Hearing shotguns echoing in the air, and coming across dying piglets on the track, wasn’t what one Richmond man expected when he was walking his dogs last week. The man -- who didn’t want to be named -- believes walkways in the Dellside Reserve, up Kingsland Forest, are attracting hunting and poaching, and he hopes it will end before some-one is hurt. He says he saw a man walking with a rifle and hunting dogs, three weeks after seeing another person in a ute with open dog boxes on the back. He also saw three “half eaten” piglets. He had reported all incidents to Tasman District Council. “They were half eaten, it was a bloody ugly sight but they were still on the track, just off where you walk. If I was a young girl and saw that I’d probably throw up,” he says. “It’s obvious that pig hunting is going on, they must’ve got the

mother and the piglets didn’t survive the attack.”The last incident was when he spotted a hunter with a rifle in a sleeve slung over his shoul-der and heard gunshots shortly after. “It was about 9.39am, I heard ‘kaboom!’, you could hear it right up the valley. It was defi-nitely a shot gun. It’s only 200 yards from the houses on a re-serve where there are heaps of people.”Tasman District Council’s re-serves officer Stephen Richards says while permits can be grant-ed for hunting, the Kingsland Forest area was not one of them, and this case was “very unusual”. “It’s a unique situation and I’d very much like to chat with the person who is involved. We take this very serious, it’s not some

Hope’s Ollie Biggs, who won the Humes Young Achiever Award at the Nelson Marlborough Contractors Federation annual awards held at the Rutherford Ho-tel in Nelson on Saturday night, says the award is a reflection of his employer’s commitment to staff training programmes. Ollie has become a key member of Ching Contracting’s team since joining the Stoke-based company after finishing school seven years

ago and has completed a number of qualifications, including Na-tional Certificate in Infrastruc-ture pipe-laying level three. Ollie is presently studying for National Certificate in Water Service and says Ching’s has a policy of “en-couraging their staff to gain new qualifications.”

“I have always been interested in machinery and my parents en-couraged me to get a trade, so this is a perfect job for me. I like working outdoors and there’s al-ways plenty of variety too.”Ollie is the principal operator of Ching’s new five-tonne excavator and has been second-in-charge at a number of construction sites. He also gained experience as site

foreman at the Paton’s Rock stormwater upgrade project at Takaka.Higgins Contracting Nelson won the top honour, the Hirepool Supreme Award, for the second consecutive year. Last year, Hig-gins Contracting Nelson won the Supreme Award for its work on the Waikawa Marina near Picton and this year it made it two in a row winning the award for com-pleting a $2.15 million contract at the Picton Marina. Higgins Nelson manager An-drew Murphy says the contract involved redeveloping the mari-na basin, constructing a sea wall and boat ramp and laying 11,000 square metres of asphalt as well as altering the marina’s histori-

cally significant memorial gates. Andrew says Higgins had up to 35 people on site at the height of the project which was completed by the end of November. The contract is also a finalist for next month’s national awards. Tasman Civil won the H & S Professionals Health and Safety Award, Ching Contracting and Donaldson Civil were joint-win-ners of the Crombie Lockwood Award for projects valued under $200,000, Fulton Hogan won the Cable Price Award for projects valued between $200,000 and $750,000 and Downer NZ won the Land Dimensions Limited Award for projects valued from $750,000 to $1.5 million. Hig-gins had earlier won the Hynds Award for projects valued over $1.5 million.

thing we can tolerate at all,” he says. “There’s no tolerance for people with firearms in a pub-lic reserve area and this is definitely a matter for the police.”He admits there were “a lot of pigs up there” at this time of the year, but hunting was strictly for-bidden and all sightings of people carrying fire-arms should be report-ed. “We do not issue any permits for hunting in the Dellside, Kingsland Forest area. It’s used so

heavily for recreation, there’s no room for peo-ple with firearms.”Police say there are a number of offences to cover any situation in-volving people carrying guns unlawfully, includ-ing up to three months in prison for possessing a firearm without a li-cence.Both Stephen and Nel-son Police say they would encourage mem-bers of the public to report any incidents which could involve someone with a firearm in that area.

Annette Fenwick,Redwood Valley.

“No I haven’t been. We haven’t got Sky Sport and I don’t

really watch TV, I’m usually busy.”

Deborah Norris,Richmond.

“Absolutely! I’ve been follow-ing all of them. I think I like it better than the Olympic

Games.”

Graham Venning,Richmond.

“A little bit. I’ve been watching a bit of everything really.”

Juergen Sparrer,Richmond.

“No, but I think the Com-monwealth Games is impor-tant to New Zealand, if not more important than the

Olympic Games.”

