As we head into the middle of winter, energy comes to the

fore – summer, with its bright days and sweet smells seems to

launch you out of bed with a spring in your step and a sense

of being alive. Winter is more suited to lie-ins and cosying up

on the couch. So finding ways to up your energy is certainly

something to do in winter. Not to forget, of course, that

using less energy from an environmental perspective is vitally

important too. So, as you spend your days building your energy,

remember to switch the lights off to keep our country’s energy

expenditure balanced.

Everyone knows that a good work out actually increases your

vigour – even so, I’m going to fill up on good energy food before I make a foray into the frenetic

world of Zumba. I’m keen to try it, but must admit, I’m a little intimidated by the amount of zeal

it seems to require. Read our Move Well section to find out more about this exciting exercise that

will certainly keep you on your toes.

You may want to read up on ways to increase your energy naturally before you get physical,

though. We’ve outlined food that relates to your specific personality and how you can individually

increase your get-up-and-go stores, for life. Of course, nature offers the most incredible nutrients,

vitamins and minerals to assist in balancing, boosting and maintaining your body so you can get

through your days without feeling fatigued and down. Sometimes, too, a period of breaking down

is needed before you begin to build again – to this end, we offer you safe and effective ways to

detox so you can get rid of toxins in order to fill up again on natural vitality. And before you start

your day, a quick skin energy boost may well set you up for a more productive, energy-fuelled day

as well – read our Look Well section on tips for giving your skin the wakeup call it needs.

In Live Well, we delve into the world of finance – asking you questions you may not have thought

about before. We often advocate putting your money where your heart is, but how much control

do you have over that when you invest with a financial institution? It’s your energy and your work

that fuels the economy.

Our special feature on earth’s energy will also encourage you to ditch those shoes and spend time

with nature, allowing the power of the earth to restore, balance and heal your body. Here’s wishing

you an energy filled July month.

Yours in energetic wellness

FAIRTRADE COFFEE WEEK 2013Wake Up South Africa22 - 28 JULY 2013Fairtrade Label South Africa calls all shoppers

to WAKE UP to a new coffee experience this

July – one that will not only tantalise your

taste buds but will also create better deals for

small-scale coffee producers. This is the motif

of this year’s FAIRTRADE COFFEE WEEK, a

high energy campaign filled with gorgeous

cappuccinos, caffeine-loaded events and

exciting competitions.

Kicking off on 22 July 2013, and for the third

year in a row, FAIRTRADE COFFEE WEEK

opens South Africa’s eyes to the amazing

journey that coffee takes from bean to cup,

touching many countries and thousands

of lives. It also promotes the growing

availability of Fairtrade coffee in South

Africa and the growing demand from local

consumers and businesses for high quality,

fairly traded coffee.

Last year in South Africa shoppers bought

over 120 tons of Fairtrade coffee (17

million cups!) with an estimated value of

R30 million, a 167% increase from 2011!

The maturation of a local Fairtrade market

translates into increased benefits for the over

580,000 certified small-scale coffee farmers

in the world: from better prices and market

access, to investment opportunities in their

businesses and communities.

activities and inspiring stories, log onto their

WE TRIED ITPoint Virgin Active with Trainer George Burger

How much more effective is a training session when working with a personal trainer? We asked our ‘gym bunny’ media planner Rouxmia Bougas to spill the beans.

For years I have relied on George Burger from Virgin Active to get me into shape. As a former model, being my best weight and well toned was a priority. After two months of George’s positive energy and 5 times a week weight training and cardio you will feel totally transformed. He spends an hour with you literally pushing you to max out your limits and get the best results. Not having modelled much in three years, things had slipped a little so I thought it was high time I gave him a call.

George focuses on my specific goals and makes every session challenging somehow bringing in an element of fun. In a few weeks my fitness level has increased and there is huge improvement on my problem areas. After a week, I could lift heavier weights and had more energy for my sessions. I also found myself looking forward to my workouts. George gives me incredible motivation and makes sure my training is done in a way that will avoid injury. I am quite sensitive to this as when I was on the athletic team at school I managed to injure myself fairly frequently. He is extremely reliable and punctual and always ready to train ahead of time. Besides that, I have dropped two dress sizes and fit into my old favourites again. Thank you George!

After getting a science degree Dr Florrie developed an interest

in natural health and obtained qualifications in Homeopathy and Naturopathy. In 1972 she started a private practice and developed many successful homeopathic and herbal formulas. These formulas were developed and refined into the Flora Force brand of herbal products and made available to the open retail market. Five of Dr. Florrie’s eight children have joined her and are actively involved at Flora Force, each in their specific field of excellence. Dr Florrie is still doing what she does best: healing and nurturing the sick and developing new formulas.

Today, Flora Force carries a wide range of single and combination herbal capsules, tablets and tinctures for the retail market and dispensing practitioners. They only use top quality, full potency herbal ingredients in their natural and original composition.

This means high quality products which guarantee full natural strength, efficacy and safety. The pursuit of quality is upheld at the Cape Town based production facilities which are GMP compliant.

Proud of their roots and with a firm belief in the quality and true nature of their products, the Kerschbaumer family continually seeks new combinations to improve the quality of life for people using Flora Force products. The Flora Force brand is dedicated to providing the public with safe and affordable proudly South African products they can trust. “As a child growing up in an environment of teas, herbs, tinctures and homeopathics it becomes second nature and part of your life style”, says Dr Florrie’s child, Annemarie. The family’s passion, birthed out of their mother’s heart for healing, plays an enormous role in the Flora Force brand ethics; to offer patients the best quality products at affordable prices, enabling them to enjoy a better quality of life.

WHOLE HERBS VERSUS EXTRACTSOur philosophy is to use only top quality, full potency herbal ingredients in their natural and original composition. History shows that for many generations healers used whole herbs, be they dried, or as tinctures. Modern herbal medicine is based on the historic successes of using whole herbs.

Today on-going research validate use and ensure safety and efficacy. The full medicinal value of herbs lie in the intricate internal complexity of a whole herb and the interactions the different components have within the body, rather than to one specific component. Flora Force products contain whole herbs as we believe that the whole herb exhibits a wider spectrum of use than a standardised extract of one specific active biochemical component.

The Flora Force range includes single and combination herbal capsules, tablets and tinctures for the retail market as well as dispensing practitioners.

QUALITY CONTROL The pursuit of quality is upheld at the Cape Town based production facilities which are GMP complaint. Every single component undergoes strict quality control processes to ensure the quality of the herbs within the products remain consistent. This enables Flora Force to provide high quality products which guarantee full natural strength, efficacy and safety.

Flora Force for Energy & VitalityFlora Force has the perfect combination of products to assists in revitalising, energising and improving metabolism through a good 3 month cleanse. To gain maximum benefit from detoxing and cleansing, a stepwise approach is required and it is best done at the start of spring.

THIS 3 STEP APPROACH WILL REVITALIZE AND IMPROVE GENERAL HEALTH, TO ENSURE IMPROVED DAILY ENERGY.

Month 1 STEP ONE: The fluid part of the blood holds onto various waste substances that have been absorbed over time. While the body tries to eliminate this, it is often unsuccessful due to overload. Feeling sluggish and unwell is often due to this overloading effect. The liver then also battles to keep up and holds onto by-products, increasing the discomfort. So we start the cleansing by first “sweeping” out the overload. The kidneys and bowel will be activated to support elimination of toxins, via stool and urine.

Use Flora Force Lymph Cleanse™, Liver Flush™ and Dandelion.

Month 2STEP TWO: Involves addressing metabolism to optimise all the body systems, for improved functioning. During this period the nervous system (the master control of the body), hormonal system and circulation must be addressed. The herbal adaptogenic effects strengthen the system and minimise interference from stressors.

Use Flora Force Turmerynne™ and Siberian Ginseng

Month 3STEP 3: This is an important month. The initial superficial cleansing was done in month one. Now follows a deep cleansing, to ensure that all body cells rid themselves of residual by-products, free radicals and heavy metals which can resist elimination in quick “cleanses”. The liver is supported to allow regeneration of healthy liver cells and function.

Use Flora Force Carcinoguard™ and Liver Life™

Use all products as directed on the bottle. For product information see product and website.

It is important to eat good natural food. More details on our brochure and website.

