Inspired by the antique Mazandaran kilims of Iran, Warp & Weft’s collection of fine flatwoven rugs are made in the same tradition with hand-spun, naturally dyed wool.Like the Mazanadaran kilims, which anticipated a strikingly modern Minimalist designsensibility, our flatweaves are produced in narrow panels on small village looms. They are then joined together to produce deceptively simple yet complex and sophisticated compositions that utilize bold, graphic contrasts alongside color effectsof the greatest subtlety. Even the areas with sharp contrasts have within them delicategradations of color or ‘abrash’ that impart a sense of space or depth to the surface ofthe design. In other areas this subtle technique is used to allow contrasting color areasto merge or interpenetrate one another down to the individual lines of the weaving,giving the design a fluid, kinetic quality that makes it come alive before our eyes. These subtle effects of color are matched by the delicate changes in the woven texture, effects that can only be appreciated firsthand. Our kilims make a stunning addition to any sophisticated modern interior.
