A note from Sue... You’ll be reading this with only about two weeks to go till the big day! I do hope you are all shopped out, but for those who still have some last minute gift buying then why not use our three pages of inspirational gift ideas from local shops close by!

How was 2014 for you? I think I’ve had a pretty marvellous year. It started in January with the planning of our big trip to Australia to visit my cousin and some friends I met in ‘88! February I was off to my very first West Coast Swing Championships - spectating I hasten to add - very inspirational. In March I put on a stone in weight! In April I found the solution to lose weight and the big diet started. In May I was off dancing again in Skipton in North Yorkshire, beautiful part of the world. In June I was still losing weight rapidly. In July I had my sister’s graduation and our flight to Brisbane. In August we visited Melbourne and Sydney then home for school starting. In September my lovely Honda Civic decided to not work any more - very sad. In October I launched the ab41 magazine for Ellon. In November would you believe I had two more dance weekends and here we are in December...

I hope you will find time to catch up with all your family and friends over the festive period. Keep active to help fight off the bugs. Indulge on Christmas day only then re-group to normal eating.

Thank you for reading the gazette I do hope you find it useful. Thank you to all my advertisers, old, new and to those that are still thinking about it. The delivery team - a huge thanks, can’t get the magazines out without you.

In the meantime, why not re-fill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

Until next year,

Sue

German soldiers of the 134th Saxon Regiment and British soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment meet in no man’s land, December 26

The Christmas TruceChristmas Eve 1914. The Western Front. Weeks of rain have ended and mud is becoming ice. Despite calls for a Christmas ceasefire, fighting has continued throughout December, although today it seems half-hearted in many places.

Staff Sergeant Clement Barker is in his trench with his comrades. Across No Man’s Land, the Germans are decorating tiny trees sent from home with candles as they sing Stille Nacht (Silent Night). “The trenches were a blaze of Christmas trees,” one Tommy recalled, “and our sentries were regaled for

hours with traditional Christmas songs.” In some places, English troops decide that they “ought to retaliate in some way.” “So we sang The First Noël... they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs, O Tannenbaum.”

At Barker’s trench, a German soldier appears. “He said that if (we) did not fire, they wouldn’t in the morning,” Barker wrote later. Next morning, Barker’s men cautiously venture out to retrieve and bury their dead. No shots are fired. Soon they’re shaking hands with the Germans and exchanging gifts, and then “a football is kicked out of our trenches, and Germans and English play football.”

Henry Williamson, who later wrote Tarka the Otter, also recalled football matches, but behind German lines; if British and German troops played together,

he made no mention of it. However, despite the myths surrounding Truce matches between both sides, some are well-documented in letters. Two soldiers of the 6th Cheshires described a huge, free-for-all match in Wulverghem, Belgium, where No Man’s Land was less damaged by shell fire.

Williamson recalled the Germans singing Silent Night, too, before inviting the English closer. His unit suspected a trap. “We crept out... expecting any moment to fall flat with the machine guns opening up. And nothing happened.” Both sides were soon exchanging gifts and greetings, and similar scenes were occurring at many points along the Front. Cigarettes, rations, uniform buttons and even addresses were exchanged. One English trench received a German chocolate cake, together with a ceasefire request and an invitation to an impromptu concert. “Just think,” wrote one soldier to his family, “while you were eating turkey I was talking and shaking hands with the very men I had been trying to kill a few hours before!”

The truce at Williamson’s position held for four days before orders arrived to end fraternisation, while the Germans were warned to expect visits from senior officers; they sent a message across, explaining that they would have to fire their machine guns, but would fire high to avoid hitting anyone.

For Barker, peace lasted a little longer too. “Night came and still no shots. Boxing day the same, and has remained so up to now,” he wrote a few days later. But gradually fighting resumed. Captain J.C. Dunn’s account of resuming hostilities is poignant: “I fired three shots in the air and put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” on it, and I climbed on the parapet...[the Germans] put up a sheet with “Thank you” on it, and the German Captain appeared... We both bowed and saluted... he fired two shots in the air, and the War was on again.”

