The longest disused railway tunnel in the country could soon become the longest cy-cle trail tunnel in the coun-try.Having last week welcomed news that council had de-cided to retain funding for the Great Taste Cycle Trail’s development in its annual plan, Nelson Tasman Cy-cle Trust chair Gillian Wratt says the next stage of con-struction will be linking up from Wakefield to Tapawera, Woodstock and Motueka, and that could include a trip through the 121 year old Spooner’s Railway Tunnel. “If we can get the funding together what we want to do is get the route through

to the entrance of the tunnel in the next year, and then get through the tunnel the year after that,” she says. “All go-ing well, the plan would be to have the tunnel open in a couple of years.”Located at the bottom of the Spooner’s Range, the tun-nel runs in a straight line for 1352 metres and has only been used for guided tours and monthly walks after it closed in 1955 when the en-tire railway network shut-down in Nelson. Gillian says it’s a great local feature to in-clude on the trail. She says the land through to the tunnel has varying own-ers, while the tunnel itself is controlled by Land Informa-

tion New Zealand on behalf of the crown. The trust is in negotiations with all parties over access. While the Tapawera Histori-cal Society, who help main-tain the tunnel, were initially opposed to the idea due to

worries over vandalism, cus-todian Bob Stewart says the tunnel “belongs to the com-munity”. The remaining 67km on the trail is expected to cost around $2.3 million over the next three to five years.

People often say they prefer to shop in Richmond because the parking is free. Now that Nelson has free parking, would you be more likely to shop there instead?

Christine Steans,Richmond.

“I’d still come to Richmond to shop. It’s just convenience. I think some people would go

“It’s taken Nelson a long time to wake up hasn’t it? But it’s a

bit late.”

“I’d definitely still shop in Richmond. It’s not so much

the parking but the layout is a lot better. Everything is more

central.”

Richmond retailers are set to receive a significant boost after the new integrated health hub employing 102 staff opened its doors in the former Network Tasman building on Queen St on Tuesday. All 55 of Nelson Bays Primary Health staff, 43 Nelson-based Public Health Service staff and four management team mem-bers of the new Maori Health organisation Te Piki Oranga have moved into the redevel-oped building. And that num-ber could increase with Pri-mary Health chief executive Andrew Swanson-Dobbs say-ing there could be "opportuni-ties" to relocate even more staff to the new hub when a new two storey extension is completed on July 1 next year."We have a number of staff working in temporary offices out the back and they will move into the new building next year. The new building will also mean there are opportunities to move more staff out there, but there will have to be some planning to see what that looks like."

And that's exciting news for the town's retailers, with Rich-mond Unlimited chairman Brent Cheyne saying the new health hub is "another injection into the Richmond economy."“We haven't had a lot of discus-sion about it but what we have has all been positive. It's good to see that building being occu-pied again and it will be good to get some foot traffic down that end of town.”Although Brent says it is diffi-cult to quantify the economic benefits of the office opening it is obvious that having an ad-ditional 102 people working in the central business district will

make a significant impact. He says it is also good news that the building is "owned by an authority [Network Tasman]which distributes dividends back to the community."Brent says the decision by Pri-mary Health and the DHB to move to Richmond was also "another reason to support plans for the town's redevelop-ment". He says Richmond is growing rapidly and the town needed to address a number of key issues identified in the plans, including improving Queen St's storm water system and streetscape and the en-tranceway to the town.

Project Butterfly tops awards nightA group of volunteers behind a healing memo-rial pathway that pays tribute to children gone too soon, were last night recognised at the Trust-power Nelson Tasman Community Awards as the Supreme Winner. More than 230 people gathered at the Rutherford for the awards which were presented by Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Trustpower community rela-tions manager Graeme Purches. For winning the supreme award, Project But-

terfly received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money. Project Butterfly now has the opportunity to represent the region at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards, which are being held in the Wellington region next March.Trustpower community relations representative Jess Somerville says, in a nut shell, Project But-terfly aims to help families who have suffered an unimaginable loss; the loss of a child. “This empathetic group do this by introducing them

to other people in similar situations, sending them on workshops, helping pay for counsel-ling if need be and they also support them with cooked meals too,” she says. “It’s a project that is helping make families whole again through art, workshops, contact and introductions, and we can’t wait for them to share their story at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards.” Trustpower gave away over $5000 to various community groups during the awards, which had 110 entries.

