The San Jose State Universitywomen’s water polo team has high expec-tations in 2006. They’re looking toimprove upon a 2005 season in whichthey finished with an 11-19 overall recordand a 12th place finish at the MountainPacific Sports Federation Championships.

“We expect to perform well national-ly and be in the top-10 ,” head coach LouTully says about his team that returns itstwo goalkeepers and seven other letter-winners from last season.

GOALKEEPERS

Senior co-captain Krissy Hansell andsophomore Kendra Adama will split timein the net. Freshman Kelly Kennison isthe team’s third goalkeeper.

“Krissy has a fantastic work ethic,”says goalkeeper coach Fana Fuqua. “Shehas the respect of her teammates and is aleader in and out of the water.”

Adama saw considerable action as afreshman in 2005 and is expected to beone of the Spartans’ strongest players.

“With her age and experience, she’sshowing that she’s capable of being one ofthe strongest goalkeepers in the MPSF,”Fuqua says. “She and Krissy push eachother to be better.”

ATTACKERS

Junior Angela Riddle tops the team’sattackers. Tully says that she is one of theteam’s fastest players and “is very cre-ative and intense.”

Alexis Higlett, who has played com-petitively in Australia, New Zealand,Canada and the United States, joins theSpartans.

“Lex is also very creative and has agreat understanding of the game,” saysthe Spartans’ head coach. “She’s a greatcounter-attacker as well.”

Freshman Julia Moruza, junior col-lege transfer Brooke Eisner, and seniorJennie Darling are three more attackersseeking playing time this season. Moruzahas good speed and strength. Eisner wasimpressive in preseason practice.

Junior college transfers JessieOshann and Elise Schuetz begin the sea-son as redshirt candidates.

2-METER PLAYERS

Co-captain Beth Harberts, a junior,and sophomore Sarah Hovland top the

list of 2-meter players. Along with fresh-man Juliet Moss, they all have good sizeand speed.

“Beth is a very strong outside shoot-er,” says Tully. “She’s ready to play andmake things happen on this team.”

DEFENDERS

Katie Morgan is expected to be oneof the team’s defensive leader.

“Katie is a good outside shooter andshe’s been a standout for us all three ofher years here,” Tully says about histhree-time letterwinner who begins theseason with 93 career goals.

Junior college transfer Sara Natalizio,left-handed sophomore Kelly Pearce andtransfer Brianna Lindsey are two moregood shooters and good swimmers whoare expected to earn significant playingtime.

UTILITY PLAYERS

Redshirt junior Rachel Rhodes isexpected to be one of team’s top all-around players.

“Rachel is good at several positionsand has been one of our top performersthroughout her first two seasons,” theSpartans’ coach says. Left-handed fresh-man Tanya Torres is another of theSpartans’ best utility players.

“Tanya’s got a great work ethic andshe’s showing that she’s ready to be a starhere,” describes Tully. “She’s extremelystrong in the weight room and that carriesover to her performance in the pool.”

Sophomore transfer GeraldineHazlett, redshirt freshman TarinGambello, and freshman Annmarie Scottround out the team’s utility players.

Hazlett practiced well during the presea-son workouts and is getting stronger.Gambello is another Spartan with astrong outside shot.

CONFERENCE OUTLOOK

Tully expects 2005’s top four teams,UCLA, USC, Stanford and Hawai’i to bethe frontrunners again in 2006. Early-sea-son tournament competitions at Stanford,February 11-12, and at UC Santa Barbara,February 25-26, will let the Spartansknow quickly where they stand on anational level.

“Our performance at the SantaBarbara Tournament will give us a goodindication of where we are and howwe’re doing as a team,” Tully says.

Coaching Staff

Lou TullyHead Coach10th Season

LouTully is in his tenth season as San Jose State University’swomen’s water polo head coach. As the only coach of theSpartans, he has taken a program from infancy and developed anational-caliber team that finishes regularly in the top-20 of thefinal national poll. Four times in the last eight seasons, San JoseState has produced a .500 or better win-loss record. Tully has amajor college coaching record of 136-152 in his first nine seasons

at the Spartans’ helm. SanJose State players haveearned All-Americanrecognition eight timesunder his leadership.

