We all know that Minneapolis and St. Paul are cultural Mecca’s, but there are a growing number of ultra-hip options located in the outskirts of the Twin Cities that are worth exploring. The suburbs aren’t just places where you’ll find strip mall after strip mall offering the same retailers. Many of the Twin Cities’ suburbs are becoming their own mini-cities with a vast array of theatre, dining and shopping experiences that will make you feel like you’re downtown.
From North to South, we’re giving you the highlights of some of the best options to explore in the burbs.

Hopkins Center for the Arts (HCA), which is owned by the City of Hopkins, houses two separate theatre performance spaces, a dance studio, an art gallery, an art classroom and other private spaces available to the community.
The 37,000 square-foot facility is located on Mainstreet in the heart of downtown Hopkins. HCA is the recipient of the James C. Howland Award for Urban Enrichment, which recognizes community efforts which have preserved and/or enriched the environmental quality of life in cities and towns, and an Arts Access Award for Accessible Performance Space by Very Special Arts Minnesota.
The arts center provides music, free exhibitions, art festivals, literary arts, classes in voice-over and other forms of artistic expression. Not to be missed is the Hopkins Art Festival which will be held July 9-10 2011 on Main Street Hopkins.
The center partners with Hopkins Public Schools and Stages Theatre Company, a leading provider of theatre arts programming, which serves more than 125,000 people
annually through performances, education, and school outreach programs.

The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes offers one-stop shopping and dining in an outdoor park setting.
You’ll find everything from chain stores such as Abercrombie, Banana Republic and Pottery Barn, to retailers such as Goodthings, a Minnesota-owned clothing and gift boutique, and Color Me Mine, where guests can turn unfinished pottery into their own unique works of art.
For dining options, there are casual chains to formal independents. Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano is a casual, family-friendly Italian eatery at reasonable price. It offers a variety of house-made and imported pastas, soups and salads, pizza, seafood steaks and desserts, as well as a full kids’ menu.

This eclectic mixed-use development opened in September 2009 and has given the city of St. Louis Park a modern-day face-lift. Visitors can find a varied mix of shopping, dining and entertainment options.

The Kozlak family has been in the restaurant since 1943 when they purchased Jax Café in Northeast Minneapolis. The Kozlak family took on a new challenge in 1977 when it purchased The Sandpiper Restaurant at an auction and turned it into Kozlak’s Royal Oak Restaurant. The restaurant is still managed and owned by the Kozlak family.

The Landing – Minnesota River Heritage Park, formerly Historic Murphy’s Landing, is an 88-acre living history museum depicting life in the Lower Minnesota River Valley from the 1840s–1890s. The Burnsville Performing Arts Center, which opened in the Heart of the City in January 2009, feels more like a downtown theatre than a suburban one. It features a 1,000-seat proscenium stage which hosts big name performers, an intimate black box theatre and an art gallery. There is additional space which can be rented for meetings and banquets.
Upcoming gallery events include Burnsville Visual Arts Society’s ArtFete, a members’ show consisting of artwork of all mediums from local emerging and professional artists, March 10 – April 16. Following that is Children’sArtFestival, April 28 – June 4, celebrating the artistic talent of youth in our community.
In the Black Box Theatre, Chameleon Theatre Circle Presents Marat/Sade, one of the most

While consumers used to pay a premium for new construction homes, today builders are scooping up deals on land prices and are passing that savings on to buyers, keeping building competitive with purchasing an older home, according to Mike DeVoe, president of Ryland Homes, Twin Cities.
“Builders have gotten extremely lean and the construction process is very streamlined now to compete with re-sale pricing,” says Wendy Danks, director of Marketing with the Builders Association of the Twin Cities.
With a streamlined construction process, along with great purchase prices for builders,
new construction housing is affordable for most buyers and is especially appealing to first-time homebuyers that don’t have an existing home to sell.
“Today you can purchase a single family home for the same price you would have paid for a townhouse, five years ago in a further out location,” says DeVoe.
In addition, interest rates are at an all-time historic low, making payments comparable to renting.
The surplus of inventory is resulting in creative incentives offered by builders seeking to
reduce older developments for an incredible value. While builders don’t have a lot of wiggle room on price, many are offering buyer’s other incentives like free staging on their existing home, TV’s or discounted countertops.
While financing has been more difficult, there are still many great programs available. The government is offering FHA loans with 5 percent down on purchases under $365,000. “This is a great program for first-time buyers with steady income,” says Danks.
The government is also offering substantial tax credits for new homeowners that build with energy efficient products such as solar