Richmond Athletic AFC annual quiz night has been postponed after organisers were caught out by new liquor licensing laws that require longer processing times for licence applications. The club’s annual quiz night was scheduled to be held at the Richmond School Hall this Fri-day, but has been postponed until August 8 to ensure it has time to get a special liquor license for the event. Club president Stu Reid says they applied for a special licence about two weeks before the quiz night but were informed by the Tasman Dis-trict Council that it required 20 working days to process the application under new legislation introduced last year.“We just didn’t realise that the law had changed and we needed 20 days. It’s one of these things that is not our priority and it just snuck up on us,” Stu says.Council regulatory services coordinator Gra-ham Caradus says they had to introduce a long-er processing time of 20 working days because they are now required to include a report from police and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s medical officer of health with each application.“The medical officer of health has 10-15 days to respond and they have other priorities as well so that puts us on the back foot for a start,” Graham says. “We also find that a lot of the ap-plications are not completed properly so there’s often a lot of to-ing and fro-ing as we sort that out.” The new legislations also require council to present applications to the District Licencing Committee, which only meets about once a week. Applications were previously completed by council staff and “could be turned around in 48 hours”.Graham says council has fast-tracked a number of applications to help out community groups and clubs but it can’t bend the rules because it is responsible for ensuring the conditions of li-cences are followed. All the information about applying for special licences is on the council website and Graham says most groups are aware of the new regula-tions. The council has only had to turn down two applications because of they didn’t allow enough time for processing since the new legis-lation was introduced.“We have had quite a few people ask for licences within the 20 days and we have said ‘we’ll do it this time but the legislation does specify 20 days for processing’. I think we have only said ‘no’ twice because the notice was so short so the message is getting out there.” Graham says people applying for licences should also be aware that they could reduce costs and waiting times by putting in applica-tions for a series of events together. Stu says the quiz night is becoming increasingly popular and is now the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. It is well supported by club mem-bers and the business community which pro-vides items for the silent auction.Tickets to Richmond Athletic’s quiz night can be bought from Deborah on 021 117 2022.

A Richmond man, who was on the run from police inves-tigating an Auckland drugs ring, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, weeks after police appealed for information in Waimea Weekly.Terry Jones, 44, was caught around 4am, after the Armed Offenders Squad and Nelson CIB stormed the motel he was hiding out in.He had been wanted by police

for seven weeks in relation to police Operation Genoa - a lengthy inves-tigation into the manufacture and supply of meth-amphetamine in the Auckland re-gion.A substantial amount of drugs, believed to be methamphet-amine, was also found in

the motel room where Jones was arrested.“Jones has been the subject of na-tion-wide public-ity generated by police and we are confident that his arrest will have an impact in de-creasing the sup-

Business Update. Adv.

We all deserve a dry warm and healthy homeRowan Dron is delighted to be your local SmartVent System installer and believes this is the best home ventilation system around. If you asked an expert electrician, rather than the next door-to-door sales-person who comes knocking, or a fast talk-ing telemarketer, chances are that they’d recommend SmartVent too. Recent inde-pendent research revealed that 8 out of 10 electricians recommend SmartVent as the home ventilation solution to choose.A home ventilation system from SmartVent quietly ventilates your home with fresher, drier air; removing condensation and moisture and creating a healthier, more comfortable living environment.SmartVent rids your home of condensa-tion, crying windows, wet sills, damp walls. These are all signs of too much moisture in the home. Damp conditions lead to mould and mildew. They damage your paint and wallpaper, rot your walls and furniture, harm your curtains, furnishings and clothes. Mould and mildew lead to air-borne allergens and aggravate respiratory illnesses like asthma. So don’t put up with crying windows and damp walls – it’s cost-ing you money, takes time to clean up and could be dramatically affecting your fam-ily’s health.Breathe fresh clean air by reducing air-

borne toxins from tobacco smoke, house-hold cleaners, and formaldehyde from furniture, carpet and building materials. SmartVent also reduces pollutants such as dust and dust mites, pet dander and pollen, all of which can trigger asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions.SmartVent Synergy is a True Heat Recovery system capable of extracting stale, mois-ture-laden air from inside your home and bringing in fresher, drier air simultaneous-ly. Synergy is a completely balanced sys-tem, that recovers and re- uses up to 90% of the heat from the warm air extracted from within your home. An extremely en-ergy efficient way to re-use heat you have already generated and paid for from your heat pump, log fire or other heat source.SmartVent is cheaper than other ventila-tion systems, is of higher quality and they are a local NZ company that uses NZ-made gear. It’s future proofed so you can up-grade at any time, it’s easy to operate and has whisper quiet running, as well as a five year guarantee. To discover exactly how SmartVent can keep your home warmer, drier and healthier, check out their website www.smartvent.co.nz or arrange for Rowan to call and provide a free home assessment.Don’t forget, we can service your heat-pumps too.

It was just as well there wasn't a double booking for two shows that were held in the region at the weekend, with the National Cat Show being held at Saxton Stadium and the Nelson Bird Club's Show at Hope Hall.Saxton Stadium was a cat fancier's heaven, with a massive turnout for the National Cat Show – and not even a fire evacuation could spoil it.Rose Boulton, a member of the Nelson Cat Club, says there were “crowds and crowds” of people coming through on Sunday to check out the top pedigree cats from around New Zealand, which were being judged by an international panel. “We’re not sure how many people were through yet, because we haven’t had a chance to do the tallies, but it was just brilliant,” she says. “The venue was excellent, the crowd was excellent, and it was another really good show.”The only downside was an evacuation, which put the event on hold for about 45 minutes. There

was no fire, but cat owners were forced to put their cats in cages and take them outside while the fire service checked the venue after an alarm had gone off.On the other side of town, bird lovers flocked to the Hope Hall on Saturday and Sunday where 306 canaries, finches, love birds, budgies, Brit-ish and hybrids were entered in the Nelson Bird Club's annual show. Club president Ted Griffith says they had birds from Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton, Blen-heim and Nelson, although it was Richmond breeder Robbie Flowers who stole the show. Robbie, who has been breeding zebra finches for 40 years, won his third Best Zebra Finch ribbon in three shows after earlier winning at Christch-urch and Ashburton. "It can take years and years to breed a cham-pion bird, although sometimes you can fluke it straight away," Robbie says.

