Known as the “Gateway to the West”, Cumberland gained prominence during the nineteenth century as a transportation center. The City was the site of the beginning of the United States’ first National Road, the western terminus of the C&O Canal, and a center for the railroad industry. Amtrak’s Capitol Limited from Washington, DC still stops in Cumberland daily. Cumberland is a hub of recreation today. The Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath meet in this charming Victorian community, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Canal Place, Maryland’s first certified heritage area, is home to the Western Maryland Scenic Railway Station, a National Park Service Visitor Center and a number of shops and restaurants. From Canal Place, a short walk to Downtown Cumberland will introduce a pedestrian mall filled with specialty shops, boutiques, art galleries, eateries and spectacular architecture. This designated Main Street and Arts and Entertainment District hosts outdoor dining, music, entertainment, and various art & cultural events, including Cumberland Comes Alive! every Friday from June through August. The difference in scenery and wildlife habitat is astounding. Be sure to look for turtles hanging out along the Canal! New businesses and campgrounds that cater to trail visitors can be found along the way in the Canal Towns. Continue on to Oldtown, which is 18 miles from Cumberland on the towpath. This small town features a schoolhouse- turned-café called the Schoolhouse Kitchen, open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You’ll also find Lockhouse 70 (open weekends), and the home of Thomas Cresap, a feared 1800s border ruffian known as the “Maryland Monster.” The home is open by appointment. In 1954, efforts were made to save it from being converted to a parkway and in 1971 the Canal became a National Historic Park. C&O CANAL TOWPATH & OLDTOWN, MD

From the Great Allegheny Passage in Cumberland, venture onto the C&O Towpath for an entirely di�erent trail experience that follows the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and Potomac River for 184.5 miles to Washington D.C. The di�erence in scenery and wildlife habitat is astounding. Be sure to look for turtles hanging out along the Canal! New businesses and campgrounds that cater to trail visitors can be found along the way in the Canal Towns.

Continue on to Oldtown, which is 18 miles from Cumberland on the towpath.
