BASIC NAVIGATION

1. When first accessing the web mapsoftware, you will notice on the lefthand side the webmap console, whichcontainsfouricons.Thetopisthelegend,which displays basic map information,themeasuring tool,whichallowsyou tomeasure distance and area on themap,the graphics tool, which allows you tocreategraphicsonyourmap,andprintingoptions.

2. Just to the rightof theof thewebmapconsole is the zoom-in and zoom-outfeature, which allows you to adjust thescale of the map and will also changethe amountof information that is beingdisplayed. As you continue to zoom in,moreinformationwillbedisplayed.Belowthe zoom feature is the home button,whichallowsyoutoreturntoyourdefaultscale. Below is the location feature,which,ifyou’reactuallyworkingandthefieldandwanttoknowyour locationonthemap,canbeusedtofindyourexactlocationinrelationtothemap.

3. In the top right hand corner are displayfeatures of the map. The left icon, themap imagery, allows you to change thebackground imagery of your map. Themiddle icon, the layers, allows you toselectwhatinformationisbeingdisplayedonyourmap.The righthand icon is thebookmarks,whichcanhelpyounavigateback to default settings and scales. Formore information about the display,pleaseseebelow.

4. At the bottom left hand corner of themap is the scale, which allows you tosee the scale of the map and estimatedistance.Nexttothescaleisthelatitudeand longitude, which is linked to yourcursor. As you move your cursor aboutthemap, the latitude and longitudewillautomatically adjust depending on thelocationofyourcursor.

LEGEND

Whenyou selectyour legend tool from thewebmap console, the legend informationaboutyourmapwillbedisplayed.Asyouzoominonyourmap,moreandmore informationwillbedisplayedinyourlegend.Ifthereisanyinformation you don’twant to be displayedon the legend,you can turn off informationlayers under the layers feature (see Displayfor more information). You can also selectobjects on yourmap, like trails or points ofinterest,andinformationboxeswillcomeupwhich display information like the length ofthetrail,thename,etc.

MEASUREMENTS

The icon next to the legend icon is theMeasurement Tool. By clicking on the left-hand icon under Measurement, you canmeasurearea.Byclickingonyourmaponceyouareabletoplotpointstomeasure,andbydouble-clicking,youwillbeabletocompleteyour measurement area. Your measurementresult will be displayed below. The middleicon allows you to measure distance. Witheachclickyoucanplotpoints,andbydouble-clicking, you are able to complete yourmeasurement. To adjust the metric of yourmeasurement,youcanclickonthedropdowntriangleandselectedyourpreferredmetric,asshownabove.Thelasticonallowsyoutoplotlatitudeand longitudepoints.Keep inmind,youcanonlyplotonepointatatime.

GRAPHICS

By selecting the painters palette icon fromthe web map console, you will be able touse the graphics tool to put graphics onyourmap.Youwillfirstselectagraphicdrawmode. Once selected, you can name yourgraphic, give it adescription, andcustomizethecolor,size,andtransparency.Tomeasurethe graphic you are creating, make sure toselect the “show measurement” option. Asyou bring your cursor onto the map afterselectingyourdrawingmode,therewillbeasmall informationboxdescribinghowtousethetool.Thenyoucancreateyourgraphic.

Once you’ve finished your graphic, thegraphic informationwill be displayed in thegraphics list. Through this list, you can edityour graphic size and shape by clicking theEdit Button, which is the blue button withthe pencil. You can delete your graphic byselecting theDelete Button, the red buttonwith the “X”. You can also edit how thegraphics are arranged upon eachother bymovingyourgraphicusingtheupanddownarrowbuttons.Tozoomtoyourgraphic,youcanusethemagnifyingglassbutton.

GRAPHICS

At thebottomof theGraphicsConsole,youwill see five additional buttons. The bluemagnifying glass allows you to zoom tomultiple graphics if you have the graphicsselected. The button next to that with thetwo rectangleson itallowsyou toduplicateselectedgraphics.The“X”redbuttonallowsyou to delete all selected graphics at once.Next to thisbutton isabluebuttonwithanupwards pointing arrow.This is the “ExportGraphics” button. By clicking this, you canexport selected graphics which you cansave and access later. Formore informationabout exporting graphics, see “Exportingand Printing” instructions below. To the farright is the “ImportGraphics” button,whichallowsyoutoimportgraphicsontoyourmapthatyou’vealreadycreated.Onceyouimportyourgraphics,youcantheneditthemandre-exportthem.

Tohideallyourgraphicsfrombeingdisplayedon your map, you can selected the “HideGraphics”optioninthetoprighthandcorneroftheGraphicsList.

