“kept me sane”.The story starts around three years ago when Vicki – a local school teacher in her mid-30s – was told she was going through menopause and the chances of her getting pregnant were around 2 to 5 per cent. A week after she found out she was pregnant, in March this year, Vicki started bleeding heavily. She went in for a scan and her uterus was full of blood. Doctors told her that she probably wouldn’t be able to carry the baby. She says those weeks were “hor-rible” she was constantly sick but

the bleeding slowed and by week 13 the doctors said she was back on track. “But I felt that it wasn’t,” she says. “I felt things weren’t go-ing well at all.”At 21 weeks, while at a school sports tournament, Vicki’s waters broke, so she was rushed to hos-pital. The very next day she got the flu and was in isolation for ten days at Nelson Hospital. There she was repeatedly told that the baby wouldn’t survive if she gave birth before it had reached 24 weeks. “So it was pretty awful, I was so sick and trying to deal with this. We didn’t think we’d have a live baby then because it was another two or three weeks

before we got to the 24 week mark.”At exactly 23 weeks Vicki went into labour and they prepared to say goodbye to their baby. Then a call was made to Welling-ton Hospital specialists and they were prepared to take the Frosts – if they wanted to go. “So it was

completely surreal how everything changed. We really, really didn’t want a baby that had to fight for the first few months or years of his life, because it’s not fair on the baby. As

much as we desperately wanted a baby, we didn’t want it at the ex-pense of a baby having a miser-able life.”They decided to give it a go and Vicki was given drugs to suppress the labour. Two days later, on Au-gust 26, she gave birth to Jack, all 712 grams of him.Jack was rushed away with the doctors and his father, who was on hand to make a decision of whether to stop trying to save him if he was struggling too much. Vicki says even then she felt there was very little chance of Jack surviving. But he kept fighting and fighting. Even after five weeks of eve-rything going well, Vicki says nurses were still telling her not to get her hopes up. “I cried a lot, I spent a lot of time in tears. It was my only chance to have a baby and I really wanted to do what I could, but not at the expense of a

miserable life.”Jack has had plenty of obstacles to overcome, including compli-cations with his stomach, eyes, veins and lungs. But he’s come through them all and the prog-nosis for a normal, healthy life is excellent. Vicki says through the whole or-deal, her blog on her Facebook page has been a surprising source of strength. “The funny thing is I’m not big on Facebook and defi-nitely not a public person, but we were getting so many text mes-sages I decided to make a page with updates to keep people in-formed without having to con-stantly send text messages. “It was really just to let friends and family know and it just took off. It was really bizarre.”Vicki is hoping this week to write her favourite post yet. A picture of her young family in their own home for the first time.

Residents living close to Rich-mond’s central business area are becoming frustrated with cars being parked outside their homes, despite a new initia-tive by the Richmond Mall and Richmond Unlimited to ease the problem.Car parks are always at a pre-mium when people start flock-ing into the town for Christmas shopping and the Richmond Mall’s retailers move out of the mall car park to free-up spaces for customers. Although the mall and Rich-mond Unlimited are provid-ing free parking in the A & P Showgrounds and hiring a shuttle service to provide free transport into Richmond, most retailers are still parking on nearby streets, and Croucher St resident Ron Burt says he’s had enough. “The street is full which is really inconvenient for people living here,” Ron says. “We have a driveway for our car but when we have visitors they have to park way down the street and walk.“I’m also one of the volunteers who drives the St John shuttle and a couple of weeks ago I had to double park when we picked up a lady in Croucher St. The Richmond Mall and Rich-mond Unlimited are trying to be good neighbours by putting

on the parking and shuttle, but the retailers aren’t playing ball.”Richmond Unlimited chair-man, Brent Cheyne, says it’s disappointing that the show-grounds car park and shuttle are not being fully utilised. However, Brent is hopeful that retailers will start using the showgrounds car park and shuttle as the Christmas rush puts more pressure on car parks. “It has come at a cost to us and the mall, so I hope the uptake improves,” Brent says. “We wanted there to be park-ing available to attract more customers here without frus-trating the residents.”Mall manager Belinda de Cler-cq is also optimistic that more retailers will start to use the free service and says they “defi-nitely plan to do it again next year”. After a slow start, Belin-

da says 54 cars were parked in the showgrounds last Saturday.“It’s a great initiative but it’s just going to take time for people to get used to it,” she says. Shapers manager, Marie Nailer, says it’s important for custom-ers to have access to parking close to the shops, although she sympathised with staff who “need a car park as well”. Ma-rie says she lives close to Rich-mond and lets her staff “park at my house”.Farmers Richmond manager, Duncan Allen says they in-formed their staff about the free parking and shuttle and encouraged them to use it but could not make it compulsory. The shuttle service runs con-stantly between 7am and 9am in the morning and 5pm to 6.30pm in the evening and will finish on December 24.