It’s been an exciting few days at the Commonwealth Games for Nelson’s top sporting stars – and equally so for their fami-lies.On Monday morning, lawn bowler Jo Edwards won Nel-son’s first gold medal of the games with a thrilling win over the defending Common-wealth Games champion from England. Watching on was her “immensely proud” coach and husband, Dave Edwards.Jo later said she’d worked hard-er before these games than any other. “It’s a very, very proud moment. A hell of a lot of hard work has gone into this campaign. I’ve probably worked harder than for any other,” she told the New Zealand Herald.Another thrilled Nelsonian was Tim Brenton as he watched his daughter Amy Mcilroy win bronze in the women’s fours, alongside fellow Nelsonian Val Smith.Tim and his wife Raewyn were in the stands cheering and he told Waimea Weekly it was a great moment. “A dream come

true, really. The walk into the stadium at the opening was incredible she said. She truly proudly represents New Zea-land.”Amy’s husband Shannon Mcil-roy is also competing in the lawn bowls. His triples team were knocked out in the quar-ter finals, but he still has the singles to come. “It’s wonderful to have one, let alone both of them [competing in Glasgow]. Shan is definitely very much part of the family – he lived with us for four or five years before they were married.”

There are 11 Nelson athletes at the games and so far the medal tally for them is three. One of each colour after Bryce Heem’s All Black sevens side lost the gold medal match against South Africa, earning them a silver medal.Tim says the atmosphere and hospitality at the games is fantastic. “We’ve been so im-pressed by the hospitality of the helpful and friendly local Scottish residents.”Amy, Val and Jo are all in ac-tion again this week, as are An-ita Punt’s women’s Blacksticks.

Repair SpecialistsIt may have been a chilly Sunday morn-ing at the Appleby Reserve but that didn’t stop a dedicated group of volunteers who planted thousands of trees. The Tasman District Council group Keep Richmond Beautiful and the Auckland-based trust, Sustainable Coastlines, along with some enthusiastic locals, all got stuck in, planting up to 3000 trees around the Waimea River park area. Sustainable Coastlines Sam Judd said their involvement in the plant was part of a nationwide road show called “Love Your Water” that has been running training workshops, educational talks and ripar-ian tree planting events in every region of New Zealand. “Out of 16 regions that we’ve been work-ing in this winter, Tasman has actually been one of the standouts. It’s been made really easy; people have been really enthu-siastic. Lots of people showed up to the workshops from lots of different groups,” says Sam.

New smart power meters, which will be installed in up to 40,000 properties around Nelson and Tasman over the next two years at a cost of $15-20 million, will re-duce power outages and not result in an increase in electricity charges.Network Tasman, which owns and oper-ates the electricity distribution network in the Nelson-Tasman region, excluding Nel-son City, will be spending $15-20 million to replace existing power meters with the new smart meters starting in September.Advanced metering development manager Andrew Stanton says the smart meters will automatically relay electricity useage to

power companies via radio signal and can provide consumers with important infor-mation about their power consumption.Andrew says smart meters will also mean customers will not be required to provide keys to access houses to read internal me-ters, while power accounts will be based upon actual consumption, not estimates. In the future, customers may also be able to set alarms to alert them if their power usage is too high and set energy-efficient appliances to interact with the advanced meters to manage electricity costs. However, Andrew says the big advantage will be that Network Tasman will receive

information on power outages or potential problems with the network, allowing it to

quickly repair, or even pre-empt, faults. The meters will also automatically cutout when there is a power overload, reduc-ing the average power outage time due to blown fuses from 99 minutes to two min-utes. “We will know immediately when there is an outage rather than relying on a customer to phone us with a problem. We’ll also be able to identify abnormal voltages that may be a precursor to a fail-ure and fix the faults before they happen.”Andrew says they haven’t yet finalised the programme for the rollout of the new me-ters although property owners will be noti-fied before the meters are installed.

Buyers like to walk around the garage looking to see if their important bits and pieces will fit, so make it easy for them, if you have bike hooks use them. Garden tools can be stored in a tidy manner and if your laundry is in the garage then make sure that it is kept as a laundry and not a place for rubbish and clutter.

Spring is almost with us, you don’t have much time. September is a great time to list your property, so that you have three months to sell and move into your new home before Xmas.

Thinking of a Spring Sale? If you are thinking of selling your property in spring, then now is the time to start the preparation. Start by having an appraisal done and ask your agent to tell you what to focus on and how to make an action plan.

Think ahead, for example your gardens will look lovely with some spring colour but that doesn’t happen overnight. Pot up some containers now so that they are established when you list your property, prune the roses and any overgrown shrubs, they look so much better with new growth.

It is important to de-clutter. Make your home look spacious and easy for buyers to visualise their furniture in your home. Move any large pieces of furniture now, as this will give the indentations in the carpet time to bounce back. Look behind the curtains, repaint any condensation marks, clean the sliding door tracks and clean the gutters. This is also the time to take a look at your garage.

