Numbers of Interest:
Numbers do not tell us everything. Nor are they the final answer. But we can learn from what we see and what we can measure.
Our prayer is that this box will constantly show a growing church.

WELCOME VISITORS!WELCOME VISITORS!
We are thankful you are with us today as we worship our God and Savior. Our prayer is that you will encounter Him today.
A nursery for small children is available in the east hall off the lobby.
What will you experience at Westview?
Praise through song. It is the tradition of our heritage to sing a cappella (without instruments) as we encourage everyone to be involved in uplifting praise.
We value the Bible. You will hear God’s Word read and all sermons will give the utmost respect and priority to Scripture.
We share the Lord’s Supper every week remembering Christ’s sacrifice that provides us forgiveness as we celebrate our salvation through Him.
We do not expect our guests to give financially to our work. We depend on the generous and godly giving of all Westview members to provide the funds needed to implement God’s plans for this church.
We invite you to stay for Bible classes following our worship time. We hope you have been blessed today!

Our God, He Is Alive
Is there a “Christian” Sabbath? #13
Commentary from a common Terry
Stop. That is what the Hebrew word for Sabbath means. It is the word Sabat and it means to stop or cease from what one is doing. When God “rested” on the seventh day in Genesis one, it was not because He was tired or worn out from all that creation work. It meant that He stopped what He was doing. So when God gave the Jews a commandment to “keep the Sabbath day holy” in Exodus 20 and reiterated it in Deuteronomy 5, He was telling them to “stop” what they normally do. This was not only to rest physically, but to remove one’s self from the typi-cal day’s demands. They were to even make sure the servants and animals rested. Their time with God on that day was not to be intruded upon by the profane – the things of the world. Stop. That’s the intent of the Sab-bath. In Hebrews 4:9, the writer said that believers enter a Sabbath rest. At least ten times in the first eleven vers-es of Hebrews 4 the writer stresses the “rest” God has made available to His children in the new covenant. But what is that rest? Is it heaven? Is it a day each week in the Christian age like it was in the Law of Moses age? Is it Sunday? What is it? If we ignore why the Hebrews writer wrote all this, considering the teaching of the first three chapters of the book, we are simply not practicing good Bible study methods. It is tempt-ing to grab that verse and extrapolate (remember that word?) a conclusion from it because we want that conclu-sion. It’s what Biblical academicians call eisegesis. Eisegesis is when the reader places his or her own assump-tion or agenda into the text being stud-ied. It is a tainted study, then, from the start. Instead, we set our goal to study through exegesis. Exegesis is the Bib-lical study practice of allowing the text
to lead the reader to the conclusion intended by the scripture. This is a much more honorable handling of scripture. Now back to the “Sabbath rest” of Hebrews 4:9. The writer has spent three chapters establishing one domi-nant principle. Jesus is superior. He is superior in every way when compared to the old Law of Moses. His audience was retreating to the old law, abandon-ing Jesus and the gospel truth of his sacrifice in the process. He is our Apostle. He is our High Priest. (Both found in 3:1) In the first two chapters, the writer stresses that Jesus is superi-or to angels. Why is this important? The old Law of Moses was given through angels. He’s superior to the method of deliverance. In every way he is superior. So why, then, are they going back to an inferior, replaced system? Why are they depending on their own works, their own actions, and their own effort before depending on Jesus and the grace that comes through the mag-nificent final sacrifice of the cross? There is certainly no rest in that deci-sion. In fact, it becomes even more burdensome to approach God through that philosophy. It is then that the writer stresses the Sabbath rest available to the be-liever. The practices of the old Law have stopped. You can rest from such labors. That, I believe, is the exegetical conclusion about the Sabbath rest in Hebrews 4. He is assuring his readers they can stop, through Jesus, such practices. They can rest from such labors. But I’m not finished – there’s more next week.

Kirkendalls with us next week
We will host Daniel & Brooke Kirkendall and their two children next weekend, the 19th—22nd
as we discuss the possibility of them serving Westview as our family minister. Currently they
work with the church in Lagrange, Georgia. We know you are praying diligently about this
entire process. We will combine our two Sunday morning classes next week and meet in the
fellowship room. Daniel will be teaching the class. We trust God will guide us to the right
family and the right family to us.
Congratulations to Dustin &
Angannette Smith on the birth of
their new baby girl, Stella Kahlia.
She was born last Thursday,
May 11th, and weighed 7 lbs. 10
oz. and was 20.5 inches long. Also,
congratulations to Aimie Floyd, the
proud aunt! Continue to pray for
Dustin, Angannette, Sterling, &
Carter as they bond with Stella and
look toward finalizing the adoption
in the coming month.
VBS Volunteers Needed!
Our hope is to host our annual VBS on June
12-16, four weeks from tomorrow. We are in
need of help as we have several spots to fill.
We are asking you to pray about your possible
involvement in this effort. It does take some
work, but it is also a chance to sow God’s seed
in young lives and then allow God to develop
their growth. If you have already determined
that you will not be involved, please reconsider.
For more information, check with Cameron
Rutz, Terry, or one of the Elders. We appreciate
your help and are counting on several commit-
ments over the next week. Thank you.
TRC Baby Bottle Campaign begins today!
The Resource Center for Pregnancy & Personal Health’s annual Baby Bottle Campaign begins
today. Please take a baby bottle from the lobby and fill it with your loose change, cash, or check
(made out to TRC). This is a VITAL fundraise for the center. They are doing incredible work in
our community. Leave filled bottles on Whitney’s desk. We need ALL bottles returned by June 18th
(Father’s Day) - even if they are empty or only partially filled. If you’d like more information on what
TRC does, please talk to Whitney. Thank you for supporting such a wonderful ministry!