Mums drive drunk with kidsAndrew Board

Drunk mums driving with children, or to pick up children, have shocked Nelson police over the past week.Ten drivers were caught over the drink driving limit over the weekend during a police opera-tion, but worryingly, three of the highest levels of intoxication came from mums, says Inspec-tor Jenni Richardson.“Our highest reading came from a pregnant woman with passengers in her car, and the third highest reading was a woman with a young baby in the back seat. You have to won-der how long it is until an innocent life is lost.”A third woman recorded a breath alcohol read-ing of 440mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, while on her way to pick up a child. The limit is 250 and the pregnant woman registered 880 when tested by police. Jenni says police were expecting to see an increase in the number of drivers testing in the 250-400 range after a recent law change dropped the legal limit from 400 to 250. “But what we’re seeing is breath alcohol readings in the 800s and 900s, which is outrageous,” she says.Just three weeks ago, police publicly told the Waimea Weekly that they would come down hard on drunk drivers this holiday period, but the message seems to have gone unnoticed, says Jenni. She says there would be an increased police presence on the roads in the lead up to Christ-mas and through the holiday period, with more checkpoints planned this week.

With just over a week until Christmas Day, locals are getting in the festive spirit and there’s plenty to help them do just that.On Saturday, the Carols by Glo-light was

held at Snowdens Bush in Brightwater and on Sunday Grace Church held their kids Christmas party. The Carols by Glo-light attracted a huge crowd, where Santa was the main attrac-

tion, along with locals performing on stage. At Grace Church, the festive scene was set from the moment you walked through the huge nativity display, com-plete with life-size camel.

Nelson and Tasman shoppers are feeling the Christmas spirit, with the city again recording the highest increase in spending, this time for the first two weeks of December.Hospitality is leading the charge nationally, with growth of nine per

cent, according to figures released yesterday by eftpos company Pay-mark. Overall Nelson recorded growth of 7.7 per cent, well above the national average of just 4.3 per cent, with $46.5 million spent through the network.

Shoppers in the Christmas spirit

A new network of mountainbike tracks is being built in a private forestry block in the Richmond Hills, continuing a tradition of the landowners opening up their property to the public. The Mountainbike Trails Trust started work on the first track in Rick and Sarah Griffin’s Silvan Hills forest above Champion Rd, earlier this month. Rick and Sarah have been allowing rec-reational access through Silvan Hills for “the last 20 years” and now have reached a formal agree-ment with the trust to establish a network of mountainbike tracks on their property.Although trust member Alan Eskrick says the Griffins’ offer is “very generous”, Rick insists they are just continuing a community-minded tradition started by the land’s former owner, Don Heslop. “Don was a very generous man and let people go through the property. He even put a walking track in there with signposts for every-one to use, so we are just following his example.“I used to ride horses and run up there when I was young and that’s how I became interested in the property. Now we are delighted that the land will continue to be used in the same way.”Alan says the Silvan Hills trails will fit well with the trusts’ objective of professionally building and managing tracks to make the Nelson-Tas-man region a national and international desti-nation for mountainbikers. They are also plan-ning some downhill tracks and eventually hope to link them to the mountainbike tracks in the Kingsland Forest above Richmond. “We marked out the track two weeks ago and essentially had the guys waiting with their dig-

gers running to get started,” Alan says. “It’s a real beginners track because that’s what there is a demand for but we’ll also be building a couple of intermediate tracks and an advanced one as well.”Alan says the project is also being supported by contractors who are donating their time and machinery to build the tracks. Trust member, Andrew Spittal of Ching Contracting, and Gary Donaldson of Donaldson Civil, have been work-ing on the new track which should be finished just after the New Year.“These guys are hoping to get the whole lot done in four or five months. I don’t know how we’d do it without them.”Another contractor, Malcolm Edridge of Mike Edridge Contracting, as well as an army of vol-unteers, have also been working on a new net-work of mountainbike tracks near St Arnaud.

