RULE 1: OPT FOR SUBJECTS YOU ENJOY!
So, how do you select your subjects for
VCE Year 11?
VCE: Types of subjects
VCE UnitsVCE VET Units may be taken in VCE
or VCALSBA (School Based Apprenticeships)
may be taken in VCE or VCAL
Semester guide
Year 11 and 12 are divided into semesters
A Unit is completed in one semester Classics Unit 1: Semester 1 Yr 11 Classics Unit 2: Semester 2 Yr 11 Revolutions Unit 3: Semester 1 Yr 12 Revolutions Unit 4: Semester 2 Yr 12
Some VCE subjects: two year sequences
In order to do some subjects in Year 12, students MUST complete the pre-requisite subject (Unit 1/2) in Year 11 Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (some),
LOTE are two year sequential studies.
The VCE
Year 11Units 1 and 2 of 6 subjects = 12 unitscan include VET subjects or an SBAschool assessed tasks only- ‘S’ or ‘N’can change subjects after Semester 1consider prerequisites for some 3/4 subjects:
Sciences, Maths, LOTE, VET subjects
VCE Certificate continued…
Year 12Units 3 and 4, of 5 subjects = 10 unitsUnits 3 and 4 must be taken in sequenceUnits 3/4 English (any) must be includedSchool Assessed Coursework (SACs) and,External Assessment (Exam/s)

VCE subjects at PHSC
Approximately 72 VCE subjects on offer at PHSC campus over Yrs 11-12
Plus, 39 VET subjects available on and off campus
VCE Certificate and the ATAR
To be awarded the VCE students must: complete 16 units minimum including:
4 x 3/4 sequences 3 units of English (they can fail one unit of English),
but…
To receive an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank) they MUST have 3/4 English (full Yr 12 English).
The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank)
The calculations:All subjects scored out of 50 (raw score)Subject scores may be scaled (degree of
difficulty)The VCE aggregate is calculated from:
Top 4 subjects (including English) 10% of 5th and 6th (if done) subjects Out of total 210.
The ATAR is then a RANK from top student in the state (99.95) to bottom student.
But, what is a VET subject?
VCE Vocational Education and Training
Enables a secondary student to complete a nationally recognised training program within their senior school studies
Student qualifies for two certificates: a Certificate II or III in their chosen vocational
study and, the subject counts toward the VCE
How does VET work in School?
A VET program consists of two components:
1. VET is delivered by the student’s school, another school close by, or at a TAFE, usually on Wednesdays
2. Sometimes includes a Structured Work Placement (usually in holidays)
How does a VET subject contribute to VCE?
VET programs have Unit 1 - 4 sequences Completed Units become part of the
VCE/VCAL CertificateVET programs contribute to the ATAR