Although he might be slightly roguish and irreverent along

the way, his end result is undeniably mouthwatering. Welcome to Roddy Louther’s Trattoria del Bastardo.

The last time I was this excited about anything, and I mean anything, was when a friend invited me around to roast a piglet he had bought. I thanked God when I was offered this column, (such is my reverence for food I don’t think it blasphemous to use the Lord’s name in its context) - at last I’d have the chance to engage with an ever-growing audience of foodies – and finally live out my tantalising daydreams and feed my ravenous nightmares. I hope my interest and enthusiasm for good food will infect you - I hope to help instill confidence and enthusiasm through sharing tips, nutritional facts, anecdotes and foodie experiences.

I learnt to cook out of necessity. Tired of warming canned food, I found myself experimenting. Slowly but surely I learnt there are many ways to ruin a meal, but to render it totally inedible, you’d have to be, well… a bit special. Once I knew this, I had the confidence to experiment. Quantities don’t concern me,( how do we ever know if your cup, pinch or tablespoon is the same as mine) but I do pay attention to how much of what is needed to make a dish, and read a recipe only to make sure I have all the ingredients.

I’ve also learnt that following tips from famous chefs is a good thing. I mean, who are we to question Raymond Blanc when he says ‘marinade your meat in red wine and root veggies for three hours before cooking your Boeuf Bourguignon?’ Through my experimentation (and the delightful results), I’ve learnt to take proven, traditional recipes and add my own flair. Everyone can, even you. In truth, I bastardise recipes – hence, Trattoria del Bastardo.

That brings me to my main interest - traditional European peasant food. I love

hearty, earthy meals - beans with sausages, stews like Cassoulet, Osso Bucco, Pot au Poulet, roasted kid of lamb, whole roast pork. Or rustic Romanian Gypsy stews rich with roast paprika, or a Bouillabaisse.

I will admit to having a paranormal fear of baking. It’s too precise for my sloppy ways and what’s more - you leave dough covered in a corner, and somehow it gets bigger! All on its own. That’s scary. But, perhaps one rainy Sunday morning you and I can step into this mysterious unknown together and celebrate our triumph with a warm, home baked ciabatta spread thick with salted butter and washed down with a cuppa.

All this, I believe, can be achieved by simplifying the processes – removing the fear.

So allow me to show you, not how to do it, but what I mean. For this I can think of no better way to introduce myself than with my version of the simple, traditional Tortilla Española or Spanish Omelette.

You might wonder why I have chosen the humble Spanish Omelette as my first dish, but bear with me.

The traditional dish is made with only onions, potatoes and eggs, and unlike the less flamboyant more famous French omelette that is thinner and often folded over, the generous Spanish Omelette is disk shaped and as thick and big as you like. It may seem hard to convince anyone that something with the visual appeal of Winston Churchill in the nude can be turned into something that will have you purring, ‘Oh what a dish!’ but as you’ll see later, it will be a heady experience that will at once evoke the cascading sounds of castanets and guitars, the warmth of the Costa del

Sol and the panache of beautiful olive skinned people smooching inside saffron scented tapas bars. At this point the meal becomes hearty.

In fact the good people of Spain have had an affair of the heart with the humble omelette for centuries. It is mentioned in Spanish literature as early as 1817. Do you suspect the complexity of the whole Spain/omelette thing is born from its sheer simplicity? Well this food writer does. Let’s cook one and see.

First, think of someone you would like to spend the night with. Me, perhaps? I’ll imagine ‘The little Paris Kitchen’s’ deliciously gifted Rachel Khoo snugg in my bed, while I combine cunning and skill to whip up my very own…

I’m a blend of egg white & yolk, providing a low-fat alternative, with the same great taste.

I’ve been separated for your convenience to become the ideal meringue, egg white omelette or protein shake.

METHOD• Place butternut slices in an oven dish

with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roast until tender and sugar caramelises.

• In a heavy based pan, sauté onion in olive oil until soft, sauté the chopped garlic then add chopped red pepper and smoked paprika. Heat for two more minutes.

• Remove from heat. Place a layer of potato slices then butternut slices alternately around the bottom of the pan in a circular pattern.

• Whisk eggs, milk, salt, pepper and parsley roughly. Pour into the pan and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes.

• Char the skin of the orange and yellow peppers over an open flame or roast in the oven. Let them cool until charred skin peels off easily. Slice length ways and use to decorate the top of the omelette. Place the omelette under a pre-heated grill for 2-3 minutes until set.

• To serve, loosen from the sides of the pan and invert onto a plate. Cut into wedges, sprinkle with black pepper and extra parsley. Serve with fresh bread or salad.

Energy isn’t something you want to keep upping – there needs to be a

time for rest as well. Keep your stores filled adequately, but not completely overflowing and overwhelming.

Although defining yourself can sometimes feel box-like, it does assist in being able to individualise your health habits. There are four basic temperament types in humans: Sanguinous, Bilious, Phlegmatic and Melancholic. These may not sound like something you’d like to claim, but they are categorised to distinguish not only physical attributes, but also spiritual, emotional and mental traits and they can help you individualise your eating habits. A system of medicine called Tibb that has it’s origins in Greco-Arabic medicine uses the four temperaments extensively.

GETTING TO KNOW ME See if you can identify your temperament from this brief overview:

SANGUINOUS (hot & moist)Large, muscular frame; skin moderate in softness and dryness, warm to the touch; reddish, glowing complexion; thick, oily hair; bright eyes with prominent capillaries; persuasive, sociable, talkative and outgoing personality; emotionally cheerful, bold, excited, but also a worrier; good but selective memory; healthy appetite with moderate to excessive thirst; good physical endurance; moderate to active mental activity; intolerance to hot and humid conditions; perspire easily.; moderate to deep sleep; and clear vocal tone which is moderate to loud. Female sanguines tend to have painful menstruation.

Food that’s on the opposite spectrum of your temperament will be most balancing.

BILIOUS (hot & dry)Medium, lean frame; warm to dry skin with a yellowish complexion; moderately thick and soft hair; small to medium, sharp and penetrating eyes with a yellowish tint; resourceful, outspoken, dominant and sometimes short-tempered; emotionally aggressive, angry, impatient, irritable; sharp memory that never forgets; good appetite with excessive thirst, irritable if there is a delay in meals; very active physically; precise and orderly mental activity; intolerant of hot and dry conditions; perspire easily; tendency towards insomnia, 5-6 hours is usually adequate sleep; sharp and loud vocal tone.

PHLEGMATIC (cold & moist)Large frame with tendency towards being overweight; cool, moist and soft skin texture; pale complexion with thin, oily and straight hair; dreamy, watery eyes that are moderate to large in size with an attractive light tint; calm, patient listener; emotionally fearful and shy but self-content; slow but prolonged memory; steady appetite, low thirst levels, can skip meals; physically lethargic and lack stamina; mental activity is slow, but receptive and cool-minded; intolerance to moist and cold weather; low levels of perspiration; heavy sleep, need eight or more hours and tend to oversleep; voice tone is slow and soft.

MELANCHOLIC (cold & dry)Thin, bony frame; dry and rough skin texture; cold, greyish complexion; dry, dark hair; eyes small and active with a greyish tint; thoughtful, analytical and a tendency towards perfectionism; emotionally fearful, insecure, suspicious and anxious; good short term memory, but not great long term; irregular and variable appetite and thirst; erratic and disorganised physically, but active; mental activity is restless, enquiring, imaginative and philosophical; intolerant of cold and dry conditions; don’t sweat much; sleep is irregular, interrupted and tends towards insomnia; voice is soft but fast. Female melancholics tend to clot during menstruation.

FOOD MADE FOR MENow that you’ve established your dominant temperament, what food should you eat? Well, too much of food with qualities similar to your temperament’s qualities will result in an excess of that particular quality – negatively affecting your health. So, food that’s on the opposite spectrum of your temperament will be most balancing. If you’re Sanguinous (hot and moist) you’ll be most negatively affected by food that’s hot and moist. This negative influence will be exacerbated if you’re eating in a hot and moist environment.

It’s a lot of information to take in, but before you categorically categorise yourself, or feel you could easily fit into two of the temperaments, consider the following:

• We’re all a combination of all four temperaments, but one dominates.

• A true reflection of physical appearance is determined by how you look(ed) in your early 20s.