Both truces (and football games) had occurred in earlier wars. So what makes the 1914 Christmas Truce especially memorable? Perhaps because in a war that cost over 10 million lives, it was, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, “one human episode amid all the atrocities.”

Rolls Royce WraithThis is surreal. I’m wrapped in the finest leather, staring at some of most ornate materials I’ve ever seen inside a car and yet still I’m wafting along the challenging A543 at a pace that is leaving the RTOTY crowd lagging behind.

Surfing on a gloriously torque-filled surge of V12 goodness, delicately light steering guiding this two ton luxury monster across the Welsh moors, I’m opening up a gap on the cars behind me as my relationship with the Rolls-Royce Wraith finally clicks. For the last two days I’ve been living in fear of harming the £219,480 brute, every wayward

sheep tying my stomach in knots, every oncoming tractor making me wince at the impending doom that never happens.

You see driving the Wraith is quite some responsibility. With a price tag that wouldn’t look out of place in an estate agent’s window, piloting the curvy-rear ended British beauty – the sportiest of Rolls-Royces – really is a nerve-wracking experience. Well, at least at first it is. In time, as the miles rise, fear eases, and you finally begin to gel with the giant – and it’s then, at this moment, that the wonder of this incredible feat of engineering is finally hammered home.

It’s here, now, on this stunning piece of tarmac that’s twisting across the dew-dipped Welsh countryside that the Wraith truly comes alive. The 624bhp V12 may be whisper quiet on the

motorway, where the dash tells you there’s still 90 per cent of power in reserve (there’s no gaudy rev counter in here), but in kick down it growls, bellows deep and powers

off towards the future like a Bullet Train. The first time I let the Roller scamper off, it shocks with the aggressive nature it adds digits to the head-up display. Make no mistake, this big girl has serious pace.

There’s no hiding the Wraith’s girth, though. It’s absolutely huge – and feels it. Most of the team who got behind the wheel exited with a huge grin on their face, not just because it was such an event to drive, but because they handed back the jewel-like key and returned the Wraith unscathed. Everyone also agreed that it was simply a very special place to spend time in.

Driving the Wraith is an event. From the automatically-closing suicide doors, to the inch-deep lamb’s wool carpets, to the glass buttons on the dash and beautifully machined solid metal vent pulls and piano black dash, everything inside feels five star hotel, Ritz-like perfect. All it needs is a butler on the options list to retrieve the umbrellas from inside the flanks of the two front doors to be truly palatial.

Driving it to and from Wales for our shoot I was staggered at how comfortable, relaxing and easy it is to clock up hundreds of miles with so little effort. Yes, the 327g/km emissions

and 20.2mpg might worry the wallet, but it’s a small price to pay for spa-like levels of luxury.

Rolls-Royce insists its cars are bought by owner drivers – and after a week behind the wheel of the Wraith I can well believe that. Yes, sitting in the back might be a pleasant place to spend time, but the Wraith is aimed squarely at the driver and after shelling out close to a quarter of a million pounds I for one know exactly which seat I’d be occupying. Design a blissful beDroomYour bedroom is a private retreat, a special place in which to relax, unwind and express your true personality. Our tips from expert Katherine Sorrell will help you make it as comfortable, functional and beautiful as possible

First, think about how you use your bedroom – is it just for sleeping, or do you listen to music, watch TV, make phone calls or even work? You will need to allocate space for each different function. Then, consider the atmosphere you want to create – would you prefer a light, bright and airy room, or one that is dark and dramatic? In general, soft and gentle colours are considered most restful, and it is a good idea to avoid loud patterns and clashing shades. A feature wall (perhaps behind the bed head), with either one strong paint colour or an interesting wallpaper pattern, can be a great way to provide interest without going over the top.

In high-traffic areas such as halls and living rooms, carpet (if used at all) needs to be hard-wearing and practical. In a bedroom, however, wear and tear is not such a factor, spills are not such a risk and bare feet are more likely to be the norm. All of which means that this is the ideal place to give your toes a treat and opt for a sumptuous, deep-pile carpet. That said, natural or painted wooden floorboards with a few rugs scattered about (on each side of the bed in particular) is an alternative with masses of character.

