5TH GRADE TEAMING• Students will only be switching

classes for 2 subject areas to minimize on transition time and allow for maximum instruction time. Therefore your child will only see 2 of the 4 fifth grade teachers.

• Mrs. Terry and Mrs. Manship will be one team and Mrs. Lim and Mrs. Hanes will be the other team.

Content Area Teachers

• All teachers will be instructing their own reading class within their homeroom.

• Mrs. Hanes and Mrs. Terry will be teaching math and writing for their teams.

• Mrs. Manship and Mrs. Lim will be teaching social studies and science for their teams.

CAN…… statements

• Your child will be given “I Can” statements throughout the school year for each subject area.

• “I CAN…” statements explain the core content in more simplified terms and allows the students to see their expectations for the school year.

• By the end of the school year, each student should be able to perform or apply the information in each statement.

Reading Instruction

• RTI (Response to Intervention) mandates that we have one hour of uninterrupted reading instruction per day.

• We will be using the Scott Foresman series to teach reading.

• Students will be ability grouped within their homerooms using GRADE and Baseline assessments.

• Spelling instruction will also be given during reading time.

Literature Circles

• Students will be participating in Literature Circles each quarter.

• They will be placed in groups based upon their reading ability.

• Students will be assigned daily readings and will complete specific jobs that they will discuss with their group members the following day.

• Students will be expected to take care of their assigned books and be responsible in completing their jobs.

READO Projects

• Students will complete 5 READO projects throughout the year.

• They will choose a different genre and project to do each time. Books must be on students reading level.

• Students will be given a due date for their project. Before that date they will be required to read the book, write a summary, and complete one of the listed projects.

• All summaries will be due a week before the project due date.

Math Instruction

• RTI also mandates that each 5th grade student receives 60 minutes of uninterrupted math instruction per day.

• Number computation, geometry and measurement, data and probability, and algebraic ideas are the four content strands that will be covered this year.

• Manipulatives, small group work, and text books will all be utilized during instruction.

• Pre-testing per unit is used to help determine individual needs.

• Please ask your child each night to review the concepts taught during the day. It is VERY IMPORTANT that math skills be practiced and mastered before moving on to the next concept.

• New math series. Students will be working in consumable workbooks throughout the year.

Writing Instruction

• On-demand writing instruction and working writing portfolios will be completed in this class.

-Informing or Persuading• Working writing portfolios

-Transactive, Personal, Literary, Reflective • Test-prep grammar skills will also be taught.

Social Studies Instruction

• American history, economics, government, and geography are the main concepts to cover in 5th grade social studies.

• We use the History Alive program, which is an interactive program that provides the students with hands-on experiences and ways to apply the knowledge that they learn.

• Each student will record the majority of their work in the Interactive Student Notebook. Any other work will be kept in their Social Studies folder.

• Please discuss with your child what they are learning in social studies weekly. Look at their ISN and question them about what we are learning in class. Parent evaluation sheets will come home before

each unit test.

Social Studies Notebooks

• The students’ ISN will be theirs all year long and it needs to be personalized so it is meaningful to them.

• We will decorate the social studies notebooks on the first day of class.

• Please have your child bring in pictures (that can be cut and glued to the notebook), stickers, magazine images, etc. that they can decorate their notebook with.

Science Instruction

• Science content covered this year will consist of physical, life, earth, and biological science.

• Students will be doing some science projects throughout the year to help the students understand the concepts more in-depth.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• MISSING WORK – Is the responsibility of the STUDENT!

• When absent from class, your child is responsible to see EACH TEACHER (INCLUDING THE SPECIAL AREA TEACHERS) upon return to school. Your child will ask each teacher for any missed work. The due date will be noted on the make-up sheet!

• You can keep up with your child’s missing work by checking teacherease on a regular basis.

• When your child is absent please send in a note to help prevent unexcused absences.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONContinued…

• LATE WORK – An assignment is considered late if not turned in when class sets are collected. LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED UP TO 5 DAYS LATE FOR 75% CREDIT.

• If a day or a lesson is missed for any reason, the CHILD is responsible for finding out any assignments given. Each child has the same amount of time that he/she missed to complete assignments, e.g. Absent 1 day = 1 day to make up work.

• Assignment Books – Your child will receive an assignment/agenda notebook. This book will be helpful in teaching responsibility and helping to keep YOU informed regarding class assignments, tests, projects, etc… The assignment book should be taken to each class and assignments should be recorded as they are given. It is highly recommended that YOU check your child’s assignment notebook each evening. It is not the teacher’s responsibility to ensure that the assignment book is filled out in each class.

• Assignments are written on the board at the beginning of the day. Students are given multiple opportunities to write in their agenda.

Discipline Log

• Discipline will be monitored and recorded with a discipline log.

• The binder will travel with the homeroom throughout the day during switches and special areas.

• Each conduct mark results in a 5 point deduction from their conduct grade.

• If a student receives 5 marks during a one week period they will be given detention.

• Students will also be rewarded for not receiving conduct marks.

• Strikes will be given when the class is not following school and/or classroom guidelines.

5th Grade Discipline Log • These abbreviations will be used to log

discipline. • UP - unprepared

• T – talking

• OT – off task

• HW – missing assignment

• DT – disrespect to teacher

• DS – disrespect to another student

• HP – horseplay

• R – unexcused restroom break

• IB – inappropriate behavior

• FD – not following directions

• NL – not listening

• CO – calling out

• O – other (list behavior at the bottom of the log)

Homework and Grading

• You should expect homework at least three nights a week.

• Students are given ample time in class to work on homework.

• Reading and spelling homework will be a nightly assignment.

• Grades will consist of summative assessments and projects.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONContinued…

Your child will have restroom breaks each day at regularly scheduled intervals. In addition, your child will be given 2 emergency hall passes a week to use for an extra restroom break or an opportunity to go buy pencils or paper; however, students will not be allowed to return to other classes to get books or other forgotten materials. These interruptions will interfere with classroom activities and learning.

• We will be using the TeacherEase website to communicate about grades and other important information.

• Please make sure that you write down your e-mail address on the open house sign in sheet so that you will be able to receive our online updates.

• We spend several hours each week updating and entering information into Teacherease. Please use this valuable resource when monitoring your child’s progress.

Parent Communication

• Any parent communication we send for signature should be returned the next school day.

• Check your e-mail or TeacherEase.com daily for updates and announcements.

• Daily TeacherEase announcements will be sent in one email for all subjects.

• Missing Work will be noted on Teacherease.
