2009 Missouri Valley Football Conference Weekly Release (Oct. 19)

Another Top-25 Battle UNI and South Dakota State play one an-other this week, marking the second-straight week that two ranked league teams will face one another. There have been 82 previous games in which two league teams ranked in the Top 25 played one another. Of those 82, 20 times both teams were in the Top 10. Two meetings have occurred in the playoffs. The home team is 50-32, while the higher-ranked team is 45-37.

Top-5 Tussle Last weekend’s SIU-UNI game marked the fifth time in MVFC history that two teams ranked in the Top 5 played one another:Date Teams Result

4-0 League Starts Important Including South Dakota State and South-ern Illinois this year, a league team has started conference play with a 4-0 record 26 times. All but one (Western Kentucky in 2005) finished second or better in the league standings. Nineteen of the previous 24 with 4-0 or better starts earned playoff berths, while 17 won the league title.

And One for the Thumb? Only 15 teams in league history have started a season with at least five-straight conference victories - Southern Illinois and South Dakota State look to join that group this week as both are 4-0 in the MVFC. All of the previous 15 teams to start 5-0 finished second or better in the league standings. Fourteen of the 15 earned playoff berths; and 14 won the title. Nine of them went un-defeated in league play. Only twice in league history (1987, 2003) have two teams started 5-0 or better the same season:Year Team, Note (* - denotes playoffs)

It marked the second time that MSU and WIU have hooked up in a game decided by a single point. There have now been 34 league games decided by one point. That streak is now the second-longest string in Bears’ history (the record is 33 by Jason Cannon, 1995-97). It’s tied for the ninth-best streak in the league’s 25-year history. Offense

TE Clay Harbor, Missouri StateSr., 6-4, 243, Dwight, Ill. Harbor had a career high 171 yards on eight receptions in Missouri State’s 17-16 win at Western Illinois on Saturday, including five catches for 130 yards in the second half. His eight receptions also matched a career high. He had five plays of 20 yards or more in the game, includ-ing a career-long reception of 53 yards in the fourth quarter that set up the Bears’ game-winning field goal four plays later.

Defense

CB Brandon Williams, Southern IllinoisSr., 5-10, 180, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Williams scored the winning points for No. 5 SIU in its 27-20 win at No. 2 UNI. Williams intercepted a Pat Grace pass and returned it 21 yards for the TD with 2:48 left in the game. The TD sealed the game for the Salukis and it came on Wil-liams’ first pick of the season. Williams and the SIU secondary held Grace, who came into the game ranked second in the nation in passing efficiency, to just 219 yards and only allowed him to complete 46 percent of his 28 pass attempts.

Special TeamsPK Matt Hottelman, Missouri State6-2, 195, Sr., O’Fallon, Mo. Hottelman’s 37-yard field goal with 36 seconds remaining in the game sealed a 17-16 win for the Bears at Western Illinois. It marked the senior’s first-ever game-winning field goal and lifted the Bears over the Fighting Leathernecks in Macomb for the first time since 2001. He was also a perfect 2-for-2 on extra points. Perhaps even more impressive was his sensational tackle after kicking the game-winning field goal. He pinned one of the nation’s top kick return specialists, Todd Speight, in at his own 31-yard line, after Speight broke through the first line of defenders with the game on the line.

Offensive LinemanLT Josh Jellison, Indiana State6-5, 280, Jr., Plainfield (Ind.) High Jellison helped clear the way for senior Antoine Brown as he reached the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time this season and the Sycamores churned out over 200 yards on the ground versus the Redbirds.

Mr. Reliable Eyad Salem continues to leave his mark on the school record books. Sa-lem, who tied the school record with 14 catches in back-to-back games at North Dakota State and Southern Illinois, surpassed 100 yards for the third consecutive game to tie Lau-rènt Robinson’s 2005 tally. Salem had more than 100 yards receiving against the Bison and Salukis and caught nine passes for 133 yards and a score against the Sycamores.

Block Party Bert Whigham blocked a punt to set up a short field and touchdown for Illinois State during Saturday’s win over Indiana State at Hancock Stadium, but it was old hat for the senior. The block marked the third of Whigham’s career, as Sanford, Fla. native has reached out and got his hands on a punt in each of the past two seasons. Whigham has 22 tack-les on the season.

Step in the Right Direction It took Illinois State just seven games to reach the win total of the 2008 squad. The Redbirds moved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play with a 38-21 win over Indiana State at Hancock Stadium Saturday. The 2008 Red-birds won just three of 11 games and mustered just two wins in the MVFC.

Getting Down With Brown Antoine Brown became just the Sycamores’ second 100-yard rusher of the season with a 17 rush, 102-yard ef-fort versus the Redbirds. Darrius Gates opened the season a 102-yards on the ground against Quincy in the season opener. Brown broke off a team season-long rush of 39 yards against Illinois State and averaged six yards per carry.

Getting In the End Zone Making his third start this season as quarterback, sophomore Ryan Roberts had something to with all three of Indi-ana State’s three offensive touchdowns against Illinois State last week as the ISU scored a season-high 21 points versus the ‘Birds. Roberts became the first Sycamore since the 2008 season finale (Darrius Gates against Missouri State) to score two touchdowns in a single game. Roberts reached pay dirt on the ground from 17 yards out and then scored again from six yards away as the Sycamores fell 38-21 to Illinois State. Roberts also connected on a 39-yard scoring pass with Bryant Kent.

Leading Tacklers Indiana State redshirt freshman linebacker Aaron Archie (9.6 per game) heads up a group of three Sycamore de-fensive starters, which rank in the Top six league-wide for tackles per game. Cody in the Clutch QB Cody Kirby set a career high with 341 yards in the Bears’ win at WIU. His passing output was the most ever in the Terry Allen era at MSU, and the most by any Bears player signal caller since Scott Carroll’s 344-yard game at South-ern Illinois (2005). Kirby was 18-of-32 and posted his fifth career fourth-quar-ter comeback to win or tie the game in the final period. He collected his 11th career fourth-quarter touchdown pass, including 10 in his last 15 games. Road Warriors The Bears claimed their fifth win in their last seven FCS road games, including wins in 4 of their last 6 MVFC road games. Overall, the Bears were 3-3 away from Plaster Field last year and are 2-1 this year. MSU has not posted back-to-back seasons with three or more road wins since its playoff sea-sons of 1989 and 1990. Long Drivers MSU has outgained its last two op-ponents by a 762 to 606 margin, but has had to use the entire field to do so. During their last two games, the Bears have an average field position of their 18-yard line, but have compiled nine drives of 60 yards or more during that span and averaged 381 yards of total offense to secure a 4-3 start for just the second time under Terry Allen.

He is the fourth out of five coaches in YSU history to coach 100 games with the program. Dike Beede leads the way with 279, Jim Tressel ranks second with 194 and Bill Narduzzi is third 120.

The YSU Century Club YSU has two tailbacks on the roster who have rushed for more than 1,000 yards in their careers while wide re-ceiver Donald Jones is close to 1,000 in receiving yardage. Senior tailback Jabari Scott has rushed for 1,119 yards while fellow senior Kevin Smith has 1,116 yards. Jones has 924 yards receiving and could become the first wide out since Kyle Smith in 2005 to go over the 1,00-yard plateau.
