MARY CHASE, Playwright

Mary Chase (February 25, 1906 – October 20, 1981) began her professional life as a journalist, but her life’s path soon reoriented towards her true love — the theater. Her first play Me Third was produced in 1936 at Denver’s Baker Federal Theater as a part of the Roosevelt-era Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1938, Mary wrote Chi House, which was adapted for film by Hollywood’s RKO Radio Pictures and renamed Sorority House. During the early 1940s she started work on the play that would become Harvey. The script proved challenging and underwent numerous revisions, taking two years to finish. On November 1, 1944, it opened on Broadway and quickly became a smash hit, running for four and a half years from Nov. 1, 1944 to Jan. 15, 1949 for a total of 1,775 performances. Harvey is the 35th longest-running show in modern Broadway history and the 6th longest-running play. In 1945, Mary Chase was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Harvey. Over her long career, Ms. Chase wrote 14 plays, 2 children’s books, and 3 film adaptations including the screenplay for her beloved hit play Harvey.

Dick also teaches clowning worldwide and to theater students at the University of North Texas. Directing credits include Dallas Children’s Theatre (Balloonacy, Blue), Of Thee I Sing at Lyric Stage, and the Shanghai International Comedy Festival. Prior to all of this, Dick was the Director of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s Clown College. His passion is healthcare clowning at Laughterleague.org.

We gratefully acknowledge the 500+ donors who each year, through their contributions, make it possible for WTT to present over 125 performances each year. Although space limits our ability to publicly recognize donors at levels below $250, we deeply and sincerely appreciate every contribution. As ticket sales cover only a portion of our annual costs, these generous gifts of patrons, corporations, foundations and others are critical to WTT’s ability to create quality professional theatre for our audience. Should you wish to be added to this extraordinary list of donors, please visit our website at www.watertowertheatre.org/donations or contact Delynda Moravec at 972-450-6230 or via email at [email protected].
