Good Afternoon everybody, My name is Ingrid Stokkeland and I work as a legal advisor at the University. I am going to briefly present academic conduct and misconduct at the UiS. Because of limited time I will focus on academic misconduct. You have to be aware that the consevenses if you get got in cheating is that you will get suspended from the University. Therefore, I recommand that you all pay attention to me. At the end of my presention I will show you a video wich will sum up the most important information.
General conduct at Norwegian universities

Attend all mandatory classesBe punctualMobile phones are considered very impolite in a classroom, turn them off, pleaseExams- mostly written (traditional and digital)Students are responsible for keeping themselves informed about shedules and regulations. Academic misconduct/cheating is not tolerates-severe penalties

There are some unwritten obvious rules that you are expected to follow. For example: ( nevn de som star på sliden) Written exam: most of the exam at UiS are written and digital. Remember that we require that you have your own laptop under the exam, and also in lectures. UiS as only a few PC that you can apply to borrow for exam. You are allowed to take the same exam three times If you´re not able to take the exam due to illness/sickness it is important that you submit a medical certificate or other documents for valid absences no later than five days after the examination. If you don’t submit valid documentation, the examinee will be registered as having made an attempt at takin the exam. To be entitled to resit an exam you have to submit valid documentation. Remember that you have to submit it within 5 days after the examination. Remember that withdrawal during the actual examination will be counted as an attempt. UiS takes academic misconduct/cheating very seriously and it will not be tolerated. It is a breach of trust in relation to the institution, to the school’s reputation, to fellow students as well. We expects that you as a student will learn academic and research integrity and will consciously apply this work ethic in all situations. Cheating to pass an exam or simply to obtain a better grade is a breach of this academic integrity thus penalties will be severe.
Examination regulations and guidelines

Examination schedule The date of the examination is announced on the StudentWeb and the date will be determined at least three weeks before the beginning of the examination period. Students are personally responsible for keeping themselves informed about changes in examination dates, time and place. Changes (time, venue) can occur until 3 weeks before the exam date! So you need to check the schedule to see that noen of the courses you are signed up for have colliding exams. If you find that some of your exams collide, please contact the exam office at your faculty. Examination regulations: You will find detailed information about exam regulations on this website.
Exam regulations and guidelines
8/16/2018
Guidelines: - You must be present 30 min before the exam starts
- ID ( no ID=no exam)
- -Mobil phones, iPod, iPAD or any other products withelectronic communication must be placed in designatedareas. Illegal aids during the exam- cheating

Presentasjonsnotater
We also have guidelines for you as a exam candidates. Here I have highlighted three of the most important. We expect and demand that you all read through these guidelines before each exam. Remember that if you have you phone in your pocket during the exam it will be considered as an illegal aid, although you didn´t use it. And to bring or have illegal aid during the exam is considered as cheating.
Academic misconduct
8/16/2018
Among other forms the following is considered as academicmisconduct.School exam:
- Having illegal aids available during the test.- - check the subject description- To make use of or attempt to make use of the illegal aids- Conversation or any other form of communication
between candidates during the exam
Brukernavn
Presentasjonsnotater
So, now Im going to explain to you what academic misconduct is when it comes to cheating during the exam and assignments. During school exams it is considered cheating to bring illegal aid to the exam/assessments such as notes, books, watches, mobile phones and other electronical devises etc. Your phone and other illegal aids must be put in your bags/purse and place the bags on the designated area in the exam room. It`s also not allowed to bring legal aid with incorporated illegal material such as notes, not approved calculators, personal organizers etc. If you are allowed to bring f. ex a dictinoary to the exam you have to check it before the exam starts to see if there is any incorporated text or loose notes in the dictionary. It is considered to be cheating if you make use of or attempt to make use of illegal aid. But it is not a criteria that you are caught using or attempting to use the illegal aid. It is actually not even a criteria that you had the intent to use the illegal material or even knew that you had the illegal material available during exam. You can be found guilty of gross negligence cheating without having the will or intent to cheat. So if you forget your notes inside your dictionary or your phone in your pocket it is considered cheating. All communication between the students during exam is cheating. When the exam starts do not in any way communicate with your fellow students. If you need a pen raise your hand and explain this to the invigilators. To be certain what illegal aid is allowed during your exams you have to check your subject description. Rememeber to do this before every exam. It is not certain that the same material is allowed on the next exam even though it was allowed on the first. -Every semester we have cases where students got caught cheating during exam because they have forgot to take their phone out of their pocket- eventhow it was switched of.
Academic misconduct
8/16/2018
Home exam/assignment- Presenting the work of others as one´s own- Quoting sources without using quotation marks, or other
methods to indicate that the text is quaotion- - Using sources without adequate reference- Unauthorised collaboration between exam candidates or
groups- Plagiarism control
Brukernavn
Presentasjonsnotater
During home exams and assignments it is considered to be cheating if you copy, produce or submit work that is the subject of a previous evaluation or entirely og partially someone elses work without declaring the sources. If you use internet articles, books, former handed in papers you have to refer to the source in the text and in the litterature index. When citation it is very important that you highlight the copied text or use quotation marks to let the reader know that this is citation. You also has to reference to the source in the text or with the use of footnotes. Every time you hand in an exam or assignment on the internet the text will automatically go through a plagiarism control. The plagiarism control also check the other students paper. Even though you try to rewrite or adjust the copied text the plagiarism control often will find the similarity.
Citations

Arrange with your supervisor which citation style to useBe consistent!Work with your bibliography while you are writing. Don´tleave it till the end.Attend classes on using sources and reference at thelibraryhttps://student.uis.no/examination

Ask your supervisor what citation style to use when writing an exam or assignment. They will help you to understand how to use footnotes and what to include of source information in the literature list. Be careful to include all references in your literature list and check that the information is correct. When using web-pages as sources print the source out for later documentation. Don’t wait until the end to write the sources you have used in your literature list. Then it is very easy that you forget. We have cases where students have been stressed and copied in a section from a source in there assignment. They were meaning to go back and adjust the text and reference to the source, but they forgot. Even though they did not have the intention to plagiarize they were found guilty of gross negligence cheating. I would higly recommand you to attend courses at our library about using sources and reference correctly. And don’t hesitate to contact your supervisor or library if you have any question about citations.
The student can also be suspended/excludes from the UiS, and
will be deprived of his/her right to sit for examinatons at other institutions in Norway

- I hope you all now have an understanding of what is considered to be cheating. But what are the consequenses when a student get caught cheating? In accordance to the University and University College law the actual exam or course will be annulled. The student will also be suspended for one or two semesters from the University. During this time the student can`t attend any classes or take any exams. In the period of suspension the student can`t take any courses or exam on any other University or University colleges in Norway. I want to remind you that the rules regarding academic misconduct applies not only for exams where you are given a grade, but also for mandatory assignments, labs, rapports and so on. The consequenses are just as severe when cheating during mandatory assignments as it is for exams where given a grade. Every year several international students gets suspended. For international students the consequences can be severe. Suspension can affect scholarships, student housing and residence permit. Additional consequences for International students is not taken into consideration in regards to the sanctions for academic misconduct.
