The Jungle Book Production

Our Year five and six performers received a really appreciative response and many accolades from a packed house of family and friends for their performance last night. It was exceptional, with the students not only producing optimal levels of performance, but also obviously all enjoying the experience. The preparation of the sixty one performers is a logistical challenge that is only made possible due to a host of volunteers doing the makeup, hair and the fitting of the costumes. I am including the Acknowledgements from the program so everyone can appreciate the wonderful community support for the musical.

None of this could happen without the work and considerable expertise of Mrs Horrocks as the Director. It is a gift to be able to empower and support all students to perform at such a high level, with such confidence and enjoyment. Well done and thanks to Maureen and all other members of staff who have put in extensive extra work to help bring it all together. (More photos will be published in next week’s newsletter). Display of Previous Musicals We now have a canvas featuring a photograph from each of the seventeen musicals performed across the years. To help cover the cost of each canvas, we are seeking donations of $150 for from families within the school and any ex-families who might be interested in contributing. We will place a plaque recognising the family donation under the relevant canvas or under a canvas of their choice. Interested donors are asked to contact Fran. Please share this information with any families of past students you know who may be interested in this opportunity. My thanks to Mr Torrese (with support from Mrs Horrocks) for initiating and supervising this initiative to promote a point of difference our school has offered for many years. Thanks also to Mike Annert from Blue Wren Gallery and Framing for supplying each professional quality canvas and to Mr Hogan for displaying them so effectively. If you wish to purchase your own copy of one of these pictures, you can contact Mike on 9759 1100 or at [email protected]. Australian Primary Principals Association National Conference “Inspire and Engage in Visionary Leadership” The National Conference returns to Perth this year with Leaders from all school sectors from throughout Australia gathering to network and hear from world class speakers. The following quote from the conference convenors outlines this excellent opportunity for all leaders. “The Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA) National Conference travels to Perth to explore the theme of Visionary Leadership and showcase the best the profession has to offer. This is the premier event for primary school leaders who want to hear national and international presenters representing the global education profession. Delegates will experience visionary keynote sessions on the latest cutting edge research, plus a number of concurrent sessions aimed to take a deeper dive to address common challenges and provide knowledge sharing opportunities. This national event will extend engagement and professional networking and provide direct access to key service providers and innovative educational resources.” Given the quality and potential of this conference, CEWA are encouraging all Principals and Assistant Principals to attend this year. Given that we want to continue our already strongly established improvement agenda, Mr Torrese will be joining me at the conference from 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon through to Friday. We are excited to have this opportunity to grow in knowledge and skills to further develop our school. Mrs Meyer and Mrs Birch will be administrating the school in our absence. We are fortunate to have such experienced and professional leaders in our school to support our leadership and allow us to access very important leadership formation.

Staff on Long Service Leave Mrs Jackson will be taking some well earned long service leave next term. In wishing Letitia all the best for her break, I would like to acknowledge and appreciate all that she contributes to kindy and in many other ways across the school. Mrs Spencer will be replacing Mrs Jackson in Kindy. One of the recommendations of my recent Performance Review was to access some of my long service leave as renewal after a very challenging time of growth and increased accountability over the last year. I will be on leave for the first two weeks of next term and Mr Torrese has been appointed as Acting Principal in my absence. Mrs Meyer and Mrs Birch will be supporting Mr Torrese over this period of leadership. P&F Meeting – Thursday 20th September (9.10am) The next P&F Meeting is being held on Thursday 20th September at 9.00am in the staffroom. Everyone is encouraged to attend to support the important work of the P&F in many aspects of the school. Nut Allergy Friendly Policy A reminder that Our Lady of the Cape is a Nut Allergy Friendly School. Due to the increased number of students with nut related allergies, it has become necessary to have this policy in order to protect the welfare of these children who suffer a severe nut allergy. • We ask you to take care with the food that you pack in your child’s lunch box. There should be

no nuts or nut products. • Under no circumstances should children swap or share lunches. • If birthday cakes or other food items are brought to school for students, please ensure no nuts,

nut products or utensils contaminated with nut produce are used. • If your child has a nut allergy, please discuss this matter with your class teacher prior to the

commencement of school attendance. • Please ensure medication or EpiPen (if necessary) is supplied to the school with full operational

directions. Medication must be current. My thanks for the ongoing support we have from all families in helping to keep everyone safe. Access to Updated School policies We have recently updated a number of school policies and these are now available on the school website. God Bless, Des Wilkie, Principal

Learning Culture

Friendology Summit – URSTRONG

Two of our OLC teachers, Mrs King and Mrs Ricciardone, today have attended a Friendology Summit at Perth College, Mount Lawley. Dana Kerford, founder of URSTRONG and friendship expert conducted an engaging, insightful and practical day. Mrs King and Mrs Ricciardone are the latest of our teachers to be trained in the Friendology curriculum and will no doubt add to the superb “friendship expertise” that continues to grow throughout our classroom teachers and support staff. Learning Journeys - Monday Week 10, 17th September 3:30pm – 5:00pm

This year the Learning Journeys will have an “open class” approach for years PP-Year 6. The session will run from 3:30pm – 5:00pm in each classroom. Teachers will have examples of student learning on display, in work books and as interactive activities. This is a formal assessment scheduled event and is a great way to see your child’s progress and the way they learn in class.

Please avoid any detailed conversation with teachers about your child’s learning, however please feel free to arrange an appointment with the classroom teacher should you want further discussion. We hope to see you and your child at this year’s Learning Journeys, celebrating their year of learning. CATHOLIC COMMUNITY CORNER MAKING JESUS REAL Over the past week we have been on the lookout for students demonstrating “Spirit of Jesus” moments. 43 students were nominated for the “Cape Crusader” award this week, and our winners were: Oscar Avery (Naturaliste), Ruby Eastaugh (Meelup), Coby Pes (Geographe) and Ben Maslin (Leeuwin). This week’s winner of the Mama Roo Caped Crusader; “Mama CC” was Keenan Rogan. These students this week won their award for looking out for others, and being thoughtful, compassionate and encouraging. These traits all help to make OLC the special place that it is. Congratulations to these students for Making Jesus Real in our School! God bless everyone and have a great last week of term. Mrs. Amie Meyer, OLC Religious Education Coordinator
