DOMINGO VI DO TEMPO COMUM

EVANGELHO DE MARCOS 1, 40-45 Naquele tempo, veio ter com Jesus um leproso. Prostrou-se de joelhos e suplicou-lhe: “Se quiseres, podes curar-me”. Jesus, compadecido, estendeu a mão, tocou-lhe e disse: “Quero; fica limpo”. No mesmo instante o deixou a lepra e ele ficou limpo. Advertindo-o severamente, despediu-o com esta ordem: Não digas nada a ninguém, mas vai mostrar-te ao sacerdote e oferece pela tua cura o que Moisés ordenou, para lhes servir de testemunho. Ele, porém, logo que partiu, começou a apregoar e a divulgar o que acontecera, e assim, Jesus já não podia entrar abertamente em nenhuma cidade. Ficava fora, em lugares desertos, e vinham ter com Ele de toda a parte. No século primeiro, as pessoas viviam com o temor aos demónios ou aos espíritos impuros, aos quais se atribuíam a maioria das doenças. No evangelho deste domingo, como no domingo passado, Jesus demonstra seu poder sobre o mal ao curar um leproso. Para os judeus o leproso era um pecador público e qualquer pessoa que o tocasse tornava-se impuro. Ignorando essas crenças, Jesus toca no leproso e o cura. Este gesto demonstra não somente o seu poder de curar, mas também sua compaixão e solidariedade com os que sofrem. Na primeira leitura deste domingo, encontramos no livro do Levítico o que a lei de Moisés mandava com relação aos leprosos. Eles eram considerados impuros e deveriam morar à parte das outras pessoas. Jesus rompe com essa lei e não somente se aproxima do leproso, mas o toca. O leproso não exige de Jesus a sua cura, mas coloca-se à disposição de Jesus. Ele está disposto a aceitar a vontade de Deus na sua vida. Muito mais que cura, o sentido original do pedido do leproso era fum pedido de purificação. Ele era considerado um pecador, um excluído da sociedade, um pária. Ele quer voltar a fazer parte da sociedade e Jesus o purifica. O leproso deverá ir mostrar-se ao sacerdote e oferecer o sacrifício prescrito pela lei de Moisés. Somente assim poderá ele voltar a conviver com as outras pessoas na sociedade. Havia muita divisão na comunidade cristã de Corinto, na Grécia. Havia uma disputa entre as pessoas. Cada um queria ser mais importantes do que o outro. O apóstolo Paulo coloca-se como um exemplo para a comunidade cristã de Corinto. Ele procura agradar a toda a gente, não buscando o próprio interesse. Não podemos ser motivo de escândalo para as outras pessoas.

2021 BRICK PATHWAY

Thanks to the generosity of so many parishioners, we have more than 800 bricks inscribed with

your family names & memories! They start at the statue of St. Michael the Archangel, and go up

to the Blessed Mother Statue. This Winter we will continue taking orders and contributions

($100/per brick) toward the pathway, as an ongoing fund raiser at Resurrection. Our Holy Father

Pope Frances has placed such a strong emphasis on the church always present and active, in

helping any and all persons in need. This we will do ever more effectively as the people of God

building up the Kingdom of Heaven in Farmingville! May the Lord bless you and your family as we

celebrate these many years of Resurrection!

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His mercy endures forever.” “The Lord is with me to help

me.” (Psalm 118: 1,7). The creative goodness of God’s love fills the world. He calls me to take

part in that goodness. He calls me to be a mother. This is such a high calling, such an important

role, such a blessing, that he also extended it to the most blessed of women, the Virgin Mary.

Sometimes blessings are hard to receive because they require self-denial. Sometimes in or-

der to be blessed, I have to do difficult things. But God is with me and will help me. Being al-

lowed to bring a baby into the world is a great gift from God. He will help me through any trou-

ble that may come.

Prayer

Father in haven, you call me to increase the love and goodness in the world by giving birth to a

new creation, a baby made in your image. You call me to the noble role of motherhood. For this I

thank and praise you. I trust in your help. I pray through Christ, the Baby born to Mary in Bethle-

GROW AS A DISCIPLE | PRAY, STUDY, ENGAGE, SERVE

While leprosy as found in Biblical times is now rare and very treatable, it is not hard to imagine the tragic consequences it had on those who were affected. They suffered physically, but also socially and emotion-ally: Levitical priests declared lepers unclean, banishing them from the religious community. Jesus, as he did so often, would upend these conventions in his encounter with the leper in today’s Gospel. “Moved with pity,” Jesus healed him, telling him to return to the local priest for readmittance to the community. Jesus’ model of compassion for the man is meant for us to embody. Modern culture continues to stigma-tize people perceived as different – those suffering from depression and other mental illnesses, the homeless, perhaps those who struggle with cognitive disabilities – shunning them in different ways from full participation in community. To imitate Christ, as Paul alludes, is to have compassion for the needs of others – to “be moved with pity.” Let us pray for the grace to put on the mind and heart of Christ, and dignify the presence of all our brothers and sisters in our community.

GO EVANGELIZE PRAYER, INVITATION, WITNESS, ACCOMPANIMENT

I admit I was taken aback by today’s Old Testament reading: Not only were lepers banished from the religious community, but they had to announce themselves by crying out “Unclean, unclean!” Jesus changed all that. He healed the leper, encouraging him to return to the priest for readmittance. I am struck by how the leper approached Jesus. He did not demand a cure, but asked, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Although it is unlikely that any of us in the developed world will experience leprosy, we ourselves or people we know may carry inner struggles that have led to separation from the Church or a sense of isolation. In our humanity, we do not have the power to heal these maladies on our own. Instead, let us come to Jesus as the leper does, asking him, if he wills it, to heal us and our wounded world. Let us pray with confidence, knowing that Jesus in his compassion can and will make us clean and whole.

REFLECT Who are today’s lepers? What are the inner struggles or wounds that may keep us from fully participating in our parish com-munity or have left us estranged from members of our own family? Bring these before Jesus in your own words. Call a family member you have fallen out of touch with. Invite a person who has left the Church to lunch and listen with compassion.
