  • Welcome!Is Leonard Bernstein’s Candide an opera or is it a piece of music theatre? As we celebrate the centennial of the composer’s birth we can certainly agree—no matter what we call it—that Candide is a great work. It is also a great challenge to produce and a great vehicle to feature the large and talented group of young performers in the Bob Cole Conservatory Opera Institute.

    It has been a pleasure to have Eli Villanueva with us again as our guest Stage Director. His imagination, humor, and generosity have made this not only a learning experience but a happy working process for all of us.

    It has been a pleasure to work with the faculty and students in Theatre Arts and we are grateful to department chairs Jeff Janisheski and Johannes Müller Stosch for supporting this collaboration.

    The Opera Institute has grown significantly in recent years and we, like Candide, have nothing but optimistic ideas for our future …

  • CandideThe opera Candide is based upon the novel by Voltaire, Candide, or Optimism published in 1759. It ridicules the philosophy that "All is for the Best in the Best of All Possible Worlds." It portrays the hero Candide’s dissatisfaction when he reaches the utopian Eldorado and it ends in a mood of modest, yet confident optimism. The book was publicly burned in Geneva, prohibited in Paris, and put on the Vatican index of prohibited books. It went through edition after edition. The original Broadway production of Bernstein’s Candide opened at the Martin Beck Theater in New York on December 1, 1956 to mixed reviews and closed the following February. Bernstein revised the work several times, including a version for Scottish opera in 1989, before his death in 1990. There are five versions of Candide available for performance; we present today what is known as the ‘National Theatre Version’ revised and first performed in April, 1999 at the Olivier Theatre, London.

    SynopsisCandide, a Westphalian youth, believes fervently in the optimistic philosophy of his tutor, Pangloss, that everything happens for the best. Candide plunges headlong into travel and an endless series of disasters, including the apparent death of the woman he loves, Cunegonde, and the execution of Pangloss himself in the Spanish Inquisition. His travels take him to the New World in the company of a long-suffering Old Woman, and the miraculously saved Cunegonde, to the fabled land of Eldorado. Once back home in Westphalia Candide finally repudiates Pangloss’s philosophy and resolves to build a good, honest life for himself and his companions.

    Performer BiographiesMadeleine Summer Adragna (Ensemble) is a soprano studying with Shigemi Matsumoto. She has sung the following roles in operatic scenes: Magda from La Rondine, Contessa Almaviva from Le nozze di Figaro, Jenny Smith from Rise and Fall of Mahagonny, La Ciesca from Gianni Schicchi, and Elettra from Idomeneo.

    Melina Summer Adragna (Ensemble) is a transfer student in the vocal studio of Shigemi Matsumoto. She began her studies at Pasadena City College, where she performed the role of Marcellina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. She has performed in opera scenes as the Countess from Le nozze di Figaro, as Cio-Cio-san from Madama Butterfly, First Lady from Die Zauberflöte and Donna Anna from Don Giovanni. Melina is an active member of LA Opera College Advisory Committee and The Donald Brinegar Singers.

    Harlee Balajadia (Vanderdendur cover) is pursuing two Bachelor of Music Degrees—one in Voice Performance and the other in Choral / Vocal Education. Harlee studies with Timothy MacDougall. He sang in the ensemble of the Opera Institute’s production of The Bartered Bride and sings in the Bob Cole Chamber Choir, under the direction of Dr. Talberg, and Pacific Standard Time, under the direction of Christine Guter. After completing his undergraduate degree, Harlee will complete his teaching credential here at CSULB.

  • Cesar Ballardo (Governor, Baron, Don Issacar, Ensemble) is a sophomore studying with Shigemi Matsumoto. He recently was featured in the BCCM Opera Scenes as Tamino from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. He has also performed the roles of Don Giovanni in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, the Major General in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and Count Almaviva from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in the El Camino College Opera Scenes. He graduated with an Associate Degree in Vocal Performance from El Camino where he studied with Vicki Muto and Anthony Moreno.