The Richmond District Community Pa-trol will be hard to miss after they pur-chased a new, sign-written patrol vehicle to help keep our streets safer.Patrol coordinator, Mike Gill says the car had been owned by the Papakura Com-munity Patrol and was equipped with an on-board camera and flashing lights. It has been sign-written to clearly identify the vehicle and also to display the patrol’s sponsors.“It was such a good buy we had to put in a bid for it,” Mike says. “We were using a Tasman District Council car and put sig-nage on that, but it didn’t stand out - this

will give us a more recognisable presence on the streets.”Mike says the group, which has 25 vol-unteers, goes on patrol on Friday and Saturday nights and during the day in the school holidays when they monitor school grounds and carparks. The group is sponsored by the TDC which provides fuel while Mt Campbell Com-munications installed the car’s police ra-dio at no cost. Knapps Lawyers, Shapers and Endurance Spraying all made dona-tions to the group, while AMI donated comprehensive insurance cover.Anyone interested in joining the group can contact Mike on 0272864157 or call into the Richmond Police Station.

Facing a vote of no-confidence in his presidency of Nelson Grey Power, Neville Male says the “nasty character assassination” has shocked him. This Sunday, December 21, members of Nelson Grey Power will vote on whether to keep the for-mer Sport Tasman boss on, or turf him out.Neville says he wants to fight for his job because he believes he is still the best man to lead the organization into a more modern future.“I have deliberately refrained from making any public comment to date, but an unauthorised letter this week from the vice president [Kevin Gardiner] sacking the association’s elected sec-retary is the last straw,” he says.“In regard to the claims about me, I see them frankly as part of a ‘character assassination cam-paign’, designed to stop the progress of the re-structure programme and to overturn a unani-mous decision to terminate a position which the Association Management Committee unani-mously agreed was now no longer appropriate.”That role is that of the current manager, Pat Car-rick, who has been a strong member of a group keen to see the back of Neville. Neville says over the past few months he’s been accused of putting Grey Power funds into his own bank account, and has had a committee member call an applicant for a new job to tell her not to take it.“I have been asked by members and others why do I want to continue in the role while all of these nasty things are going on. My response has been that I believe Nelson Grey Power can do great things in the future for its members and the wider community, but it must change its im-age and modernize before that can happen.”Earlier this month the executive commit-tee passed a vote of no-confidence in Neville, prompting the full member vote this Sunday. The vote of no-confidence in Neville is at the Suburban Club on Sunday, December 21, at 2pm.

A launch that was built in Wel-lington in 1929 and has been in the same family for four, go-ing on five, generations has just been re-launched in Nelson af-ter its latest refit.Judith Glue’s grandfather, Roy Harvey, and his brother-in-law, Sam Weine, started build-ing the 35 foot kauri launch on a steep section behind Sam’s house in Kilbirnie in 1927. Veca was launched in 1929 and remained in Roy’s family for 58

of the next 85 years, with Judith and her husband Pete of Rich-mond completing the latest re-fit in Nelson earlier this month.Pete says Veca, which was named after Roy and Sam’s wives, Vera and Caroline, has a fascinating history, with her framing being constructed out of an “old man rata tree” Roy

and Sam cut down in Akata-rawa Forest near Wellington. They also had to build a ramp over the top of Sam’s house to get Veca out of the section and down a steep road to Evans Bay, where she was launched.“They had to use two old Wel-lington coal trucks to get her down the road,” Pete says. “It was so steep they put anchors into the road to stop the trucks and boat taking off down the hill.”

Family boat restored to former glory

Simon BloombergSenior [email protected]

Page 9: Waimea Weekly 17-12-14

Sadly, Roy had to sell Veca in 1941 because fuel prices had skyrocketed during World War II. However, Ju-dith’s father, Bruce Harvey, brought her back in 1968 when he saw her “tied to a mooring a forlorn state in Evans Bay” and she has stayed in the family ever since. “Roy spent most of his retirement restoring Veca for Bruce and then we acquired her as an inheritance. We pulled her out of the water again in 1985 and trans-ported her to Bill Gibbons’ old shin-gle plant in Lower Queen St for her second refit.“We took out every screw in the hull and re-fastened and re-caulked her and fibreglassed the topside, and then we re-launched her on Christ-mas Eve in 1987. I remember that because the Min-istry of Transport wouldn’t give us a permit to take an oversized load through town, but we went anyway.“It was a bit of a nightmare because the transporter got a flat tyre in the