A roadblock for many potential buyers is selling an existing home in the current market. However, most national builders have financing options available and will work with buyers to get their existing home sold. Some custom home builders will purchase an existing home if the mortgage is not upside down, according to Danks.
“There is a lot of pent up demand for new housing as people have been holding off on purchasing due to the uncertainty of the economy. However, with a brighter outlook for the economy and the job market, the real estate market should improve,” says Danks.
“Nationally, new housing is flat, but we expect the Twin Cities market to see a slight increase in 2011 in residential new construction. There is a lot of pent-up demand,” says Danks. “People have been waiting for the job market to stabilize before making any changes in their housing. Yet, they’re still getting married, getting divorced, having babies, or sending the kids off to college, which means their current housing may not work very well,” she continues.
Many people have resisted buying a new home over the past few years because of the economy. For these homeowners, buying “up” makes a lot of financial sense. By purchasing a larger home at an undervalued price, buyers will be able to take advantage of appreciation on a higher valued property.
“What customers need to understand is that they can’t purchase a new home at today’s prices and expect to sell for 2005 prices. If they are trading up, it’s a good financial gain,” says DeVoe.
Some builders are even offering reassurance policies to protect your mortgage in the event of a job loss, giving buyers a lot more confidence about choosing to build a new home.
Builders today are also teaming up with top-notch realtors and lenders, therefore making the building process a streamlined experience for its customers.

The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul have a combined population of 3.5 million residents, making it the thirteenth largest metropolitan area in the nation. A blend of heartland America and sophistication offer residents a combination of small town charm and big city diversity.
Diversity in History:Called the “Dual Cities” in the 1870s, Minneapolis and St. Paul have common ground but unique origins. Mark Twain quipped, “St. Paul and Minneapolis were founded on the power of liquid, Minneapolis on the falls of St. Anthony, St. Paul on the power of whiskey. That’s why St. Paul was and remains today the political center.”
The latter part is good humor, but Twain had it right about the history. Originally both cities drew their economy from the Mississippi River, though in vastly different ways. On the east, St. Paul established a trading and
transportation gateway, while on the west, Minneapolis boomed as a lumbering and mill city.
St. Paul, the elder city, boasts a colorful past, thanks to a smart colonel and a French Canadian bootlegger. In 1805, Zebulon Pike struck a deal with Native American tribes for the territory. Shortly thereafter, Fort Snelling was built at the juncture of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, becoming a cultural and economic hub where Dakota, Ojibwa, and French Canadian traders converged.
A retired fur trader, infamous Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant, ran a popular tavern in Fountain Cave just south of current downtown St. Paul, giving impetus to the name “Pig’s Eye Landing.” In 1841, French missionary Father Lucien Galtier built St. Paul’s Chapel on the bluffs, pressing to change the name to St. Paul.
As steamboats thronged to Lambert’s Landing, St. Paul became “The Last City of the East.” Later railroad magnate James J. Hill built the Great Northern Railway system, headquartered in St Paul.