    Michaela Marie Blanchard (Paquette) will graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance this May and is an alumna of the Classical Voice Conservatory at the Orange County School of the Arts. She will perform as mezzo soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in the BCCM’s 2018 Celebrating Music. Her solo recital, "The Nature of Love," will be produced by the Blanchard family and friends on Michaela’s twenty-third birthday, May 12th, 2018. Michaela is a student of Tim MacDougall and a member of the award-winning BCCM Chamber Choir. Michaela has worked with notable conductors such as James Conlon in the War Requiem as a part of Britten 100/LA: A Celebration, and Andreas Mitisek in the American premier of The Perfect American by Phillip Glass. She has sung for Grant Gershon, Eric Whitacre, Jake Runestad, Roberta Alexander, Julia Migenes, Delores Ziegler, and Ben Makino in masterclass settings. Michaela is grateful for the support of her family and mentors, and the many opportunities she has had as a student at the BCCM.

    Emily Booth (Ensemble) is a sophomore vocal performance major studying in the studio of Shigemi Matsumoto. This is her very first operatic appearance and she looks forward to more in the future.

    Emily Bosetti (Cunegonde) is a student of Shigemi Matsumoto in her fourth year as a vocal performance major. Her first role was in 2016 with the BCCM Opera Institute as Esmeralda in Smetana's The Bartered Bride. In 2017, she performed the role of La Comtesse in Chérubin with the Opera Institute, sang in the Long Beach Opera chorus of Philip Glass’ The Perfect American, and performed the role of Pepík in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at the Miami Music Festival. In Miami, Emily also sang the role of Konstanze in a scene from Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Notable prior opera scene roles include The Countess from Le nozze di Figaro, Fiordiligi from Così fan tutte, Donna Anna from Don Giovanni, Marie from La fille du regiment, and Frasquita from Carmen. In 2017, Emily was chosen to represent the Choral/Vocal/Opera department in the BCCM Showcase held at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. She looks forward to being featured as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Celebrating Music 2018.

    John Carroll (Maximilian, Grand Inquisitor, King of Bavaria, Ensemble) is in the voice studio of Dr. Katharin Rundus. Last semester he studied in Italy and performed with the opera repertory group Opera at St. Mark’s. His favorite past roles include Le Baron in BCCM’s Cherubin, Guy Masterson in Guys and Dolls at Long Beach Playhouse, and Amiens in As You Like It at the New Swan Shakespeare Festival. He hopes you enjoy Bernstein’s helter-skelter adaptation of Voltaire’s picaresque novel.

    Tim Cervenka (Governor, Baron, Don Issacar, Inquisitor, Ensemble) is a junior studying with John Buffett. He is bass-baritone pursuing a double major in Vocal Performance and Music Education. Timothy made his Long Beach debut in 2016 in the production of the musical RENT by Jonathan Larson, and has participated in the Opera Institute’s Masterpieces program, performing as Marco in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi. He plans to pursue further studies and a career in performance, wherever it takes him.

    Isaiah Chacon (Ensemble, Cacambo cover) is a first-year student, majoring in vocal performance and music education. Hailing from El Monte, he came to Long Beach in the fall of 2017. Isaiah is a student of Dr. Steven Kronauer and is proud for this to be his debut opera production.

    Candelaria Dangerfield (Ensemble) is a junior and a student of Katharin Rundus. She has performed the roles of Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Zerlina and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Michaela in Carmen, Elena in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, Crobyle in Thaïs, and Marguerite in Cendrillon.

    Charles Egger (James, the Anabaptist, Ensemble) is a vocal performance major who performed in the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors with Redlands opera company. Charles has also performed in the Bob Cole Conservatory Opera Scenes as Papageno in a scene from The Magic Flute. He studies with Timothy MacDougall and has previously studied with Rita Stevens and Ariel Estebez.