• Don’t confuse habits with tendencies or preferences. For example, because ice is almost always served with cold drinks, you may believe that you like ice, on reflection cold drinks may not be your preference.

• Personality traits should be identified when you’re relaxed and away from environmental factors that can alter personality, like a stressful work environment.

• When evaluating personality traits, consider how other people see you, especially those who know you well like family and friends. For example, if you have a calm nature in general but can become very angry when seriously provoked, it doesn’t mean you have a bilious temperament (known to be short-tempered).

According to Prof Rashid Bhikha, author of Four Temperaments, Six Lifestyle Factors, different tastes are classified according to their qualities; six tastes are defined as follows:

SALTY - Hot & MoistINSIPID - Cold & MoistPUNGENT - Hot & DrySWEET - Moist & HotSOUR - Cold & DryBITTER - Dry & Hot

Metabolism differs with each temperamental type. Knowing this helps determine the ideal quantity of food to be consumed during meals.

SANGUINOUS – your hot and moist qualities (with a medium to large frame) means you should have two medium to large meals a day.

BILIOUS – your hot and dry qualities means you have strong digestion, which allows you to have three medium size meals a day.

PHLEGMATIC – your cold and moist qualities allows only two medium size meals.

MELANCHOLIC – your cold and dry qualities allow for three meals, these should be moderate to small.

The good news is, if you appropriately adjust the amount of food you eat, you can easily snack between meals. Here are some tips on healthy snacking for your temperament.

SANGUINOUSAvocado mash with taco, popcorn, smoked mussels, apples, strawberries, grapes and citrus fruits.

BILIOUSRice cake with cream cheese sprinkled with pumpkin seeds, almonds, plain yoghurt with honey and sunflower seeds, melons, figs and apricots.

PHLEGMATICBrown bread with humus and rocket, chicken biltong, grapes, cashew, hazel, pecan or walnuts.

MELANCHOLICGoats cheese on rye with red pepper strips, bananas and sunflower seeds, peaches, dates or mangoes, liquorice.

Even if you think you haven’t been overindulging, your body can accumulate toxins over years, leading to personal overload that can manifest as disease. "To get more energy, you need to clear out the toxins so your body has space to assimilate nutrients. It may seem strange to do a detox in winter but there is nothing like a hot bowl of delicious nutrient giving soup and a sauna to balance out the winter chills.

WINTER DETOX

Even if you think you haven’t been overindulging, your body can

accumulate toxins over years, leading to personal overload that can manifest as disease.

Although your body is designed to eliminate toxins, with environmental pollutants and additive-laden food, it sometimes battles to do that effectively. In fact, one of your body’s defence mechanisms against toxins is to store them in your fat cells – this means that toxins can remain in your system for some time, becoming a regular source of dis-ease.

Respect, don’t neglect, your body. If your body is neglected, you will not be able to find the inner harmony — because if the body is harmonious it helps to attain to inner harmony. Take every care of your health, of your body; love it, respect it, it is a great gift. It is a miracle. A mystery. Pythagorus

CLEANSEFlushing out toxins will help you gain energy and set your body up for healthier functioning. The basic principles of detoxing are about allowing your organs to rest – through fasting; stimulating your liver to drive toxins from your body; promoting elimination of toxins through your gut, kidneys and skin; improving circulation; and refuelling your body with healthy nutrients.

You may want to prepare your body for detox by fasting. You can do this slowly, by not eating any solid food for a day or two, and drinking copious amounts of water. Do remember, though, if you only drink water, you could flush your body of important nutrients, so it’s best to also drink a nutrient-rich soup (see recipe opposite). Once you’ve given your digestive system an opportunity to rest, you can begin the process of detoxing.

FIBRE: this is so important for ensuring your digestive system works effectively. Include brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beetroot, radish, cabbage, broccoli, seaweed, artichokes, spirulina and chlorella are all great detoxifiers.

HERBS: to cleanse and protect the liver – your liver works extremely hard; it holds about 13% of your body’s blood at any one time and is fundamental for eliminating toxins in your body. Drink green tea and take herbal supplements like milk thistle and dandelion root.

VITAMIN C: assists the body in producing glutathione, which is a liver compound that helps drive away toxins.

HYDRATE: drink about two litres of water during the day to ensure you stay hydrated. This can be hot water if you find cold water difficult in winter.

BREATHE: encourage oxygen to circulate more thoroughly through your system. It may sound obvious, but be conscious of your breathing and breathe deeply, focusing on expanding life-giving oxygen through your body.

STRESS LESS: this could be a hard one, but if you are mindful of stressors and your reaction to them, you will be able to consciously avoid them or at least breath your way through them – stress is a huge culprit in increasing free-radical damage in your body.

SHOWER: take a very hot shower for five minutes, with the water running on your back. Follow this with cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat this three times and then climb into bed or lie down comfortably for half an hour.

SWEAT: help your body eliminate toxins through your skin – if you have access to a sauna, this is a great way to get it all out. If not, create a sauna in your bathroom by running a shower on its hottest, with all the windows and doors closed. Remember to hydrate when you are in a sauna.

SCRUB: dry brush your skin with a relatively rough brush to help remove toxins through your pores.

EXERCISE: there’s nothing quite like exercise to boost your body. Yoga is a fantastic way to do this, so is Qigong, both of them include exercises specifically aimed at detoxifying.

DETOXING CAN CAUSE HEADACHES, JOINT, MUSCLE PAIN AND

DEHYDRATION. DEPENDING ON HOW TOXIC YOUR BODY IS, THESE

What blows your hair back?

By Glenn-Douglas Haig

Even when you are as fit and healthy as your eating and exercise plan can make you, there are days you feel flat, when your physical vigour feels like it’s gone awol… and that’s ok – our bodies can’t go at full speed all the time.

However, children still need fetching and carrying, work and shopping still need to be done and partners need love. You can’t just lie there and say, “Stop the world today!”

My question is: How else can you energize yourself? What can you do to create that inner oomph you need to get through the day? Caffeine and sugar are a standard default for most people, but many of us – especially me – have a high intolerance of caffeine and it’s not actually a sustainable energizer now, is it?

I’m more interested in a longer lasting, more pervasive energizer…. I’m wanting to know what motivates you, what inspires you to tackle your daily chores with more energy? Using willpower to push you through the day requires huge effort and comes from a place between our shoulder blades where we push ourselves onward. This is an old, fear based motivator that leads to burn-out.

How about choosing a motivator that comes from desire, creativity or self-love? Think about it: if I wake up and say to myself, ‘Aaaargh I must clean the bathroom today! I am forcing my body into action’. If I wake up and say, ‘Aaaaah I look forward to having a nice clean bathroom today!’ I am inviting myself from my heart-space to pull my body forward into action. The first motivator feels heavy and hard work-ish, while the second motivator is literally energizing and uplifting.

My invitation to you is to find whatever it is that makes your hair blow back, (even if it’s a new hairdryer) that gives you a feeling of freedom and self-love, and use that to energize yourself. The chore of cleaning the loo is a trapped feeling… the benefit of having a fresh clean loo is a freeing feeling – use it to energize your mind and your body.

On a larger scale you can choose to live your whole life like this… energizing yourself from your heart space with love and freedom and a sense of purpose, or you can resort to the mental discipline of grinding away at your days and pushing yourself forward – we know which attitude will last longer and age better.

TRY THESE 6 TIPS FOR STAYING AWARE

1. Keep a bottle of peppermint aromatherapy oil in your glove compartment and sniff it at frequent intervals. Peppermint fragrance is energising and uplifting and will keep you awake. Chewing peppermint gum or strong mints also works.

2. Before you start getting tired, practice long, slow deep breathing. Breathe in for four counts, hold for two and breathe out for six. Repeat five times and do a couple of rounds every twenty minutes or so.

3. Drink lots of water, dehydration can cause drowsiness. Pack healthy padkos rather than stopping for hamburgers. Protein snacks are a good option, like boiled eggs and veggie sausages. Fruit is always good.

4. Play upbeat music and sing along. Resolve to master a song, learn the lyrics off by heart and play the same song and few times getting yourself fully involved.

5. Never drive for more than two hours without stopping. Even if it’s just for five minutes, get out and walk around or splash cold water on your face.