Meanwhile Minneapolis, “The First City of the West,” attracted a more Scandinavian population, primarily Lutheran, who harnessed the power of majestic Saint Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi. Initially, sawmills competed from both sides of the falls, establishing Minneapolis on the west, St. Anthony on the east. By 1872, Hill’s rail service connected Minneapolis and Chicago, and Minneapolis absorbed St. Anthony. The winning combination of water power and transit established the “Mill City” as one of the largest and most prosperous milling regions in the world.
Diversity in Demographics and Cultures:By the end of the nineteenth century, the most prominent ethnic groups in St. Paul were the Irish and Germans, although Swedish, Czech, Austro-Hungarian, and Polish immigrants eventually settled there as well. In 1838, three Irish soldiers, discharged from Fort Snelling, settled in St. Paul and were the first Irish immigrants in the state. In 1851, St. Paul held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade, a tradition that now draws at least 100,000 spectators. Well into the twentieth century, Irish Catholics comprised most of the mayors and city officials.
In Minneapolis, the Swedes eventually became the largest immigrated group in the city, with Norwegians second largest, and the Danish third. However, numerous other cultural groups settled there as well. The “Bohemian Flats” on the west bank of the Mississippi drew Slovaks, Poles, French Canadians, Germans and Irish. Jews from Russia, Poland, Lithuania, and Romania also made Minneapolis their home, and by 1880, a small Black population of 362 occupied the north side of the city and some of the south, eventually growing to about 4,000 by 1925. After World War II, especially during the last three decades, a significant influx of immigrants and refugees occurred from China, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Somalia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Though Mexican-Americans have tended to reside on St. Paul’s west side, recently many Latinos have chosen to live in Minneapolis.
Diversity in Arts, Culture, and Events:When it comes to the arts, both St. Paul and Minneapolis have flair, but each offers a different palette of choices.
St. Paul is known for its active grass roots arts community, fifteen museums (three considered world class), and more than
52,000 theater seats. In addition to 130 art galleries city-wide, the largest concentration of live/work space for studio artists in the country resides in a renovated warehouse district. and American cartoonist, Charles M. Schultz, author of the comic strip Peanuts. Current resident and famed author/story teller Garrison Keillor hosts the nationally-broadcasted radio show, APrairieHomeCompanion. The renowned St. Paul Chamber Orchestra performs more than 150 concerts per year. And thirteen festivals, including the Taste of Minnesota, the Irish Fair, Cinco de Mayo, and Grand Old Days, provide year-round entertainment.
The legendary St. Paul Winter Carnival, drawing about 350,000 visitors, celebrates winter, Minnesota style. Local business leaders collaborated for the first carnival in February, 1886, after a New York reporter described St. Paul as “another Siberia, unfit for human habitation in the winter.” Parades, contests, skiing, toboggan slides, and a spectacular, fourteen-story ice castle showcased ingenuity and hometown pride.
Minneapolis sets the stage for a broad spectrum of arts with 75 professional theaters, more than 275 arts organizations, and nearly 60 museums. Among the latter are the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, considered one of the top ten comprehensive art museums in the country, the nationally-acclaimed Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, and the Weisman Art Museum. A 98-member Minnesota Orchestra, based in upscale Orchestra Hall, performs nearly 200 programs annually, including live Friday night concerts for Minnesota Public Radio. Overlooking the Mississippi, the spectacular six-story Guthrie Theater houses three stages for internationally acclaimed productions. Local composer/performer Prince, one of the city’s most prominent progenies, studied at the Minnesota Dance Theatre and helped put First Avenue on the entertainment map with the 1984 film Purple Rain..
Minneapolis provides winter entertainment with Holidazzle Parades, lighting up Nicollet
Mall every Thursday through Sunday during the Thanksgiving-Christmas season. But the biggest festival in Minneapolis is the summer Aquatennial with more than 70 events, including milk carton boat races and a Torchlight Parade. In its 71st year, the Aquatennial features celebrity guests that have included Gene Autry, Vice President Richard Nixon, the Lone Ranger, Bob Barker, and millionaire Percy Ross.
Diversity in the Future:Minneapolis prides itself for its urbanite and progressive downtown, renovated hotels, renowned cuisine, and jazz clubs. Eight miles of glassed, indoor skyways connect the city’s hub. St. Paul, on the other hand, has preserved many of its spectacular landmarks, skillfully combining Victorian
and contemporary architecture. Numerous specialty shops offer a unique shopping venue. Both cities encourage ever-increasing downtown residency. And both have learned to capitalize on their mutual strengths.
By 2012 the new Central Corridor light rail system will connect the two downtowns. The annual Twin Cities Marathon, recognized as one of the most beautiful urban marathons in the country, will continue to display the extraordinary features of the Cities every October.
Residents will flock to the beaches in the summer, attend outdoor concerts, and fish off bridges. When fall arrives, with its dependable “Indian summer,” the lakes will become mirrors of oranges, yellows, and reds. And people will visit apple orchards for hayrides, cider tasting, and homemade apple bakery goods. Winter will paint frost-laden landscapes for skiers, skaters, and young snowman enthusiasts to enjoy. In the springtime, loons and geese will continue to return to a vast array of tulips and irises.
Twin Citians cheer for their hometown heroes and attend the Great Minnesota Get-Together, the State Fair, in droves. But, to their credit, if the past indicates the future, they will value their diversity, making this locale one of the best of all places to live.