    Nathan Fennacy (Cacambo, Captain, Ensemble) is a freshman who studies with Tim MacDougall and is pursuing a double major in Music Education and Vocal Performance. This will be his debut opera performance at CSULB, but he has had plenty of musical theater experience. He sings in the University Choir, Cantus, Video Game Choir, and Choral Scholars.

  • Holly Freiberg (Dutch Minister, Ensemble) is a first-year transfer student studying with Dr. Katharin Rundus. She is also a member of the Bob Cole Chamber Choir. Previously she studied at Riverside City College in the studio of John Byun and sang in the RCC Chamber Choir, where she competed in the Spittal International Choral Competition in Austria and participated in the Asian-Pacific Festival in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. At RCC she was the recipient of the President’s Honor Recital Scholarship in 2015 and 2016. In her short time at BCCM she has been featured in multiple scenes as Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro and is excited to make her full operatic debut in Candide.

    Natalie Gonzalez (Ensemble) is a sophomore majoring in Vocal Performance. She began classical lessons last year, studying with John Buffett. This is her first year participating in an opera production, and her first year in the Bob Cole Chamber Choir. She has also participated in BCCM’s second vocal jazz group, Jazz and Tonic. Previous musical theatre experience includes her role as the Doo-wop girl in the musical, Little Shop of Horrors.

    Brandon Guzman (Maximilian, Grand Inquisitor, King of Bavaria, Ensemble) is a Vocal Performance major and a student of Aram Barsamian. Brandon has been a member of the Bob Cole Chamber Choir and the Opera Institute for the past three years. He’s very excited to play the role of Maximilian in this production of Candide and hopes to do it again. Brandon is also highly anticipating attending the Professional Choral Institute in Aspen, Colorado this August.

    Saane Halaholo (Cunegonde) is in her fourth year at the BCCM, studying with Dr. Katharin Rundus. Her first onstage experience as a child was with the Polynesian dance group, Te Vaka o Baha. She has been performing ever since. She is a recipient of the four-year Pritchard Opera Scholarship, and has also received the Howard Still Memorial Scholarship, the Fine Arts Affiliates Scholarship, and the Presser Foundation Scholarship. This is her fourth year in both the Bob Cole Chamber Choir and the Opera Institute. Last year she sang Nina in the Opera Institute’s production of Chérubin, as well as the role of the Widow in Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah. Saane recently returned from a semester abroad in Florence, Italy, where she furthered her studies in her Italian minor and also interned at St. Mark’s Opera, Florence. In the internship, she performed as a zingarella in Carmen, a supernumerary in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and in concerts of opera arias, duets, and Neopolitan love songs. Saane works as a staff singer at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove. She looks forward to participating in the Young Artist program at SongFest this summer.

    Caroline Hyatt (Ensemble) is a junior vocal performance major and a student of John Buffett. When she transferred to the BCCM in Fall 2017, she performed in the Opera Masterpieces program as Marguerite from Faust, Gretel from Hänsel und Gretel, and Emmie from Albert Herring.

    Berkley Kielhack (Candide) is a first-year transfer student in the studio of Shigemi Matsumoto. Last fall, he performed in opera masterpieces under the direction of Suzan Hanson in roles such as Gherardo from Gianni Schicchi, The Mayor from Albert Herring, and a chorus member in Cenerentola. This is Berkley’s first major role in an Opera Institute production.

    Ryan King (Voltaire, Pangloss, Martin) is a graduate student studying with Shigemi Matsumoto. He has performed numerous operatic roles at the BCCM as well as during his undergraduate years at the University of North Dakota, including Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, Pandolfe in Cendrillon, and L’hotelier in Chérubin.

    Kaylee Lackman (Old Woman, Baroness) is a second-year graduate student studying with Tim MacDougall and a recipient of the Prichard Voice Scholarship. Kaylee holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of North Dakota. While there, she appeared as Public Opinion in Orpheus in the Underworld, Veronica in Bizet’s Doctor Miracle, and in scenes from Albert Herring, Così fan tutte, and Die Fledermaus. She has also appeared as the alto soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Händel’s Messiah. At BCCM she sang the role of Dinah in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, the Baroness in Chérubin, and in scenes from Carmen, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Sir John in Love.

