Inside this issue

s regular readers of this column know, I like to use this

space each month to feature a new, really special program, or to invite you to an upcoming community

event, or just tell you something interesting you might not know about WHRo.

This month, I want to let you know about a problem we’ve been having, and what we’ve been doing to try to correct it.

A bit of background: last year, the US Postal Service announced that it would close the processing center in Norfolk, and process Hampton Roads’ mail at the Postal Services center in Sandston, just outside of Richmond. Despite assurances that our mail would not be delayed by even so much as a day, we were apprehensive. WHRo depends heavily on the mail, both to communicate with potential and current members, and to raise and receive much needs funds.

Dimensions is one of the most important pieces of mail we send. It contains scheduling for all of our radio stations and TV channels. This is timely information, and it’s not available anywhere else in print. So a few months ago, when we started receiving complaints that it wasn’t being delivered on time, we began to worry.

And as it turns out, we had good reason. Some members have reported receiving Dimensions not just a few days late, but as much as two weeks past the first of each month. Thus far, in the last two months, we have heard from dozens of members

complaining that they hadn’t received Dimensions. During the entire 2012 calendar year, we received only 84 such calls and emails.

our staff members immediately attempted to reach the Sandston Distribution Center to inquire about the cause for the delay, and to try to find a workable solution. I’m sorry to report that thus far, they have received no response. In fact, they have yet to reach a live employee.

Preparing Dimensions two weeks earlier isn’t an option, as the majority of the information comes from our national program partners – PBS and others – who provide their schedules as close to air time as possible, to ensure the programming is as current and timely as possible.

We have taken the step of writing to our Congressional representative, informing him of the potential for very real hardship unless the problem is resolved, not just for WHRo but for everyone in Hampton Roads who depends on the Post Office to be efficient and responsive.

In the meantime, please know that we are aware of the situation, and that we’re doing everything we can, and we will continue to do everything we can to make sure you are getting the best and most accurate information – on time.

A

o many people who are alive today, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is the President who will be forever enshrined in myth by

an assassin’s bullet. But for those who remember exactly where they were on that cold day fifty years ago, the events of November 22, 1963 will always burn hot in our memories. John Kennedy was the President whose youth and vigor promised a New Frontier, a new opportunity, a break from the monochromatic years of the fifties.

John F. Kennedy’s presidency long defied objective appraisal, but recent assessments have revealed an administration long on promise and vigor, while somewhat lacking in tangible accomplishment. His proposals for a tax cut and civil rights legislation, however, promised significant gains in the months before his assassination. While maturation, as evidenced in the handling of the Cuban

missile crisis, was apparent, the potential legacy of the New Frontier will forever be left to speculation. Without the years promised to one so gifted, we will never know what he might have accomplished in this country he loved, and throughout the world.

There will be those who view this program with the dispassionate eye of a student of history – and there will be those of us who will watch, grieving as we see our youthful dreams die with the larger-than-life young Prince of Camelot.

But no one who watches these programs will be unmoved and uninspired by this man who asked us to look inside ourselves to our better angels – this young man who asked us to give ourselves, our time and our talent, to our country.

Something’s cooking at WHRo: let’s Eat!

MediaVA, the digital media distribution system developed by WHRo, is quickly becoming the

premier statewide resource for Virginia educators. And, over the past few months, this outstanding resource has become a two-time award winner!

In September, eMediaVA was presented with a governor’s Technology Award at a special ceremony at the Commonwealth of Virginia Innovative Technology Symposium (CoVITS) in Richmond. The governor’s Technology Awards program recognizes public sector IT projects that have improved government service delivery and efficiency. ampton Roads’ own Mike Tomlin took the reins as head coach of the Pittsburg Steelers in 2007, and two years later, became the youngest coach to

win a Super Bowl championship. But his success hasn’t stopped him from returning to his community to give back. In fact – it’s been a driving force.

Every summer for the past four years, Tomlin returns to coach his annual Youth Football camp. He says that growing up, he had people from the community guide him down the right path. He says they helped shape and mold him as a child, and now it’s his turn: “I take it personal and I believe I have an obligation to pay it forward, and that’s what I’m trying to do!”

A graduate of Denbigh High School and the College of William and Mary, Tomlin uses the camp as more than just a tool to teach young men skills to use on the football field. It’s also a way to show them the importance of education, specifically when pursuing their goals and dreams.

He applauds PBS and WHRo’s “American graduate: let’s Make it Happen” initiative, which works to address and find solutions to the drop out crisis in Hampton Roads. “I don’t care what your dreams are, getting a quality education, a formal education, needs to be a component of it,” Tomlin says, “Because, whether it’s directly or indirectly related to your field, to be successful, you need education – and also for dealing with the issues that come with success!”

Throughout his career, Mike Tomlin has been a part of the coaching staff for several teams, including the 2007 Steelers. And while he likes to win, that’s not what he speaks about when he’s asked about his proudest moments as a coach. Tomlin says there are many, and they all center around his players who’ve found fulfillment in their personal lives – long after they’ve left the football field. “Seeing a guy who may be labeled as an ‘at risk’ guy taking his god-given abilities in the game of football, and using that as an avenue to better himself and create opportunities for him in life is something that warms your heart.”

That same heartwarming feeling comes as he watches the young men attending his football camp taking the disciplines he and the other coaches try to impart and using them in other areas of their lives. He knows most of the kids attending his camp won’t play for the NFl, but it’s his hope that they’ll take what they’ve learned to the game of life.

As this Wagner and Verdi bicentennial year draw to a close, we still have time to present masterpieces by these giants of opera. on the 9th of this month, our Houston grand opera series offers one of the great middle-period operas by giuseppe Verdi, one with music that even non-opera-lovers know, “Il Trovatore,” featuring Dolora Zajik, for many the definitive Azucena. Then on the 30th, Richard Wagner’s monumental music drama “Tritan und Isolda” will be broadcast, with Ben Heppner and Nina Stemme as opera’s most transcendent lovers.

At a time of year when the landscape can seem dreary, November is brightened with colorful bunting, thanks to Election Day, Veterans Day and, of course, Thanksgiving. We’ll have compositions by American composers about thanks giving, and, for election day, some truly awful campaign songs from the past. If you think political campaigns hit their nadir recently, these songs might just change your mind. Tune in and enjoy the musical Americana!