quality education and each school offers a unique learning experience. It is important to consider all of the elements that contribute to a school’s overall effectiveness when picking your child’s school. When making educational choices it is important to consider general criteria and the type of school experience you want for your child, such as academic and arts programs, support services, age of school, location, available transportation and extracurricular opportunities. You might also consider your family values and other priorities important to you and your child.
Call, write, or visit the district administrative office for answers to questions such as:
• What is the district’s stated mission and goals?
• What is the student enrollment in the district; in each school; overall teacher/pupil ratio?
• What is the percentage of teachers with advanced degrees?
• What are some recent accomplishments of the district?
• What are some current issues facing the district?
• What is the level of community support for the school district?
• What is the level of student achievement in the district?
• What support services are available in the district?
Once you’ve narrowed your search to one or two districts, contact the individual schools where your children would attend. Request a parent handbook, student handbook, a school newsletter, and information about the school’s parent organizations. Ask if you and your child may visit the school. During your visit, walk through the school and determine if you and your child feel welcome. Do the staff and students appear to be happy and friendly? Does the school seem to be well organized and reflect a sense of purpose.
Overall, you should get a good sense of the school by just being in the building, by listening to students and teachers interact, and by asking lots of questions. And in the end, you should walk away feeling that this is the right educational choice for your child.
Public SchoolsIn Minnesota, public schools are organized into independent school districts. More than 50 districts serve the seven-county metropolitan area. In addition to providing traditional elementary, junior high and high school programs, each district can offer specialized instruction programs for various student-learning styles.
These programs include special education for students with disabilities, gifted and talented programs, and alternative high school programs for students who have left school
or do not feel comfortable in the traditional setting. Magnet schools, Open Enrollment, Post Secondary options and charter schools provide expanded learning opportunities in language, science and the arts.
In 1991, Minnesota was the first state to pass charter school legislation. The first charter school in the United States, City Academy, opened in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1992. There are 141 charter schools in operation, and half of them are located in or around the Twin Cities.
Charter schools often have a particular approach to education or focus for their programs that differentiate them from other schools. For example, some charter schools focus on experiential learning, or Core Knowledge, or project-based learning, or technology. Often, charter schools have smaller enrollments than neighboring district schools offering smaller class sizes and lower student to teacher ratios.

Private SchoolsApproximately 10 percent of Minnesota children attend private or independent K-12 schools. In addition to offering an education alternative, this hearty percentage reduces the tax strain of the public school system. The terminology associated with private schools can sometimes be confusing. Consider this glossary:
• Private schools - Schools that are run by an individual or agency other than a governmental entity. Private schools can be religious or secular.
• Independent schools - Generally, this term refers to schools that teach a particular religion or belief under an independent administration.
• Parochial schools - While not all Catholic schools are parochial, only Catholic parishes run parochial schools.
• Nonpublic schools - This term encompasses all private and independent schools and home schools. The state government uses this term to distinguish K-12 schools outside the public school system.

Despite the tuition and fees associated with private schools, private education has expanded and become within reach for students with disadvantaged socioeconomic status. Some of the thanks goes to the Minnesota Independent School Forum (MISF), a non-profit organization forged collectively by civic, education and business leaders in the community. The MISF currently serves 40 independent high schools, which serve nearly 15,000 students across Minnesota. Students at a MISF school have a nearly 100 percent graduation rate, and 80 percent of high school graduates go on to college. Approximately 65 percent of Minnesota high school graduates enroll in a post-secondary institution the fall following graduation. More than 30,000 bachelors and graduate degrees are awarded each year at the 178 public and private institutions in Minnesota.
The boom in accessible, reputable colleges and universities stemmed from a statewide effort in the 1970s to make post-secondary education available within a half-hour drive of 90 percent of the population. That goal was met, and as a result, the baby boomer generation flourished and contributed literate, informed and inventive individuals to the state’s population.

With Minnesota’s many lakes, rivers and beautiful forests, Mother Nature remains
the number one attraction in the Twin Cities and throughout the state. However, with the addition of the new Target Field and the new Gopher Stadium, spectator sports are running a close second.
There are over 12,000 lakes in Minnesota, with over 900 in the Metro area alone! Fishing and other water sports are found on the many lakes, rivers and streams throughout the area. There are also two waterfalls in Minneapolis: St. Anthony Falls, the only true fall on the entire length of the Mississippi; and Minnehaha Falls, which inspired Longfellow’s famed poem The Song ofHiawatha. In addition to its many lakes and forests, for fishing, hiking, water sports and hunting, Minnesota also offers an extensive network of hiking and bicycling trails. Despite the long winters, Minnesota has over 500 golf courses, depending on who is counting. And Minnesotans do love their golf. Perhaps it is an overreaction to winter, but in terms of per capita participation, Minnesota ranks #1 in the country.
The Twin Cities and Minnesota have everything to offer spectator fans. Major league professional sports include the Minnesota Vikings football, The Minnesota Vixens women’s pro football, Minnesota Twins baseball, Minnesota Timberwolves basketball, Minnesota Lynx women’s basketball, Minnesota Wild hockey and Minnesota Swarm lacrosse teams. The University of Minnesota, the main campus of which is located in Minneapolis, provides
major college sports. There are also minor league soccer and baseball teams in the Twin Cities.
Horse racing is featured at Canterbury Park in the southern metro in Shakopee. Skiers and snow boarders can choose from five ski areas in the Twin Cities area. If you’re looking for a family day outside, there are many apple orchards in the Twin Cities or a short drive away.