Fundraising and design, and planning will be two of the bigger challenges for the new directors of the New Zealand Central Mo-torsports and Adventure Park, after they were appointed at a meeting last week. The proposed motorsport and adventure park will be constructed on a 203 hectare property at Stanley Brook owned by Nel-son motorsport enthusiast Garry Adcock. It was granted a resource consent ear-lier this year and last Thursday about 100 people elected a board of directors at the group's first public meeting.

One of the directors Dave McLeod says they were pleased with the turn-out at the meeting which was attended by represent-atives from "a good cross-section of mot-orsports groups". "We had all the groups we thought would be there and some we didn't even know existed. Now we will be going out and lis-tening to potential user groups and seeing what they want, and then try to provide it for them," Dave says. Dave says the next step will be to form working parties at the first board meeting

on July 8, to look at specific aspects of the project including fundraising, planning and design, governance and marketing. The board also plans to hold another pub-lic meeting in six months to provide an up-date on their progress.Garry Adock was elected chairman of the board. Board members are Dave, Damian Stone, Paul Jennings, Ash Price, Ashton Wood, Rick Weldon, Steve Steele, Peter Fitzgibbon, Dugald Ley and Clinton Lo-chead, while Trish Palmer is secretary-treasurer. Dave says the key to the venture's

success will be to develop a site that caters for a wide range of activities. Although the park will be centred around a complex of motorsport tracks and facilities it will also include a conference centre, accommoda-tion, a camping ground, mountainbike park and tracks, commercial premises and a variety of recreational activities. The project had been estimated to cost around $26 million although Dave says the final figure was likely to be considerably less because they could make significant savings on the race track.

There’s been a mainly positive reaction to the Prime Minister’s shock announcement to in-vestigate building the long-talked-about South-ern Link.John Key announced on Sunday that the in-vestigation into building what would be a new state highway, would be funded by the gov-ernment, prompting support from his cabinet minister and local MP Nick Smith, Nelson AA and residents online. The road, would provide a third route to the city from the Tasman district, where most of the region’s exports are grown or produced. It would mean that trucks carrying that produce could drive to Port Nelson with-out having to drive along the scenic Rocks Rd, leaving it clear for development.

Waimea College jazz musicians had a good tune up for next month’s New Zealand School of Music sec-ondary schools jazz competition in Wellington when they took out three of the four top awards at the Nelson Youth Jazz Festival. Two big bands and seven jazz com-bos from Waimea College, Nayland College, Motueka High School, Nelson College for Girls and Nel-son College entered the festival held at the Boatshed in Nelson on June 22. Waimea College entered four combos and they all produced top performances leading up to the national jazz competitionWaimea dominated the combo section with the Pip West Quartet of Pip West, Matt Hammond, Pe-ter Thomson and Harry Binskin winning the category ahead of a Waimea College Septet of Pip, Har-

ry, Peter, Matt, James Corcraighe, Ben Wotherspoon and Stuart Gordon, and a Waimea quartet of Harry, Matt, Jack Cooper and Liam Potts. The Pip West Quartet won the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology Music Arts Cup for Best Overall Band while their drummer, Harry, won the Nelson Jazz Festival Cup for Best Individ-ual Performer. Peter won the Tom Rainey Cup for Best Bass Player.Music teacher Martin Emo says he was not surprised at the students’ success because they were all tal-ented musicians who worked hard. Martin says he is spending about three and a half hours a week re-hearsing with the students leading up to the national competition in Wellington while the students are also playing some private gigs.

Semi-submersible boat coming to town:Cool idea!! But why not just a glass bottomed boat? I’m trying to figure

out if the bottom of the boat hangs this low underneath the main structure how can you manoeuvre the boat around the bay? How far out does the kelp beds go from the shore to allow the submersed part of the boat to see the marine life? Might be a dumb question :) TML (via waimeaweekly.co.nz).

That’s a great investment in Tour-ism for the Nelson region, good

luck with the project. David (via waime-aweekly.co.nz).

I think its neat, it’s great we have marine reserves, but not everyone

is a scuba diver, I think this boat and trip will be very popular. Dez Tinee.

Car park near misses:Is it just me seeing things, or how many accidents do actually happen

in the mall carpark each week? I’ve seen several near misses. Navigation especially on the Kmart end, is very difficult. So hard to know where the road parts end. It’s a nightmare! Tania Pearson Read.

Skull was young woman’s:Jesus! That’s a bit spooky and defi-nitely unexpected. Jae Walter.

So not a long-lost Ngawhatu pa-tient!! Janelle Thorpe.

