WeldCor “Gouge Wire” Description: WeldCor Gouge Wire is an arc cut wire designed to remove hardfacing or hardbanding deposits without air assist. For the Hardbanding Industry: WeldCor Gouge Wire was developed for operators to remove old hardbanding deposits from circumferential shaped parts including drill pipe tool joints to prepare for new welds, without the use of compressed air. The WeldCor Gouge Wire works best on round parts in the three o'clock or nine o'clock arc position where gravity pulls the molten puddle material off the part. WeldCor Gouge Wire offers very high metal removal rates and is an excellent choice for drilling tools, tool joints, and drill collars. Additional applications include using the WeldCor Gouge Wire to groove or reshape gyratory cones, and cement and coal rolls. Welding Parameters **Oscillated Band or Groove removal profile**

Diameter 1/16" Current DCRP Amperage 275 - 500 Voltage 35 - 40 Wire Extension 1-1/2" to 2" *The current settings of 290 to 350 amps / 35-40 volts are the optimum range for this wire.** Cut Characteristics Single Groove Arc voltage and amperage control the groove width, while travel speed controls depth. Wide Oscillated Oscillation (50 cpm) produces a flat cut ¾” to 1” inch wide. Carbon Steel Very clean -- light brushing Hardfacing Deposits Light soft scale -- remove with very light brushing Notice: The results reported are based upon testing of the product under controlled laboratory conditions. Actual use of the product may produce different results due to varying conditions. An example of such conditions would be material removal chemistry, environment, weldment design, fabrication methods, welding

procedure and service requirements. Thus the results are not guarantees for use in the field. The manufacturer disclaims any warranty of merchantability or fitness for

any particular purpose with respect to its products

WeldCor “Gouge Wire” Procedure: Worn Hard-Band Joints

** note** As the procedure is a metal removal process rather then a metal joining process, normal preheats

based on the parent material are not normally required.

*Make sure material that is to be removed is free from dirt, oils or other contaminants.*

Preheat: 75-100

0F (room temperature). This is to prevent any thermal shock to the parent material.

Post Cut Heat:

Refer to parent material maximum Post Weld temperature maximums.

Torch Position/Configuration:

Torch to be positioned in the vertical down position. The nozzle is to be removed

exposing the contact tip (as per dwg).

Wire Position:

The WeldCor Gouge Wire is positioned so that it touches the worn hard-banded

joint at the 3-O’clock or the 9-O’clock position and is pressing into the hard-

banded joint to within 1/16” of the desired depth that is to be removed (as per

dwg). Wire stick out is ~1 ½” – 2”.

Oscillation:

Oscillation to be the same width as hard-banding oscillation. This is normally at

~1” width.

Pipe Rotational Direction:

Rotational direction of pipe to be traveling into the Gouge Wire (as per dwg).

Pipe Rotational Speed:

Rotational speed is dependent on the diameter of pipe. Use hardbanding rotational speed for specific pipe

diameter as a general guideline.

Initial Gouging Welding Parameter Setup: (1/16” wire) Volts: 35

Amps: 330

Polarity DCRP

-Once the torch and oscillation have been engaged with the pipe rotating, as per the above settings, adjust the

Amp setting higher or lower on the welding machine so that the WeldCor Gouge Wire is cutting smoothly. Also

modify the pipe rotational speed if required.

-As the combined settings of the Amps, Volts, Oscillation and Rotational speed are all required for a proper cut

profile, it is essential that the final adjustments to these setting be done at the jobsite where the work is being

performed. Also affecting final adjustments to the setting is the thickness of each individual hardband to be

removed, thus affecting the rotational speed of the pipe.

-Once metal is removed, clean the area with a wire brush or grinding wheel as required. 2