the entire state of Minnesota. Target Field features spectacular views of the Minneapolis skyline and superior sight lines from every seat.
The total seating is approximately 40,000 with nearly half of all seats in the lower bowl. Target Field features one of the closest seating bowls to the playing field in all of Major League Baseball. It has approximately 18,500 infield seats. Target Field features a 360-degree open main concourse, giving fans an uninterrupted view of the playing field. The concourses are twice as wide as those in the old Metrodome.
Target Field has also been given the title of the “greenest ballpark in America”. The U.S. Green Building Council gave Target Field their highest ever rating. The stadium was built with efficient lighting, a recycling program, and water saving features. The restroom faucets put air bubbles in the stream so less water comes out, and a water recycling system captures rain that’s later used to irrigate the field and wash the stadium. Burning garbage makes steam for radiant heaters, and even the scoreboard is energy friendly. The Minnesota State Legislature, the Ballpark Authority, and the Minnesota Twins Baseball Team together gave an extra $2.5 million to fund green construction.
TCF Bank Golden Gopher StadiumTCF Bank Stadium is your home for Big Ten Football. The process of building an on-campus stadium began in 2003 when the University of Minnesota began exploring their options for this new facility. Gopher fans’ dreams became a reality on January 23, 2007 when the Board of Regents approved the schematic design and budget for TCF Bank Stadium. In July 2007, construction officially began. The stadium is not just a home for Golden Gopher Football and the University of Minnesota Marching Band; it is the home of college football tradition for all the residents of Minnesota.
The 50,805 seat on-campus horseshoe style stadium was designed to support future expansion to seat up to 80,000 people. The video board in the east end zone is the third-largest video board in all of college football. The stadium’s cost totaled $288.5 million, of which the university paid 52% and the state of Minnesota the remaining 48%. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community agreed to donate $10 million for stadium construction, the largest gift Gopher athletics had ever received. The university will match an additional $2.5 million to create a $5 million endowment for scholarships for Native American and low-income students.

The easiest and most convenient way to travel around the Twin Cities is by
personal automobile via the extensive highway system. It includes interstate freeways, state highways, and county and city streets that will get you anywhere you would like to go.
The bus system is also quite extensive and will take you to most places within the Twin Cities with the exception of the far outer ring suburbs. If you are traveling to and from Minneapolis and the south metro area, then the light rail could be your ride. It travels every ten minutes from the Mall of America to downtown Minneapolis with many stops in-between.
Finally if you need to travel to out-state Minnesota or outside of Minnesota or the U.S., then the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport offers excellent service.

Cities Airport-Wold Chamberlain Field, the airport soon became home to Northwest Airways. Today, MSP is a hub for the nation’s largest airline, Delta. The airport also is served by every other major airline. From MSP, travelers can book daily nonstop flights to 142 domestic and 20 international destinations. Humphrey Terminal, which is the largest site for chartered flights in the country, is located a short distance from the Lindberg Terminal. Local airlines, such as Sun Country call the Humphrey Terminal home, along with AirTran Airways, Southwest Airlines and Iceland Air. By Bus or Light RailMetro Transit is one of the country’s largest transit systems, providing roughly 95 percent of the 73 million bus trips taken annually in the Twin Cities. Each weekday customers board Metro Transit buses an average of 200,000 times.
Metro Transit operates the Hiawatha light-rail line and 129 bus routes. Sixty-eight are local-service routes, 47 are express routes, and 14 are contract service routes. Metro Transit uses a fleet of 878 buses. The majority of the company’s fleet (818) are standard 40-foot buses while 140 are articulated buses and two are coach buses. All Metro Transit buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps and racks for bicycles. All trains feature step-free boarding, bicycle racks and luggage storage areas.
To ensure safety for customers and drivers, Metro Transit has its own police department. They have 144 Metropolitan Transit Police officers who work full-time and part-time to enforce laws pertaining to safety on buses, on trains and at bus stops and rail stations. Because light rail is new to this area, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
Light-rail trains travel in both directions on the tracks. Unlike freight trains, they are extremely fast and quiet. Carefully look both ways when crossing tracks, and cross at marked areas only. Walk bikes across the tracks to avoid getting tires stuck in the tracks.