EXPORTING&PRINTING

Toexportthegraphicsyou’vemadeonyourmap,youwillgotothegraphicslistunderthegraphics feature, select which graphics youwanttoexportbyclickingonthesmallgreyboxtothelefthandsideofthename,andclickon thebluebuttonwith theupwards facingarrowatthebottomoftheWebMapconsole.IfyouareusingaPC,thiswillbeexportedasa“.json”file.Justsavethisfileandyouwillbeabletoimportthisfilewithallyourexportedgraphicslater.IfyouareusingaMAC,anewbrowsertabwillpopupthatisjustcode.Copythiscode,openitinawordfile,andthensavethefileasa“.txt”file.Whenyou importthisfile later, your graphic information will beimported.

Toprintyourmap, select thePrinter iconatthetopoftheWebMapconsolenexttotheGraphicToolicon.Selectyourdesiredlayout,format, and for more advanced printingoptions, select the “advanced” button.Thentoprint,selectthe“print”button.

To change the background image of yourmap, select the left icon in the upper righthandcornerofthemap–thisistheBasemapGallery.Fromhereyoucanchoosetoselectyour preferred map imagery, as displayedabove.

LAYERS&BOOKMARKS

Intheupperrighthandcornerofthemap,themiddleiconisthe“Layers”andtherighticonis the “Bookmarks.” If youwant to limit theamountofinformationyourmapisdisplaying,you can access the layers and select anyinformationyoudonotwishtobedisplayedby de-selecting the gray box to the left ofthelayername.Keepinmind,differentlayersarevisible at different scales, so at a thirty-mile zoom scale youwill not see layers like“Important Features.” If youwant to displaythe layer information again after having itturnedoff,re-selectthe layerusingthegraybox.

TotherightoftheLayersiconistheBookmarkicon. The Bookmark feature contains somepre-loaded bookmarks of commonly usedmapextents,but ifyouwanttobookmarkacertainlocationandscaleonthemap,youcando so by having themap and scale read onyourscreen.creatingabookmarkname,thenpressingthegrayplus-signbutton.Ifyouwantto delete any bookmarks, just select on abookmarkandthenpressthe“delete”buttonbelow.

DATA DRAWER

The Data Drawer feature is found at thebottom of your screen, accessible by thesmall gray tab above the “PennsylvaniaEnvironmental Council” copyright. The DataDrawerallowsustoaccessalltheinformationavailablethroughourmappingsoftwareinanorganiz-ed,tabularform.

Thedifferentcategoriescontaintrail inform-ationwhichyoumaythenselect inthedatadrawer, highlighting that trail data on themap. Once selected, youmay zoom to thatdata,clearyourselecteddata,orrefreshyourcontentbyselectingoneofthecorrespondingfunctionsintheupperlefthandcornerofthedrawer.

Whenaccessing information in thedifferentData Drawer category tabs, you can limitthe information being display by selectingthe hide/show column button, which is onthe right hand side of the drawer. Thiswillallowyoutoseeallthedifferentinformationsets for each different category tab, and byun-checkingan informationgroup, itwill nolongerbedisplayedinthedatadrawerunderthatspecifictab.

ThroughtheOptionsMenu,youcanalsofiltertheinformationdisplayforeachtab,suchaslengthinmiles,specificdestinationcorridors,etc.Onceyouhavefilteredinformationinthedata drawer, you can also filter informationbased on the map extent, which basicallymeansyouwillonlyseethedatavisibleatthescalerangeyouareon(tochangeyourscalerange, you can use the zoom feature.) Thisisalsowhereyouwillbeable toexportanydatadrawerinformationintoanexcelfilebyselecting“ExportCSV”at thebottomof theoptionsmenu.

DATA DRAWER EXPRESSION SET

Adding a filter expression allowsyou to setone specificparameter toyourdisplaydata.Youcansetparametersonnumericaldataandcategoricaldata.Afilterontraillengthinmileswould be numerical data, while categoricaldatawouldbeotherdatainformation.Whenselecting your filter feature, you will seeoptions like “ORDER 01 (String),” and thiscorrespondstothetabularorderofcolumnswithinthedatadrawer.Asanexample,underthe “Important Features” tab, the FeatureName columnwould be “ORDER 01,” Typewouldbe“Order02”andsoon.Knowingthis,youcanfilteryourcategoricaldatabasedonspecificterminology,ratherthanonnumericaldata.

You can filter with parameter options suchas “is less than,” “is exactly,” etc. This willallow you to customize your data drawerinformationasspecificallyasneeded.

Toremoveafilterexpression,simplyclickonthe“X”buttontotherightontheexpressionandthenselect“OK”button.Youexpressionhasthenbeencleared.

Expressionsetscanbecreatedandfunctioninthesamebasicmannerasafilterexpression.The only difference is that an expressionset isformattedtoallowyoutosetmultipleconditions to your data drawer, rather thanaddingafilterexpressiononebyone.

You will use this feature for instances likefinding trails less than fifty miles but morethan ten miles, finding specific importantfeatures within certain corridors, and othersearchesthatcontainmultipleparameters.

You can perform the same function of anexpression set by creating multiple filterexpressions.

Toremoveanexpressionset,simplyclickonthe“X”buttontotherightontheexpressionsandthenselect“OK”button.Youexpressionshavethenbeencleared.