    Steven Leyton (Inquisitor, Ensemble) is currently a first-year choral music education student who has studied with Tammy Flanders. He is currently participating in the University Choir under the direction of Dr. Joshua Palkki and is looking forward to a great collegiate career at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music.

    Jimmy Lopez (Vanderdendur, Ensemble) is a sophomore studying vocal performance in Brian Farrell’s studio. This is Jimmy’s first opera performance at the BCCM. He hopes to perform in many more operas, and one day make a career through his passion for singing.

    Vincent Loza (Corporal, Inquisitor) is a sophomore studying Vocal Performance and Music Education in Brian Farrell’s studio. Candide is his first full-length production, and he is excited to sing with such a wonderful cast.

  • Nancy Morgan (Ensemble) is a freshman vocal performance major in the studio of Marian Bodnar. She is from LA and has performed outside of Long Beach in productions of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. She is very excited to be in her first full opera production at BCCM. Last semester she performed in opera scenes, featured in Die Zauberflöte and Trouble in Tahiti. Nancy is a member of the Bob Cole Chamber Choir and is proud and excited to be working with such talented musicians.

    Niko Murakami (Ensemble) is a junior vocal performance major and a student of Shigemi Matsumoto. This is her third year with the BCCM Opera Institute. This past fall, Niko appeared in Opera Scenes as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro under the direction of Eli Villanueva and Brian Farrell.

    Thomas Murphy O’Hara (Candide) is in zirs third year at the BCCM, in the vocal studio of Tim MacDougall. Thomas appeared most recently in Opera Masterpieces last semester, where ze performed excerpts from tenor roles such as Albert Herring, and Rinuccio from Gianni Schicchi. Other favorite roles have included Captain Ricardo in Chérubin, Vašek in The Bartered Bride, and Ariel in The Tempest.

    Kelsey Reynolds (Paquette) is a senior in the vocal performance program and a student of Shigemi Matsumoto. She has sung in groups such as University Choir, '49er Chorus, Women’s Chorus, and opera scenes. This is her first year in the opera program and she is excited to debut her role in Candide as Paquette.

    Malek Sammour (Voltaire, Pangloss, Martin) is a senior and studies in the studio of Timothy MacDougall. He is currently in the Bob Cole Chamber Choir, and has sung in the CSULB University Choir and the CSULB vocal jazz ensemble Jazz and Tonic. Malek has been studying in the Opera Institute for four years, and has been in productions such as The Magic Flute and L’Elisir d’amore. Other musical ventures include playing bass in the pit of CSULB’s production of Tick, Tick, Boom, and playing in the OC-based rock band, The Semiotics. Malek will participate in the 2018 Songfest Young Artist Program at the Colburn School this summer, as well as participate in the 2018 Seraphic Fire Professional Choral Institute at the Aspen Summer Music Festival.

    Rosalyn Sexton (Ensemble) is currently a first-year vocal performance major and a student of Brian Farrell. She grew up in Rancho Cucamonga and came to Long Beach last fall. This is her first production at the Bob Cole Conservatory.

    Pauline Tamale (Old Woman, Baroness) a native of the Kingdom of Tonga, is a senior studying in the studio of Shigemi Matsumoto and a recipient of the Pritchard Opera Scholarship. Pauline made her operatic debut in 2017 as Mrs. Patrick De Rocher in the South Florida premier of Heggie's Dead Man Walking at the Miami Music Festival Opera Apprentice Program. She also performed songs of Jake Heggie in the Tribute to Jake Heggie concert at The Betsy-South Beach Hotel in South Miami. With the BCCM Opera Institute, Pauline performed in the chorus of The Bartered Bride, and Chérubin. She has done scenes programs, as Carmen from Carmen, Tisbe from La Cenerentola, Martha from Faust, Lucretia from The Rape of Lucretia, Dido from Dido and Aeneas, Second Lady from Die Zauberflöte, and Dorabella from Così fan tutte. She also performed in the Chorus of The Perfect American by Philip Glass with the Long Beach Opera. Pauline appeared as soloist in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with the South Bay Orchestra at the Marsee Auditorium in Torrance and in Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Bob Cole Conservatory Symphony Orchestra.

