Warren Benjamin President, Mackay West Rotary Grace PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: For my newsletter, this week please refer to Bruce Howletts E-mail titled Community Service. I do not think I can say any more about last weeks events, except for thanking Bruce on the tremendous effort he put into organizing the Charity Wine Dinner night and still find time to support the RYDA program. Thanks also Ian Cruickshank for your efforts assisting with the Wine Charity Night, and along with Geoff Morgan and Brian Dean for attending RYDA also. The Charity Wine Dinner Night certainly was a success and that was expressed by most of the participants. So, I am sure it will be on our Rotary Calendar for next year. I had a Group 1 meeting last Friday with our assistant DG Bente, and the focus was on R100 the Baton relay and we were reminded to not drop the Batton and stop preparing for the event. Its only just over 3 months to go before the event and being close to Christmas it will be January before we know it. Todd and Ross are well into organizing our contribution to R100 with the Bike Ride from Sarina to Waverly Creek. Sarina Club is getting involved with their BBQ trailer and have indicated they would like to do the BBQ lunch at Waverly Ck. So, our club will be responsible for Organizing and Managing the pit stops along the way, as well a welcoming coffee at Sarina before the commencement of the Ride. Remember this week meeting is Tuesday Night at 6:30 for 7 pm start, Grant Craig is Guest Speaker with Eric Barry as Chairman. The week after is as usually and Jannik Olejas, CEO of Mackay Sugar will be Guest Speaker and John Deguara will be Chairman for the night. Do not forget to invite prospective member along that night. The Len Hansen Bursary is coming up and thanks to Geoff Morgan who has stepped up to review the studentssubmissions and decide on a winner. Geoff has kindly volunteered to represent our club by presenting the awards at the schools speech night in December. Thanks, Ian Ritchie, for organizing the sausage Sizzle at the Family Day for Domestic Violence Prevention at Queens Park on the 21 November from 10am to 2pm. Ian has advised he now has enough helpers. Rotary Opens Opportunities President Warren Holger Knaack President, Rotary Internaonal “We break the bread of brotherhood. Mackay West Rotary Charity Wine Dinner

What a wonderful event. On Friday night, fifteen Club members along with their partners were privileged to attend the inaugural Rotary Charity Dinner at the Harrup Park Country Club to raise funds for Samaritan House, Mackay’s refuge for women and children. In all, there were one hundred and one attendees.

Conducting the event outside under the stars provided a most enjoyable atmosphere along with the singing and music from Emily Kirkwood. The decor was most tasteful and the five course meal of high quality. The meal was thoroughly enjoyed along with four excellent wines chosen and provided by Michele and

Treasury Wines. The evening was compared by Rob Kidd from 4MK who performed admirably and kept the evening rolling.

When it came to the raffle and wine auction the generosity of people was overwhelming. There were twelve prizes in the raffle valued at $2900 with the first prize being a bottle of Grange valued at $810. This was won by the almost non wine drinker,

Garry Dobbie. Some twenty bottles of wine were auctioned. Auctioneer, Peter McFarlane conducted an enthusiastic auction, with a great crowd response and was ably assisted by spotters Todd Shannon and Ross Comben.

The evening was planned as a fund raiser for Samaritan House and we were pleased to welcome four ladies to represent that organization. It will takes a little while to determine, but the amount raised will be several thousand dollars.

Congratulations must go to Adrian and Vernon from the Harrup Country Club for organizing, sponsoring and conducting such a professional and enjoyable event and also Michele from Treasury Wines for choosing and providing enjoyable wines with the meal and for the

auction.

The event was organised by Bruce Howlett, assisted by Ian Cruickshank. Our thanks to the following willing sponsors Harrup Park Country Club; Treasury Wines; The Railway Hotel, Marian; Porters Mitre 10; Fresco’s Meats; Escape Room; The Big 4 Airlie Beach and Great Northern.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION

Rotary Investments

Investments are critical to the sustainability of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.

The Office of Investment is responsible for managing Rotary’s investments according to policies set by The Rotary Foundation’s Trustees and Rotary International’s Board of Directors. Through a commitment to stewardship and excellence, we seek to establish a legacy that distinguishes Rotary as a prudent investor, supports Rotary's objectives, and promotes sustainability.

Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is the primary source of funds that support The Rotary Foundation’s programs and areas of focus. Contributions to the Annual Fund are invested for three years to generate earnings to meet the Foundation’s operating expenses. To achieve the objective of the Annual Fund, the portfolio is invested conservatively with an emphasis on liquidity and income over capital appreciation. The Annual Fund portfolio is 100 percent invested in fixed income assets. The Annual Fund earned 2.8 percent in fiscal 2019. Over the past five years, the Annual Fund generated an average rate of return of 3.2 percent and grew from $421 million to $433 million. The rate of return is the total realized and unrealized capital gains, and interest and dividend income.