The Car Company is giving away $10,000, who do you think should get it?:

SPCA. They do such good work and so much of it is reliant on other

peoples generosity. Or the Mike Corkill appeal. Janelle McKeown.

Child cancer foundation.... Amaz-ing amazing, amazing, support

when/since our girl was diagnosed seven and a half years ago. Kelly Watson.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Jenny Dron.

Thoughts on Southern Link:Another road is definitely needed. In and out of the city. Tara Jolly.

Finally, some progress, it’s about time! Andrea Jones.

About time! Nikole Berkett.

Hope it goes ahead! Sophie Gray.

No! My street is busy and loud enough, don’t need another to add

to it. Jackie Stringer.

Definitely time for a new MP in Nelson - fortunately it’s election

year. John-Paul Pochin.

Great news for us, after the last two storms we need another way in and

out. Brenda Kenny.

So all these ones in favour, I’m guessing don’t live in

the Victory area. How about we run the link directly through your backyards. Protest hard people of Victory. Sharon May Patterson.

Meanwhile, funding isn’t high enough for our poly-

tech, our schools and our hospi-tals. Where are the Nat’s priori-ties? Rachel Boyack.

I went to Victory School. My two kids also attended

Victory School. I am very keen to see this area progress. Traffic flows are akin to arterial flows in the human body. Those ar-eas with the greatest flow are the most healthy, and those with the least decay and die. It is no coin-cidence that Tahuna, Richmond and the areas around Hampden St School are progressive, while the Victory area stagnates. I am very keen to see my area embrace

the positives that change will bring. I am even more enthused by the benefits that would accrue to all Nelsonians. Bring it on. John Baumfield.

Rainbow Ski area hopes to open for the 2014 season this Saturday, with some great new activities on field for all of the family - OR, a team building day out for your business!Workers on the field have been hard at work battling unseasonably warm conditions making snow for the Base area, and the usual swarm of Rainbow volunteers have put everything back in place and ready for action this Saturday. Rainbow Ski area has again relied heavily on their army of volunteer members to get the ski area ready for opening to the community this Saturday. Spokesman Hamish Neill says the amount of support from ALL ages is quite incredible. Volunteers put thousands of man-hours maintaining and upgrading the Ski Field every year. “This year has been no different and, weather and snow permitting, we are ready to go” “Weather leading up to the start of the season has had plenty of promise, and the usual

temperature drop is just around the corner. With that will come stacks of snow, so get ready!” This year, Rainbow plans to run fun kids’ activities on field every weekend that they are open. “We are a really family friendly field, and the facilities are perfect for kids' to have their first go at snow sports, be that skiing, boarding or tobogganing. There are great learner and kids packages for first timers, and just coming up and enjoying the mountains is for everyone" Family Day-Passes have been a real hit with families over the school holidays. Two adults and two or more of their children or grandchildren up to 17 year-old can ski on the pass, at the same price of only $190, with extra children added for only $30.Day passes have been kept as low as possible, with Rainbow adult passes costing $75 a day, $35 for children up to 17 years and seniors. Students from New Zealand

and Australia can enjoy a day on the slopes for only $55, and children under seven can try their talents on the snow for free. Rainbow have introduced youth holiday training camps in 2014, available with 2 and 4 day packages that include 4 hours of lessons a day, plus day-passes and rentals. This program will really get the skill levels high for the season.

If your work group or team needs a well-earned reward, have a look at Rainbow's team building program- includes lessons, ski/boarding gear, day-passes and transport up and down the hill for you and your team mates. Fantastic deal for big groups, it also includes a free day-pass to use on another day! See the website for details on all of these great promotions. If you don’t have chains, or would prefer not to drive the mountain road, the Rainbow shuttle bus provides a great transport option. All cars and buses need to carry chains on the mountain road. Chains often need to be fitted to the vehicle to gain mountain access, or at the end of the day if snow has fallen. Shuttle bus services run regularly from the bottom car park, or chains can be hired, with providers listed on the Rainbow website.Rainbow boasts leading facilities, with a café on the snow serving a great range of food, from soups and pies to sweets and treats, as well as hot and cold drinks. It’s a great way to take a break from tearing up the snow and to warm your hands over a coffee and snack. Quality rental gear is available, as well as repairs and maintenance services for snow equipment. Ski and board schools offer lessons for all stages of ability. This year the team welcomes back a team of highly-qualified international instructors, and

the very popular Rainbow Development Programme for budding skiers and boarders kicks off on July 27th.Rainbow offers group lessons, private lessons, and coaching programmes to cater for all levels of skier or snow-boarder, from novice to expert. If you sign up for a group lesson you will be assessed for current ability, and then assigned to an instructor with other skiers/riders of similar ability for your lesson. Private lessons offer the opportunity for either one-on-one coaching, or a group lesson with just your family or friends, and coaching specific to your individual needs. Rainbow's skier and boarder development programmes offer promising young skiers and snow-boarders the opportunity to develop their competitive skills over the season, by participating in full day and half day sessions every Sunday. This year’s season has kicked off to a great start with the support and efforts of the numerous sponsors, who have been involved with getting things up and running for the year, and have helped improve the ski fields and facilities. Visit the website so you can check up on the latest weather reports, webcams, as well as road and lift statuses and much more, so you can plan your snow trip.