Successful at the highschool, community collegeand club levels, he joinedSan Jose State in 1996 aftercoaching the boys and girlsteams at Leland HighSchool in San Jose.

Tully began his coach-ing career in 1966 at MenloJunior College where hecoached water polo andswimming. He spent 11years coaching at variouslocal high schools includ-ing a league championshipat Mt. Pleasant HighSchool in 1977 and at

Leland High School in 1997. Tully has coached high school All-Americans including Mike Castaneda, Steve Lynn, NormanVillanueva, Tres Threatt and Brent Vanderkam.

In addition to coaching the Spartans, Tully has overseenand coached the San Jose Splash for 12 years, a club team forlocal junior women’s players that he started.

A long-time water polo official, Tully has officiated at everylevel including the Junior Olympic Nationals, U. S. Senior Men’sand Women’s National Championships, community collegestate championships and NCAA Division I men’s and women’smatches. Tully currently serves on the board of the PeninsulaReferees Association.

The 1967 San Jose State graduate majored in physical edu-cation and played four seasons of collegiate water polo. Hewent on to earn his master’s degree in physical education fromSan Jose State in 1972. Tully also holds a California Life TeachingCredential. He and his wife, Susan, have two adult children,Megan and Ian. The Tullys reside in San Jose.

Fana FuquaAssistant Coach

1st Season

Fana Fuqua, a member of the United States women's waterpolo national team, is in her first year as the assistant women’swater polo coach at San Jose State. She will concentrate oncoaching the team's defense and oversee recruiting.

“Fana brings a tremendous wealth of experience bothnationally and internationally to the Spartan water polo pro-gram,” says head coach Lou Tully. “She is incredibly focusedand her work ethic will provide a fabulous role model for every-one associated with our program.”

Fuqua was an all-star goalkeeper for the 1998 through 2001University of California water polo teams. She helped theGolden Bears to Final Four appearances in four straight seasons.California was second in 1998 and 1999 and fourth in 2000 and2001. Fuqua was named the Mountain Pacific SportsFederation's "Goalie of the Year" in 2000 and her team's "MostValuable Player" in 2000 and 2001.

The 2001 University of California graduate majored in earlychildhood development. A member of the U.S. national teamsince 2000, she played overseas from 2002 through 2005 for theUniversity of New South Wales team in Australia.

"I played against Lou [Tully] at Cal and I've admired histeams and their professionalism," says Fuqua, a Menlo Park,Calif., native who founded the Atherton (Calif.) High Schoolwomen’s water polo program. "It was never an easy game whenwe played them. I'm really excited for the opportunity to makethis program better.”

Doug RobinsonVolunteer Assistant

7th Season

Doug Robinson is in his seventh season as the Spartans’volunteer assistant. He has coached high school water polo atseveral area schools and is in his 17th year as a middle schoolalternative schools teacher for the Santa Clara Country Office ofEducation. He played water polo at Live Oak High School inMorgan Hill, Calif. and continues to compete as member of theBay Area Masters’ Water Polo Club. The 1988 graduate of CalPoly resides in Campbell.

Tom BowenDirector of Athletics

Tom Bowen was named San JoseState University's director of intercol-legiate athletics on December 20,2004. His leadership positions at theprofessional, collegiate and highschool levels have prepared him toeffectively deal with the complexi-ties, intricacies and nuances of man-aging and operating a NCAADivision I-A program.

In his first year leading theSpartans, Bowen has overhauled the

department's infrastructure, invested resources both in externaland internal operations, initiated an enhanced website presence,appointed new head coaches in football, men's basketball, men'sgolf and women's golf and named interim head coach inwomen's swimming and diving. Under his watch, the SpartanFoundation, the department's fund-raising component, had itsmost-successful annual drive in many years raising $1.1-million.For the first time in two decades, San Jose State University athletics has a local play-by-play broadcast packagefor Spartan football and basketball.

As an integral member of the University's presidential staff, hehas created new short and long-term revenue streams for inter-collegiate athletics and many other campus extra-curricular activ-ities. His initiatives and leadership have created new energydepartment -wide and throughout the university. His vision forstudent-athlete success and excellence led to the creation of aStudent Success Services component. Above all, his goal for SanJose State University athletics is building a "Culture ofChampions" academically, in the fields of competition and in thecommunity.