Highways & BywaysThe average commute in the Twin Cities is about 25 minutes. The two major interstates that run through the Twin Cities are I-35, which splits into 35 East and 35 West, and I-94, which runs east to west. Interstate 494 and 694 provide a bypass for the Twin Cities by encircling the entire metro area.
Traffic Management Travelers in the Twin Cities Metro area have the opportunity to receive current traffic information through a variety of media. Information is available on the radio, Internet, telephone, and there is even an e-mail and paging service that sends out updates. Car Pooling and Toll LanesThe Twin Cities metro has many services such as high occupancy vehicle lanes, free or discounted parking and ramp meter bypasses. If you drive alone on I-35W or

Other Travel Options Many people are interested in keeping commuting costs low combined with the help of self propelled vehicles while preserving the environment and themselves. a snow emergency, which puts temporary restrictions on parking to allow the plows to get through. Those who don’t move their car will most likely be towed.

When the Mall of America was completed in 1992, it quickly became one of the
country’s leading tourist attractions. It is the nation’s largest indoor shopping mall. The Mall of America is located on the old site of Metropolitan Stadium, once home of the Minnesota Vikings football and Twins baseball teams. It is so huge that it could contain seven Yankee Stadiums! There are so many stores and businesses, that if you spent 10 minutes in each, it would take you 86 hours to visit them all. Its central hub is so large there is an amusement park including a roller coaster and many other rides. Underwater Adventures Aquarium is another major Mall of America attraction.
Both Minneapolis and Saint Paul downtown areas, not to be outdone by the Mall of America for indoor shopping, have both become essentially indoor cities, with extensive skyway networks. “Skyways” are second level pedestrian bridges connecting buildings. Seventy-two square blocks of downtown Minneapolis are connected by 62 skyways. Saint Paul has approximately half that many. What this means to the shopper is an indoor shopping and discovery adventure in two cities where much of the action is on
the second level, rather than street level as with most other cities. It’s like one huge gerbil paradise!
For shoppers who enjoy outdoor sidewalk shopping, there are also many beautiful and quaint shopping areas filled with antiques, gift and clothing shops, bookstores, espresso cafes and restaurants.

Arts and Culture
The Twin Cities is a cornucopia of arts and culture. There are five major art museums
including the newly-remodeled Walker Art Center and the giant Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. There are seven history museums, including the Mill City Museum, built within the ruins of the original General Mills flour mill. You will find several science museums, including the Bakken Museum of Electricity in Life, founded by Earl Bakken, inventor of the cardiac pacemaker, and the Science Museum of Minnesota. In addition, there is a continuing explosion of local art and art galleries in every corner of the Twin Cities and beyond.
The Twin Cities area is noted for its music recording and production ties, which include Grammy-winning artist Prince, and music producer Terry Lewis. Additionally, the Twin Cities is ranked second only to New York in total theater seats per capita, and features 130 art galleries, 20 classical music groups, 15 museums and 10 dance companies.
In 1963, shortly after Sir Tyrone Guthrie established his famed Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, it was noted by area farmers that the wheat in their fields produced greater yields; and their lowing cattle, snorting swine and clucking hens hit stunning harmonic variations. Young farm boys and girls danced through meadows like butterflies ballerinas. Migratory birds refused to leave in autumn.
The Irish-born Sir Tyrone, whose reputation was that of the greatest theater director in
the world, weary of the growing commercial demands of Broadway (musicals), and passionate about his own theatrical ideas, envisioned a repertory theater somewhere in the heartland of America. Minneapolis landed the plum.
Whether it is music, theater, ballet, comedy or opera, you will find it all here. During an average Twin Cities’ week-end you can choose between 29 plays, 6 dance performances, 8 pop music concerts, 2 jazz concerts, 3 major art exhibits, 24 gallery shows, five comedy acts.
For Minneapolis, “Broadway” is Hennepin Avenue, and “Off Broadway” is, well, Off Hennepin, which may be anywhere in the Metro area. Theater clusters include the West Bank in Minneapolis and The St. Paul Warehouse District. However, there are many other theaters scattered about the far-flung cultural universe of the Twin Cities.