After 20 years of excellent service as Waimea Intermediate School librarian, Annette McK-itrick was long overdue for some recognition. So when Annette was presented with a School Library Association of New Zealand Merit Award at the school assembly last Friday it was not surprising that she got a standing ovation. Annette received the award for “promotion of literacy and enjoyment of reading”, and all the teachers and pupils at Waimea Intermediate were delighted the national association had given her the stamp of approval.“We presented the award to her this morning at assembly and the whole school gave her a spontaneous standing ovation,” acting princi-pal Trish Smith says. “The library is an essen-

tial part of modern learning and Annette does an excellent job.“The library is the hub of information tech-nology and research, and Annette has a really good knowledge of all the reference books. She also manages the staff library - she is invalu-able to the school.”Interestingly, Annette started her working life as a nurse before taking time out to raise her family and that’s when she decided to become a librarian.“I enjoyed teaching my own children to read so much I started doing some voluntary work at the school library,” Annette says. “When the librarian left, they offered me the job and I’ve been here ever since.”

NEWSin briefPOLICE FRUSTRATED BY CAR THEFTS: More than 350 cars have been broken into this year, almost half of which were unlocked. Police say they’ve been push-ing the message for Nelsonians to lock their cars over the past few years, but it hasn’t had much of an impact. For the six months from January 1 to June 30, 367 offences have been reported to police in-volving the theft of property from motorvehicles. Of these, 44 per cent, or 161 of-fences, have involved thefts from vehicles that were unlocked or insecure.

FREE SNOWBOARD COMPETITION: This year’s Playhouse Cafe’s Jib Jam snowboard and ski event will be free to attend. Held on August 8, the all-ages, family-friendly event, begins with warm-ups from 6pm, before the competition commences at 6:30pm. It’s not a lot of fun getting out of bed early in the morning especially in winter but a dedi-cated group of parents and grandparents are happily do-ing it three times a week just to make life easier for some of the Tasman district’s up-and-coming swim stars. The Tasman Swim Club coach Andy Adair was concerned that members of the club’s age group squad were strug-gling to get ready for school in time after their morning train-ing sessions. The squad trains five mornings a week for two hours, starting at 5.15, leaving swimmers only about 40 min-utes to eat breakfast and get to school.Andy suggested they could start a breakfast club to pro-vide a poolside breakfast for the swimmers, and a group of parents and grandparents are taking up the challenge. The breakfast club was formed about a year ago and parent Lisa Dunn says it is proving extremely popular with the swimmers and their families. “We have swimmers coming in from the Moutere and Ma-pua and it’s been a lifesaver for them,” Lisa says. “It’s also re-ally convenient for the swim-mers who live in Richmond and Nelson, because it means

they don’t have to rush home or eat breakfast on the way to school.”Lisa says they provide a vari-ety of cereals, toast, yoghurt and drinks, and a special cooked breakfast on Fridays. The breakfast club is run by parents and extended family members, including George McKenzie, Garry and Jenny Smith, Delys Harwood, Man-dy Bishop and Jodi McKenzie and is generously sponsored by Stoke New World.George, who is the grandfa-ther of Sam McKenzie, says he doesn’t mind getting up at 5.45am to help out because “it gets me going”. Swimmer Samantha Smith, 14, who goes to Garin College,

says the poolside breakfasts are not only a big time saver, they are also “a lot more so-cial” than quickly eating some-thing on the way to school. Sa-mantha says the breakfast club also means Friday morning training sessions are one of the highlights of the week. “We get waffles and pancakes and cinnamon scrolls on Friday. When you are in the middle of a hard set you always think about the breakfast.”The swimmers also help out by doing their own dishes while the ASB Aquatic Centre provides storage for the club’s fridge and food. The Tasman Swim Club’s age group squad has swimmers between the ages of 11 and 18.

It’s not every day you win a free trip to Fiji, so you can imagine how excited Annetta Hodg-es and her best friend Maureen Sharland are feeling right now as they plan which swim suit to take and which pair of sandals while the rest of us settle in for a few more frosts. Shuttleworth Painters & Decora-tors are to thank for the winter holiday after their promo-tion which saw any-one who accepted a quote done between May 5 and July 11 go in the draw to win a luxury trip for two to Fiji. Waiting for them on arrival would be five nights at the five star Sofi-tel Fiji Resort and Spa, including full cooked breakfasts and transfers. Thanks to the very helpful team at Harvey World Travel Richmond, the two friends are booked and ready to go and are very grateful for the op-portunity. “We’re very excited. I have been before but Maureen hasn’t been to Fiji before. It’s 38 years since I was there. The brochures tell us all sorts of things but they’re more for younger people so we’ll just have to wait till

we get there to find out what we’ll be doing,” says Annetta. Annetta and Maureen have been friends for 50 years; ever since they met nursing in the Nelson hospital. Maureen says she feels very

honoured that she was invited along and Annetta says Maureen was her first choice as a trav-elling companion. “I couldn’t take any of my family because I thought it would be unfair to take one of them and not the other. I have a lot of family but you can’t take them all.” Annetta was ex-tremely surprised she won the trip at all considering she only put her quote in

a week before it was due to be drawn. “I rang Maureen and told her I’d take her if I won it and then I had to ring her back and tell her ‘get out your bikini’ we’re going.” Annetta will also be looking forward to seeing her new bedroom and living room once Shuttle-worth Painters & Decorators have given it a new lick of paint.

