What is the WCCS?O Created during WWI for soldiers,
sailors, and communities O Main Focus: Provide leisure and
recreational opportunities for people, mainly soldiers and sailors, during the war
O Needed for social needs of the soldiers and to keep them emotionally sane
O Soldiers away from family, friends, and customary recreation
O It was believed that the boosting of morale through recreational activities was the reason for winning the war
O Became “Playground and Recreation Association of America”
How Has it Contributed to Leisure/ Recreation?
O Playground and Recreation Association of America united with the WCCS to provide leaders for the recreational activities
O The PRAA developed the National Physical Education Service as wellO This created teaching for recreation and emphasized
physical educationO The WCCS and it’s counterparts such as the NPES and
PRAA provided boosted morale and stress relief for servicemen.
O It built a foundation for many of the recreational programs that we have in today’s society, and shows us how essential leisure and recreation is to our lives.
