Around the Club
Dear Members,
July was another great month at the club, and Picacho Hills CC had quite a few great moments.
Our Introductory Membership program kicked off with a great Open House. We had many community organizations on hand and the club shined. Over 25 families signed up for the trial membership, and we have already gained six new families, with many more signing up this month.
Junior Sports Camp was a huge success this past month. This year, the camp added an extra day of camp and for the grand finale, we hosted the Junior Sports Camp Awards Banquet, where all the little ones were recognized for their hard work. Many thanks go out to Naomi Rupp, our Camp Director, and the whole team of instructors and counselors.
PHCC Class of 2012
Looking forward to August, we are hosting our first, “Dive In” movie, sure to be a family favorite. Saturday, August 18, come and relax by the pool, dance to live music, enjoy a pool side grill buffet and when the sun sets, watch a movie from the pool deck. Reservations are required as we are expecting a capacity crowd.
We also have our first Book Club meeting, August 10 at noon in the Organ Room. Since this is the very first Book Club meeting, we have a lot to discuss, including upcoming readings, future dates and formats. All interested are welcome to attend.
As always, we are happy to add new opportunities to use your club. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve the club.
At your service,
Tony Cosgrove

President’s Note My fellow members,
A brilliant man by the name of Martin Luther King Jr. once proclaimed forcefully, “I HAVE A DREAM!” I don’t pretend to approach the brilliance of Dr. King, but I would nonetheless like to share with you my dreams and hopes for this outstanding country club and its equally treasured members. And, I beseech you to share with me and my fellow Board members your vision of the future and just as importantly, how we might get there together.
Not being a golfer (yet – maybe someday), I am not technically astute about the game or those facilities, but I do know how lush and pretty the course appears to be and I observe the smiles on golfers faces and the pleased bounce in their step as they begin (or finish) their game. This tells me that all is pretty darn good on the course. The driving range is also quite attractive since the renovations of the last couple of years and the new practice facility is coming along quite nicely.
My dream includes continuing to enhance and upgrade the golf course as necessary but is primarily focused on the enhancement of the remaining aspects of the country club in a way that starkly and grandly differentiates PHCC from any other recreational and social facility with which it may compete.
My dream for the club includes brand new post-stressed concrete tennis courts and a tennis center that affords a second story viewing area for watching court play, with a pro shop and restrooms. This center would also include a top of the line, fully equipped fitness facility with adequate additional floor space to support jazzercise, yoga or pilates. My dream also includes a redesigned and expanded main clubhouse, with separate dedicated space to accommodate banquets and parties without disturbing members. My dream includes a beautiful new bar and patio where the lower putting green currently sits, perhaps a new golf pro shop and a revamp of the locker room facilities to make them more useful and attractive to members. Solar water heating and electrical generation could extend the swimming season and enhance member comfort in the swimming pool. You get the idea.
None of these dreams are beyond our reach. It may be that with interest rates as low as they are right now we could have an opportunity to accomplish these things sooner than you think. All of us agree that our facility is a true “bargain” at this time. It may be that with all of us keeping an open mind and with some very creative input from the membership with regard to financing ideas we could actually begin to plan these improvements this summer.
MEMBERS, please tell us now. What are your dreams? What are your priorities? What improvements and fixes are needed in the short term – in the long term? Most importantly, what means can we employ to make this happen sooner rather than later? How do we get to the dreams without risking the financial stability of the club? What can we do to expand the membership base, change our dues structure or redesign membership options to rationalize these dreams? Ownership supports us in these efforts and we sincerely need your input and support.