When Margaret Green, a vol-unteer of 70 years, received a letter from council last week, she thought she might have been in trouble. “You imme-diately think there’s something wrong when you get a letter from the council,” she says. “I thought ‘oh my gosh, I’ve paid my rates’.”But her concern turned into joy when she opened the letter and found out she was one of ten people that would receive a Tasman District Council Com-munity Award, recognising the work she has done with the community. “I was just totally blown away.”The Richmond volunteer, who turns 80 next month, has been helping people since she was just a child living on an apple orchard in Ruby Bay. “It was a small community but every-one helped each other. All the men were away at war so it was just second nature to help each other.”Her first tasks as a volunteer included visiting the elderly to give them company, setting up a youth group, mowing lawns and doing gardening for peo-

ple in the community. She married a minister and it was all “full on” from there. “I set up a youth group, after school kids programmes, visit-ing people, and just supporting people.”Margaret’s most recent volun-teer work has included men-toring Pacific Island students, cooking meals and making sure people have bedding. She has helped out with Red Cross and the meals on wheels pro-gramme, and gardening for disabled people. The Community Award was the first time she had been for-mally recognised, but she says

the work she does is for love. She says it keeps her busy in re-tirement, and she doesn’t plan to stop serving the community. “No plans to stop at all. No way. I’d rather fall off a ladder gardening or slip down a bank rescuing someone and die that way than to sitting as a blob, I just couldn’t stand that.”The other nine recipients were; Gordon Currie, Gertrude Mary Keddie, Warren Owen Webby, Roy Reid, Colin Gibbs, Peter Webster, Mary Garner, Paul Wilkins and Eileen Stew-art. They received a framed certificate at Tasman District Council on Friday.

People in the Afri-can town of Torwood will no longer have to walk for hours just to get clean water at the crack of dawn – and it’s all thanks to the sup-port of a Nelson char-ity and its donors.A small team of vol-unteers from Water for Prosperity – who organize the annual Walk for Water event at Rabbit Island each year – returned to Tor-wood in June to install a further eight ground water-bores. Six of those were funded by the Emirates Airline Foundation and two were funded thanks to the generosity of Nelson sponsors and donors.Last year, volunteers from Water for Pros-perity visited the town and installed three ground water-bores, two in schools and one on council land. But to reduce long queues at those bores, and to increase accessibil-ity, Gideon Matorino and his wife Sibusisi-we Matorino, David Barnes, Philip Catch-pole and Paul Sinclair returned last month, focusing on new wa-ter-bores spread across the town, and near

buildings constructed in the 60s with no run-ning water.“There was a ratio of 35,000 people to one bore, so we thought we’d go do some more in the community to reduce the long queues and the walking dis-tances,” says Gideon. “The installation of the eight bores and the valuable source of water have reached a far greater num-ber of people than we thought, helping well over 20,000 children

and adults. We’ve made a real impact into the community and you could feel the appreciation from the community.”Water for Prosperity is planning to return to Torwood in 2015 to in-stall more water-bores, and to construct basic showers and toilet fa-cilities in a residential area which houses 1000 people. “At the moment they’re travel-ling two kilometres to the nearby bush, and it’s a real mission.”

Tadmor church:The Tadmor Church So-ciety wants to keep its re-

dundant century-old St James’ church for weddings and funer-als (22 July). However, the way to save any church from redun-dancy is for the living to partici-pate regularly in Sunday worship when available. Ren Kempthorne.

Light Festival:Brian Riley, the chair of the trust for Light Nelson,

would be pleased to hear from those with great suggestions. The neon arrows idea is one. All those who support this event, let’s get behind it with some voluntary time. Artists are people too and hold down jobs to afford to do what they love - to create. Let’s get behind them as they make Nelson a much more fun and in-teresting place to live and don’t forget to put your money where your mouth is. (In the donation boxes at both gateways). Yvonne Denise.

1080:The Conservation Min-ister has confirmed that

the largest drop ever of 1080 is getting underway over 1,000,000

hectares. As usual, he delights in scare tactics by quoting numbers in zillions with little or no scien-tific basis for such claims. This is in the belief that he can fool most of the people, most of the time. He makes no reference to the killing of many species, invertebrates, birds, including natives and in-nocent mammals all of which die a death that any self respect-ing country would not permit. This method has been used for at least 50 years in New Zealand. It has failed and will continue to fail until a growing global horror is brought to bear on such indefen-sible killing across this country. It is a chilling fact that New Zea-land uses over 90 per cent of the annual world production of 1080. Guess who owns the manufactur-ing capacity for this obscenity? “Clean Green”-- Yeah Right!Douglas Carter, Nelson.

Rocks Rd:Some Councillors can’t wait to spend $14 million

of our money on a cycleway/walk-way proposal for Rocks Rd. Wait until the Southern Link is built and this will become a local road. Wide enough for parking, traffic and a 3 metre walkway. Introduce

a load limit and a speed limit. Use the $10 million of R funds to fix dangerous intersections with se-rious accident records on SH1. Cynthia McConville.