    Abigail Wyatt (Ensemble) soprano, is a senior and a student of Marian Bodnar. She previously studied with Maria Lazarova. She has played Susanna and the Countess in scenes from Le nozze di Figaro.

    Production Team BiographiesDavid Anglin (vocal coach, Associate Director of Opera & Vocal Studies) joined the BCCM faculty in 2005 as Associate Director of Opera and Vocal Studies. His responsibilities include running the Opera Institute, the Diction and Repertoire curriculum as well as seminars in History & Musicology. As a member of the Keyboard faculty at UC, Santa Barbara Dr. Anglin and his colleagues introduced and developed a new Keyboard Collaborative Arts degree program. He was an adjunct member of the Vocal Arts Faculty at USC prior to which he spent four years in Australia as Opera Coordinator at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In Sydney, he and his colleagues initiated the "Encounters Program," a professional training program with artists from Opera Australia. David has worked for Santa Fe Opera and Los Angeles Opera as a translator and coach and for San Francisco Opera as coach and assistant conductor in the Merola Program. He has prepared and accompanied young singers in masterclasses with Roberta Alexander, Dolora Zajick, Frederica von Stade, Cheryl Studer, Warren Jones and Larissa Gergieva among others. Concert engagements include

  • recitals of Russian and Operatic repertoire with Vladimir Chernov and Mlada Khudoley. David received undergraduate degrees in Music History and piano from the Marseille Conservatoire National and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He holds an MFA degree in Performance Practice from UCLA and a DMA in Keyboard Collaborative Arts from the USC Thornton School of Music. David spent the Fall of 2017 in Florence, Italy teaching courses in Music, Visual Arts, and History at the American Institute for Foreign Studies as part of the CSULB semester abroad program.

    Brian Farrell (coach, repetiteur) currently holds the position of Music Director and Conductor of Repertory Opera Company of Los Angeles, which produces four operas per season. He is also on the music faculty of the BCCM. In 2000 he held the position of Assistant Conductor with LA Opera where he worked with Placido Domingo, Carol Vaness, and Rodney Gilfry, among many others. Praised for his “powerful and moving” solo performances and “imaginative and sensitive” accompaniment, Mr. Farrell has performed with such artists as violinist Chao-Liang Lin, cellists Fred Sherry and James Kreger, and pianist Samuel Sanders. He has also collaborated in extensive recital performances with tenor, Robert White. Mr. Farrell studied vocal technique intensively for six years with Fred Carama during which time he also earned a Pre-Medical degree specializing in organic chemistry, physics, anatomy, and physiology. He has been teaching and coaching a full studio of opera singers in Los Angeles since 1999 and in New York City for the five years before that. Mr. Farrell is a native of Pennsylvania and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School where he studied piano with Jerome Lowenthal, opera with Diane Richardson, vocal technique with Beverly Johnson and Edward Zambara, and vocal accompanying with the late Samuel Sanders.