Well-known Nelson fishing guide Tony Entwistle is back be-hind the counter this month but it's just for a few weeks while he lends a helping hand at Stirling Sports in Richmond. Tony has been trout fishing for most of his life, gaining a repu-tation as one of the country's best fishing guides after setting up his first guiding business in St Arnaud in 1980. However, Tony is also familiar with the retail side of the business own-ing a hunting and fishing store in Nelson from 1990 to 1999 and last week he returned to the shop floor working for his friend Dave Heyward in Stirling

Sports. "It's been good catching up with a lot of my old custom-ers," Tony says."That was always the best thing about working in retail.”Although winter is traditionally a quiet time of the year for fish-ing guides, Tony says the guid-ing industry is recovering well after a downturn during the global recession. He estimates that the number of clients de-clined by around 30 per cent from 2009-2011 with an even bigger decline of 60 per cent in American clients. "We were lucky because the Australian's were still spending during that time and balanced things out. If

you had been relying exclusively on Americans you would have been struggling."Tony is helping out Dave who "is a little short-staffed" as he prepares to move premises from Queen St to the Richmond Mall. Dave says Stirling Sports Rich-mond will close on August 1 and reopen in the mall next to Pak n' Save "hopefully by mid to late August". The new-look Stir-ling Sports will be focussing on sporting footwear, apparel and equipment, while Dave says the national franchise Hunting and Fishing will be opening a new store in his Queen St premises in August.

The expert team at Carpet Plus; Jill Gale, Greg Ham, Bryan Parkesand Janice Millar, are pictured in their spacious showroom locatedat 199 Queen Street. They are always available for friendly, expertadvice and will help you get just the look you are after, at the rightprice, on all of your flooring projects.

It’s been a year since Carpet Plus own-ers, Greg Ham and Bryan Parkes, opened their new premises on Queen St in Rich-mond. Customer demand for a show-room finally made them take the plunge and display their huge range of quality flooring products in a modern and styl-ish space, giving customers a great expe-rience when they come in. Along with the showroom, Carpet Plus also introduced a great range of curtains, blinds, colour palettes, kitchen design samples and a selection of tile options from Tile Direct. Working alongside oth-er businesses, including McRaes, Resene, Trends Kitchens and Tile Direct, means customers can see all aspects of their dream home come together before their eyes. Carpet Plus are proud to make the fit out of your new or renovated home easier by referring you to other interior experts so you get the full package and quality products. “It’s all a part of the journey for people and it’s something quite special to be involved in. Customers come in with a vague idea of what they would like, and can leave with a look that they really love,” says Greg. There is a huge range of “really neat floor-ing” at Carpet Plus, with the options of carpets in triexta, wool, wool blends and nylons, stain proof and fade resistant styles, along with a selection of vinyl’s, vinyl tiles and planks. Tasman District has the perfect climate and environment for choosing walking and cycling as a transport option, as well as for recreation. The updated ‘Get Moving’ maps are designed to encourage people in Richmond, Ruby Coast and Motueka to walk or cycle for short trips. The maps show walk and cycle paths that link the communities, as well as information on the facilities you’ll find when you get there and key destinations. The maps are free and are available to pick up from the Council’s service centres, li-braries and can also be downloaded from www.tasman.govt.nz. Get Moving is an initiative of the Tasman District Council with input and support from local cycling and athletic clubs and organisations, Nelson City Council, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Sport Tasman. The target is to get over 200 people participating in activator programmes, 1000 in Ride and Stride, 500 in guided walks and rides and 1000 in Get Moving walking and cycling events.

Chicken Therapy - It is a well-recognised that sharing time with other species provides physi-cal and emotional health benefits for humans. Our modern day lives can be very stressful and more and more people are finding that spend-ing time with their feathered friends can be very therapeutic. Here at Appletons we are regular-ly told by our customers that they have found keeping chickens so much more rewarding than they ever imagined. One person new to chook keeping recently exclaimed “I get lots of love-ly fresh, home-grown eggs and chook manure for the veggie garden…but best of all when I get home from a busy day at the office I can go and ‘chill out’ with my chooks. They are great de-stressors! I love them!” We call it Chicken Therapy. Talk to the team at Appletons today. If you are looking for laying hens we have Brown Shavers pullets at 15 weeks of age ready to go to new homes. These girls will be great layers once laying gets underway …and are, of course, all qualified chicken therapists.

It is a fact that that lack of intimacy can be pretty stressful to a lot of couples and it’s quite an embarrassing subject for couples to bring up. The staff at B...Adult Boutique are very helpful when it comes to pointing people in the right direction. It may be an adult movie or toy to get you in the mood or it could be some pills that you need to get things started. The stats show that our mental and emotional health balance is clearly influenced by sex. Abstinence is known to cause problems from anxiety to para-noia and depression... In fact, in case of light depression, after having sex the brain releases endorphins that decrease

stress, inducing a state of euphoria. Inti-macy also drops your cholesterol levels, is good for blood circulation and is also a great way to burn fat and lose weight. If going into B...Adult Boutique is a bit daunting then you can also visit www.bkinky.co.nz.