Fix the damn slips along there first.

Elizabeth DeHar.

I like the more expensive option, simply because

it separates the cyclists from the traffic with more than a painted line on the road. Dez Tinee.

Bicycle Nelson Bays has always

advocated for better infra-structure to help people cycle and walk safely and to encourage more people towards active transport. We aim to make Nelson a healthier, more livable city and hopefully this project is a step towards that. We will be looking closely at the material provided by council on this project and we will post our views on the options once we’ve considered the designs and their implications. We welcome your ideas

and opinions throughout this process. John-Paul Pochin.

Sugary drinks banned by NCC:Are there any council premises that aren’t shut

down as they are earthquake risks? Jessica D’Evereux.

Can un-derstand

why everybody is leaving Nel-son and mov-ing to Tasman. Stupid call, next

Waimea College students have been busy since the beginning of the year preparing for their take on West Side Story. And now it’s show time, with the final touches put on the stage, costumes, lights and dialogue all completed.West Side Story is set in New York in the 1950s and is based around two rival gangs – the Sharks and the Jets – and a love story which divides them. “It’s very loosely based on the story of Romeo and Juliet and about overcoming the struggles between the two gangs,” says director Melanie Stewart.Melanie says West Side Story had all of the aspects they needed for another success-ful production. “It’s a musical with singing,

acting and dancing, it has a nice big cast, it was challenging with challenging music.”The cast includes 57 students, while there are another 30 in the orchestra and 25 backstage. The orchestra began work on the music even before school started this year, and the cast has been rehearsing since Feb-ruary. Melanie says it’s coming together re-ally well. “We’re really excited about it and these guys just work so hard. We’ve had kids in during the holidays painting and cutting out stars, it’s been amazing.”West Side Story begins tonight and runs for four nights. Tickets are available from the school’s finance office and are $20 for adults and $15 for students.

A week after a hugely successful quiz night, Mike Corkill was admitted to Nelson Hospital and will remain there for a week. The Nelson father of six is trying to raise $100,000 for life-saving surgery to replace his lungs.Mike was born with a condition that makes his lungs work harder than normal. He will die if he doesn’t receive the transplant.Last Friday, just under $5000 was raised from a quiz night, bringing his total to $30,000. But time is running out. Mike is likely to be on oxygen full time when he is released from hospital. He says doctors told him he was close to heart failure and he had an extra 20 kilograms of flu-id in him. “I’m feeling a lot better than on Fri-day. Every time I coughed I was almost passing out. But I’m still positive.”He also wanted to thank everyone who turned up to is quiz night and those who donated. He made a special mention of the team at Waimea Weekly for their efforts on the night. To donate to Mike’s fundraising account visit Kiwibank, 38-9006-0093683-00.

went through a major re-build process to meet two of their strategic goals. They now also have better com-munication with the busi-ness community with a regular monthly newsletter. Richmond Unlimited are hoping to see the individual businesses take on board this website directory of what is available in Richmond and build their own listing to en-hance their exposure to po-tential customers.Richmond Unlimited com-mittee, TDC and NZTA are currently working together on a Richmond gateway sig-nage project with the first

two “gateway signs” at plan-ning stage. This has been a huge, time consuming pro-ject but one that is of major importance for directing people to Richmond CBD.The committee are also working closely with the council to make sure that the Richmond Town Centre Upgrade is “future-proofing” our town and that locals and businesses alike have the op-portunity to contribute to this vital project.Annual events organised by the Richmond Unlimited committee offer opportuni-ties for community, fun and family entertainment that is

resenting the business voice and ensuring that we are able to share our wonderful town with visitors and locals alike.

We are very excited to welcome Beckie Marshall into the great team here at House of Travel Richmond. She has fitted seamlessly into the of-fice and those that have dealt with her already will know what a pleasure she is to deal with.Beckie has spent the last seven years at House of Travel Westport and was the senior consultant there, so she has plenty of expe-rience and knowledge to draw on already, and it has been great to have the op-portunity to learn from her fresh ideas and enthusiasm.Beckie completed her training at NMIT several years ago and has gone on to be a top seller in West-port and the House of Travel group, achieving the personal milestone of the prestigious “customer champ award” for the whole country, in 2009.She has also received the bronze sale awards in 2011 and 2013, which is a great achievement in a company as big as House of Travel. Wakefield Rest Home

Where it’s the care that counts

10 Edward Street, Wakefield Ph 541 8995 email [email protected]

It’s worth the journey

Our warm, sunny and friendly rest home is in the heart of Wakefield Village with a reserve on one side, the health centre on the other and the shops and cafés right at the end of the driveway.

It’s like living at home, not in a hotel.

Respite care and spare beds available.

