parking Brake o Note: If the tester subsequently displays a ‘CAN gateway’ sub menu you will need to re-select ‘(53) Parking Brake’ to continue Service Functions – Pre-requisites Prior to carrying out Park Brake service functions the following pre-requisites should be met: Vehicle on level ground Read and clear and DTC’s Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged, connect constant output voltage supply if possible Cycle the Parking Brake On / Off using vehicle park brake button – Foot brake applied Ensure the Electronic Parking Brake is left in the Off position Select ‘Service Functions’ from the main system menu shown here. Press <ENTER> Service Functions - Deactivate/Open Rear Calipers Before service work can be carried out on the rear brakes it is essential to deactivate/open the rear brake calipers. � The following information screens will be displayed. Follow instructions and press <ENTER> to continue. The procedure will complete and the brake calipers will retract. Service work can then be carried out. It is possible to Exit ‘Electronic Parking Brake’ system and disconnect tester at this point.

Service Functions - Activate/Close Rear Calipers Following service work on the rear brakes it is essential to activate/close the rear brake calipers to enable normal operation.

� Select ‘3-EPB Activate/Close Rear Calipers’ from the Service Functions menu shown here. Press <ENTER> to continue.

� The following information screens will be displayed. Follow instructions and press <ENTER> to continue. The procedure will complete and the brake calipers will close.

After carrying out this procedure the steps below should be followed to ensure normal brake operation is re-instated:

� Read and Clear DTC’s � Exit ‘Electronic Parking Brake’ system and disconnect tester � Cycle ignition Off / On

Service Functions – Self Test The ‘Parking Brake’ module supports a self-test function. This function actuates the rear park brake calipers so that the system operation can be visibly checked..

� Select ‘1-EPB Function Test’ from the Service Functions menu shown here. Press <ENTER> to continue.

� The following information screens will be displayed. Follow instructions and press <ENTER> to continue. The ‘Function Test’ will automatically run and complete

Service Functions – A8 Check/Adapt Rear Pad thickness A special ‘Check/Adapt Pad thickness’ function is supported on the Parking Brake module when fitted to the Audi A8 model. To perform this function:

� Select ‘Adaption (10)’ from the main system menu � Select Channel 6 � The displayed value represents a calculated pad thickness in mm � Following pad replacement the value in Channel 6 must be set to represent new pad thickness