Design a blissful beDroomWhether you use curtains, blinds or shutters, your windows should be well-covered, both for privacy and to avoid early-morning sunlight waking you up. Sumptuous curtains with a blackout lining will do the trick, as will louvered shutters – which also offer an extra element of security. Roller blinds are plain and simple, and ideal where space is restricted, while Roman blinds pull up in lovely soft folds that give an attractively draped effect.

Aim for the maximum storage possible: ideally a combination of floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes with free-standing pieces for character and flexibility. If in doubt, the only way to calculate exactly how much storage you need is to take a tape measure and calculate square footage for long and short hanging, folded clothes, shoes, blankets, linens and other items. Plan the interior of a wardrobe with the utmost precision, and look for gadgets such as tie racks, belt racks and pull-out trays. If you’re really short of space, clever storage ideas include under-bed drawers, stacking boxes, canvas “tidies” hung on the back of the door, plastic shoe racks stacked inside the wardrobe, and a bamboo ladder leant against the wall for scarves, spare bed linen or clothes.

Subtle, flattering lighting is best for a bedroom, and if yours is not quite how you would like it you can make some quick, easy and inexpensive changes such as adding a table lamp or two in the corners, and fitting a dimmer switch to a central pendant. A strong, bright light, on the other hand, is essential above a dressing table mirror (don’t position it to one side – it will cause awkward shadows). For bedside reading, a pair of swing-arm, wall-mounted lights will free up space on a bedside table – some types include tiny, adjustable spotlights so you can enjoy a novel without disturbing your partner.

Lastly, to transform a bedroom from boring to boudoir, introduce sumptuous bed linens that are gorgeous to look at and enjoyable to touch – cool and crisp or cosy and warm, depending on the time of year. The quickest and easiest way to put together a gorgeous-looking bed is simply to use plain white or off-white sheets, pillow cases and a duvet cover, and add a stunning throw, blanket, eiderdown

or quilt – or several, for eye-catching colour and pattern. Layer texture on texture, plains with patterns, modern with vintage – creating a serene and luxurious, indulgent retreat.

Get a really good night’s sleep

• Choose as big a bed as you can, as disturbance from a partner is one of the most common causes of sleeping complaints.

• The mattress should be comfortable and supportive. Lying down, slide the flat of your hand into the hollow of your back. If it slides in very easily, the bed is too firm; if it’s hard to slide your hand in, the bed is too soft.

This is a great dessert at any time of year which you can pre-prepare and keep in the freezer till you need it. It works well with any type of berries, but for the best texture, use fresh fruit. Ingredients300g Caster Sugar8 Egg Yolks4 Small Punnets (Preferably Fresh) Raspberries 75g Toasted OatmealHalf Litre of Double Cream (Lightly Whipped)3 Tbsp. Clear HoneyWhisky to Taste

Iced Cranachan ParfaitMethod

Line a terrine dish or mould with Clingfilm and set aside.

Puree raspberries with 100g sugar using a liquidiser or stick blender, then pass through a sieve until smooth and no pips. If you have used frozen raspberries, drain most of the liquid off after defrosting before you make the puree.

Whisk eggs yolks and 200g sugar in a bowl over a bowl of boiling water until light in colour and thick enough to leave a trail.

Add raspberry puree, oatmeal, honey, and whisky to egg mixture and mix well.

Fold in the lightly whipped cream. It is important now to taste the mixture to see if it needs more sugar, whisky or honey to suit your own tastes.

Pour mixture into the mould or terrine dish and freeze overnight.

Remove the parfait from the freezer around 5 minutes before serving. Turn the parfait out of the dish, peel off the cling film and slice with a knife which has been run under hot water.

Serve garnished with raspberries and mint.

Bug-Busting Day: Say Goodbye to Head LiceJanuary 31st is the first of this year’s National Bug Busting Days, when families of UK schoolchildren are given a comb kit to detect and remove head lice.

These miniscule insects live in human hair and feed on blood from the scalp. Unfortunately they’re very common, particularly amongst children. Almost as common as head lice myths...

THE MYTHS:Head lice can jump, fly and swim. Not without tiny trampolines or armbands.

Head lice love dirty hair. No. They’re not fussy about length, style or cleanliness.

