You will need some household items for Thursday’s maths lesson. Whenever work is to be submitted to student dojo portfolios we have indicated this in red underlined text above the teaching point.*If your child is struggling with any of the tasks, you can try to simplify them or contact your child’s teacher for suggestions*.

Teaching PointDigger the Dog – Students are to dig for facts in a text (See Reading resources below)
ActivityRead the book “Koalas by Kate Riggs” on getepic.comDiscuss the facts found in the book. Write 5 facts that you have learned from the text in CAFÉ books.
Listen to your child read a levelled book.
Teaching PointThe students will label a diagram and write a caption for a photo of a koala.
Activity1. Refer to the text ‘Koalas by Kate
Riggs’.2. Brainstorm important aspects of a
koala that would need to be labelled. 3. In their ABC books students paste in
the photo of a koala and label the main characteristics. (See pages 20 and 21 of the text and example below)
4. Underneath the photo, write a caption about the photo. (See example below)
Extend – Write more than one sentence as a caption.
Teaching PointFamiliarising with the ‘ur’, ‘ir’ sound as in bird.
Activity1. Sing the Sound Waves song and
do the actions (see instructions below for where to find this).
2. Complete page 50
Teaching PointStudents will be using skip counting to count the number of items in a photo.
Activity1. Show objects in groups of 5 – students first
estimate and then count the number of objects they see. They will explain how they counted the objects.
2. Show the photos of groups of people, using the smaller group first.
3. Estimate the number of people in the photo before counting and write that guess down.
4. Count the people using skip counting and write down on the sheet how the answer was found.
5. Repeat this with the second sheet of people.Extend – How many cars will it take to fill the carpark? Estimate and then count to check. Write down how the answer was found.
Reflect on how close the estimation was to the actual count.

Teaching PointScoop the pelican – Students are to scoop phrases to punctuation to make their reading more fluent.
Activity1. Open the Koalas book from
www.getepic.com2. Take it in turns to read some of the
pages, using scooping to show fluency.
Listen to your child read, focussing on using Scoop the pelican to read with fluency.
Teaching PointStudents will write a report about koalas in sentences.
ActivityChildren to focus on the Koalas text and the facts they recalled yesterday in their reading.Use the Report poster as a guide to write a report that includes a Title, Classification, Description, Location and Interesting fact.
Look for other facts that are also important about koalas.

Teaching PointStudents will practise making patterns using household items
Activity1. Talk to your child about the different
features (e.g. colour and shape) that you can use to make recurring patterns.
2. Show your child an example (e.g. white cup, fork, spoon OR coloured lego blocks red, blue, yellow, red, blue, yellow). Point out what makes this a recurring pattern reinforcing the colours and shapes.
3. Students to make their own recurring pattern using household items

Teaching PointStudents focus on their own reading goals that will be in their own reading diary. If you are unsure please contact your child’s teacher.
Activity1. Choose any book to read with your
child, focussing on the reading goal that is in their yellow reading diary.
2. Write a response to the text – it can be written or drawn. (e.g. write their feelings about the book, their favourite part, what they think will happen next, explain character actions or feelings etc.)

Story:Write a fairy-tale, fractured fairy-tale or story involving family, friends, pets etc.
Be an Artist:Paint, pastel, pencil, charcoal, mixed medium, sculpture (remember salt dough?). Use what you have to create something.
In the backyard: Ride your bike, cricket, kick a footy, shoot hoops, gardening, trampolining, skip, hide and seek, throw and catch, obstacle course…
Cooking:Create your own Masterchef or MKR! Follow recipes, using correct measurements.
Picture story book:Create your own book that has a front cover, title page, at least 4 pages and a blurb on the back cover.
Code a Game: Check out Hour of Code.org
Indoors Activity:Cosmic kids yoga (YouTube), stretching, Pilates, aerobics, Zumba, dance etc.
Knit/Braid:Have a go at knitting, finger knitting, making loom bands or braiding –you might need a YouTube tutorial!
Keep a diary or journal:Talk about what you did, your feelings, funny anecdotes, & random things you noticed!
Construction:Build a city, vehicle, etc. using Lego, meccano, anything… using simple machine concepts (lever, ramp, wedge, screw, pulley).
Mediation:Use the app Smiling Minds and meditate.
Make Music:Practise playing an instrument… OR make your own instruments and band.
Poetry Anthology:* Acrostics* Haiku* Shape poetry* Colour poems* 3 line poems
Scintillating Science:Find some fun chemistry experiments to try at home! The internet is FULL of ideas!
Walk/Ride:As a family take a walk or bike ride around the block, around a lake, in the bush, down a bike path…
Learn a Skill:Get your parents to teach you how to tie your shoelaces, make a sandwich, use the washing machine, fold your clothes, making your bed, stack the dishwasher, wash and dry dishes…
Retell: Briefly retell a story you have read by summarising it into your own words – it doesn’t need to be word for word from the story.
Nature Lovers:Collect leaf and flower samples to press; create a photograph collection; use them to ‘print’ with paint…
Active ‘Love’ Jobs:Clean the cars, wash windows, garden, vacuum etc. (Some might call this community service.)
Wood/Cardboard: Build something!
Procedural Text: Write a procedure for something you have made e.g. how to make a sandwich, how to make a cubby etc.
Measure and draw: Measure and calculate the length of each room in your house using body parts. Draw each room and label the length of walls.
At an oval or park:Play cricket, kick a footy, throw a Frisbee, jog a lap or two and throw in some sprints, throw a tennis ball for your dog…
Craft It:Scrapbooking, jewellery, hair designs, make cards to send, make and hang a mobile or wind chime…
Information report:Research ANY topic of interest to you. Create a model to represent part of your learning. Use headings, diagrams, photos & captions …

There are also Library & ICT lessons and activities that we would have done in our weekly program at school on the school website. These are optional additional activities if your children wish to do them. We can provide a hard copy if requested.