A charity that gives blokes a “new lease on life” and an op-portunity to use their skills to help the community, is one of the latest entries in the Car Company Charity Drive com-petition.Menzshed Waimea opened al-most three years ago and now has over 200 members who spend time at its headquarters at the A and P Showgrounds at Richmond Park. It is one of the hundreds of Menzsheds around New Zealand and Australia, where the charity started, and Waimea coordina-tor Alan Kissell says for many of the members it has been a saviour. Alan says their members are typically retired tradesmen who have sold their homes and “downsized their sheds”, but still have a lot to contribute to the community. When they join the Menzshed, they become involved in build-ing things for community pro-jects and teaching young men new skills, as well as getting the chance to enjoy some male bonding. “We get a lot of men who have

been sitting around in their re-tirement homes with nothing to do,” Alan says. “When they come here they get a new lease on life - they all have something to offer the community.”Clarrie Merrick, 89, says he moved to Nelson when his wife died, and joined the Menzshed to remain active and meet new friends. The retired engineer and farmer says the Menzshed gives him an opportunity to work on projects that help out the community and allows him to pass on his knowledge to the younger generation.“It keeps me alive and I get the chance to argue with people,” Clarrie says.Alan says Menzshed Waimea is not just about looking after old blokes - it also helps out in-tellectually-disabled men from around the district and one or two younger blokes as well.“Every Tuesday morning we get about 20 blokes from IDEA

services and we have members who help them with various projects. They have a great time here,” Alan says.Member Noel Riley says find-ing the funding to keep the Menzshed operating is a con-stant battle and if they won the Car Company Charity Drive it would allow them to “do so many more projects” for the community. It costs about $10,000 a year to run their Menzshed, which they get from subscriptions and grants. “We are building a new engi-neering shed at the moment so we can teach young kids how to weld and some light engi-neering skills. We always need funding for things like that,” Noel says. The Car Company Charity Drive competition started last year and offers $10,000 to a non-profit group or organi-sation in the Nelson-Tasman region. Groups can enter the competition until August 22 by going to the Car Company’s website carcompanynelson.co.nz or picking up an entry form from any of its car yards.

Christine Cleveland, Jenny North and Kate Radloff investigate their seedlings at the Nelmac

nursery as part of the Go Organic courses run by Agriculture NZ. Based in the Jaycee rooms in

Founders Park, the part time night/day courses explore the latest trends in sustainable farming.

Course leader Jenny North says anyone in the public is welcome to take part in their courses

which are held once a week for the year during term times and school hours. “It’s a great social

time, people are able to learn from each other for their own land projects and can discuss and share

those ideas with the others.” The three courses cover a range of topics including soil manage-

ment, composting, how to manage pests and disease in an organic way, worm farming, crop ro-tation and seasonality to name a few, which can be

applied not only to food crops but to the cultiva-tion of any plants from pastures, shelter belts and

suburban gardens. For more information on the Go Organic courses, free phone 0800 475 455.

“Commitment to our mutual model and a blend of people with experience and expertise ensures NBS continues to stand strong” said General Manager Ken Beams.

NBS has had continued success from our branch network, driving growth of 10% in total assets to $414 million as at 31 March 2014.

Residential, commercial, and agricultural mortgage lending also enjoyed growth of 10%.

A key component of NBS’ strategy has involved managing costs relative to growth and working to both increase productivity levels and make it easier for customers to do business with NBS. The NBS AccessDebit MasterCard® with international access, and the mobile banking application - NBS Mobile, have both been successfully introduced – enabling customers to have more flexibility and control over their banking.

“The financial results have been complimented by NBS’ ongoing commitment to the mutual banking model, by definition we’re here to service our customers and to work with the communities in which we operate” said Chairman Garry Dayman.

Through a combination of grants and sponsorships, the use of the NBS community vehicles, marquees and inflatables – NBS delivered $490,000 in community support for the year, with 241 groups supported across the network.

“Our steadfast, customer-focused ethos, and of course, our mutuality sets NBS apart. This year’s results would not have been possible without the loyalty and support of NBS’ most valuable assets: our customers and staff ” he added.

$490,000 Community Support241 Groups Supported

The Appleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force has re-ceived a huge amount of support from the public in their recent fundraising drive and would like to express how grateful they are to everyone who contributed. Envelopes were delivered around the Appleby community and the response was fantas-tic, as people supported the local rural fire force by donating much-needed funds. Rural delivery con-tractor John Cumpstone, delivered the envelopes for free and both Smartprint and Richmond Office Products supported the cause by printing and sup-plying the envelopes. It was a great joint effort and there are too many people to thank individually, but every bit was greatly appreciated. The fundraising efforts have allowed Appleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force to upgrade their aging radios and continue to serve the community efficiently. Waimea West Horticulture also deserves a big thank you for their generous $3500 donation to the rural fire force. “They are a community activ-ity in the area where we operate, we think they do a fantastic job and we are keen to support them in anything that can make them more efficient,” says Wai-West Horticulture’s Nick Patterson. Being one of the founding members when the rural fire bri-gade started 25 years ago, Nick understands how difficult it can be to find funds, but says their focus has always been the service the rural fire force pro-vides to the local community.

