Graphic Design Applications Photoshop Lesson 7: Cool Text Effects In this lesson, you will experiment with some interesting text effects that can really add a creative touch to your graphic design work. Using Text as a Clipping Mask: You will now use some text to clip areas of a photograph. This creates an interesting design that can be used in all types of documents. Pay close attention to the directions and follow them exactly as they appear in this lesson. 1. In Photoshop, open the Candy.jpg image from the Templates drive in \Photoshop Lessons\Lesson 7. You will now create a duplicate layer of this photo. 2. Click the Layers menu and select Duplicate Layer… Name this new layer Hearts Copy and click . 3. Make the Background layer the active layer in the Layers Palette. 4. Click the Create New Layer button on the bottom of the Layers Palette. Graphic Design ApplicationsPhotoshop Lesson 7: Cool Text Effects

In this lesson, you will experiment with some interesting text effects that can really add a creative touch to your graphic design work.

Using Text as a Clipping Mask:You will now use some text to clip areas of a photograph. This creates an interesting design that can be used in all types of documents. Pay close attention to the directions and follow them exactly as they appear in this lesson.

1. In Photoshop, open the Candy.jpg image from the Templates drive in \Photoshop Lessons\Lesson 7.

You will now create a duplicate layer of this photo.

2. Click the Layers menu and select Duplicate Layer… Name this new layer Hearts Copy and click

.

3. Make the Background layer the active layer in the Layers Palette.

4. Click the Create New Layer button on the bottom of the Layers Palette. The new layer should be added between the Background layer and the Candy Copy layer.

5. Rename the Layer 1 layer as White Fill.

6. Make sure the White Fill layer is active in the Layers Palette.

7. Click the Edit menu and select Fill…

8. Select to use White as the fill. Click .

You won’t be able to tell any difference with the display on your screen. The layer thumbnail on the Layers Palette should show the White Fill layer as a plain white layer.

9. Make the Hearts Copy layer the active layer in the Layers Palette.

10. Click the Horizontal Type tool .

11. Change the font to Showcard Gothic and the font size to 72.

12. Type the work Candy on the page.

13. Click on the Move tool .

14. Click the Edit menu and select Free Transform. Sizing handles will appear around the text you just typed.

15. Click and drag the sizing handles until the text takes up most of the space on the page.

16. Click the on the Options Bar when you have finished resizing the text.

17. Drag the Candy text layer below the Hearts Copy layer in the Layers Palette.

18. Make the Hearts Copy layer active in the Layers Palette.

19. Click the Layer menu and select Create Clipping Mask. The photo of the candy will be clipped to the text.

20. Save this file as Candy_XX.jpg in the Graphic Design folder in your H drive.

Creating a Text Reflection Effect:You will now use techniques to create the illusion of reflected text.

1. In Photoshop, click the File menu and select New…

2. Set the dimensions of the new document to 11 inches wide and 8.5 inches high.

3. Make sure the Color Mode is set to RGB Color.

4. Click .

You will now fill the background with the color black.

5. Click the Edit menu and select Fill… Use Black as the fill and click .

6. Click the Horizontal Type tool .

7. On the Options Bar, change the font to Impact.

8. Click in the font size box and type in the number 150 and press Enter on your keyboard. This will

change the font size to 150 point.

9. Click the color red on the Swatches (or Color) Palette.

10. Click on the page and type the word Brandon.

11. Click the on the Options Bar when you have finished typing the text.

12. Click the Edit menu and select Free Transform.

13. Click and drag the sizing handles to make the text almost fill the top half of the page.

14. Click the on the Options Bar when you have finished resizing the text.

15. Make sure that the Brandon layer is active in the Layers Palette.

16. Click the Layer menu and select Duplicate Layer… Name this layer Reflection and click .

17. Click and drag the duplicated layer below the first layer.

18. Make sure the Reflection layer is active in the Layers Palette.

19. Click the Edit menu and select Transform > Flip Vertical. The bottom text will flip like a reflection of the text at the top of the page.

Although this already looks somewhat like a reflection, you will use a gradient to make it look more like it.

20. Make sure the Reflection layer is active in the Layers Palette.

21. Click on the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers Palette. A layer mask will be added to the Reflection layer on the Layers Palette.

22. Click the Gradient tool on the Tools Palette. (If you can’t find the Gradient tool, click and hold the Paint Bucket tool.)

23. Click the color black on the Swatches (or Color) Palette.

24. On the Options Bar, make sure the gradient is set to go from dark to light.

25. Click in the gap between the text on the page and drag to cover the reflected text. (See below for where to click and drag.)

The effect makes it look more like reflected text.

26. Save this file as Reflections_XX.jpg in the Graphic Design folder of your H drive.