6. While driving, wake up your muscle groups by flexing and releasing those that aren’t engaged in driving. Scrunch your face up and release it, try and work separate components like eyebrows, then cheeks and mouth. Work your shoulders up then release down. Pull your stomach in and flex it before releasing.

ROAD TRIP ENERGYKeep driving fatigue at bay with strategies to stay alert and awake. Many accidents on long roads are caused by drivers drifting off.

28 everything you need to live life well

Add one new energy-boosting behaviour to your life each day for

a fully integrated energy programme you can stay on for life:

Day 1 Increase your soluble fibre intake – this will slow and regulate the way your body absorbs sugar. Get yours from fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans and oats.

Day 2 Stretch yourself – a 5-10 minute power stretch each morning when you wake up and then another two sessions throughout the day can boost your energy and relax your mind – really get into the stretch and concentrate on every muscle and limb to fully ease out the tension.

Day 3 Set your sleep and wake up times – being sleep deprived quickly robs you of your energy and it’s not easy to catch up, even if you do spend your weekend in bed.

Day 4 Just like your mom told you, a good breakfast will start you off energised – but make sure it’s healthy (try quinoa porridge with fruit and an egg or our omelette recipe). For lunch, eat something light that won’t bog you down in the afternoon – go for low GI food.

Day 5 Instead of eating three big meals, plan to eat five smaller ones, spread through the day to avoid energy dips and keep you away from unhealthy snacks that spike your insulin levels.

Everyone needs a little pick-me-up now and again and rather than reaching for caffeine and chemical filled energy drinks use these suggestions to work towards a bountiful supply of natural energy.

Add one new energy-boosting behaviour to your life each day for a fully integrated energy programme you can stay on for life."

Page 29: Wellness Energise

Day 6 Get out and about – if you’re stuck in an office for most of the day, take two breaks to walk outside and breathe in some fresh air. If you can, walk rather than drive to your local supermarket or out for dinner. As you’re walking, be conscious of taking deep breaths.

Day 7 Morning workout – even if it means getting up a bit earlier, move your exercise routine to the morning – most morning exercisers report having more energy throughout the day and it’ll give you extra time in the evening to relax, unwind and get ready for your good night’s sleep.

Day 8 Boogie through the day. Keep your favourite tunes close to you – create playlists for your smartphone so you can listen while working, driving and exercising. Music boosts your energy and mood.

Day 9 Take a short nap – even a 10-minute snooze can be very restorative. If you are feeling low on energy, find a quiet place to close your eyes and drop off. But, if you feel like that every day, check your wake and sleep times.

Day 10 Supplement with Ginseng take 100-700 milligrams in two doses, morning and afternoon. Ginseng reduces your cortisol levels and boosts energy. Keep taking it though, even if you don’t at first feel the difference – Ginseng can take a few weeks to fully take effect

Day 11 Watch what you drink – alcohol at night can disrupt your sleep and if you have a drink at lunch time, it can deplete your afternoon’s energy reserves quickly. Limit your intake as far as possible and intersperse glasses of wine with water.

Day 12 Be aware of what your body is telling you – if you are simply not a morning person, then organise your day so you can wake up later. If you get an energy lag in the afternoon, be aware of this and go for a brisk walk. Notice your body rhythms and accommodate them in your day.

Day 13 Add berries to the mix – blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries and currants contain super antioxidants and are known to boost energy levels. Eat a few at least once a day.

Day 14 Sniff some lavender – keep lavender essential oil close by so you can smell it throughout the day – lavender is known to stabilise energy and mood, and boost mental clarity.

Day 15 Give the energy drinks a miss while they might give you a quick boost for a few hours, when the effects wear off, your energy reserves will crash completely. Make a new habit of drinking green tea.

Day 16 Look for and interact with positive people who you can have meaningful interactions with – daily stress really depletes energy, but happiness is a fantastic booster. Call someone uplifting.

Day 17 Go deep – look inside yourself and see if you are harbouring any unwanted feelings of guilt – this type of emotion can make you feel fatigued and down – work through that and learn to forgive.

Day 18 Get yourself a funky water bottle and infuse H2O into your daily menu – so many people are dehydrated and this can seriously affect your energy levels – make an effort to drink water often throughout the day.

Day 19 Drag yourself to the gym even when you’re feeling exhausted, arriving somewhere to exercise will help you feel better – and by the time you get there, you may well just feel like doing half an hour on the treadmill. If you’re not a gym person, get out of bed and into exercise clothing to do some stretches and a few star jumps.

Day 20 If you’re constantly feeling exhausted, there may be a medical reason. Get your thyroid checked (specifically if you’re a woman over 30) to eliminate under- or overactive thyroid as an issue.

Day 21 There’s nothing quite like the sun for a boost of energy – just 10-20 minutes a day gives you your daily dose of vitamin D and boosts your serotonin levels. Even on cloudy days you can get the benefit.

TOP 5NATURAL ENERGY BOOSTERSVitamin B12 converts carbs in your body to glucose, which you need for energy production. B12 also helps to maintain a healthy immune and digestive system and a deficiency can leave you feeling really fatigued. A vitamin B complex is also great for reducing stress levels

Ginseng enhances physical endurance and stamina. It works as an adaptogen in your body, helping balance your body’s function during times of stress (physical or emotional). If you’re on blood thinners, check with your health care professional first before supplementing with Ginseng.

L-Carnitine is an amino acid for increasing muscle mass and energy. If you’re a vegetarian, you may be missing out on this great energy booster (it's found mostly in meat and dairy products). L-carnitine enhances mental clarity and focus.

Spirulina the green-blue algae that’s packed with essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids; as well as antioxidants and gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that helps with weight management and reduces inflammation.

Green tea extract contains bioflavonoids that increase energy by boosting your metabolism. It also contains powerful antioxidants and is great for heart health as well as slowing mental decline and boosting weight loss.

Whizz up a banana, orange, strawberries and a teaspoon of flaxseed oil for a quick energy boosting mid-morning snack.

Colour has a noticeable effect on people with brighter colours being

known to increase productivity and a bad case of the blues often caused from depressing greys or browns in the environment.

A factory near London had an extraordinary incidence of absenteeism until a consultant pointed out it was painted in dull grey shades that together with the lighting made the women’s faces look a sickly blue. One look in the mirror and they would feel ill. When the colour was enhanced with a warm tone, the problem was solved. Research shows people underestimate the temperature of a blue room and overestimate the temperature of a red one. Boxes painted dark colours are deemed heavier than they are, whereas boxes painted white are felt

to be lighter than they are. In Colour and Music in the New Age, Corinne Heline mentions the Blackfriars Bridge in London which was notorious for suicides. When the black ironwork was repainted bright green, suicides from the bridge declined by more than a third. On a subconscious level we are strongly influenced by colour. In 1939 leading up to war, it’s interesting that red became the predominant fashion colour. This was obviously needed, red being the colour related to strength, courage, initiative and physical activity. Later when much healing was needed in 1944, pastel colours were the rage, even shop front window displays used soft and soothing colours.

Writer and theosophist Alice A Bailey predicts that in the future: The effect of colour on people, animals and units in

the vegetable kingdom will be studies and the result of these studies will be the development of etheric vision, or the power to see the next grade of matter with the physical eye. Increasingly will people think and talk in terms of light.

PAINT IT BRIGHTFor better productivity in the workplace, check the quality of your lighting and the shade of colours around you.

Ayurveda for youAN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO JOINT DISEASE

Dr. Harshada RamaAyurveda Practitioner

[email protected]

Wellness in every home through herbal healthcare

Ayurveda identifies two major types of joint problems. The first is associated

with poorly nourished joints, an overall weakness or low bone density. This condition comes from an imbalance of vata. Vata is the principle that governs circulation and nerve impulses within the body. Joint problems result in discomfort and clicking or cracking sounds. If not attended to, this can lead to eventual immobilization of the joints. Degeneration happens when the bones don’t receive the lubricating nourishment they need. This we describe as a kapha imbalance – a condition called Sandhivata which can be compared to Osteoarthritis in modern terms.