Let Stressless help you stress less. Research shows that stress is one of the main causes of illness today. Each one of us – even those who are tangata whenua – are either migrants to our country, or descended from migrants. My forebears on my father’s side, for ex-ample, arrived in Nelson by ship from what is now northern Germany in 1872. Some migrants are refugees, compelled to flee their own country in some fear for the safety or well-being of them-selves and their families. We have quite a number of these people in our own re-gion. I have been blessed to have a little to do with some of them and have been in-spired by their courage, re-silience and hard work in settling in a

completely different country with often a different language to learn and differ-

ent customs and regulations to grapple with. From time to time – espe-cially when general elections loom – debate breaks out concerning refugees and mi-grants to our country. Some people it seems fear these people and see their own way of life or perhaps pros-perity threatened by their presence in our society. For-getting perhaps their own connection to migration they advocate ‘circling the wagons’ to keep such people out. Others wish to extend

the hand of welcome, feeling for the

plight of refugees and glad of the skills and contribution that both refugees and migrants bring to our country.Christians in particular remember the experience of the infant Jesus and his family of being refugees. According to the bible, they had to flee their own country in fear of their lives from the paranoid king Herod. They made their home in Egypt for a time before being able to return to their homeland. Jesus went on to teach that when we extend a hand of welcome to people such as refugees and migrants, we are in effect welcoming him.As we approach the general election on September 20, perhaps each of us might usefully reflect on (and perhaps even research) our own connection to mi-gration to our country. In addition, we might add our voice of compassion to any debate, and do what we can to make welcome refugees and migrants we may encounter.

Just a thought...

David Gruschow, Our Lady of

Perpetual Help Parish.

This is a new and exciting course. Town and Country Vets are local stockists of Eukanuba dog foods and they recommend their Premium Per-formance biscuits to keep your work-ing dogs in top health this winter. The New Zealand working dog is an integral part of the Agricultural in-dustry. Working long days, and run-ning tirelessly doesn’t come easy.

Town and Country Vets sug-gest a few simple steps to en-sure you get the best from your working dog team:Shelter - A kennel acts as the dogs battery charger. Warmth, dry bedding and good shelter are all key elements to a com-fortable and effective kennel to recharge the dogs’ battery ready for tomorrow’s tasks.Water - Like humans, dogs re-quire a clean and regular sup-ply of water to keep hydrated. A fresh bowl of water daily, will keep your team hydrated and raring to go.Food - A balanced diet is es-sential to ensure dogs energy levels are maintained, and replenished after a hard day at work. Eukanuba Premium Performance is just the diet to

ensure your dogs can go the distance.

On Farm Agri Centre are your local DeLaval agents. High-volume milking de-mands high-capacity cool-ing. DeLaval compact chillers have been designed to meet these demands. They provide powerful cooling and precise temperature control to lock in milk quality before it goes into the storage tank. Cool-ing milk promptly after milk-ing reduces bacterial activity and helps protect milk qual-ity, a key factor in maximising profit. The needs of large scale milking operations cannot be met by traditional refrig-eration techniques – in-tank cooling simply can’t keep up.

DeLaval compact chillers and plate heat exchangers provide a high-capacity alternative that can meet large scale needs with built in redundancy. The technology used in DeLaval compact chillers provides the fastest cooling rate of any milk cooling technique. This cool-ing power is combined with precision temperature control to optimise milk quality and reduce energy consumption. 60kw, 90kw and 120kw mod-els provide a cost effective way to match capacity to demand. Talk to Gary at On Farm Agri Centre to find out more about DeLaval compact chillers.

Friday night’s 101-89 win over the Southland Sharks seemed more like a party than a basketball game, and all of the celebration was for just one man — Phill Jones. The 368-game veteran played his final home game for the Nelson Giants after a record breaking 19 seasons with the franchise, but he’s hoping to extend the celebration one more week as the team head into the Final Four in Wellington on Friday. “Winning the championship would be the dream scenario, the dream ending. It’d be amazing to bring the tro-phy back with us and hang the boots up after that,” the Giants captain says ahead of the final games of his career. “There will be some tough teams up there, so we’re going to have to play the best we’ve played all season, but if we can then I know I have ended it right.”Phill, now 40 years old, described his fi-nal game as “special”, scoring 21 points in front of a sold-out Saxton Stadium crowd, and then joining with his family

and team-mates on the court afterwards to conclude the occasion. “With these sorts of celebrations there comes a lot of pressure to perform as well. You could quite easily lose those games but we kept it into perspective and got the win. I re-member looking around the crowd and seeing that there were no empty seats which was a pretty special feeling. I’m very grateful for the house to be abso-lutely packed.”In a decorated career, which saw him play 19 seasons for the Nelson Giants and one season for the Otago Nuggets, Phill has the most appearances in NBL history, and sits second on the list of all-time point scorers. He also played 211 times for the Tall Blacks, was a key part of the national team’s fourth placing at the 2002 FIBA World Championship, and has repre-sented New Zealand at the Olympic Games twice. He was the second highest scorer in Athens.Phill has played professional basketball in Finland, Greece and Italy and played for the New Zealand Breakers and the Cairns Taipans in the ANBL. He also had one season with the Otago Nuggets. There are clearly many highlights, so it

