Helloand

It is our pleasure to have the opportunity to teach your child this school year. We are very excited to be involved in one of the most important grades for your child. Kindergarten helps your child form both academic and social skills. An important ingredient for a successful year is an organized and efficient classroom. To ensure this, we have several guidelines and procedures you will see below. If you have any further questions or comments, we would be delighted to speak with you. Communication is the key, and our door is always open to you and your child. We look forward to a fun and successful year!

ArrivalTo ensure a positive start to each day, it is imperative to have your child arrive on time. Playground supervision begins at 8:10. Please do not drop off your child prior to 8:10. Note that only kinder

students may play on the playground, siblings are not allowed. The first bell rings at 8:25. All students should line up at this time. Teachers will then come to greet the class and escort them inside the

building. Goodbyes must take place on the playground to ease the transition. A kissing hand and a confident smile from you, the parent, will go a long way in providing your child a confident start to the day. Students who arrive after the second bell at 8:30 will be tardy and need to be checked in at the

office prior to coming to the classroom.

SuppliesThe school will provide each student with any

necessary supplies. Therefore, no supplies are needed from home except a backpack.

No rolling backpacks, please. Also note that special pencils, novelty erasers, etc provide a huge distraction

and will be sent home. Please label backpacks, lunch boxes, sweaters, and

jackets with your child’s name. And remember Velcro is a teacher’s best friend!

DonationsParents often ask if they can donate items to the classroom.

We would welcome many things! Please check with your teacher what the classroom’s needs are. Needs will also arise throughout

the year, so check your teacher’s wiki or newsletter, too.

VolunteersParent volunteers are a vital part of our school culture and

Kindergarten program. Fathers, as well as mothers, and other family members are encouraged to volunteer!

We love to have all kinds of volunteers in our classrooms. Daily academic rotations, weekly support classes, recess, lunch, prepping of materials, and special events provide different opportunities for you to volunteer. If you are interested in specializing your efforts

based on your area of expertise, we’d love to talk. We can put anyone to work, and we need your help!

You will need to provide the office a copy of a clear TB test, sign a statement, and attend a volunteer meeting before you join us in the classroom. Please be sure to sign in at the office and get a

volunteer sticker every time you come.

We look forward to working with you!

Now Serving:Snackand

Lunch

SnackEach student should bring a snack to eat every day for our snack time at 10:00. Healthy snacks are crucial to your child’s energy level and ability to concentrate. A drink to accompany the snack is also helpful. Please do not send candy, sweets, or soda for snack! Emergency snacks will be available, but you will need to replenish the emergency stash when used.

Please, do not rely on emergency snacks. It is your responsibility to make sure your child comes to school with a snack everyday, even when they are buying hot lunch. Please put your child’s snack in a separate container

from their lunch and label it “snack.”

Lunch & MilkLunch is scheduled at 12:15 daily. Your child can buy lunch on a day to day

basis or you may pack a lunch from home. To buy lunch at school, we recommend purchasing a meal card that will cover an entire semester.

Accounts can be set up online. Visit the school’s home page and click on My Nutri-Kids under Quick Links. Menus are also available on the school’s home page. If you choose to pay by cash, money is best transported to the lunch

line in a sealed envelope marked “lunch money” with your child’s name.Providing the exact amount, $3.25, is helpful.

Milk is provided with hot lunch although it can be purchased separately for

Please, please talk with your child about lunch and snack.Show them which container is their snack.

Explain what they will be doing for lunch: buying or bringing. Make sure they understand what they will be doing.

Many tears can be avoided this way.

Happy Birthday!Birthdays are celebrated differently in each classroom.

Please check with your teacher for specifics on celebrating.

SharingSharing is done a little differently in each class, but all kids get to share! This is the only appropriate time for children to bring toys to school. If a toy is seen at school at other times, it will be taken away for the rest of the day and be given

back to the parent.

Class MascotsAll classes have their own special mascot who will be visiting your home. This is one of the most beloved

activities from Kindergarten. You will find out about this

Emergency Kits Solana Highlands students are required to each have an emergency kit.

These are purchased by parents at the beginning of kindergarten, or when entering Solana Highlands for the first time.

These are kept at school and contain non-perishable food items. The kits are good for your duration at Solana Highlands!

You will receive more information from the office regarding emergency kit purchasing.

DismissalPlease be sure to complete the Student Information Form. It is imperative we know where your child will be going at the end of the day. Your child must be picked up by you or an older sibling. Please know we will NOT allow your child

to be picked up by another adult unless a signed note (by you) accompanies your child that day or the name of the adult is listed on your child’s emergency

card. You may also communicate this information via email.

While we encourage all appointments to be made outside the school day, if you need to pick up your child early for a doctor’s appointment, etc, you must go to the office and sign your child out. If students are on the playground, you will be

given a pass to give to the aide on duty before your child can be excused.

Rest MatsWe encourage all children to have one of our rest mats. We have chosen mats that fit within our storage cabinets. Rest time is every day after lunch for approximately 20

minutes. Children need this time to rest and relax their bodies after a hard morning’s work. Some children choose to quietly look at books or

read while resting.

HomeworkOur homework policy requires

students to read or be read to by parents daily. Your role as a parent

is to provide support and encouragement as your child begins

and/or continues to read. Remember it will happen when your

child is ready for it to happen. Other family projects or special

work will be sent home periodically throughout the year.

Weekly CommunicationIt is our green policy here at Solana Highlands for all information to be

sent via the internet. Parents must sign up online to begin receiving all the important information from school. Simply go to the school’s

homepage www.sbsd.k12.ca.us/SH/ and click on this:

Friday FoldersEvery Friday we will be sending home a folder with your child’s completed work from that week. From time to

time we will also enclose a class newsletter announcing upcoming events or special happenings. Please look through this folder with your child and praise, praise, praise all efforts!

Personal Standards for Solana HighlandsBe respectful, Make Good Decisions, Be a Problem Solver

Students need to follow the personal standards to be successful students and friends. As students demonstrate the standards,

they receive: tons of verbal praise, smiles, hugs, notes home, stickers, and self-satisfaction.

When students have a difficult time following the standards, their choices will be discussed with them, time may be missed from recess or other activity. If difficulties persist, parents will be

contacted and possibly the principal.

The first day of school is very exciting for all of us. We are very interested in your child’s success and happiness here at school, and to

that end we’ve made a list of suggestions that will help make your child’s first day of kindergarten a positive one.

1. A good night’s sleep.

2. A small, healthy snack for snack time. Please place this in a separate container/bag and label it “Snack.” You would be surprised by how many children get confused with snack and lunch.

3. Inform your child about his/her lunch. Will he/she:!!• BUY hot lunch (with exact money in a labeled envelope or using a lunch card/!! account?) Milk is included in a hot lunch.!!• BUY milk (with exact money in a labeled envelope or using a lunch card/account?)!!• BRING lunch from home. Please make sure it is labeled with your child’s name and 5. Bring your child to school on time,

definitely the first day and for the rest of his/her school career! We want he/she to start the day with everyone else and establish a good routine. The bell rings at 8:25 for students to line up. We will be waving goodbye to all parents at 8:30.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.
