    A 8. Tandem Learning

What is Tandem learning?Tandem learning is a reciprocal language learning scheme in which you are paired with a nativespeaker of the target language to learn together. That means that students with different nativelanguages teach each other. There is no financial cost involved and you can benefit regardless of yourlevel of language. You meet to study together, practice speaking, find out more about the culture, discuss language problems and support each other's learning. Tools like cell phones, emailing, andSkype can also support tandem learning.

How does it work? The imagination knows no limits when it comes to tandem learning: the tandem partners can work

through textbooks and exercise books, work through things from everyday life (e.g. newspaperarticles, product information, radio broadcasts), practice structured dialogues on certain themes orsimply have a chat with each other. Choosing the exercise method depends on the prior knowledgeand the learning objectives of the tandem learning partners.

What are the benefits of Tandem-Learning?Students, teachers and researchers who are planning a semester abroad can already be in contactwith their future host country before their stay has begun. They can begin to improve their languageskills and gain an insight into the culture, mentality and social environment of the country. Tandemlearning is also a convenient way to keep up your previously acquired language skills and to makecontact with native speakers.

How to apply? You have to register online on our e-learning platformBOKU learn.Follow the link and login with your

B 8. Illness or personal problems

    8. 1. In case of illness

A list of doctors in Vienna can be found in the phone book and atwww.praxisplan.at(search forlanguage skills is possible). In case you need a doctor you should try to find out in advance whetherhe/she is working together with the Viennese health insurance service (WienerGebietskrankenkasse).

In order to see the doctor, you either need a health insurance card or a European Health InsuranceCard (e.g. EHIC). This form should be accepted by most of the doctors. If you have an expired EHICcard you need to take it to the Viennese health service straight after your arrival. In case of illnessyou need to get a health certificate from the Viennese health service and give it to the doctor. If youhave insured yourself directly with the Viennese health insurance service you also need the get ahealth certificate there.