middle of Stoke. There was traffic everywhere and I said to the guys ‘bugger the tyre, keep driving’.” The latest refit involved recon-structing the wheelhouse and Pete says he was a little concerned about

the boat being out of the water for five weeks. Although Veca took on some wa-ter when she was re-launched, the wooden hull soon closed up and be-came watertight and now Pete says “she is ready for the next genera-tion to take care of her”.Pete says Veca gets plenty of use with their children and grandchildren al-ways joining them for their annual Christmas boat-ing holiday to the Marlborough Sounds. “It gets a bit crowded with everyone aboard and the cabin’s a bit low, especially when you have sons who are six foot five and six foot four. But she’s

a lovely boat to sail and she’s very economical to run - we spend more on rum than we do on diesel.”

Christmas Day, Boxing Day & New Years Day

The sound of trumpets and horns heralded the festive season when the Nelson City Brass Band spread their annual Christmas cheer around the streets of Richmond last weekFormer president of the band, Pat Heaphy, emptied the shingle from his farm truck and drove around the streets while 13 members of the band sat in the back and played yuletide carols. The neighbourhood opened their doors and wandered out onto the streets to join in the festivities. Nelson City Brass have been playing Christmas carols in the streets of Nelson and Richmond for over 70 years. Established in 1857, it is one of the oldest brass bands in New Zealand. They are collecting donations on their travels, with all proceeds going towards the Nelson City Youth Brass Band, operating costs and instru-ment replacement. The Nelson City Brass Band will be playing in Richmond, Stoke, Brightwater and The Wood from 6.15pm to 9pm each day, weather per-mitting, up until December 23. For further information, please refer to their website www.nelsonbrass.org.nz

Mike Corkill says thanks:Good luck Mike, I hope you get to see your amazing Christmas

2014! xxx From a $1 Warrior! :) Nicky (via waimeaweekly.co.nz).

It’s a privilege to be a part of your journey. The love of NZ is with

you all. Deb Clarke (via waimeaweekly.co.nz).

I cried reading this yesterday. Sending my aroha to him and his

family. I have no idea what they’re going through, but I’m truly sorry to hear the updated information. Jannelle Patterson.

What I find sucks about this sit-uation is that so many families

and people get given so much from the government and they don’t even need or deserve it. This family, who really need

help, have struggled the entire time to try and raise the funds. My heart and prayers go out to Mike and his family. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Sarah-Hope Bailey.

I too felt tears when I read this yesterday. Much love to you and

your family xoxo. Kelly Watson.

What sad news to hear. Sending love and prayers to you and your

family. Verity Bartlett.

Really sorry to hear this. I’ve do-nated to Mike’s cause and a few

other people fighting cancer, fundrais-ing for life, extending treatment, and in two others it’s been too late, they’ve died

soon after. I wish these stories became public earlier so these poor people had more of a chance. Jasmin Price.

Such an evocative photo of Mike and his wife, capturing the aching

totality of their situation - the enduring bravery, the love, and the shadow which has come between them. May their fam-ily feel peace and love during the last of their time together. You are a commu-nity paper in the truest sense, Waimea Weekly; Mike’s gratitude for how you helped rally us all is such a wonderful testament to that. Melissa Short.

Butcher robbed:Poor chap really has been hit with the s*#t stick!! As for the

robbers, I do hope they get severe di-arrhoea from their Christmas dinners!! And then contract the clap!! Janelle Thorpe.

Many of us pass through the Richmond Mall several times during this run up time to Christmas. There is a special atmosphere there and around the other shops and meeting places of our district that we don’t find at any other time of the year. It is not only that shops, offices and other spaces are draped with colourful and sparkly decorations that makes the feeling so different. It is also the sense of excitement, of joy, of goodwill. Perhaps you have the thought, as I do, that it is a pity that such goodwill does not always extend to the rest of the year! I don’t mean that we should keep Christmas decorations up all the time – that would rather defeat their purpose. Rather it is the effort that many make to be especially sociable, especially joyful and especially generous that would surely translate well to the other eleven or so months of the year!Christians trace this effort to be peaceable and to show goodwill to all to the birth of Jesus as

outlined in the bible. Yet the birth of Jesus was only the beginning of his mission here on earth. This mission was to show in word and action the drawing near of God to all humanity. Christians often refer to this as God’s Kingdom breaking in to our human society.Living in God’s Kingdom is marked by the joy, generosity and sociability that we find especially at this Christmas time. Perhaps we all would do well to make special efforts to extend this goodwill to all into the New Year. Following the example of Jesus, this would extend particularly towards those in our community and society who are struggling. May the peace, joy and comfort of this Christmas season then be in our hearts and homes – not only now, but always!

