Escape to FreedomIntroduction

Initiating Incident

Rising Actions

Being much afflicted with sickness these few days past, I have been unable to write, but thanks be to God, now I feel better. Having contemplated with astonishment our great deliverance, I cast my eyes around to view the country as I passed along, and never did I behold such a delightful view as I had on both sides.James WilsonRising ActionsFountain HughesWe didn't know nothing. Didn't allow you to look at no book. And then there was some free born colored people, why they had a little education, but there was very few of them, where we was.Now I couldn't go from here across the street, or I couldn't go through nobody's house without I have a note, or something from my master. And if I had that pass, that was what we call a pass, if I had that pass, I could go wherever he sent me.We had no home, you know. We was just turned out like a lot of cattle. You know how they turn cattle out in a pasture? Well after freedom, you know, colored people didn't have nothing. Colored people didn't have no beds when they was slaves. We always slept on the floor.Climax

Falling ActionsBen BlackburnThomas JonesThe colored people are doing very well. They are poor, some of them, but are all able to have enough to eat and wear, and they have comfortable homes, with few exceptions, and some of these are in a way to have them. Some few dont seem to care whether they have good houses or not, as is the case among all people.I got here last Tuesday evening, and spent the Fourth of July in Canada. I felt as big and free as any man could feel, and I worked part of the day for my own benefit. Conclusion
