General Information on Proficiencies1.1AcquiringProficienciesEvennewlycreated,1stlevelcharactershaveproficiencies.Hisgroup,asshowninTable11determinesthenumberofproficiencyslotsthatacharacterstartswith.Eachproficiencyslotisemptyuntiltheplayerfillsitbyselectingaproficiencyskill.IfyourDMallowsnonweaponproficiencies,thecharactersIntelligencescorecanmodifythenumberofslotshehas,grantinghimmoreproficiencies:acharactercanusetheLanguagesbonusesona1for1basistogetextraproficiencies.ForexampleRathhasanIntelligenceof11meaninghecanlearnupto2extralanguagesinadditiontoCommon.Rathcanchoosetoknow2morelanguagesrightaway,hecanusethose2languageslotsas2extranonweaponproficiencies,orfinallyhecansavethose2extraproficiencyslotsforlateruse.ThischoiceiscompletelyuptotheRathsplayer.SpecialNote:Fighters(bothsingleandmulticlassed)canusehalfofthesebonusslots(roundeddown,minimumof1)asweaponproficiencies,andtheotherhalfasnonweaponproficiencies.Allotherclassescanonlyusethesebonusesonnonweaponproficiencies!Theplayermustassignweaponornonweaponproficienciestoalloftheseslotsbeforethecharactergoesonhisfirstadventure(thisdoesnotincludethebonusslotsfromIntelligence,thesemaybesavedaspertheabove).Theserepresentwhatthecharacterhaslearnedbeforebeginninghisadventuringcareer.Thereafter,asthecharacteradvancesinexperiencelevels,hegainsadditionalproficiencyslots.Therateatwhichhegainsthemdependsonthegrouphebelongsto.Table11belowlistshowmanyweaponandnonweaponproficiencyslotsthecharacterstartswith;andhowmanylevelsthecharactermustgainbeforeheearnsanotherslot.Initialisthenumberofproficiencyslotsreceivedbycharactersofthatgroupat1stlevel.#Levelsshowshowmanylevelsthecharacterneedstogainanadditionalproficiencyslot.Anewproficiencyslotisgainedateveryexperiencelevelthatisevenlydivisiblebythenumberlisted.Forexample:RaththeFighterstartswith4andgainsoneweaponproficiencysloteverythreelevels.Raththengetsonenewslotat3rdlevel,anotherat6th,anotherat9th,andsoon(NotethatRathalsogainsonenonweaponproficiencyat3rd,6th,9th,etc.perTable11below).Penaltyisthemodifiertothecharactersattackrollswhenhefightsusingaweaponheisnotproficientwith.Forexample:Rath,adwarf,chosetobeproficientwiththewarhammerwhenhestartedadventuring.Findinghimselfinadesperatesituationoneday,hemustuseaflaileventhoughheisnotproficientwithit.Usingtheweaponawkwardly,hehasa2penaltytohischancetohitwiththeweapon.Notethatweapondamageisnotaffectedbythispenaltyinanyway.

    1.2TrainingLikeallskillsandabilities,proficienciesdonotleapunbiddenandfullyrealizedintoacharactersmind.Instead,acharactermusttrain,study,andpracticetolearnanewproficiencyafterhischaracterhasstartedadventuring.However,roleplayingthetrainingtimeneededtolearnanewskillisnotmuchfun.Thustherearenoextensivetrainingtimesorstudyperiodsassociatedwithmostproficiencies.Whenacharacterchoosestolearnanewproficiency,itisassumedhedbeenstudyingitinhissparetimeandhasthegistofit.Considerjusthowmuchsparetimethecharacterhas.Theplayerisnotroleplayingeverysecondofhischaracterslife.Theplayermaydecidetohavehischaracterspendanightintownbeforesettingoutonthelongjourneythenextday.Perhapsthecharactermustwaitaroundforseveraldayswhilehiscompanionshealfromthelastadventure.Theymightspendweeksonanuneventfuloceanvoyage.Whatishedoingduringthattime?Amongotherthings,heisstudyingwhatevernewproficiencieshewilleventuallylearn.Usingthisdowntimetohandletheunexcitingaspectsofaroleplayingcampaignletsplayersconcentrateonmoreimportant(ormoreinteresting)matters.Anotherpartoftrainingisfindingateachertolearnthefinerdetailsoftheproficiencyinquestion.TheDMcanhandlethisinseveralways.Forthosewholikesimplicityignoretheneedforteachersthereareselftaughtpeopleeverywhereintheworld.Forthosewhowantmorecomplexity,maketheplayercharactersfindsomeonetoteachthemanynewproficiencytheywanttolearn.Thiscanbe

