Welcoming the Legendary Willie Nelson

Toronto – Tuesday, February 12, 2013 ~ Kick off the 27th edition of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival with a special performance by Willie Nelson & Family at Massey Hall on Thursday, June 20, 2013. Tickets go on sale Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Massey Hall or by calling 416.872.4255. An icon in American popular culture and one of the greatest treasures in music, Willie Nelson is a living legend whose career has spanned more than six decades. With 2,500 songs in his nearly 300-album discography and multiple Grammy’s, American Music Awards and Country Music Awards under his belt, Nelson’s credentials are formidable. The prolific artist has sold more than 40 million records in the United States and is well known as an activist for his contributions to social causes. In 2004, his hit “On the Road Again” was ranked among the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone. In 1961, he wrote “Crazy,” which became a career-changing song for Patsy Cline. Nelson is also known for perhaps the most memorable version of “Always On My Mind” ever recorded. Nelson’s critical success in country music is largely due to his unique country sound, which fuses jazz, blues, pop, rock and folk. To celebrate his 80th birthday this year, Let’s Face The Music and Dance, a collaboration by Willie Nelson and Family, will be released on April 16.

STEVE MARTIN, MAVIS STAPLES, SHARON JONES, DR. JOHN,

DAVID SANBORN AND MORE AS PART OF THE 2013 TD TORONTO JAZZ FESTIVAL

Toronto - Tuesday, February 12, 2013 ~ The newly revitalized Nathan Phillips Square will once again play host to the TD Toronto Jazz Festival as it takes over from June 20 – June 29, 2013. Six marquee names were announced today as part of the Mainstage Series at Nathan Phillips Square, the hub of the Festival. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster or by calling 1.855.985.5000. Mavis Staples / Dr. John – Saturday, June 22 More than 60 years after she began singing with the groundbreaking family group The Staples Singers, Mavis Staples remains a tour de force in soul and gospel music. Known for creating the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement, Staples’ music today is still grounded in all that is soulful and righteous in American music. Often described as voodoofunk, Dr. John’s music is a unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, R&B, psychedelic rock and Creole roots. One of the all-time distinctive voices of New Orleans, Dr. John is celebrated as the living embodiment of that rich musical heritage. John McLaughlin & Fourth Dimension – Sunday, June 23 John McLaughlin, considered one of the greatest guitar players of all-time, has covered a wide musical swath over the last 40 years. As a pioneer of jazz-rock in the 1970s, he led fusion music’s first supergroup, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and would go on to help redefine flamenco music with a guitar trio that included Paco De Lucia and Al Di Meola. His resume includes pivotal gigs with Georgie Fame, Shakti, Tony Williams and a key role in Miles Davis’ groundbreaking electric ensemble. Bob James, David Sanborn featuring Steve Gadd – Tuesday, June 25 After more than 27 years since the release of Double Vision, two of contemporary jazz’s most seminal figures will reunite this summer for a new collaboration. Currently untitled, this project is a follow-up to their Grammy Award-winning hit that sold more than a million copies and spent 63 weeks on the Billboard charts. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue – Wednesday, June 26 After playing to a sold-out, standing-room-only crowd last summer, Trombone Shorty is back again for another powerhouse performance. With his brash brand of supafunkrock, a mash-up of jazz, funk and soul backed with hard-rock power chords and hip-hop beats, Trombone Shorty will be performing music off his new CD, to be released this spring.

The James Hunter Six / Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings – Thursday, June 27 Van Morrison once called British R&B and soul singer James Hunter “one of the best-kept secrets” in music. Fast-forwarding six years and two albums later, Hunter now has a Grammy nod, two Billboard Blues #1 hits, collaborations with some of the biggest names in the business (Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Willie Nelson, just to name a few) and widespread critical rave. His highly anticipated release Minute by Minute hits stores this February. Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings have almost singlehandedly revived soul and funk music. Their four critically acclaimed albums captured the essence of Motown and Stax Records in their heyday, gaining them a cult-like following. This nine-piece Brooklyn collective continues to electrify fans with their devotion to heartfelt soul music, incredible live shows and a relentless touring schedule. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell – Saturday, June 29 Comedian, actor, author, playwright and Grammy Award-winning banjoist Steve Martin will close out the 27th edition of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival when he takes centre stage with the Steep Canyon Rangers and special guest Edie Brickell. Featuring new music from their upcoming release Love Has Come For You (in stores April 23), it will be a night of laughter and music.

Turn up the jazz and explore the TD Toronto Jazz Festival as it plays nonstop for 10 days, from June 20 – June 29, 2013. Since its inception, the Festival has hosted over 26,000 artists, contributed over $460 million to the GTA economy, welcomed over 9 million people, and presented over 2,000 free public concerts. The Festival has drawn some of the biggest names in jazz over the years including internationally renowned artists such as Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Sonny Rollins, Ray Charles, Sun Ra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Harry Connick Jr., Etta James, Diana Krall, Pat Metheny, Jane Bunnett, Roy Hargrove, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, and many more. Responsible for the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Patrick Taylor serves as Executive Producer and CEO of Toronto Downtown Jazz. Since co-founding the Festival in 1987, Taylor has been Toronto’s primary jazz impresario and has produced other notable events that include the Unique Lives and Experiences Lecture Series and Massey Hall’s 100th Anniversary. A tireless promoter of jazz, Taylor is also actively involved with Jazz Festivals Canada and is a board member of the Ken Page Memorial Trust and the Sponsorship Marketing Council of Canada. A graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz program, Josh Grossman brings invaluable experience to his role as Artistic Director at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. He has previously held the same position at the Markham Jazz Festival and Toronto Jazz Orchestra, the latter of which he also founded and continues to serve. Grossman was the Performance Manager at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School for four years and has been an administrator, conductor and performer with numerous ensembles in the city.
