Nearby attractions of Dhuturdaha: Malancha is a nearby destination just 15 kms

from Dhuturdaha. This small town has one of the biggest Fish Markets in West Bengal.

At Malancha you would see the mighty Icchamati River meeting the Vidyadhari River.

You can also stop over the bridge over Vidyadhari River and enjoy the sunset. This side

of the riverbank is dotted with brick kilns and their towering chimneys line up the

riverbank for miles – it’s an amazing sight. On the way to Dhuturdaha from Kolkata, you

would come across Ghusighata Lock gate, where few local canals meet – this is nice

01. Indian Botanic Garden, Shibpur, Howrah (more details)

The Indian Botanic Garden in Shibpur covers some 270 acres of land, located by the

Hugli River and is some 230 year old. This place is indeed a heaven for bird-watchers as

it houses a wide variety of bird species that also includes a small percent of water-bird

species as well. Birds found here include Stork-billed Kingfisher, Rufous Woodpecker,

Brown Hawk Owl, Bronzed Drongo, Black Bittern, Greenish and Yellow-browned Warbler,

Lineated Barbet, Booted Eagle and Black-naped Oriole. Beside, some rarest species of

birds like Black-capped Kingfisher, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Red-breasted Parakeet and

Eurasian Cuckoo can also be spotted here.

How to reach: The Indian Botanic Gardens is located in Shibpur, Howrah district with

Howrah Station being the nearest railway station. This particular place can be reached

by boarding a ferry service from Bichali Ghat in Metiabruz or by crossing the Vidyasagar

Setu as one of the exits of the bridge will lead to the garden.

Although most parts of the marshy land of Rajarhat have been taken over for

This is a tiny sanctuary of 17 acre and is housed in an old and deserted orchard with

grassland surrounding it. Wide number of bird species can be seen here including

Oriental Honey-buzzard, Slaty-legged Crake, Scaly Thrush, Eurasian Woodcock, Blue-

throated Flycatcher, Tickell’s Thrush, White-eyed Buzzard, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker,

Little Spiderhunter, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Large-billed Reed Warbler, Changeable

How to reach: Also known as Koyeler Bagan is located in South 24 Parganas, very close

to the Rathtala Bus stop. The sanctuary is some 10 km form Ruby General Hospital and

The Nalban Fishery Complex is a huge inter-connected water body that is under the

usage of commercial fishery. Good variety of bird species like Purple and Grey Heron,

5. Santragachi Jheel, Howrah (more details)

The Santragachi Jheel is some 13,75,000 square feet and becomes the home to some

4000 to 5000 water birds, especially during the winter months. Water hyacinth covers

most part of the water body with very less green cover. Species of birds like Northern

Pintail, Lesser Whistling-Ducks, Ferruginous Pochard, Gadwall, Falcated Duck, Comb

Duck and Baikal Teal can be found in good numbers in the Santragachi Lake. But the

Bengal Immunity, which is a Central government undertaking that had a factory here, at

one point of time.

7. IIM Joka area (more details)

There is an area right behind the Indian Institute of Management in Joka that is a good

breeding ground for birds like Cinnamon, Bengal Bushlark, Black and Yellow Bitterns,

breeding Black-breasted Weavers, Watercock, Black-shouldered Kite, Oriental Skylark,

White-eyed Buzzard, Purple Swamphen and Zitting Cisticola among others.

extremely exciting trip, with loads of fun and frolic. The quaint village of Routpara

located in the Arambagh subdivision of Hooghly district is such a destination, which can

Places to see in Routpara: Rotupara, better to term as a temple city of Bengal,

upholds the blend of the two architectural style of temples in Bengal – Ratna (pinnacle)

and Chala (sloping roof). The region is famous for housing five temples, three of which

pinnacles, though none of the pinnacles are in decent condition. The sites of the ruins of

architectures. This quaint village is situated 12 km north of Tarakeswar, famously

known as the temple town. The history of Dasghara can be traced back to the early

glimpses of regular life. It is said that this masterpiece is one of its kind in whole of West

Bengal. The temple premises also features an octagonal shaped Rasmancha, admired

with nine spires, narrow pillars and a square shaped Dolmancha.

You will also find an age-old Durga Dalan and the house of the Biswas family within a

short distance from the temple, which only carry a slight hint of its early glory. Apart

from the architectural attractions built by the Biswas family, Dasghara also treasures a

clock tower and an arched gateway. These two masterpieces were built by Bipin Krishna

Roy, a notable businessperson of the area. However, the hands of the clock tower have

become static. You can also visit the mansion of Bipin Krishna. He is also credited for

building a Shiv temple in the region.

Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, Sonarpur – 20 kms from Kolkata

Located within a driving distance from the pulsating metropolis of Kolkata, the

Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary is the haven of huge varieties of butterflies, birds, ferns,

epiphytes and orchids. The sanctuary is located to the west of the Netaji Subhas Road,

which connects Garia with Baruipur in the Rajpur area. It lies in close to the Ramkrishna

Mission Institute in Narendrapur.

Formerly known as “Kayaler Bagan,” the site was recognized as a sanctuary in the year

1982 and bestowed with the name of Narendrapur Wildlife Sanctuary on September 8,

2004.

However, since 2005, the sanctuary was finally named as Chintamani Kar Bird

Sanctuary after the renowned artist Chintamoni Kar, who has a major contribution in

providing “Koyeler Bagan,” the status of a wildlife sanctuary.

Some rare species include Tickell’s Thrush, Slaty-legged Crake, Scarlet-backed

wildlife, like civet cat, jungle cat, jackal, monitor lizard and others.

sandesh (sandesh mixture) besides being the birth place of the famous singer Bhola

Moira. But above all, it is the terracotta temples that are the biggest attractions of the

place. The temples of Guptipara boasts of a completely different style of architecture

like thatched hut-shaped structures with terracotta carvings, the unique aatchala

temple with colorful paintings and the ekratna or single pinnacled temples. Beside,

Banshberia or Bansberia is small town that is situated between Tribeni and Bandel, in

the Hooghly district of West Bengal. It is located at the Kalyani Bridge’s western end lies

on the Bandel-Katwa branch rail line. Banshberia falls under Mogra and Chinsurah police

Present Bansberia was one of the main villages of ancient Saptagram and was once the

commercial complex and main port of that area. The existence of the place dates back

to the period of Shah Jahan. An area including Bansberia was part of the Mughal Empire

legend that a fort was built by Raghab’s son after clearing a bamboo grove.

Places to see at Bansberia: The tourist attractions of Banshberia are the

Hangeshwari and Ananta Vasudeva temples comprising intricate terracotta works. The

five-storied Hangseshwari temple is built in a unique architectural style, comprising

thirteen lotus bud-shaped minars and inner layout following human anatomy. The

temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The construction of the temple was started by Raja

Nrisinhadeb Roy Mahasay and was completed by his wife, Rani Sankari in 1814.

The Ananta Vasudeva temple was built in the traditional ‘ekaratna’ style with an

octagonal tower, triple arched entrance and curved cornices. The temple is dedicated to

Lord Krishna and is famous for the terracotta works on the walls of the temple that

depicts love, war scenes, gods and glimpses of everyday life. It is situated in the temple

complex of Hangeshwari temple and was built in 1649 by Raja Rameshwar Datta, an

ardent follower of Vaishnavism. Its decorative scheme is similar to that of the terracotta

temples, situated in Bishnupur.

structure are the broken walls and fragments of arches.

Gupta Bridge or visit Bandel that is situated at a distance of four kilometers and offers a

number of tourist attractions.

How to reach Bansberia: You can reach Bansberia by availing trains that run on the

Howrah-Katwa rail line. Trains also ply on the Sealdah-Katwa rail line. From the station,

you can avail cycle-rickshaws in order to reach the temple complex. You can take NH 2

to reach Banshberia by road from Kolkata.

Best time to visit Banshberia: Any time of the year but rainy season is not

preferable.

hotels in Banshberia but there are cheap accommodation options in nearby Bandel.

Chandraketugarh, Barasat – 50 kms from

Kolkata

The archaeological site of Chandraketugarh is located beside the Bidyadhari River, in

the district of North 24 Parganas, at a distance of about 35 kilometres north-east of

Kolkata. It lies on the road to Haroa, at a distance of 1 kilometer from Berachampa. For

many years, this place has been excavated and relics of several periods unearthed such

as Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW) relics, evidences belonging to the period of

400 BC to 100 BC and relics belonging to Maurya period, Gupta period, Kushanas period

and late Gupta period. BOOK YOUR TRIP TO CHANDRAKETUGARH

A prayer hall of 45 sq km dating back to 700 to 600 BC and Kharosti script are some of

the other notable evidences. Some historians believe that Chandraketugarh and

adjoining areas is the place that was referred to as “Gangaridai” by the ancient Roman

and Greek writers. The place derived its name from the urban civilization

Chandraketugarh that flourished in this place for some six eras, under the rule of the

mythical King Chandraketu. The civilization existed from the pre-Mauryan period to the

Pala period.