    Guk-Hui Han (coach, repetiteur) enjoys a career as a performer, collaborative pianist, and vocal coach that has taken her across the globe, including premieres in Los Angeles and piano, art song, and opera festivals in Europe, Asia, and North America. Dr. Han has attended such prestigious summer festivals as the Fall Island Vocal Art Seminar, Miami Music Festival, Professional Pianist Program at Songfest, Colburn School of Music, Franz-Schubert Institut, and the Aspen Music Festival. During these years, she worked alongside such luminaries as Elly Ameling, Roger Vignoles, Martin Katz, Jake Heggie, Graham Johnson, Helmut Deutsch, and Julius Drake. Dr. Han has had extensive experiences as a collaborative pianist. In 2013, she was one of only two pianists in America invited to perform in the final round of the prestigious Wigmore Hall Song Competition, London, England. Since 2014, she has served as staff pianist at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music where she works with ensembles such as the Opera Institute, Chamber Choir, and University Choir, and coaches singers and instrumentalists. Guk-Hui received her BM in Piano Performance from Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea, her MM in Collaborative Piano from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and a DMA in Keyboard Collaborative Arts from USC Thornton School of Music. She has studied with teachers including Alan L. Smith, Kenneth Griffiths and Lydia Eunsuk Yu.

    Claire V. Mezzetta (Assistant Costume Designer) is a graduate of UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of Arts, with a BA in Drama, emphasis on Costume Design. While obtaining her education she has worked at Knott’s Berry Farm Wardrobe Department, International City Theatre (Around the World in 80 Days, Master Class, Let’s Misbehave, and Flyin’ West), LiveNation’s Fox Riverside Performing Arts Center, and as a freelancer. After graduating, Claire has worked with Long Beach Opera (The Consul), SAS Entertainment Group, Cypress College Theatre’s Costume Department, and continues at LiveNation’s Fox Riverside Theatre as Head of Wardrobe. Additionally, Claire has made forays into the film industry working on two feature films (Gangster Land and All About Nina), along with a few short films. This is Claire’s second time with the BCCM Opera Institute as she was with us for Chérubin as Assistant Costume Designer; and third time working with the wonderful A. Jeffrey Schoenberg. Claire has been sewing professionally for ten years; she gets pure joy from seeing the magic of a piece of square fabric transform into a beautiful garment right before her eyes.

    Yee Eun Nam (Set & Video Designer) is a scenic and projection designer for theater, opera, and all forms of live performance. She finished her second season with the Miami Summer Music Festival designing for the Opera Institute and the Wagner Institute. Her recent design credits include projection design for Turn of the Screw with DC public Opera; projection design for Three Decembers with Opera Fayetteville; set and projection design for Single Black Female directed by Shirley Jo Finney at Crossroads Theatre Company; projection design for A Mexican Trilogy: An American Story and scenic and projection design for La Olla, both directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela at LATC. Yee Eun is a recipient of the Gilbert Cates Award and the Cirque du Soleil Fellowship Award. She recently received her M.F.A. in Theater Design from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Entertainment Media. Yee Eun designed our production of Massenet’s Chérubin last spring.

    Ioannis Protopapas (Conductor, 8pm) is from Sitia, on the Island of Crete. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece. While there, he directed performances with the Ionian University Orchestra and Ionian University Contemporary Music Ensemble. He is currently completing his master’s degree in orchestral conducting as a student of Johannes Müller Stosch. Ioannis is the graduate assistant conductor for the Bob Cole Conservatory Symphony, the teaching assistant for the Opera Orchestra, and was recently named a

  • Conducting Fellow for the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. He is also coaching and working with the BCCM Opera Institute. Ioannis is a recipient of the prestigious Onassis Foundation Scholarship and is a Bob Cole Scholar. Last year he received the Gerondelis Foundation Scholarship and in 2014, he won third prize in the International Conducting masterclass and competition with the Duna Symphony Orchestra and Michael Dittrich in Budapest, Hungary. He has attended both orchestral and choral conducting seminars and masterclasses with Andre Thomas, Michalis Economou, Andre van Der Merwe, Basilio Astulez, Miltos Logiadis, Doris Lang Kosloff, and Norbert Baxa.