Bowen came to San Jose State after serving three years as thedirector of community affairs and the executive director of the49ers Foundation for the San Francisco 49ers of the NationalFootball League. He directed all of the team's fund-raising activi-ties and was responsible for alumni and current player participa-

tion in the community. San Francisco was the first NFL franchiseto implement an annual giving program.

As an assistant and associate director of athletics at theUniversity of California from July 2000 through September 2002,he was responsible for all athletic fundraising. Bowen was credit-ed with developing the first comprehensive planned giving program for the GoldenBears.

At Saint Mary's College, he was the Director of Foundationsand Corporate Relations from May 1995 to January 1997 beforebeing appointed an associate director of athletics position by thepresident of the college. His grant proposal acumen helped raise$6.1-million in academic funding for the institution. FromJanuary 1997 through April 2000, he managed the athleticsdepartment's budget, directed a corporate sponsorship programand interacted with the academic senate, faculty and universitypersonnel on student-athlete issues.

The 1983 graduate of the University of Notre Dame playedhigh school football at Moreau High in Hayward, Calif. Hemajored in theology/sociology and spent six years studying forthe priesthood with the Holy Cross Fathers. Bowen went on toearn a master's degree in administration/education from theUniversity of San Francisco in 1990.

His first professional leadership appointment in athletics wasat De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. From 1987 through1995, he held the positions of assistant football coach and athlet-ics director. He is a Level 2 certified member of the CollegeAthletic Business Management Association (CABMA), theNational Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics(NACDA), the National Society of Fund Raising Executives andan associate member of the Indiana University School ofPhilanthropy.

Bowen currently is an adjunct professor at the University ofSan Francisco School of Sports Management. He has been a guestlecturer at several Bay Area university campuses.

The Denver, Colo., native was born on May 27, 1961. He andhis wife, Mia, are the parents of three children. In 2006, Andrewwill be eight-years-old; Peter, four; and, daughter, McKenna,three.

Don W. KassingPresident

Don W. Kassing was appointedpresident of San José StateUniversity in May 2005, after servingeight months as interim president.He will serve as the permanent pres-ident until 2007, when a search willbe undertaken for his successor.

Kassing had served San José Stateas vice president for administrationand finance and chief financial offi-cer since November 1993. As vicepresident for administration and

finance, he was responsible for six major administrative units oncampus: Administrative Systems and Finance, FacilitiesDevelopment and operations, Human Resources, UniversityPolice Department, University Computing andTelecommunications and Spartan Shops, Inc. As Chief FinancialOfficer, he had overall responsibility for all business and finan-cial affairs of the campus. He is responsible for the financing andconstruction of the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library andthe Campus Village Project (student and faculty housing). Heserved as Treasurer of the University Foundation and providedadministrative oversight to all auxiliaries.

Kassing's 25 years experience in higher education includesservice as:* Vice President for University Relations and AdministrativeServices - Murray State University (Kentucky)* Vice President for Development and Public Affairs - WesternState College of ColoradoFrom 1975 to 1986 he served at Belleville Area College, inBelleville, Illinois, where he taught management and marketing,served as department chair, and for two years was president ofthe Granite City Campus. Before that, he worked for 11 years inprivate industry, including eight years in corporate finance andoperations management for Brown Group Inc. and three yearswith General Motors Corporation.

In its July 2005 issue, San Jose magazine named him to its"Power 100" - an annual list of the most influential people inSilicon Valley.

Kassing holds a master's degree in business administrationand a B.S. in economics from St. Louis University. He is marriedwith three children and five grandchildren.

San Jose State University Women’s Water Polo

The Student Success Services personnel, the Scott Gadway Academic Centerand the football offices are in the Simpkins Stadium Center, which is located

between Spartan Stadium and the Koret Athletic Training Center.

The 10,000 square-foot Koret Athletic Training Center is a state-of-the-art facility that also contains a rehabilitation and training room and theJeff Garcia Hall of Champions.

The Aquatics Center, opened in May 1988, is home to San Jose StateUniversity water polo matches and swimming and diving meets.

The pool is one of the largest ever constructed in California.Dimensions are 200-feet long and 75-feet wide. Two movable bulk-heads divide the pool into diving, lap swimming and recreational

swimming areas.