Head lice can be caught from animals. No, only by head to head contact with a person already harbouring them.

You know you have head lice; your scalp itches. Not necessarily. The itching is a reaction to lice faeces and bites, and can occur weeks or months after lice arrive (or not at all). Don’t presume hairline rashes are caused by lice; check.

Insecticides will prevent head lice. No, they won’t, and they should only be used if a live louse is seen on the hair.

You need to boil/dry-clean clothes and bedding if you have head lice. There’s no need. Only dead or dying lice lose their grip and fall from your hair.

Detecting Head LiceLice eggs are stuck firmly to the hair, close to the warm scalp, making them hard to spot and remove until hair growth moves them away from the scalp and you notice nits (empty eggshells).

Head lice are pale grey and smaller than a pinhead when they hatch and sesame seed size when fully grown, so they’re difficult to see too. Use wet-coming to find them, using a head lice comb with tooth spacing of 0.2-0.3mm, as this will catch even the tiniest louse (see below).

Eradicating Head LiceWet Combing

Although wet combing is very efficient, it must be done thoroughly and regularly as eggs can be missed. At 9 days old, a

female louse can lay eggs which hatch around a week later - so if a few lice or eggs are missed, hair can quickly become infested again.

•Shampoo, condition and detangle hair first, leaving conditioner in.

•Draw the detection comb through the hair from the roots to the ends, checking the comb for lice after each stroke. Remove them by rinsing or wiping.

•Rinse hair and then comb thoroughly again.

•Repeat every three days until day 15 to prevent newly-hatched lice maturing.

Electric nit combs

These claim to kill head lice with a small electric shock. Opinions vary on their effectiveness.

Silicone-based lotions (e.g. dimeticone)

These lotions coat the lice, preventing them from absorbing water and so killing them. Used properly, they are very effective.

Chemical insecticides (e.g. malathion, phenothrin, permethrin)

Rarely a first recommendation now, as head lice are increasingly resistant to them and they can be harmful if used persistently. Treat everyone affected at the same time, follow instructions carefully and use a detection comb to remove dead lice and nits. Check hair a few days later and then again after 10-12 days, as not all treatments kill eggs.

Preventing Head LiceThe best method is regular combing using a proper detection comb, preferably weekly.

If you need a product recommendation or are finding lice difficult to eradicate then ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice, particularly if treating babies, pregnant or breastfeeding mums, or people with allergies or asthma.

Teen View - Christmas

Getting the tree...Christmas Day is fast approaching and I am super excited. My first objective is to find and purchase the essential feature in the home... a Christmas tree!

Each year I volunteer to choose the Christmas tree. Originally we went to B&Q but in the last few years we have swapped to picking one from the Tyrebagger Christmas Tree Shop! In my opinion Tyrebagger has a greater festive feeling as it is located in a forest, with a huge variety of trees to choose from. There is also the added service of the burger van - ideal if you’re feeling peckish during the hunt for the perfect tree.

We usually arrive wearing wellies, hats and scarfs, the process does not take long as we immediately discard the 4ft trees and head straight for the taller ones. Once we’ve bought a reasonably large tree, we haul it to the ash desk, pay and head towards the car. Every year we fail to measure the tree up in proportion to the length of the car and often it runs from the dash board to the back of the boot.

Once we have reached the house the next aim is to put up the tree. However, more often than not, the tree exceeds the height of the kitchen ceiling which results in slight alterations (chopping the top off!) The excitement at the arrival of the tree initiates the fun filled task of decorating. My two brothers and I start off enthusiastically but the boys are fed up after five minutes which leaves me to decorate the rest, secretly I am quite glad I tend to reposition every decoration they had hung on the tree.

To decorate I use baubles, beads, bells, lights, any primary school attempt at a decoration, chocolates and lastly the fairy. The chocolates take a substantial amount of time to tie the thread to the branches but it’s worth it in the end . I do eat quite a few and also hide some in amongst the branches so I have a secret stash for later in the week.

Personally I really enjoy buying and decorating the tree and I’ve already planned my visit to the Tyrebagger Christmas Tree Shop. I do hope you all enjoy decorating and getting into the Christmas spirit.

Merry Christmas,

Tara MacLeod x