Trael Joass can’t feel his heart beating. Se-vere cramp fills his chest. He undoes his headgear and drops to the ground. He tries to breathe slowly. He rubs a pulse on his neck, a way to soothe the pain. He feels helpless. Then, “tick”, it’s over. He gets back up and plays the rest of the rugby game like it had never happened. The 21 year old Wanderers second-five has had the same heart problem for the past three years, and up until two weeks ago it was manageable, and he could still bust through tackles, smash opposition attack-ers and run with speed, even after experi-encing another “episode”.But before the club rugby final against Waimea Old Boys, Trael’s cardiologist told him five words he never wanted to hear. “No more sport for you.”“I said ‘you’ve got to be kidding me, right?’ I just broke down when I heard that,” Tra-el explains. “I just cried for ages. It’s hard enough to be told I’m not going to be able

to trial for the Makos because this is the closest I’ve ever gotten, but then it’s anoth-er thing not being able to play for my club team in a final. That was the most upset-ting thing for me.”Trael was last week named in the Tasman Makos ‘emerging players squad’ which was effectively a trial team. It’s likely they will pick another midfielder for the ITM Cup squad, and it could have been him. But Trael is now sidelined indefinitely. He can’t play rugby, he can’t hit the gym, he

can’t run, and he can’t do anything that will over-exert his body — not until he gets surgery on his heart. “It could kill me. Death,” he simply answers when asked what would happen if he continues to play the sport he loves, the sport he grew up playing, and the sport he hoped would be his job this year. Trael has supraventricular tachycardia, or “SVT” as he knows it as. It means he has abnormally fast heart rhythm, and it races up to 300 beats per minute. He will need

an operation before being free to take the rugby field again. “It just goes fast. I’ve got more electric pulses than I’m meant to. I was told just to keep playing and if I faint it’d be a sign to stop, but I never fainted.”But it’s still a big unknown as to when he will get that operation. Trael has a friend — another rugby player — who had a sim-ilar condition and waited three years be-fore eventually going private. He is meet-ing with his GP this week, and hopes to have a clearer idea by the end of it. If the wait is too long, he’s considering going pri-vate too.Trael says missing the club rugby final was the hardest part to take, but making a phone call to Tasman Makos coach Kieran Keane and telling him the news was still pretty hard. “It was difficult. It was real difficult. But he was good about it. He gave me posi-tive feedback. KK mentioned to me if that if I do come back and play good rugby this year before ITM Cup is finished then there’s a possibility, but is it worth trying to rush? I’d rather have a good off-season, train and prove myself for next year.”Out of action from sport, Trael says he will now focus on his building apprenticeship.

Sport26 WEDNESDAY 30 July 2014

The Richmond Rabbits will head into this weekend’s Tasman Rug-by League semi-finals unbeaten, but their perfect record will mean nothing if the two-time champions can’t get past the Victory Phoenix Vikings.Richmond Rabbits president Deon Charles says his side will have to be wary of Victory Phoenix Vikings who have been “the success story” of the TRL season so far, reaching their first ever playoff. “We’re defi-nitely expecting a big game against Victory this Saturday. We certainly know we’ve got a tough game and if they saw the way we played on Fri-day night they’ll probably be pretty confident themselves,” he says. The result Deon is talking about is their 38-36 win over Wanderers Wolves, which ended Wanderers’ hopes of reaching the semi-final, but only by the smallest of margins. “The Wolves played a really smart game, they

played the game we wanted to play. Even though we’ve been unbeaten we haven’t been happy with our performances at all, so we know we’re in for a tough af-ternoon on Saturday.”Deon says the team isn’t read-ing too much into their previous results against Victory – which they won comfortably – and he knows the unbeaten record counts for nought if they can’t reach the final. “Being unbeaten means nothing now and all of the players know that. There are no second chances on Saturday. We’ve celebrated that success but

we’re starting fresh now.”Top qualifiers Richmond will take on Victory at Lower Ngawhatu at 2:30pm, with traditional rivals Stoke Cobras and Tahunanui Ti-

gers squaring off for the fourth year in a row at the semi-final stage. Their game is at 1pm.

U18 side a success, despite resultsThe coach of the Waimea College Old Boys Under-18 side says the joint ven-ture from both club and college has been a success, despite some of the re-sults on the field.Waimea College Old Boys are yet to register a win in the Under-18 com-petition, and will play Nelson College 3rd XV at Waimea College at 2pm in a bottom-four playoff this Saturday. But Bruce McLachlan says the team has been a success, and he’s hoping the Tas-man Rugby Union continue to support

it next season. “I think the venture has been a success and it will grow from here, if we have to take a tough year then we will,” says Bruce. With the Waimea College Under-18 side struggling for numbers, Waimea Old Boys decided to help them out, and it’s given school leavers a chance to continue playing the sport against play-ers their own age, instead of forcing them to play division two rugby. Bruce says the team has a “50/50” split of school leavers and secondary school

students, and it’s not just Waimea Col-lege contributing with players. There are also five students from Garin Col-lege taking part. The home games have been split be-tween Jubilee Park and Waimea Col-lege.Waimea Old Boys aren’t the only club to have a formal link with a second-ary school. There is a Stoke-Nayland team in the same grade, while Nelson and Marist have sides in the younger grades.