The second kind of joint disease is associated with a toxic overload in the joints, as a result of ama or toxins in the body. Ama (the sticky, toxic waste-product of incomplete digestion) accumulates in the joints and creates stiffness and heaviness. If ama is not treated, it converts to amavisha, an even more toxic form of ama

more irritating and reactive in nature. Amavisha causes the joint to become inflamed, swollen and painful. Damp, cold weather, like we have in a typical Cape Town winter, aggravates this condition. If untreated, amavisha mixes with the natural lubricating fluids in the joint governed by kapha to form sleshma (an extremely sticky, toxic substance) that restricts mobility and disturbs circulation in the joint. If ama, amavisha and sleshma remain in the joint, the structure of the joint and the bone itself becomes damaged. This condition, Amavata, can be compared to Rheumatoid Arthritis in modern terms.

8 ways to pacify Vata 1. Include all six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent) in your diet. 2. Eat grains like quinoa and rye, cooked in water with a little added ghee; freshly cooked organic vegetables; mung dal soup and sweet, organic, juicy fruits. 3. Make sure you get calcium, include high-quality organic milk and vegetables like spinach and asparagus. Eat root vegetables cooked with

cinnamon, clove and black pepper. 4. Avoid stimulating activity at night, like watching television right before bed. 5. Eat your main meal at noon and a light, nourishing dinner early in the evening. 6. Engage in mild exercise like walking every day. 7. Include meditation and deep breathing exercises to help dissolve stress and calm the mind. This is especially good for calming vata. 8. Try and have a daily ayurvedic oil massage. You can do this yourself with sesame oil.

3 way to reduce Ama 1. Eat warm, light foods that are easy to digest. Nourishing soups and warm, freshly cooked grains and vegetables prepared with spices like ginger, cumin, fennel, mint, turmeric and fenugreek will stimulate digestion and help dissolve ama. 2. Keep digestion in check by avoiding sleeping during the day, going to bed early, and rising before 6h00am. 3. Exercise every day. Do something you love. A brisk walk is ideal for most people, along with yoga, although if you have more kapha accumulation you may need a vigorous exercise to stay in balance. You'll feel lighter and more energetic just by making these simple changes in your routine.

Herbs that HealShallaki (Boswellia serrata) is a powerful pain and inflammation remedy mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts dating back thousands of years. This herb is recommended for treating osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, joint pain, skeletal muscle pain and back pain. It plays a significant role in supporting normal joint function. Rasna (Alpinia galangal) is a member of the rhizome family. Like Ginger and Turmeric, it has anti-inflammatory properties which alleviate and treat muscle and joint aches. Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) has been used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine as a rejuvenating tonic. The use of the leaf and the root of this plant treat oedema and rheumatism and alleviate muscle aches and joint pains.

34 everything you need to live life well

Our energy pathways in the body are all interconnected.

Dr Yesheen gives a quick overview of energy, how it moves in our bodies and offers tips for getting more.

"POWERED UPHumans are energy in form. We

run on energy. Some energy sources you can see, some not, some are measurable and some not-yet-measurable. Our energy pathways in the body are all interconnected. A healthy and energised body that is physically balanced supports the creation and maintenance of balanced mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. We cannot expect to evolve in other aspects of our lives when our foundation, our physical body is lagging behind.

So where do we focus our efforts? How do we begin to power our physical body?

The answer is all in one word - Mitochondria.

During the digestive process, macronutrients from carbohydrates, protein and fat break down into glucose, amino acids and fatty acids respectively. These simple molecules contain stored energy that powers our body, mind and spirit. When these molecules reach the cells, mitochondria convert them into active energy, most often called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

In essence mitochondria are microscopic little structures that live inside every cell. Cells that require more energy, like those in the heart or liver have more mitochondria to help produce more energy. Mitochondria come almost exclusively from our mothers. Most of the mitochondria in the sperm cell fall away when fertilisation takes place, leaving maternal mitochondria to populate the cells in the developing fetus.

Mitochondria operate by taking in glucose, amino acids or fatty acids. Then with the help of oxygen, they extract ATP from the food molecules. During this process they give off water and carbon dioxide. ATP is used by our organs, tissues, cells, enzymes and hormones to keep the body running smoothly.

As you can imagine, mitochondria are working all the time, day and night. When we’re awake we use energy to move, think, express and feel. When we’re asleep we use energy to dream, detox, repair and grow. It is when these little guys are over-worked and under-paid - i.e. under-nutrified, that errors can occur and imbalances and diseases begin. These include cardio-metabolic syndrome (diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, heart disease), Parkinsonism and liver disease.

Mitochondria are also responsible for shutting down cells past their sell-by date, called apoptosis. When errors occur here, dysfunctional cells continue to grow and replicate, giving rise to growths and cancers.

5 ways to support energy function:

1. Consume foods rich in mitochondrial-enriching anti-oxidants. These are found in phytonutrient-rich plant foods like raw fruit and vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds.

2. Keep in sync with your internal clock, which means getting enough healthy sleep every night.

3. Water is the lubricant that keeps the engine rolling – drink up to two litres every day, especially in winter when your immune system uses up a lot of energy.

4. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential building blocks for mitochondrial structure.

5. Supplement with high-dose anti-oxidants that support optimal mitochondrial health. Examples include vitamins C & E, CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid and selenium.

36 everything you need to live life well

Each calorie provided by a protein, fat and carbohydrate back in Paleolithic times, brought with it more vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and polyphenols than our food today - during that time the soil was rich in nutrients and minerals.

A couple of months ago I knew our ENERGISE issue was coming up and I wanted to see if there was something on our shelves that could really make a difference to my energy levels. Something noticeable I could actually feel in my body.

"GREEN POWER

I asked the Kloof street dispensary if there was a product that people

raved about, and came back for. Without hesitating, they said, Green Vibrance. “Everyone that takes it, gets hooked,” they said. That made it easy; I didn’t have to research a whole lot of products.

Three days after taking Green Vibrance I was incredibly excited at how I started feeling. I just suddenly had all this extra energy and I felt alive and alert. Because I consider myself healthy– my immune system is incredibly strong, I exercise, don’t drink alcohol and get enough sleep - I never imagined things could get better. The sad thing is no matter how much good food I get, our food does not have the nutrients it used to have.

It is almost impossible to get optimum nutrition from food anymore. What many people don’t realise, as I didn’t, is they are walking around not feeling as good as they can feel.

Green Vibrance is a greenish powder that, once opened, must be kept frozen. You are supposed to have a scoop a day but I decided on half a scoop. It was tricky wondering how to take it – drinking green things is always a bit challenging. I settled mixing mine with yoghurt and honey which disguised it and was delicious. Green Vibrance is a concentrate of 71 ingredients from whole plants to botanical extracts, probiotics, enzymes and isolated nutrients like Vitamin E, Boron, Selenium and Chromium. It is based on the premise that our biochemistry is wired to absorbing the type of nutrients we used to have before food was processed and soil depleted. It is formulated to provide nutrient density that returns dietary intake to that more closely related to our rich ancestral Paleolithic diet.

“The body must take in enough of a complete group of healthful nutrients, and those nutrients must be delivered to the cells of the body, even those at the periphery of the capillaries reach. Under these influences, optimal health can be achieved, bringing along with it a strong immune system, sustained energy production and systems that run smoothly and cleanly.”

It is quite pricey (R635) for a tub but I find that taking half a scoop is fine and that means it lasts me two months. I am definitely going to carry on taking it.

3 IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:

1. Nutrition really does make a fundamental difference to how your body operates. It can change your moods, alter your digestion, your metabolism, your energy levels, the quality of sleep you get and how you feel in your day-to-day life.

2. The less toxic you are, the more easily your body is able to absorb the nutrients you give it. If you are fairly toxic, your body has more difficulty with its basic functions and this will affect the way you feel.

3. Keeping a balanced pH level is incredibly important. Eating more alkaline foods and less acid forming foods (or taking a supplement that keeps your body alkaline) is one of the easiest and best health tips you can live by.

Seeing the economy as an exchange of energy is not easy in today’s

world where cash almost seems a thing of the past. It’s easy to just press a button, type in a pin or swipe a card to make a purchase. You may be mindful of your day to day purchases and careful about who you give your hard-earned money to – from buying local produce to invest in your community, to avoiding chemical-ridden or unethical manufacturing. But, what about the money you invest? When it’s not in your hands, where does it go and what is it doing?

