WEEK 10, TERM 3 Windsor High School

grow leadership capabilities in all students within our community. Our students will have the opportunity to lead and support the primary school students, who will, in turn, lead and support the students from their own schools- a win-win situation for all involved. Thank you to Ms Khalid for ’leading’ this leadership

opportunity for the students.

Our Thursday Interest groups are continuing with the students gaining great skills along with paying back to the community. Here is an example of the rugs being

made by the crochet and knitting group.

Our Year 12 Music 1 HSC students had their actual HSC practical performances last week. We wish them well and hope they get some great marks for their

outstanding performances.

Congratulations to all Year 8 students for their fantastic participation in our "Viking Survivor Challenge Day". All students had a great time on our Viking Activities ranging from Catapult Battles, Viking Master chef, the Longship Design Challenge and the Ultimate Viking Raid Obstacle Course! They really earn their reward at the end of the day which was a

sausage sizzle and Viking Movie! Thanks to all the

fantastic Year 10 students who ran each station, as well as all our amazing HSIE teachers for all their hard work! And as we approach the end of term it has come to my attention that many students have had absences this term that have not been explained by a parent or caregiver. We will be putting an emphasis on this at the beginning of next term. The Education Act requires parents to provide the school with a reason for every absence. The school then needs to assess if it meets the Departments guidelines. It is also not deemed as ‘justified leave’ for parents to take students on holidays in school time. If you wish to make a case for special consideration, parents need to send a note to the school in advance, outlining the reasons for the special circumstances. Parents need to be familiar with what their legal requirements are, in relation to attendance, and a copy of the details provided by the Department of Education NSW is included to assist in this matter. Improved attendance will increase the chance for students to

be successful in the future.

Anger – What can you do?

When anger rises, think of the consequences. – Confucius

Anger is a normal emotion that all of us (adults and children) experience at some time. The resulting behav-iour is what can cause issues for the child and lead to conflict /school suspension / etc. It is important to re-member that it is the behaviour that must be addressed NOT the emotion. Encourage children / students to recognise the physical changes in the body when they get angry as well. Such as, a pounding heart, explosive feeling, desire to hit / punch something, etc. It is important to not try and reason with them while they are experiencing an angry outburst. Just like adults, they will not see rea-son in the ‘heat of the moment’, and trying to make them will only escalate the situation. Work out a plan that determines:

1. What triggers the behaviour? 2. What is ok to do? 3. What is not ok to do?

Assignments / Homework triggers behaviour – it is ok to ask for help, it is ok to do some deep breathing, it is ok to have a break every 5 minutes – it is not ok to throw my book / pencils, it is not ok to yell at my parents, it is not ok to swear. It is important that parents and teachers keep their own emotions in control. It is our role to model appropri-ate ways to deal with anger. If you yell / scream, then the child behaviour is reinforced, rather than reduced. Role-model the appropriate behaviour by demonstrating the behaviour you want to see, e.g. “I feel annoyed about that, when I calm down I’ll talk to you”. Ensuring the child is safe during an outburst and wait for them to calm down. Then talk about the behaviour and any consequences. Ask them why they are angry? What did they do? What control they do next time? Discuss any future strategies and praise any they tried to use. Teachers can also prevent classwork related triggers through preparation, e.g. a child who reacts when they have to start an assignment, perhaps needs more guidance getting started. By allowing time for this when work is given out may prevent unwanted behaviour. Parents can keep a diary if the angry is an issue. By doing this, any consistent triggers can be identified and prepared for. To determine the best way to deal with behaviour, one must first consider the situation in which the behav-iour exists, the background relating to the behaviour, how the behaviour is dealt with and more. Four ‘R’s to behaviour management

1. Rights: all children have a right to be safe and treated with respect. 2. Routines: consistency with daily routines is important. 3. Rules: Straightforward rules which can be implemented. 4.Responsibilities: set clear guidelines with clear expectations.

Four ‘W’s for consequences

1. What they did? 2. Why they did it? 3. What rule they broke? 4. What can they do to fix it?

By using consequences we ensure that children understand how the behaviour connects to the result. Through discussion of the Four ‘W’s parents / teachers can explain how the child has made a ‘choice’ – whether it be a ‘poor choice’ or a ‘good choice’.

YEAR 8 “VIKING SURVIVOR CHALLENGE DAY !”

Last Friday all Year 8 students participated in our “Viking Survivor Challenge Day” which was the final activity to wrap up our “Viking Age” Unit in HSIE. It was a fan-tastic day where all students displayed great enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. Each class formed “Viking Clans” of 4 or 5 team members and then battled it out against other clans in a series of challenges. Students rotated around activities such as “Catapult Attack”, “Viking Masterchef”, “Viking Boat Build”, and “Get Your Kit On” where students had to use newspaper, tape and foil to dress a Viking War-rior ready for battle!