Cheapskates may be shutting the doors on their Richmond store but this is by no means a sad story for owners Chris and Joey Kirby. With the lease up and a high rent that comes with a shop on the main street, Chris and Joey have decided to combine their investment in the Richmond store with their Nel-son shop which they believe will be a great move, not only for them, but for the customers of Cheapskates. The store has been operating in Richmond for seven years now and Chris says they aren’t giving Richmond up and will return to the town if the time is right. Richmond VIP custom-ers and voucher holders will still be able to use their membership and rewards in the Nelson store. Chris and Joey are enthu-siastic about making Cheapskates in Nelson a destination for their customers and offer-ing them everything they need in the way of street fashion, footwear, caps, sunglasses, skateboards, scooter and accessories. Keep an eye on the changes as they occur in the Nelson store, and keep updated with them on www.facebook.com/cheapskatesnelsonStarting on Wednesday, Cheapskates Rich-

mond will be running their closing down sale and customers will be happy to know they’ll be able to get their hands on the store’s great stock for some pretty sweet deals. This in-

cludes crazy $10 and $20 cloth-ing racks, buy one get one free or 40 per cent off clothing racks, 60%off selected shoes and buy one get one free shoe deals. Even the store fittings are up for grabs with the glass counter already listed on Trademe and offers wel-come on items they don’t want in storage. Everything must go and everyone will be in for a bargain while the sale lasts. Nelson will be offering cus-tomers a bigger range than they

could ever provide from their smaller store in Richmond. Cheapskates isn’t just for skating enthusiasts, they also offer a great selection of street wear and footwear with sort after brands including Nike, Converse, Vans, DC, Havaianas, Adidas, Ilabb, RPM, Volcom, Hur-ley and many more.Definitely don’t miss out on their massive closing down sale from Wednesday 30th July starting at 10am at 217 Queen St, Richmond.

Juliana Los is hoping a four year scholarship in California can help kick start her football career. The 17 year old left Nelson College for Girls last year to at-tend the Asia Pacific Football Academy in Christchurch, and although still young enough to be at secondary school this year, she’s just flown off to join Saint Mary’s College of Cali-fornia.Juliana – who plays central midfield and has been part of the Mainland Pride squad – took up the four year scholar-ship after missing out on a spot in the Junior Football Ferns squad for the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. She hopes training in the pro-fessional environment of a NCAA division 1 college will help her get back in the frame of the national selectors – and

if it doesn’t, she’ll have the edu-cation to fall back on. Juliana made a couple of ap-pearances for Nelson Suburbs while she was back home this month, but she was re-ally looking forward to getting some stronger competition on a regular basis in the US. And while the half Dutch, London-born Juliana “loves her football”, that wasn’t the

sole reason for choosing the US college pathway. “For me for there’s football but then there’s the whole experi-ence, just like meeting new people. I want to become a better player but I’m getting an education out of it too. I guess I just want to broaden my horizons and it’ll make me a more well-rounded person by the end of it.”

Nelson competed at the New Zealand Under 17 Tournament held last week on Auckland’s North Shore.Nelson had a great start to the tournament with a first-up win against East Waikato 43-21.The Nelson girls came out firing, with Abbey Franklin leading the charge in the shooting circle. Strong defensive work through court saw a number of tips con-verted. Makaila Powick was the pivotal link through court while Ariana Tekawa-Wiremu was the hunter outside the circle

edge. Wellington was a skilled team who proved to be too tough in the second game, where they suffocated Nelson’s at-tack at every opportunity. Poppy Restieaux and Shani McLeod-Bennett toiled tireless-ly throughout the 21-43 loss.In their final pool games Nelson lost 21-33 to Kapi Mana and 25-29 to Waitakere 2. The loss to Waitakere was a little disap-pointing as it meant the crossover games were against higher-placed teams.Nelson lost 26-33 to Wanganui, which came down to a couple of crucial turno-

vers. Impressive shooting statistics were returned by Abbey, 21 from 23, while Poppy had the perfect record. The loss put Nelson in the play-off for 25th-32nd. Nel-son bounced back with an impressive 42-24 win over Pukekohe. All three shooters averaged over 80 per cent, while Shani and Poppy were a formidable defensive duo where they had good body position for rebounds and pulled in a number of well-timed intercepts. Makaila again had a high work rate at centre. The game against Eastern Bay of Plenty

went goal for goal throughout, with nei-ther team able to dominate. A crucial turnover in the final quarter was enough for the northern team to get their noses in front to record a 31-27 win, despite an-other strong defensive effort by Shani and Poppy. Nelson were competitive against Waitakere 2, until the final quarter when they were defeated 24-40.Nelson were placed 28th out of the 40 teams, the same placing as last year, how-ever there were another seven teams com-peting this year.