Golf Pro’s Note Happy August,
July was a great month for Picacho Hills. We had many great events on the course and at the club, and we held our always anticipated Junior Sports Camp! The kids had a great time and our instructors did as well. Thank you to all of those who participated and we hope to see you all again next year!
As you all know we are within the hottest months of the year for our golf course. We have finally received a little bit of rain, but let us hope that the monsoon season brings a lot more! Even though we have had the moisture we would like to stress more than ever to observe the 90 degree rule and keep off the grass as much as possible.
We have also noticed that many of the groups are going out on the course in multiple golf carts. We would really appreciate if you pair up within the group and refrain from using four golf carts for four different golfers. It is extremely tough on the golf course and it is especially hard during these hot months. Please help us keep your course in great shape!
August looks to be another great month for our club. We have very few golf tournaments, however, we will be holding our club championships on August 18th and 19th. It will be a great opportunity to come out and try to claim your spot as the Picacho Hills Club Champion. We will be holding a Men and Senior division, so there is plenty of room for all levels and ages of golfers.
Do not forget to stop by the pro shop to look for and sign up for future tournaments to come. We have had excellent participation levels this year and we would love to keep up the trend.
Also, we just received a couple new shipments of apparel and accessories and we hope that you will come by and support our golf shop. Please remember that if there is nothing that interests you in the shop, we can always call in a special order. We would certainly appreciate those of you who have credit to come out and use it!
See you on the course,
Paul Hinde, PGA

TJ’s Tips
The “Stab”
I often see people on the chipping green practicing the lower lofted shots and most of them will “stab” at the ball instead of following through. The “stab” motion comes from trying to hit the ball rather than swinging through the ball. It is always better to think about letting the ball get in the way of a good swing rather than hitting at the golf ball.
People always say that if they follow through the ball go goes to high. This is certainly true in some aspects because the ball flight matches the follow through. So, if you follow thru high the ball goes high, but if you finish low the ball comes out lower.
In order to get consistent ball contact, it is imperative to follow through. To hit the ball lower simply just shorten the follow through and try to keep the hands in front of the ball at impact. Also, if you move the ball back in your stance and try to hit down on the ball a little bit more, the ball will come out lower with more spin.
Make sure to try out these tips on our new short game area! Good Luck….

Golf News
Greetings members,
First off let me thank everyone for adhering to the 90 degree rule, carts on paths only for par 3’s and your understanding for closing at noon on Mondays. This has helped tremendously.
The rains we have received the last two weeks have definitely flushed a large amount of the salt built up in our soil profile. The salt accumulates every time we irrigate and without putting enough water down to push it pass the root zone, it will surely damage the plant. During the hotter months the plant sweats as we do and as water evaporates what is left behind are the salts. If this is left on the plant, leaf burn, tissue damage and eventually desiccation will occur. The rain has also allowed many bound up nutrients in the soil to be made available for the turf grass plant to use and a major growth spurt has been the result. It has been one up and down summer. The rain and cooler temperatures have been a welcomed change but the disease pathogens love it too. We have notice some different disease patterns on the shorter cut grasses and have applied agents to stop the major spread. Another application of grub control will take place in the coming weeks in order to keep the nasty pests from damaging our wonderful stand of turf. This is what the summer brings. Overall cool season turf grass quality for this time of year is great.
Now down a different avenue. The lighting in the clubhouse is to be phased out and replace with energy efficient products. The EPA has set forth a mandate that all commercial lighting must meet a certain standard. What this means for us here at the club is that the older lighting ballasts and bulbs are to discontinued and repair parts will be costly and very hard to find. The lighting changes will begin the last week in July and continue through August. See you on the course.
Always Greenside Up,
Gil Martinez, GCSAA (A)

Dear Members, The summer has been hot and busy here on the courts. As some of you may have noticed, it was hard to get a court time in the early mornings, but I am glad to see so many kids and adults wanting to play tennis. Also, I am glad to see so many players/members participating the USTA Leagues that are being played at this time of the year. Although it is hot, it is quite encouraging to see this many people active. In addition, we have several new beginners starting to play tennis. This is very encouraging and I want to remind everyone, it’s never too late to start an active lifestyle. We had a great success with Men's Scramble Tournament in July. Therefore, ladies requested such a tournament for them as well. The Ladies’ Tournament will be scheduled for Saturday, Sep 15th. The start time will be posted additionally. Ladies’ league will also start back again late August. Please come see me at the shop for information or to get enrolled. Junior Fall Tennis Program will change its schedule for the fall months. The practice schedule will be posted first week of August. The junior practices will be happening three times a week. The Fall schedule will be posted online the first week of August. See you on the courts. Roman Stoisavljevic PHCC Tennis Director (575) 312-7781