F CUS ON WAKEFIELD

The Wakefield Feathers trophy with home team winners from 2014, Kevin Edwards, Bruce Smith and Trevor Woodbury.

Wakefield Feathers TrophyThe Wakefield Feathers trophy is played for at the annual New Year Invitational Tournament, with teams entering from around the region and afar. This year it will be held over two days from January 1. The trophy was first contested at Wakefield in 1912, and for a time, at an annual triples tournament. It’s thought to be the cap feathers from soldiers in the second Boer War, the first war in which NZ soldiers served overseas. After lapsing for some years, the feathers and their history were rediscovered and the trophy restored by Larry Short. The feathers were remounted in a new trophy, one set being reconstructed using photographic and computer techniques. The trophy was award-ed to the winners of the club’s cen-tennial tournament in February 2011 and at an annual invitational triples tournament to mirror the original concept. Call into the club if you are around over New Year, the club is located just across the road from the craft fair.

Community BowlsCommunity bowls will be recom-mencing on Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 6pm until 8pm for a further 4 weeks. Grants Corner to Corner will be included on Febru-ary 19 and 26.All previous and any new players are welcome to come along for a fun time. Make a team with family and friends or you can be placed into teams on the day. Adults will be $5 while children are free and a sausage sizzle and drinks will be available.Contact Tony on 541 8316 for fur-ther details.

Craft FairWakefield’s thirty-seventh annual craft fair is coming up next year. The fair will take place on Friday, January 2, 2015 on the Wakefield Village Green and in the Wakefield Hall. With over 60 stall available, and plenty of food and drink, come and check out the talents of Wake-field’s crafters. The fair runs from 8:30am until 3:30pm.

McGlashen Pharmacy is help-ing young Nelson judoka, Finn Sweetman, reach his goal of competing at the Oceania Judo championships in New Caledonia in April. The Nayland College brown belt has already competed at the last two Oceania champs, in Auckland last year and Cairns in 2013. And last week, Finn’s sport’s travel fund for the next Oceania’s received a timely $1000 boost when he received McGlashen Pharma-cy Young Achiever Scholar-ship. “It’s a huge help winning the scholarship,” Finn says. “It’s rare to get funding outside the sport so I’d really like to thank Andrew.”Andrew says Finn was a stand-out applicant for the $1000 scholarship, which is open to students aged 16 and under across Nelson-Tasman who excel in sports, music, out-side interests or academically. Finn has been a judoka at the Nelson Judo Club for eight years and has also performed well academically.“It’s difficult for young athletes to fundraise, especially in mi-nority sports like judo,” An-drew says. “I hope this helps him achieve his goals.”

New Year’s resolutionsHow to get your finances in shape and stick to it!

Track your spending. Check your receipts and statements. Find where your money is going.

Categorise your spending- e.g. food, takeaways, clothing, car costs.

Tally up each category for the week/month/year. You might find some surprises.

Identify areas where you can trim the fat- no need to totally cut out something you love. Trimming a little from many areas can free up a lot of cash.

Use the freed up cash for your goals (e.g. paying debt, saving for house).

You can make a plan for your money at Sorted.org.nz.

Keep it realistic. Don’t forget the fun stuff! Always remember the reasons/goals that are

motivating you to make the changes. Review your budget regularly, things change.

Farmers in our region will face chal-lenges over the next 12 to 18 months following Fonterra’s announcement of the reduced farm gate milk price for the 2014/15 season. The price has been dropped from the previous forecast of $5.30 per kg of milk solids to $4.70 per kg of milk solids. The drop can be attributed to global

milk supply remaining greater than de-mand which has led to lower world milk prices. This represents an estimated $6.1 bil-lion decrease for the New Zealand dairy industry since the high of the 2013/14 season. The pressure on Nelson-Tasman farm budgets will be great and local dairy farmer, Julian Raine, says he is not sure how any farmers can make money from

the reduced price.“We are naturally concerned that we won’t make money at that level but we are also aware that dairy prices can go up wildly like last season but also drop down too. Things are competi-tive, stocks are high in China plus Eu-rope and the USA are competing. We are conscious of the decisions we make now, however so far, banks have been supportive,” says Julian.

