What are the rules* in this room?*I hesitate to call these rules because they are actually attitudes and ways of behaving.

• Be on time!• Be ready!• Be safe!• Be courteous!• Be heard!• Be hungry to learn!• Be civil!• Be original!

• I expect that as juniors in high school, you understand how to act in a classroom. If you are not able to follow these Eight Be-Attitudes, be prepared to experience consequences.

writing!• Grammar

Summer Reading Quiz on The Red Badge of Courage is TOMORROW, Tuesday, September 5th, an English testing day.

Page 8: Welcome to Honors English! Mrs. Weizer K124 4 th period

How will I be graded?• We’ll check out the phenomenal grading policy I have created for

you.• Highlights and Key Concepts:

– Homework will be checked randomly. If all homework assignments are completed, your grade will increase by 2%. If one to two assignments are missed, your grade will not be affected. If you miss more than two assignments, your grade will decrease by 1% for each missed assignment.

– Extra credit is not offered in this course. If you have failed to complete assigned work during the marking period, you will not have an opportunity to complete extra work at the end of the marking period.

– English testing days are B, D, F—even vocabulary quizzes have to be on testing days now—no more quiz every Friday

Back to the laptops…• Fill out the survey through the

website I directed you to earlier. • Your answers will give me plenty

of information about you!• The more I know about you, the

better I can teach you!• Once you are finished, hit

SUBMIT.• Close your laptop.

Page 10: Welcome to Honors English! Mrs. Weizer K124 4 th period

Group Time!• Gather underneath the chart paper that has your name.• Introduce yourselves. Pick a recorder.• Flip the paper over. The back is where you’ll be recording this

information.• Find a common letter in your names (first, last, or middle).• Come up with an adjective that describes your group. The

adjective MUST start with that common letter.– i.e. If I was working with Mrs. Lawler, Mr. Maurer, and Mr. Manero, we

could choose the letter “R” or even “E.” We might call ourselves Team Radical or Team Erudite.

• Once you’ve come up with your team name, write it at the top of your paper. Be as creative (or not) as you want.

Page 11: Welcome to Honors English! Mrs. Weizer K124 4 th period

We’re all…human?

• Once you have your group name, I want you to come up with as many common traits as you can. Think about what makes you all similar.

• Start with the obvious and then move towards the more obscure…if you can!

• Maybe you all have a size 14 shoe or were born on the 4th of July.

• Write your common traits on the top half of your paper, under your team name.

• Try to come up with at least four or five common traits.

Page 12: Welcome to Honors English! Mrs. Weizer K124 4 th period

Only one of us is . . . a celebrity?

• Then, brainstorm unique traits and qualities-- items that only apply to one person in the group. Find at least two unique qualities and strengths per person. Again, go beyond the obvious.

• Write these unique traits on the bottom half of the paper.

• Once all groups are finished, you will ALL share what you’ve found.