Places to see at Chandraketugarh: The tourist attractions mainly comprises ancient

ruins such as the mythical ancient temple dedicated to characters like Khana and Mihir

and the Chandraketugarh Fort that is built by King Chandraketu. The site housing both

of these structures is called ‘Khanamihirer Dhipi.’ As per the Archaeological Survey of

India (ASI), the temple belonged to the period of 4th century BC to 12th century BC and

was part of the flourishing urban settlement, Chandraketugarh. The temple is

considered the most important archaeological structure of the region with only a flight

of stairs and the walls as the remnants of the building. The ruined four-feet thick walls

reveal the grandeur of the temple.

The other things found during the excavation of this temple are Buddha stupas and

images, decorative designs belonging to Pala period, Jataka stories coins, terracotta

sealing and plaques and many more.

The ruins of Chandraketgarh Fort were excavated in 1956-57 and the small field

situated in front of it provides an ideal spot to the tourists. Cast copper coins, silver

coins, coins of Gupta and Kushana period, different kinds of beads, terracotta plaques

and figurines of Sunga, Maurya, Kushana and Gupta periods and various other antique

pieces were found, during the excavation of this place.

Nearby attractions of Chandraketugarh: The other interesting structure nearby is

the legendary incomplete mosque that was built by Pir Gorachand and his followers in

Haroa. Historians believe that the mosque was built on the ruins of a Buddhist stupa,

which was built some 1300 years ago, during the time of Jesus Christ. A ‘darga’ of Pir

Gorachand is also situated at a distance of Haroa bus stand. You can also visit the Lal

Masjid by availing a cycle-van from the Haroa bus stop. A visit to the Bidyadhari Bridge

can be interesting for those wanting to avail a grand view of the river. While returning,

you can also visit the erstwhile home of the legendary Bengali actor Chobi Biswas at

Chandraketugarh.

Things to do in Chandraketugarh: You can explore the various archaeological

structures and the history and legends associated with them.

How to reach Chandraketugarh: Chandraketugarh is situated at a distance of about

50 kilometers from Kolkata and can be reached by road, via Barasat. The journey takes

around 2 hours. From Ultadanga and Espalanade, regular buses are available to

Barachampa. From there, you can easily reach Chandraketugarh.

Best time to visit Chandraketugarh: Any time of the year but try to avoid the rainy

season. Also, Basanti Puja is held with much fervor at Chandraketugarh.

Lodging facilities at Chandraketugarh: There are no such lodging facilities here. 

Chandraketugarh is appropriate for day trips from Kolkata.

Achipur, Budge Budge – 33 kms from Kolkata

Achipur is a Chinese colony and the place derived its name from the Chinese

businessman, Tong Achi who established a sugar mill on the banks of Hooghly River,

south of Budge Budge, during the time of Warren Hastings. A sugarcane plantation was

owned by him nearby that provided raw material to his mill. With the obliteration of the

sugar plantation and mill, the place was deserted by the Chinese community. BOOK

Places to see at Achipur: The main attraction of the place is the Chinese temple that

was built long ago, when the area was populated by Chinese people. At the complex’s

main entrance, a huge gate has been built recently. The temple is situated at a corner

of the complex and surrounded by a low wall and you might have to crouch to get inside

the temple, owing to the small entrance. The structure of the temple is that of a typical

Chinese temple and comprises lovely wood carvings. In this temple, Chinese deities,

Khudi and Khuda are worshiped.

The other important landmark is the grave of Tong Achi that overlooks the Hooghly. The

grave is semi-circular in shape and is red in color. It comprises of stands between two

kilns with Chinese inscriptions on them. The grave can be reached from the temple by

means of a shortcut, via two brick kilns.

Nearby attractions of Achipur: You can spend some time at the Budge Budge Ferry

Ghat watching the ships crossing the Ganges. The Ferry Ghat of Budge Budge is also

historically significant because Swami Vivekananda landed here when he returned from

his Chicago visit.

Things to do in Achipur: The place is considered a gateway for those interested in

the history of Chinese community. You can even opt for picnics in this place, enjoying

the sight of the Hooghly.

How to reach Achipur: Achipur is situated at a distance of 33 kilometers from Kolkata

and can be easily reached by bus. The buses of route No. 77 depart from Esplanade and

the journey takes around 2 hours. You need to get down at the bus stop called Boro

Battala and from there, walk 15 minutes to Chinamantala, which had the ancient

temple.

Year. During this period, the sleepy hamlet converts into a fairground and is inhabited