    A. Jeffrey Schoenberg (Costume Designer) has been designing costumes for L. A. area theaters for 35 years. He is delighted to return to the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, having designed last year’s Chérubin. His most recent designs have been As You Like It for the Antaeus Theater Company; Resolving Hedda for the Victory Theater; and The History of Comedy (abridged) at the Falcon Theater. He designed last season’s Cloud 9 for the Antaeus Company, (for which he received an L. A. Drama Critics Circle Award, A Stage Raw Award, and an Ovation nomination), where he has designed more than a dozen productions including The Wedding Band, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, The Malcontent (Ovation winner), King Lear, and Tonight at 8:30. Other recent designs include Kiss Me Kate for Cabrillo Music Theater; Always … Patsy Cline for Sierra Madre Playhouse; Hamlet for L. A. Women’s Shakespeare; Elmina’s Kitchen for Lower Depths Theatre; Bach at Leipzig, for the Odyssey Theater; The Dead, The Time of Your Life, and Threepenny Opera for the Open Fist Theater; and the NoHo Arts Center’s Elizabeth Rex (Ovation winner). For the Colony Theater he has designed almost 40 productions, including Dames at Sea, Side Show (Ovation winner), The Ladies of the Camellias, and The Laramie Project. He has been the resident designer for Musical Theatre Guild for the past 7 years. Jeffrey is the owner and designer for AJS Costumes, Renaissance Dancewear, and Mr. Alan Jeffries Fine Gentlemen’s Apparel.

    Jonathan Talberg (Conductor, 2pm) Recipient of the President’s Award from the California Music Educators Association honoring “extraordinary accomplishments in music education,” Dr. Jonathan Talberg serves as Director of Choral, Vocal, and Opera Studies at the Bob Cole Conservatory, where he is conductor of the international award-winning Bob Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir. Recent career highlights include leading the Chamber Choir to first place awards at the Spittal International Choir Festival in 2017 and the “Choir of the World” competition in Wales in 2016. Additionally, he and the choir have performed with groups as diverse as the Kronos Quartet, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Pacific Symphony and the Rolling Stones. Candide is the first full opera he has conducted at CSULB. Of the many hats he wears each day, the one he is most proud of is mentor to the next generation of vocal musicians. Alumni of the Bob Cole Conservatory Choral Studies program are teaching at elementary, middle and high schools, churches, community colleges and four-year universities throughout the country. Scores of alumni are professional singers—in opera, musical theater, choirs, church music, jazz, and pop. Recent Bob Cole Conservatory graduates are currently earning—or have finished—their doctorates in choral music at the University of Michigan, the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, the University of Kentucky, the University of Iowa, and the University of Southern California.

    Eli Villanueva (Director) is resident stage director for Los Angeles Opera’s acclaimed Education and Community Engagement. As a teacher, he offers invaluable insights and perspective to young professionals and budding performers and helps them discover ways of becoming more engaging performers. His energetic style of directing and teaching is well suited to work with young performers all over the country in various youth workshops and choirs. As stage director of LA Opera’s In-School Opera programs, Mr. Villanueva inspires and directs more than 1,500 students annually in original productions. Along with Music Director James Conlon, Mr. Villanueva’s ongoing role as stage director for LA Opera’s Off Grand Cathedral Project helps to bring together annually more than 400 professional and volunteer musicians, actors and dancers to perform staged works like Benjamin Britten’s Noah’s Flood, Jack Perla’s Jonah And The Whale and Villanueva’s own work, Festival Play Of Daniel. Eli has directed the Bob Cole Conservatory’s Opera Masterpieces as well as our production of Chérubin last spring.

    Szu-Yun Wang (Assistant Lighting Designer) originally from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, received her BFA in theatre arts from National Sun Yat-sen University, and is currently pursuing her MFA degree in theatrical lighting design at CSULB.     David Zahacewski (Lighting Designer), originally from Connecticut, recently moved to California where he is pursuing his MFA in theatrical lighting design at CSULB. He received his BA in theatrical design at Western Connecticut State University. His experience in theatrical design revolves heavily around musicals based in the Connecticut and New York area. He has recently worked at Central City Opera, as an assistant to David Jacques, and is excited to begin his career in operatic design.