was understandable that he struggled to pick out one. “There have been cham-pionships, big plays, big dunks, there’s just so many. But this, the ending here in Nelson tonight would probably be up there as well. I’ve put a lot of hard work into where I’ve got now and I can’t em-phasise that enough to the young kids out there — just practice, practice, prac-tice.”Phill says he never set out to achieve the most appearances in NBL history, he just let his career take him as far as it could go. “I’m just so grateful for the opportunities basketball has given me and the reason I’ve played for so long is because I just love it and that’ll be the hardest thing about retirement — that I’m giving up something that I love. It’s a pretty special sport and it’s going to be tough.”After, hopefully, signing his career off with another championship, Phill says the plan for retirement is work and spending time with his wife Kat and their three children. “I’ve got plenty to do.”The Fico Finance Nelson Giants take on the Wellington Saints in the semi-finals on Friday night. Tip off is at 8:30pm.

Forty-odd years of flippin’ good fun has seen members of the Nelson Judo Club go on to com-pete all over the world, but its focus this month is on new members. The club has strong numbers in its adult and junior classes but is looking for more during its membership drive. Instructor Brett Grimwood says it’s a great sport for kids who are keen to im-prove their confidence, coordination or simply want to take the first steps of the Olympic sport. “We have kids from all over Nelson and, because

there is no kicking or punching in Judo, a lot of parents are keen for their kids to get involved.”Judo is all about take-downs and throws, and the Nelson club has current Oceania champions in its ranks, while Commonwealth Games-bound Mark Brewer used to train at the club’s dojo in the Wakatu Estate. Brett says the club is looking for any adults or kids who are keen to get involved and the first few sessions are free while people de-cide if they want to do it. To find out more about the club, call 027 678 2196 or 021 0229 3459.

Proud supporter of Nelson Netball Umpires

Every week in Nelson, 12 Premier, 54 Senior, 33 Collegiate, 50 Junior and 61 Future Fern teams, over 2000 players, take to the court. An integral part of the game is the umpire. For some it is their chosen sport while others are allocated weekly umpiring duties.

Talk to any of our top umpires and you will soon see that they are as passionate about umpiring as others are about playing. Maree Smith and Kate Smith are Nelson’s top umpires, both have New Zealand B ranking and Kate is currently part of the Netball New Zealand Emerging Tal-ent Squad. While Kate says the top umpires are grateful of the support from Nelson Netball, es-sentially it is self-funded. Kate and Maree, to date, have officiated at the Super Club Tourna-ment, Queen’s Birthday Squad Tournament in Christchurch, and an Under 19 and U23 Tour-nament in Auckland. Kate Smith has been ap-pointed to NZ tournaments in Dunedin and Annie Ewers-Kennedy to the NZ U 17 Tourna-ment in Auckland. The “Smith Ladies” also travel to Wellington to umpire Premier games – with the stadium prac-tically next door to the airport, they fly in, um-pire and fly out again. These opportunities are practically self-funded, and the experience is necessary to be able to step up to the next level. Just as players aspire to test themselves against stronger and more skilled players, umpires need the experience of officiating players at a higher level. Believe it or not, umpires are not looking for mistakes in games – their job is to apply the

rules of the game. They need to look at a game freshly and they strive to have position, vision and timing in sync well enough to rule on it. Nelson is fortunate in having a number of New Zealand C umpires in Julie McGrath, Brenda Thom-son, Deb Vincent, Vicki Reid and Lisa Stove. While Nelson appears to be well endowed with qualified umpires, they are at present mas-sively short on numbers - particu-larly for the higher grades. Nelson has lost the services of accom-plished umpire Mary Ellis, who has retired, and Myron Elkington who has transferred to Wellington. And what happens when an um-pire retires? Some will continue to coach as they have a huge amount of knowledge to share with the less experienced. Val Fitzsimmons is a prime example as she continues to offer her services as a coach and mentor. While Andy Vincent may have hung up his whistle, he is still actively involved in the sport. While Nelson is in a re-building phase they are looking to identify umpires coming through the ranks and are offering support, training and personal coaching. There is a pathway to tertiary education as well, with Mainland umpires eli-gible for Lincoln scholarships. It’s about identifying the balance in their life with passion to play, um-pire and educate. A Marlborough umpire has recently completed her

four years study on a scholarship. If you would like more informa-tion, seek Andy out at the courts and he will point you in the right direction.Marilyn Milne oversees the young-er umpires and has two groups who umpire Future Ferns games on Wednesday s and Saturdays. After recruiting at the beginning of the season she now has a full com-plement. These young umpires have a 15 minutes coaching ses-sion before games start, which can cover rules or just general support. Marilyn also looks after a Junior Squad where the ultimate goal is to give the youngsters the tools and confidence to sit their umpire’s exam. Last year, eight juniors were successful in the Local Theory, with five going on to attain their Local Practical. Marilyn is also Nelson’s Umpire Draw Steward and anyone inter-ested in umpiring on Saturday should contact her on 546 5483. If you have umpired before and per-haps are not available every Sat-urday, you will still be welcomed with open arms.As part of Nelson Building So-ciety’s ongoing relationship with Nelson Netball, the local umpires have been outfitted in a specially-designed Nelson umpire top. The Future Ferns umpires can be seen in their new bright pink t-shirts and are well hydrated from their NBS bottles.

