You are a “member” of one of the most elite and important “teams” in the State of Louisiana, “The Criminal Justice System,” and that “team” relies on each of you “performing” to the best of your ability to be successful!  As the old saying goes – a team is only as strong as its weakest player!  This is your ticket to join your fellow “teammates” in New Orleans at the LDAA 36th Annual Support Staff Training Conference!   Remember… “We are the Champions, my friends; and, we’ll keep on fighting till the end; ’Cause we are the champions, we are the champions… of the Criminal Justice System!” 

 This year's conference is scheduled for April 14 – 16, 2010, at the Marriott New Orleans at the Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, and will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, and adjourn at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, April 16.  As always, casual attire is the dress code for this Conference.  As well as providing an exceptional faculty, the Conference will provide a forum for support staff to discuss problems and solutions that may exist in District Attorneys' offices throughout the State.  The program is designed to reinforce the healthy, productive attitude necessary to function in today's complex business and social arenas.  Attendees are encouraged to take advantage of the social opportunities at the Conference, as well as those which the City of New Orleans has to offer.  Mark your calendars... and we'll see you in New Orleans!  This year’s program is a collaborative effort by the LDAA Support Staff Training Committee members.  The 2009‐2010 committee members are: Mitzie Adams (1st J.D.), Peggy Alleman (23rd J.D.), Annie Rose Bickham (22nd J.D.), Ruth Branch (22nd J.D.), Nadine Brou (15th J.D.), Jason Casso (23rd J.D.), Mary Fitzgerald (27th J.D.), Vickie Kiffe (14th J.D.),  Rosalind Knighten (21st J.D.), Amanda LaFleur (15th J.D.), Frances Richard (14th J.D.), Michelle Robinson (17th J.D.), and Lorraine Starr (1st J.D.).   

REGISTRATION  Registration is open to all secretaries, paralegals, and other support staff in District Attorneys' offices, and to interested individuals working in the various areas of the criminal justice system, at a fee of $100 per person.  This fee includes all training sessions, handouts, coffee breaks, and scheduled activities.  You have three ways to register: 1) register on line at WWW.LDAA.ORG; 2) fax the registration form to LDAA Headquarters at (225) 387‐0237; or 3) return the enclosed registration form to LDAA Headquarters at 1645 Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802‐8143.  Payment may be made at a later date PRIOR TO OR AT the conference.  Checks, cash and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) may be used for payment of registration fees.  Please make checks payable to the Louisiana District Attorneys Association (LDAA).    

Refund policy:  If LDAA Headquarters is notified by Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in writing or by telephone, a full refund will be made.  After this cutoff date, there will be no refunds.  NO SHOWS WILL BE BILLED.  Transfers of registrations will be granted until Wednesday, April 7, 2010.  After that date, no transfers of registrations will be available.  ACCOMMODATIONS  The Association has obtained a special rate of $101 for single, double, triple, or quad occupancy (includes complimentary continental breakfast) and $15.50 per night parking at the host hotel, the Marriott New Orleans at the Convention Center located at 859 Convention Center Boulevard in New Orleans.  To make reservations, simply contact the hotel's registration desk directly at (504) 613‐2888.  Be sure to identify yourself as an attendee of the LDAA Conference to obtain the correct rate.  NOTE: All reservations must be guaranteed with a major credit card and must be made no later than TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2010, as the room block will be released to the general public on that date.  If you need to cancel a room, please note that the cancellation policy states that the hotel must be notified at least 72 hours prior to arrival to avoid a penalty.

 2:15‐2:30    BREAK  2:30‐4:00    CPR 101       Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a combination of rescue breathing and 

chest compressions delivered to victims thought to be in cardiac arrest.  Almost 80% of out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrests occur at home and are witnessed by a family member.  Only 6.4% of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive because the vast majority of those witnessing the arrest are people who do not know how to perform CPR.  This presentation will cover adult and pediatric CPR and first aid.  You won’t want to miss this informative presentation – what you learn could save someone’s life!

9:00‐ 10:00    THE ROLE OF THE CORONER’S OFFICE IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM For more than 17 years, Dr. Thoma has taught emergency medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.  In 2008, Dr. Thoma put on a “new hat” when he was elected and sworn in as Caddo Parish Coroner where some of his duties include investigating deaths, investigating and collecting evidence on sexual assault cases, issuing emergency certificates and/or orders of protective custody on those who are a danger to self or others, or gravely disabled.  In this session, Dr. Thoma will talk about some of those duties, and how his role as Coroner fits into the criminal justice system.

10:15‐11:15      DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (Domestic violence continues to be a serious problem in our state.  Louisiana is ranked first in the nation in the rate of women killed by men [2.53 per 100,000] according to the Violence Policy Center.  The Louisiana Protective Order Registry reported 21,592 orders entered into the registry January 1‐December 31, 2009.  ADA Brent Hawkins will share his champion DV cases he has prosecuted in the 14th Judicial District.)

FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 2010  8:00‐12:30    REGISTRATION  8:00‐9:30      “THE GAME“‐ A LOOK INTO THE UNDERWORLD OF PROSTITUTION 

(Prostitution can also be considered a form of human trafficking.  The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) define a human trafficking victim as “a person induced to perform labor or a commercial sex act through force, fraud, or coercion.  Any person under age 18 who performs a commercial sex act is considered a victim of human trafficking, regardless of whether force, fraud, or coercion was present.”  In this presentation, Sergeant Hare explains “The Game” terminology, characteristics of the prostitute and pimp, and how “The Game” can be seen and heard in our everyday life.  Sergeant Hare will also talk about two cases his agency is currently investigating under Louisiana’s newly enacted law, R.S. 14:46.3, Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes.  (NOTE: Due to the nature of this presentation, this session may contain language and material which some attendees may find offensive.)

This presentation explains the potential perils of web surfing, instant messaging and other modern communications tools used by children, teenagers and even adults.   It will outline the danger signs parents should be on the alert for, and reviews the steps they can take to safeguard themselves and their children.