  • anotherplayercharacteroranNPC.Althoughthisaddsrealism,ittendstolimitthePCsadventuringoptions,especiallyifheisrequiredtostayinregularcontactwithhisinstructor.Furthermore,mostteacherswantpayment.Whileabarterarrangementmightbereached,thenormalpaymentiscash.Theactualcostoftheservicedependsonthenatureoftheskill,theamountoftrainingdesired,theavailabilityoftutors,thegreedoftheinstructor,andthedesireoftheDMtoremoveexcesscashfromhiscampaign.Aquickandsimplewaytohandlelearningnewproficienciesistoassumeamonthofexperttutelageperproficiencyslotusedtobuytheproficiencyitself.Forexample,ifHalictheWizardwantstolearnAlchemy1,hemustbetaughtfor3monthsbyanAlchemyexpertasitcosts2proficiencyslotstoacquire.(Thisinadditiontotheassumptionthatalotofhisfreetimehasbeenandwillbespentstudyingthesubject)

Weapon Proficiencies & Specialization 2.1GeneralInformationKnowinghowtouseaweaponwithoutembarrassingyourselfisverydifferentfrombeingamasterofthatweapon.IntheAD&Dgame,partofyourcharactersskillisreflectedinthebonusesheearnsashereacheshigherlevels.Asyourcharacteradvances,hebecomesawiserandmoredangerousfighter.Experiencehastaughthimtoanticipatehisopponentsandtopounceonanyadvantagethatpresentsitself.Butthisisageneral,overallimprovement,broughtaboutbythewarriorssharpeningsensesandtiming.Itappliesequallytoalltypesoffighting.Weaponspecializationisanoptionalrulethatenablesasingleormulticlassfightertochooseasingleweaponandspecializeinitsuse.Anyweaponmaybechosen.Specializationisnormallyannounced(andpaidforwithweaponproficiencyslots)whenthecharacteriscreated.Butevenafteraplayercharacterearnsexperience,hecanstillchoosetospecializeinotherweaponsprovidedhehastheweaponproficiencyslotsavailable;orhemaychoosetoincreasehisknowledgeinhischosenweaponandbecomeaMasterorevenGrandMaster.Thespecializationrequiresasinglemindeddedicationandtraining.Thusmulticlassfightercharacters,RangersorPaladinscannotattainarankhigherthanSpecialized;higherranksareonlyavailablesingleclassfighters.2.2CostofSpecializationWeaponspecializationisobtainedbydevotingextraweaponproficiencyslotstothechosenweapon.Tospecializeinanysortofmeleeweaponorcrossbow,thecharactermustdevotetwoslots:oneslottobecomeproficientwithit,andthenasecondslottospecializeinit.Anybow(otherthanacrossbow)requiresatotalofthreeproficiencyslots:oneforproficiencyandtwotospecialize.Assume,forthemoment,thatRaththedwarfdecidedtospecializewiththewarhammer.Twoofhisfourproficiencyslotsarethusdevotedtothewarhammer.Withthetworemaininghecanbecomeproficientwiththeshortswordandshortbow(forexample).2.3EffectsofSpecializationWhenacharacterspecializeswithameleeweapon,hegainsbonuseswithallattackanddamagerollswiththatweaponbasedonhowmuchspecializationthatcharacterhaswithaparticularweapon.Theattackbonusesarenotmagicalanddonotenablethecharactertoaffectacreaturethatcanbeinjuredonlybymagicalweapons.Bowandcrossbowspecialistsgainanadditionalrangecategory:pointblank.Pointblankrangeforbowsandcrossbowsisfromoneto5feet.Atpointblankrange,thecharactergainsnospecificattackordamagebonuses;howevertheydonotsufferthepointblankshotpenaltyof5.Furthermore,ifthecharacterhasanarrowknockedanddrawn(oraboltloadedandcockedifusingacrossbow),andhashistargetinsight,hecanfireatthebeginningoftheroundbeforeanyinitiativerollsaremade.BonusattacksforspecialistsarelistedonTable12.Theuseofthistab
