Wedding Banns

BANNS ll. Katelyn Nelson &

Jacob Gonzales

I read an ar"cle in "Esquire" maga-

zine about graciousness. The ar"cle

began, "Graciousness looks easy,

but of course it is not. Do not mis-

take mere manners for gracious-

ness. Manners are rules. Helpful,

yes. But graciousness reflects a state

of being; it emanates from your in-

ventory of self" (Chiarella, Tom.

"How to be Gracious and Why,"

May 2013). I think that all mature

disciples of Jesus Christ should re-

flect a high level of graciousness in

their life. It lends evidence to the joy

of the Lord that resides in their

heart and the grace that fills their

being.

Being gracious is a characteris"c of

an Everyday Steward. Even in the

ordinary circumstances of the day,

good stewards display a giving de-

meanor that makes others take no-

"ce. Graciousness really makes a

difference when it is displayed in-

stead of anger, resentment, or ridi-

cule. No story explains this more

powerfully than the parable of the

prodigal son.

In Jesus' parable, the father has eve-

ry reason to share with his son his

hurt and dissa"sfac"on upon his re-

turning home a*er he wasted his

inheritance and disgraced his family.

Instead, his gracious response is

overwhelming, so much so that the

other son who has remained faithful

becomes disgruntled. A gracious

steward gives without asking why or

care for the cost. And with grace

comes mercy, not human jus"ce.

With true jus"ce, we would all

suffer. But with mercy, comes love

and the chance to begin again.

By developing graciousness in our

lives, we become instruments of

grace for the world around us. We

provide glimpses of heaven and the

love of the Father for his sons and

daughters. And the feasts we pre-

pare for those here on earth give

them a taste of the heavenly ban-

quet that awaits when we finally

come home.

CATECHUMENS &

CANDIDATES

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Throughout the season of Lent

special prayers are offered for

those who are preparing to enter

the Church at the Easter Vigil. If

one has never been bap"zed, that

person is called a catechumen. If

one has been bap"zed in another

Chris"an church e.g. Lutheran,

Methodist etc. then that person is

called a candidate. Even though

their goal is becoming a full mem-

ber of the Catholic Church their

ini"al status is different. The Cath-

olic Church honors the sacrament

of Bap"sm wherever it takes place

as long as it is done in the name of

the Father, the Son and the Holy

Spirit and water is used. Let's con-

"nue to keep our candidates Erica

Roach, Donna Zink and Jace Hall;

and our catechumens Lindsey Ken-

nedy, Ebanie and Jeseed Gamez in

our prayers.

CYCLE C MARCH 6, 2016 4th Sunday of Lent "The Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man wel-comes sinners and eats with them.'" Jesus crossed lines that weren't supposed to be crossed. He talked to women in public, touched the "unclean" to heal them, and chummed it up with tax collectors and sinners. This didn't make sense. It didn't fit into the standard categories. And so the religious leaders began to complain. In response to this, Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son. Through this story, he illustrated

that God loves all of his children even when they have not behaved perfectly. But more than this, the tale also deals with the resentment of the older son--the one who al-ways followed the law. Like the self-righteous Pharisees and scribes, the older brother complained. "All these years I served you," the son said, "and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends." But how does the fa-ther respond? "My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours." In other words, the older brother had no reason to complain or be angry. He already

enjoyed all good gifts. The father simply wanted him to rejoice that his brother had returned home. "He was lost and has been found." It's important for those of us who attend Mass regularly, participate in the sacraments, and serve in our parishes not to fall into the trap of being like the bitter older brother or the complaining Pharisees. We must welcome everyone in our midst with joy, not resentment or judgment. It can be easy to think that others don't deserve as much as we do, and to forget to be grate-ful for all that we have. But we are ALL called to "celebrate and re-joice" when the lost return home.
