WELCOME!
Welcome to the Pennine Acute NHS Trust at Rochdale Infirmary and to the Clinical Assessment Unit.
On commencement of a placement you will be allocated a Mentor who will be responsible for identifying your learning needs and guide you to achieve your learning objectives.
The Ward Manager for the Clinical Assessment Unit is Andrew Bennett, Telephone 01706 517856.

THE CLINICAL ASSESSMENT UNIT
The Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) is a sixteen bedded unit which also has a two Ambulatory Care areas. The Unit has a six bedded female bay, a six bedded male bay and 4 side wards.
The CAU provides rapid assessment and diagnostics, treatments and follow up management plans for patients referred by their GP, the Urgent Care Centre at Rochdale Infirmary (UCC), and other sites A&E departments.
Our Unit can also receive referrals from community services such as the HEATT car (HMR Emergency Assessment and Treatment Team).
CAU is predominantly a short stay unit of approximately 48 hours, although at times patients can stay longer. Patients on the CAU are reviewed daily by a Consultant and are discharged to their own homes or to another area if needing further assessment such as the Oasis Unit or to Intermediate Care (IMC) to Wolstenholme ward or Tudor Court.
The Clinical Assessment Unit has dedicated Consultants Dr Shona McCallum Dr Zia Akram and Dr Taseem who are supported by a team of SHO’s and GPs. Weekend ward rounds are conducted by a Consultant from Royal Oldham Hospital.
The Unit works alongside various members of the Multidisciplinary Team to enable the best nursing care and outcome for each patient on an individual basis. During your time with us you will come into contact with :
Transfer of Care Team: who assist with discharge planning Home in a Day Team : consisting of nurses, physiotherapists and
occupational therapists who assist with discharge planning and can take the patient home to be assessed in their own homes.
Social Workers: who also assist with discharge planning and assessment Pharmacists: On the Unit we have a non- medical prescribing pharmacist
allocated who checks patients medication and completes discharge prescriptions.
X-Ray/ CT/MRI and Endoscopy Department: who provide relevant required investigations.
Tissue Viability Nurse: who provides expert advice on wound care and management.
Dietician: who provides expert advice on nutrition. Alcohol Link Workers: who provide advice in relation to alcohol related
admissions. Pathology/haematology/ blood bank: who provide blood test results. CAU has
its own Point of Care lab where tests such as FBC, U&E’s, Blood Gases, Trop I and D-Dimer can be processed for rapid results to aid diagnosis.
RAID Nurses: who provide mental health assessments. Medical Services: the Unit has the privilege of having its own ambulance
service which is available Monday – Friday 09.00-20.00. The service is used for admissions, discharges and transfers and is provided by a private company called Medical Services.
This list is not exhaustive as on a daily basis the Nursing Team work with many members of the MDT. During your placement you will be encouraged to spend some time with different members to understand each role in providing holistic care. Please make your mentor aware if you have a specific interest in any area.
PLACEMENT INFORMATION
Shift Times :
Early 07.30-15.30, 30 minutes break
Late 12.30-20.30, 30 minutes break
Long Day 07.30-20.30, 2 x 30 minute breaks
Night Shift 20.00- 08.00, 2 45 minute breaks
The shift pattern normally consists of 3 long days per week although this can be discussed with your allocated mentor.
SICKNESS/ABSENCE
If for any reason you are unable to attend for your shift please follow the correct procedure and contact the Unit and also the University. If possible, please would you inform the Unit of an expected date of return.