Luke scores four as Bs seal home playoff

Waitohi ‘the perfect test’ before semiWaimea Old Boys co-coach Mark Milne has no problems with playing Waitohi last. The Picton club have already claimed the Bayleys Tasman Trophy with one round to spare and are yet to be beaten in 2014. But Mark says this Saturday’s chal-lenge, which could see Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys seal second place in the competition if they win, is the per-fect lead-in to the Car Company divi-sion one semi-final seven days later. “They’ve been the most consistent side throughout the whole competition, so we’re keen to see where we are at lead-ing into our semi finals of our own local

competition, which is pretty important,” he says. “We think the timing is good. We dropped a couple of games early in the Tasman Trophy and that cost us at the end of the day. But this is great preparation for us.”Waimea Old Boys players and fans would have had their fingers crossed that an-other team could have helped them out and knocked over Waitohi at some point

during the season, but Saturday’s win over Central was enough to hand them the ti-tle with a week to spare. “We had hoped to head into this game with an opportunity and to treat it like a final, so that was the focus. But a wider focus was also that this will be a great run into our semi-final.”Waimea Old Boys are one of the form teams in the Tasman Trophy competition, and again piled on the points at the week-end, beating Awatere 90-7.Having lost two of their first three games, they have gone on to win seven in a row. So Mark is understandably pretty happy with how things are going with the local playoffs

looming. “We don’t put a massive empha-sis on being at full capacity for game one of the season and we were a little bit slower this year. But we are reasonably happy. We’ve enjoyed the Tasman Trophy and our trips to Blenheim, and we’ve played some pretty consistent footy, which is great.” It is almost certain that Waimea Old Boys will face Wakatu Marist in the semi-final next week and, even though they somehow lost to Stoke on the weekend, Marist have beaten Waimea Old Boys every time they have met this season. This Saturday’s match against Waitohi kicks off at Jubilee Park at 3pm.

[email protected]

Phillip RolloReporter

A 23 point haul from first-five Luke Thelin has helped Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys seal a home-semi final.Holding a tight 12-0 lead over Tapawera at Jubilee Park on Saturday, Waimea then ran in four second half tries to claim the 39-7 victory. Luke scored four of the tries while number eight Tim Fenson and winger Lee

McBrydie also crossed the line. Fullback Kristian Hall-Smith kicked three success-ful conversions and Luke chipped in with a drop goal before full-time.The win means Waimea Old Boys will finish second place after the round rob-in, with Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers ahead of them on points differential and

Waimea having the bye in the final round this weekend.Co-coach Wayne Bateman says it was an important win against a Tapawera side that was desperate to keep their season alive. “I think they held us to 12-0 at half-time but this result gives us a home semi-final now,” he says. “You’ve got to rely on your bench

and we’ve got some really good players.”Who their opposition will be is yet to be confirmed, with Collingwood and Riwaka tied in third on 30 points.Riwaka has beaten Waimea Old Boys this season, but Wayne has a message to any team they will be coming up against: “just bring it on!”

As part of the Project Janszoon ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Project Janszoon are planning aerial pest control to protect the park’s native species from rising rat and possum numbers. This pest control is essential for native species recovery and ecosystem restoration. The DOC Motueka Office and Project Janszoon intend to apply non-toxic pre-feed cereal baits during the first period of fine weather on or after the 21st of July, followed 5 or more days later by baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) over the follow-ing area of the national park and the Moncrieff Private Reserve.Description of the area12,359ha bounded by a line from the Awapoto Hut to Awaroa Inlet in the north, the Pikikiruna range in the west, the Inland track from Wainui Saddle to Tinline Bay in the south, and out to the coast in the east; but excluding the Abel Tasman Coast Track and 100m wide each side of it. The Marahau and Upper Takaka catchments are not affected. Large exclusion zones have been placed around the Torrent Bay and Awaroa townships.During the operation all inland tracks will be closed, but the Coast Track will remain open for use.Method of ControlCereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above areas. The baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2 cm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. This pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals.Always remember:• DO NOT touch bait• WATCH CHILDREN at all times• DO NOT EAT animals from this area• DEADLY TO DOGS, do not allow dogs access to animal carcassesObserve these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at public access points in the park. For further information, call David Rees at the Motueka Office, (03 528 1810) or visit the Motueka Office, cnr King Edward and High Streets, Motueka.A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed at the DOC Nelson Visitor Cen-tre, Motueka and Takaka Offices, 11am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