Waimea College showed plenty of ini-tiative, teamwork and speed, as well as some good old fashioned determination, to finish second in the national Get2Go Challenge final at Hillary Outdoors on Great Barrier Island last week.Waimea’s initiative and team work paid dividends on the first two days of the team’s outdoor adventure event when it finished second after the problem solving section. The team then showed speed, and when the going got tough, plenty of courage and determination, during the two-day expedition and mul-tisport race on the final day.“The team did really well,” coach and teacher, Marcus Swain says. “They stepped up big-time and showed a lot of courage.“We had one of the girls throwing up be-fore the first day of the expedition. She was quite sick but we got her to the start and she hung in there all day.“The next day, Maggie was white as a sheet and we thought she’d have to pull out but she kept going. The rest of the team towed her around and she gutsed it out - they were all very determined.”Marcus says Waimea’s Mikayla Lowry, Theo Smith, Maggie McLean, Brooke

Robertson, Mac Karalus, Jaimie Pres-

tidge, Cameron Jones and Harry Talbot laid the foundation for their second-placing by showing good teamwork in the problem-solving challenges. They also excelled in the kayaking which was a big part of the two-day expedition sec-tion.Team member, Mac, says the toughest challenge was the second day of the ex-pedition race when they covered about

26 kilometres on land and sea in seven and a half hours. “We’d already done six and half hours on the first day of the ex-pedition race so we were all really tired,” Mac says. Waimea finished on 2144 points, just 233 behind winners Trident from Whakatane. Twelve teams of eight, year 9 and 10 students from schools around New Zealand competed in the final.

A very special thanks to local businesses, individuals and community organisations who supported St John in 2014. As a charity we rely on the generosity of our community to ensure we can provide our vital services.

• St John’s paid and volunteer ambulance staff provide emergency and non-emergency care, patient transfers, events medical services and air support.

• Our volunteers ensure the Health Shuttle, Caring Caller and Friends of the Emergency Department services are available for those who need extra support.

• St John provides valuable youth and schools programmes, first aid training, first aid kits, defibrillators and medical alarms to enhance the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.

Your support truly does make a difference to the patients we care for, the people we assist and the staff and volunteers who provide the services in the Nelson Area.Donations, grants, sponsorship and bequests received in 2014 have directly supported these services. We have purchased a wide range of new equipment for our local ambulance fleet and comfortable furniture for Nelson and Richmond ambulance stations and provided support to our 120 volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our dedicated volunteers who freely give their time to support their community. We wish you a safe and happy Festive Season.

Berries ripe for the pickingNelson, Christmas and berries are a match made in heaven, so a trip to Tasman Bay Ber-ries should be top priority this summer. The Tasman Bay Berry Company is a family busi-ness, passion-ate about sharing the delights of summer with the public. Their shop on McShane Rd has expanded even further since last year and owners Maree and Glen Holland are getting ready for the busy holiday period, introducing some new solutions to keep queu-ing to a minimum. Designated stalls catering to customers wishing to pick their own or pick up online orders will mean the shop is freed up to deal with those purchasing ice creams or fresh, pre-packaged berries, and their car park attendant will help direct traffic so everyone can come in and enjoy what Tasman Bay Ber-ries has to offer. The expansion of the business has also led to a new animal enclosure behind the pack house. Children will love Muz and Cuz, the piglets, Lily and Lola the lambs and

their family of goats. Maree says the idea of Tasman Bay Berries is to be a destination for families who can come out and experience the country atmosphere

of picking their own berries, re-laxing at a pic-nic table under the shade sails with a real fruit ice cream, and seeing and feed-ing the animals. Tasman Bay Berries offers a casual and rustic feel, perfect for a morning or af-

ternoon of collecting your own black raspber-ries, raspberries or boysenberries. Strawber-ries are also available from the shop, along with frozen berries, ice creams and 100 per cent natural, homemade jams, created with Tas-man Bay Berries quality fruit. With the shop staying open until the end of January, make the most of Tasman Bay Berries. Either call in and see them on 37 McShane Rd, they’re open every day from 9am until 5:30pm, or visit their website at www.tasmanbayberries.co.nz to pre-order your berries.