INTO THE BLUEYou may have invested some time ago in a retirement annuity or in mutual trusts. The principles of investing are quite simple – you give an amount of money to a responsible organisation and they in turn use your money to invest in other companies. As those companies grow and make profit, so your investment grows. Your first expenditure of energy, your work,

realises an exchange of money, which you then pass on as further energy to fuel other enterprises that are employing people who expend their energy – and so it goes – the cycle of economics.

But have you given any thought to where it goes once you’ve handed it over to your broker? If you’re not a stock exchange trader, you probably haven’t.

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLEThe Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is generally where investment companies go to find opportunities for your money. They set up socially responsible investment criteria in 2004 – a list that outlines a triple bottom line standard covering the environment, society and economy. Companies listed on the JSE are assessed according to the criteria and ranked accordingly. The criteria are based on the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, but are also South Africa-centric in that they assess BEE status and policies on HIV/AIDS. the SRI pillars and criteria from the JSE website: www.jse.co.za.

This is all good news of course – that there’s governance keeping companies ethical and ensuring their environmental impact or social responsibility is in line with international standards and human rights. However, the whole purpose of investments, buying and selling shares in companies, is to make money, not necessarily to ensure world peace or some other such altruistic leaning.

There’s also a question of the ‘green veneer’, or ‘green washing’ – terms used to describe companies or products describing themselves as green or sustainable, but when you dig a little deeper, there are a few dubious practices that don’t quite add up (for example, a company producing recycled paper and employing disadvantaged individuals may in fact be causing a negative impact on the environment with their recycling process, and may not be paying their workers an entirely fair wage).

So, the key is to dig as deep as you can – don’t just look at the glossy brochures or criteria ‘ticks’ – find out who the company really is and if they are putting their money where your heart is.

US & THEMBut, are your ethics in line with the financial world’s ethics? What if there’s a company that comes out with flying colours in terms of the triple bottom line standard, and has developed a cure for HIV/AIDS? Sounds wonderful – definitely a place to put your heart into. But, what if they then patent that cure? A patent means the miraculous cure will be controlled by that one company – and so then will the price of the cure. It also means that while the patent is current, no other company can use the formula for the medicine to create a cheaper generic which could then be available to all.

This is where you may start to have a problem with said pharmaceutical company, and where your heart and your money part ways.

Not everything that can be counted, counts; and not everything that counts can be counted. – Einstein

YOUR MONEY, YOUR ENERGYOf course, you want to plan for the future and ensure that if something untoward should happen to you, there’s a bit of reserve to give you some peace of mind. No matter what your feelings towards money are, the fact is, you need some. While we may be seeing a resurgence of bartering and trading of skills rather than money, it’s not really practical right now to live without it.

If you have, or are intending to invest your money with a financial institution, ask the questions. Get a list of companies your money has been invested in and if those companies aren’t in line with your beliefs, make a noise – unit trust investment companies offer a list of each company invested in at each quarter, as do some retirement annuities. After all, it’s your money, your energy that’s essentially funding their operations.

The Financial Times Lexicon defines responsible investment as an investment strategy which seeks to generate both financial and sustainable value. It consists of a set of investment approaches that integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) and ethical issues into financial analysis and decision-making. Responsible investment goes by many names – it is variously referred to as socially responsible investing (SRI), ethical investing, sustainable investing, triple-bottom-line investing, green investing – but underlying these differing names is a common theme focused on long-term value creation. Value in this context refers not only to economic value, but to the broader values of fairness, justice, and environmental sustainability.

Part of your dress sense might call for shoes on every occasion, but even though you might be sparing yourself fungal infections and dirty feet, you could also be missing out on a vital source of health and energy.

Quite simply, we are bioelectrical beings living on an electrical planet. It makes sense that connecting to the earth is what we’re supposed to do.

"

The earths’ electromagnetic field is designed to boost your wellbeing.

INFUSED WITH LIFEPerhaps it’s instinctive human knowledge that you feel better when you’ve been frolicking about barefoot in nature. Certainly, few people can resist the pedicure-like effects of walking on beach sand, a quick dip of the toes in sea water is always a delight and who can deny the pleasure of

bare feet on soft, newly-mowed grass. The earth’s electromagnetic field is perfectly conducted through our bodies, because we’re mostly made up of water.

Cardiologists are discovering the astounding benefits to their patients and some even prescribe a 40-minute session of ‘earthing’ for people with heart disease – a stroll on a damp lawn without any shoes on. When you’re connected to earth, your red blood cells become more charged – this means they vibrate at a higher level and they move further apart. The result is that your blood is thinned; it flows more easily and effectively lowers blood pressure.

Studies have also shown that earthing can improve symptoms of PMS, sleep apnoea, stress levels, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pain. Additionally, some research has indicated that earthing can improve your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels and accelerate your immune system function.

And what of those dreadfully nebulous, DNA-damaging things called free radicals that we are advised to avoid as much as possible? Well, the earth’s energy neutralises the damaging effects of free radicals – it’s an astounding antioxidant. Because free radical damage has been linked with aging, it seems one of the elixirs of longer (if not eternal) life has been right under our feet all this time.

I believe there is a subtle magnetism in nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright. – Henry David Thoreau

SALT WATER IS THE BEST CONDUCTOR, SO IF YOU’RE ABLE TO, SPEND AS MUCH

TIME AS POSSIBLE WALKING ON THE BEACH, CLOSE TO THE

SHORELINE.

TIPS

Be mindful of earth’s healing energy and make it part of your daily routine. Try these tips to get re-connected with earth’s incredible healing power:

PICNIC it’s been proven time and again that spending time outdoors is good for your mental and physical health – make picnicking part of your weekly routine, and spend time sitting, lying and walking on the grass.

MORNING DEW Because water is a great conductor, start your day by standing barefoot on dewy grass for 10-15 minutes each morning.

GO HIKING Your feet may take a little strain if you’re used to wearing shoes, but hiking barefoot also gives your feet a workout, with stones and sticks pressing on reflexology points – start a barefoot walking club. Walking barefoot in this type of setting also involves your mind (looking out for what’s on the path ahead), which is calming and stress-relieving. Also, your tendons and muscles work a little harder, which can have a positive effect on your core muscles too.

SWITCH ON There are earthing mats available over the internet, so you can take advantage of earth’s energy while you sleep (this has been shown to improve insomnia).

Ditch those shoes and make an effort to tap in to the healing power of the earth. Get creative with your earthing practise – try exercising outdoor without your shoes, walk barefoot at home if you have natural floor coverings like concrete or wood and, as often as possible, dig your toes into the beautiful earth, knowing it’ll give you a full body make over.

4 TIPS to get re-connected with earth’s incredible healing power >

SHOO SHOEToday, many shoes are made with synthetic material – rubber and plastic particularly are insulators – which means there’s a deadening layer between you and the earth’s healing energy. Modern life, it seems, is designed to keep us off the grass. Walking is something everyone does, every day – so if you wear shoes that are conductive, you’ll be gaining benefit just as you go about your day (natural materials like leather are conductors – mingled with a little sweat, they work even better).

The rise in chronic diseases in the world has been blamed on everything from bad lifestyle choices to toxins in the environment. But, with science advancing (well… backwards to ancient beliefs, as it often does), one of the reasons people are afflicted with so many dire conditions could be as simple as disconnection from nature. Quite simply, we are bioelectrical beings living on an electrical plant. It makes sense that connecting to the earth is what we’re supposed to do.

If your greys are starting to surface or your hair is looking on the dull and

lackluster side, dyeing your hair (with a more natural alternative of course) could give your hair and spirits the boost that it’s in need of.

Available in over 30 countries for the past 40 years, Herbatint permanent herbal hair colour is gentle and effective.

Gentle? This unique dye contains NO Ammonia, Paraben or Resorcinol but rather has vegetal and herbal extracts to protect the hair and scalp. These include Meadowfoam, White Birch, Witch Hazel and Echinacea. The result is no burning on your head during the process and no smell. Herbatint also has the lowest possible levels of Peroxide and PPD.

Effective? It covers grey, is available in 30 rich natural and fashion shades and offers more conditioning, lasting colour.