There were many brave students who dared to taste test some very strange dishes in the“Cast-Iron Stomach” Challenge – with Ben T. and Cassidy C. putting their taste buds to the test! “Viking Raid Obstacle Course” was run by Yr 10 students Riley H., Luke, H. and Thomas H. This event provided much entertainment and some amazing “blooper moments”. James S. brought some extra flair to his lap by add-ing an amazing front flip at the end, while the ‘green tunnel’ obstacle saw many students struggling to wriggle through – with many commenting they looked like a giant “human Caterpillar” trying to escape from a cocoon (especially Mr Fragogiannis!)

All students then came together to watch the best teams participate in the Grand Finals to see who would be awarded the title of the “Ultimate Viking Warrior Clan”. These clans bravely took on the challenge of the “Team Ski Walk” event, which truly tested their ability to work together as a team! All Year 8 students were then rewarded with a sausage sizzle, followed by a well-deserved rest during Period 4 when they watched a Viking Movie in the Hall. A great day was certainly had by all, and a special thank you must go out to the amazing Year 10 students who helped to run all the activity stations, as well of all of our fantastic HSIE teachers for running this action-filled day!

Welfare News

It has been a very busy term for the Welfare Team. We would like to firstly welcome Miss Oppy to the Welfare Team. Miss Oppy is the new Year 8 Adviser. I would like to thank Mrs Giffin for all your work with Year 8 since the beginning of 2015. There have been a number of Welfare programs that have occurred in Term 3.

Year 7 Vaccinations occurred in Week 2, the next and last Vaccination day will occur on Tuesday 15 th November.

We had the first Year 6 Transition Day. Year 6 students attending Windsor High in 2017 participated in Maths, Food Technology, Industrial Technology, Computers and HSIE workshops. The Year 6 students quoted the day as ‘awesome’, ‘so much fun’ and ‘I cannot wait for the next one’.

We have held police talks for Year 10 and Year 12 on topics such as Drugs and Alcohol and Safer Cel-ebration.

The Welfare Team Conference occurred in Week 8. Members of the team, which includes Year Advis-ers, analysed data on attendance. We created plans for Term 4 to improve this data and to ensure all students attend school everyday and on time. We also started to plan for Wellbeing Week in Term 4. Many exciting activities and seminars are planned, so stay tuned for this fun-filled week.

The first meeting with Primary School student leaders was held in Week 9. Student leaders from Windsor South Public School, Wisemans Ferry Public School and Windsor Public School at-tended our school to create a plan to carry out a Community Project in the Hawkesbury area. Our next meeting will occur early Term 4 where we will finalise our plan and start to carry out our project.

Each fortnight Year 7 and Year 8 have participated in Home Group lessons run by their Year Advisers. Year 7 focused on positive relationships and cyber-safety. In Term 4, Year 7 will be creating Storybooks on the importance of cyber-safety to show to our new Year 7 students in 2017.

Year 8 have been completing a unit of work on Teamwork and Communication Skills in Home Group. Students have undertaken a range of activities both in and out of the classroom that directly focus on their positive interactions with their peers through various types of communication and teamwork un-der a range of circumstances. Tug-o-war was used to explicitly teach the students a variety of ways in dealing with conflict and to illustrate to them how vital it is to communicate in the appropriate way when dealing with any type of conflict. This activity also required the students to communicate with each other and work as a team to achieve a common goal.

In another lesson Year 8 worked in small groups through a varie-ty of problem solving games. Helium Hoop: all students in the group must keep their two index fingers on the

hoop at all times. The aim is to lower the hoop to the ground. Communication is a

vital skill in this activity when you have more than 5 members in a group.

The next activity also saw communication to be a vital component in working in pairs to begin with, and to stand at the same time, using nothing but the oth-er person and your feet. 8S were up for the chal-lenge and connected every person together and at-tempted to stand up at the same time.

Year 10 had a fabulous day at the‘bstreetsmart’ driver safety excursion inWeek 5.

The 2017 Captain Speeches and Voting occurred in Week 7. Congratulations to all our school leaders.

Year 11 attended the Crossroads Camp where they participated in activities such as archery, the flying fox, Cindy learnt how to knit and Mrs Ruis took lots of happy snaps! The students that did not attend the camp participated in the school Crossroads Program. Thank you to Mrs Ruis and Mr Zivkovic for attend-ing the camp and to Ms Beale, Ms Oppy, Ms Thompson and Ms Talidu for running the workshops at school.