A bid to get more girls playing cricket in Nelson is off to a promising start, with more than 40 taking part in a new compe-tition. Nelson Cricket Association eventually hopes to get up to 200 girls aged 6-13 turn-ing up on Thursday evenings at Green-meadows during the summer to play and be coached, as it seeks to build on a re-newed interest in the game among local women. The free initiative is being partly funded by a $3064 KiwiSport grant from Sport Tas-man, with Nelson Cricket picking up the other half of the cost. Nelson Cricket community cricket coor-dinator, Jon Routhan, says the girls play a modified game called Quikhit. Players are divided evenly into teams and bat in pairs for three overs, losing three runs every time they get out.

There is also a 10 metre exclusion zone around the pitch where fielders are not al-lowed until a batswoman hits the ball. This teaches the girls about running between the wickets and the importance of fielders walking in with the bowler, he says. Those waiting to bat or play receive coach-ing, as the aim is to teach them about the game as well as having fun. Jon says the competition, which started last month, has received a great response. “The girls love their cricket and play hard every time, and parents are stoked to have cricket readily available for their girls.’’ Some who had never picked up a cricket bat before had excellent hand-eye coordi-nation, while their teachers are keen for them to give someone new a go, he says. The aim is to upskill girls so more could play Saturday club cricket and go onto higher honours.

Nelson Girls Under 15 Rep Cricket Team is getting ready to take on the all important Cen-tral Districts Under 15 Girls Tournament. With the cricket season having started in November, the girls have been playing in a com-bined competition for one of two clubs, Nelson College/Nel-son Prep or the Nelson com-bined team, made up of play-ers from the remaining schools including Waimea and Garin. Their selection for the Under 15 rep team a month ago has given them plenty of time to practice and create that all important team bond that will, hopefully, produce some successful results during the tournament. “I think there’s some really, re-ally talented players,” says Nel-son Crickets Jon Routhan. “It’s quite young, so there’s probably at least half of the team who will still be under 15 next year which is really exciting, but be-cause it’s our first time going up there, it’s hard to put a finger on how results will go, but I think that there’s some really talented

cricketers in there and they cer-tainly love their cricket, every single one of them will certainly be trying their best to do well.”Their coach Kate Stiven is also a source of inspiration and great role model to have, being a part of the Central District Ladies team. The tournament runs from De-cember 16 -18 and will be held in Palmerston North. Along with the Nelson team, sides from Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wanganui, Wel-lington and Wairarapa will also be competing. The competition is the only and ultimate tour-nament for the Nelson Girls Under 15 Rep team and from all the teams participating, an overall Central Dis-tricts Under 15 Team will be named at the end, followed by train-ing camps and further games against fellow first class districts. The Nelson Under 15 team hasn’t been formed for several years now, let alone

been able to compete in this competition, but a growth in player numbers has made it pos-sible to conduct a rep team se-lection process. “Nelson Crick-et has been doing a lot of work around the women’s game, and introducing and bringing back women’s cricket. We’ve got 100 girls playing now on Saturdays across various teams and ages,” says Jon.The end of the tournament will see the girls split back into their club sides to finish off the year. “The hope is to keep these sorts of girls together so we can keep them going through the ranks and potentially, maybe form an under 17 team in a few years time, that’s the goal,” says Jon.

Members of the Nelson Girls Under 15 Representative Cricket team, from left, Shakia-Lee Biggs from Richmond, Jodie Stratford from Tapawera, Kate Gaging from Wakefield and Amber Frams from Stoke. The girls will play six games at the Central Districts Under 15 Girls tournament held in Palmerston North this week. Photo: Monique Bergman

The final two fights for next year’s Fight 4 Victory have been confirmed. All ten bouts have now been an-nounced and the latest will see two engineers square up against each other, while Stonewood Homes co-owner Rhys Horn-castle will battle Paul Hammett, brother of former All Black, Mark Hammett.Engineer Karl Griffith, of Tal-ley’s, will fight Anchor Engineer-ing owner Heath Botica. All four men say they’ve never boxed before but Paul admitted to a few fights “without gloves”.Victory Boxing Charitable Trust programme director, Paul Hampton, says he’s delighted with the card. “We’re really excited to get all ten fights, it’s been a long process but now we can start training and re-ally get into it.”The card now has lawyers, chefs, hairdressers, a police officer, an army officer, engineers, a city councillor, a newspaper editor and business owners.Paul says the range of people who have put their names forward has been a real highlight. “We’re really happy with the names that have come forward and with the range of back-grounds, and all of them are there to support the programme.”Corporate tables for the event on April 4 are sold out and general admission tickets will go on sale in late January.