Available in South Africa for seven years, Herbatint has gained a reputation as an outstanding quality more natural alternative. What separates Herbatint from many other more natural hair dyes is that it is not Henna-based. It works like any conventional hair dye (namely it does not coat the hair like Henna does), it doesn’t fade and can also lighten the hair by one or two tones without damaging the hair’s structure. And, Herbatint is economical; it comes with a screwable lid so you can save what you don’t use for next time.

Those looking to cover grey, will do well to stick to a colour from the natural (N) range (or make sure to mix a fashion colour with one of the natural colours). Herbatint offers a really beautiful wide range of colours, and you can mix up the exact colour you are after.

How is Herbatint able to do all this without the presence or high concentration of many of the harsh ingredients in conventional hair dyes?

One of the most risky chemicals in hair dyes in terms of health and allergies is Ammonia, which is used to penetrate hair with colour. Instead of Ammonia Herbatint uses special plant-based alkalines, with a maximum pH level of 8.5 (ammonia is 12.5). This avoids structural damage to the hair shaft and means that once the colour pigments have been deposited, the hair cuticle can be completely re-closed, resulting in far superior hair condition and less colour fade. The inclusion of Aloe Vera in the dye aids in the transfer of colour.

Another controversial ingredient in hair dyes is PPD, the colour pigments used to alter your hair’s natural shade, and a necessary ingredient in permanent hair dyes that do not wash out. Current European legislation allows for PPDs to make up 6% of the ingredients of hair dyes. However Herbatint contains the minimum possible levels, around

0.8% - 0.9% in most colours, with a maximum of 2.1% in the darkest colours.

Hydrogen Peroxide, a necessary ingredient when lightening hair or covering grey, is not considered a health risk in low quantities. Though it is super potent and there are a small number of people who may be allergic, in general the most significant side effect is damage to your hair, and Herbatint contains far lower levels than conventional hair colours.

Since people can be allergic to all kinds of substances, natural and synthetic, it’s recommended to do a patch test prior to use of any hair dye each time. Many people do not react to Herbatint with its inclusion of Aloe Barbadensis, a natural and effective anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant.

For the ethically and environmentally concerned consumer, Herbatint is not tested on animals and comes in biodegradable, recyclable packaging.

Since Herbatint is gentler on your hair, you get to experiment with your look without fear of the damage to your hair and health. Here’s to change and renewal all year round.

THE EDITOR TRIES IT OUT As natural as I make myself out to be…yes, it’s me you bump into along the grocery aisle checking all the food labels for preservatives; buying organic cosmetics; signing petitions to save the earth, dashing off to yoga…but as my sister says, all that is a bit contradictory when once a month you pour chemicals on your hair to stop it looking grey. So, ashamed as I am to say, vanity has superseded my principles on that count. When Danny from Herbatint assured me he had a natural hair colourant that doesn’t use ammonia or damage your hair, I was intrigued, a bit sceptical but willing to give it a try.

You see, not only does vanity cost a lot (at least R700 a month at the hairdresser) but it takes up a lot of time too. With deadlines and meetings, giving up four hours to get your hair done takes a lot of commitment. I always feel a bit antisocial sitting at the salon with laptop in tow trying to knock off a few emails. Doing it at home means you don’t have to schedule in an appointment and it takes much less time. It also costs less, my Herbatint kit was around R135. I know the chemicals we use on our hair are harmful and they do end up in our bloodstream, not to mention our waterways. So of course I scrutinized the ingredients, ‘what have they replaced the ammonia with’, I wondered. I also double checked to see if 100% grey coverage was actually stated on the package insert. It said, ‘A hair colour specially formulated using herb extracts and plant proteins without ammonia. A gentle, alternative hair colour’, and yes it said, 100% grey coverage. Happy for herbs and plants to replace my usual chemicals and grateful for the grey cover promise, I was ready.

Being a bit of a sissy I called a friend over to help. Of course it’s entirely easy to do it yourself but in any case a girly evening is always nice. I chose the closest colour to my (apart from the grey bits) natural colour. It was honey blonde. Minke was such a darling, we whipped up the solution, two bottles you pour into a bowl, she put the gloves on and got to work. The solution didn’t smell at all, it didn’t burn my scalp and didn’t feel at all toxic. We waited 40 minutes, rinsed it off and applied the conditioner. Once it dried I could really see the result and whoopee, I must say I was a bit surprised that it actually worked. The colour was great. The other thing I learnt about Herbatint is that if you just need a touch up, you can use a bit, close up the bottles and keep it for another time. Most home based dyes, once you have opened the bottle, you need to use it or throw it away. Okay, I am convinced, Herbatint is my new natural hair colour solution. Thanks Danny, you were right!

50 everything you need to live life well

When it comes to understanding nature’s power to heal, the art of tuning our bodies to nature’s voice has mostly been lost.

Listening to nature's voice

integrative healthbewell

quoteHealthistheproperrelationshipbetweenmicrocosm,whichisman,andthemacrocosm,whichistheuniverse.Diseaseisadisruptionofthisrelationship.-Dr.YesheDonden,physiciantotheDalaiLama

Yet we all have inner wisdom which is by far the most experienced

source of knowledge when it comes to what is really going on inside our own minds and bodies. Even psychologists know that, and act only as a catalyst to the emotional healing process.

Western society has moved, for the most part, away from this innate wisdom and relies more and more on the pre-packaged ‘pill for every ill’ concept. In fact, many people view the notion of communing with nature a bit strange and better left for hippies and mystical beings. Perhaps advances in technology, allowing humans to study the mechanisms of the body and manufacture on-the-shelf ready medicine, has replaced the practice of growing your own potions and mixing up herbal remedies when needed. People have moved away from the fields and into sprawling urban centres where nature is neatly packaged into snippets of parkland or back gardens.

RELEARNING ANCIENT WISDOMBut it seems science is moving back towards what really works – away from chemically modified and side effect-filled treatments – to consult with what is already created and designed specifically for good health. Society is no longer accepting ‘band aid’ medicine. Masking symptoms is no longer adequate – but the concept of getting to the root cause of issues and preventing them in the first place has returned. One of the reasons for this is that individuals

are awakening to their own inner wisdom and beginning to understand their unique needs, maladies and desires. Plants, in their innate beauty, simplicity and innocence are uniquely positioned to absorb energy from the five elements: earth, water, light (sun), air and even fire (which assists in regeneration and new growth). Edward Bach, an English bacteriologist, pathologist and homeopath understood this well. He believed illness is a result of conflict between your soul’s purpose and your personality’s actions and outlook. This, according to Bach, leads to negative moods and energy blockages which in turn causes a lack of harmony that leads to physical disease. Although a scientist by training, Bach eschewed this by developing his flower remedies intuitively. For example, if he felt a negative emotion, he would hold his hand over different plants and if one relieved the emotion, he’d ascribe that plant the power to heal that particular emotion. His belief was that early morning sunlight passing through the dew drops on flower petals transferred the healing power of the plant into the water. Collecting dew drops didn’t yield much of a harvest and so he developed a method of suspending flowers in spring water while the sun’s rays filtered through.

SHAMANISTIC THINKINGAlthough shamanism may evoke images of American Indians, it’s a practise found the world over, in varying degrees. What’s common is the belief in a spiritual world, one that embodies every living thing and the ability to work within that world as opposed to the conscious plane. Everything alive carries its own energy, but every type of energy is intricately linked at its source. This belief connects every living thing and attributes wisdom to that energy force. This is why being in nature, understanding it and listening to it can enhance and complement your own innate wisdom. Tapping into the energy and wisdom of plants brings about a cleansing of your spirit – encouraging the unblocking of energy pathways that may be stopping your body and mind from functioning optimally. Plant sprit healing is not just a modality of healing but also a way of life that assists you in becoming who you truly are, according to the path you are meant to be. The life long journey of getting to know your true nature and being able to live accordingly is assisted by the spirituality of plants. They remind you that you are ultimately in service to the sacredness in all life. Many shamans have expert knowledge on local medicinal plants – and a lot of this knowledge is derived directly from the plants’ spirits. In plant spirit healing, the focus is on the body’s energy and the source of dis-ease rather than symptoms. Symptoms are used as a guideline towards the source – a disruption of the body’s energy. It’s believed that if you are not living according to your true nature, your energy becomes contradictory and causes misalignment or vulnerability. The use of plant spirit healing along your journey isn’t about achieving perfect physical health – it’s about becoming fully you.

Ditch the workout, join the partyThis Latin-inspired dance workout

is less of an exercise regime and more like a dynamic dance celebration. It is not your normal serious sweat session. In a 60-minute Zumba class you swivel your hips, shake your buns, laugh, smile and dance to the Latin-flavoured music.

Zumba combines traditional dance moves from salsa, tango, samba, salsa, merengue and even belly dancing and aerobics for a high energy, body sculpting work-out.

"Stretching, toning movements and a lot of shimmy, shaky, spicy movements add to the fun factor and burning calories,"

says instructor Tanya Nuchols, teacher at Lucas Mthenjane’s Zumba studio Fizeeks in Cape Town’s city bowl.

Zumba is a total body workout that feels like a festive party. Using Latin dance’s sultry and seductive moves, the routines target your hips, firm your abs, and tighten your thighs and butt. It uses cardio with intervals of low, medium and high intensity that keep your heart rate varied. Clever choreography matches the music’s pace and type of movements, so Zumba challenges muscles, builds strength and increases endurance. A high fun factor and catchy music bring dancers back for more. Exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats are irresistible – no one can resist the

high that the movement brings. Zumba is for anyone. It’s not competitive and has targeted programmes like the Zumba Gold for seniors, Aqua Zumba and Zumba Atomic for children.

Lucas Mthenjane introduced this dance phenomenon to our country and is the owner of Fizeeks in the Cape Town City Bowl, a training, dance and fitness studio. His motto in life is, “to dream, believe in yourself and have fun doing the things you love best, you only have one life, so live it!”

Lucas’ background is in street dancing, break dancing, martial arts, Capoeira, gymnastics, personal training, African based dancing and Zumba. He is mixing it up and adding his own African flavour to the Latin based routines, which is why the ladies love his classes so much. “African movement is grounding, powerful and challenging,” says Lucas. “It is fun, it is an experience, it is energy, and it is movement. With Zumba we move. We get you to move forward, move backwards, interact – you will see it is crazy. It gives you a natural high.”

Join Jennifer Lopez, Natalie Portman, Victoria Beckham and other celebrities who take part in this exhilarating dance fitness sensation. Learn how to include super fast-forward merengue, salsa, flamenco and other international dance styles and leave feeling breathless, energized and invigorated.

When I sat down with Lucas he was just about to go on a trip

to Japan to represent Zumba in a two day fitness event. Before that he was in New Dehli and Jaipur in India to license Zumba instructors. In fact, Zumba has taken Lucas all over the world. You see because of his absolute dedication and talent Lucas was specially chosen to represent the Zumba brand internationally. He is a qualified Zumba Education Specialist and after countless conventions and travels he is still overwhelmed that his passion for fitness can take him to such great heights.

It all started, he says, in Soweto where he was brought up. His older brother started break dancing and Lucas would go along to watch. He later got involved in street dancing and then became an aerobics instructor. He loved all kinds of movement and did martial arts and gymnastics as well. But it was when he went to a five day fitness convention in Orlando, he took a Zumba class and fell in love with the passion infused, high energy dance moves. “Zumba

gives you everything”, says Lucas, “it has different rhythms with slow and fast beats, it also has incredible music that your body just wants to move to. It’s more like having a party, than doing a work-out.”

His students feel the same way. Many of them are devoted Zumba goers and visit his studio in Cape Town city a few times a week. “Lucas makes the classes addictive, the way he moves and guides us to follow is sexy and energising,” says a keen student. There are apparently about 15 million people around the world that go to Zumba classes. “It’s exercise in disguise, and has really exploded as a training option for people who love dance.” he says.

More than just following Zumba, Lucas has added his own touch. At the annual Zumba Instructor Convention held in Orlando, Florida, over 10 000 Zumba Instructors come from all over the world. Here they get the opportunity to continue their education sessions. Lucas has been selected to present a truly South African workout that he created called Katika Fitness. This includes dance styles like Jive, Kwaito, Capoeira and

Kwela. The organisers have put it on the schedule as “African Mix’.

All children have moments of overexcitement and excess

energy – sometimes the prospect of an exciting event can send them off on a road-runner type burst of activity and other times an excess of bad-for-you sweets or food can have the same effect. But what if the excess energy is a daily occurrence?

ACTIVE OR HYPERACTIVE?It’s not easy to tell if your child is actually hyperactive as opposed to normally boisterous. But there are guidelines, as outlined in the Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (one of the standard diagnostic tools used in the world) – if your child consistently exhibits the following, they may be considered hyperactive: repeatedly

fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat; often gets up from seat when remaining in seat is expected; often runs about or climbs when and where it is not appropriate; frequently has trouble playing or enjoying leisure activities quietly; is often ‘on the go’ or acts as if ‘driven by a motor’; often talks excessively.

56

It’s not easy dealing with a hyperactive child – but there are behavioural and natural treatments to slow the hyperactivity down.

SUPPLEMENTING BEHAVIOURWhile you may avoid all food with additives, colourants and sugar, and it may help, because there is a definitive link between diet and behaviour, there may also be benefit in supplementing your child’s diet, rather than merely removing the ‘baddies’. The BBC documentary Child of Our Time revealed numerous interesting aspects of children’s health and wellbeing. One of these is the incredible effects of Omega-3 on behaviour. Two children in the documentary who displayed different behavioural problems (aggression and withdrawal) were given Omega-3 supplements and within a short period of time, their behaviour had dramatically improved.

Dr Alex Richardson, a neuroscientist from Oxford University says, “Fish and seafood are the only ready-made sources of the essential Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA which we need for our brains. If we don't get them from fish, we have to build them from other, simpler forms of the fatty acids found in green leafy vegetables and some nuts and seeds. However, in some cases of dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and ADHD, and even depression, the brain needs more fatty acids than average, which are not being provided in the normal diet.

Food allergies have long been linked with ADHD, and a study that put diagnosed children on a restricted diet found their hyperactivity was reduced by an astounding 64%. Another study indicated there was a high prevalence of harmful bacteria in hyperactive children’s guts – probiotic supplementation helped to balance that with good bacteria and behaviour was improved.

PARENTING CUESRecently, Dr Mel Konner, author of The Tangled Wing, said that during his two years of research on children among the Kalahari San, he watched kids scramble over huge termite hills, chase each other around the bush, practice dance steps, stop to dig up a tasty tuber, pick some berries, or throw a rock at a hapless bird or turtle which they could then cook and eat. He says he often wondered how many of them might be called inattentive or hyperactive in a classroom setting. His point is quite clear – is hyperactivity actually a cultural issue.

Parenting styles differ from family to family and certainly from culture to culture (there are far less children diagnosed as ADHD in France than in America for example). There are ways that you can deal with hyperactivity that don’t involve medication or great parental frustration. Loving and fair discipline is one of the keys. Set clear rules with boundaries and consequences and don’t be flexible on your absolutes – children (even those who aren’t hyperactive) need to know where they stand all the time, it ensures a sense of security and belonging. Routine is another must – you can relax routine a bit on weekends or holidays, but ensure they know the routine is changing for a good reason.

UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCEMisbehaviour and hyperactivity aren’t the same thing – as Clinical Psychologist and clinical instructor Harvard University, Dr Roberto Olivardia, says, hyperactivity is like feeling an intense itch and not scratching it – even if you don’t scratch it, you’ll be so distracted by wanting to.

OFFER ALTERNATIVESFidgeting has actually been found to improve focus and reduce hyperactivity. Find useful ways to allow your child to fidget – for example, instead of them getting up from a chair five times during dinner, encourage them to count the peas on their plate or play some kind of game that allows movement that’s not disruptive.

ALLOW MOVEMENTTeachers could probably de-stress their classroom experiences by allowing children to stand around a desk at certain times rather than having them sit still for the requisite 45 minutes – it may not be practical all the time, but allowing hyperactive children the freedom to move (even just shuffling from foot to foot) will reduce their need to fidget and fuss.

GIVE A LITTLEIf your child is actually eating dinner and not misbehaving, then overlook the fact they’re walking around the dinner table while they do it (even if it is making your head spin).

BURN OUTIf you know the time is coming for a stretch of sitting still (such as a car trip or a visit to the hairdresser), allow some frenetic activity beforehand (make it a fun routine to do 10 star jumps before getting into the car, for example).

For any child, it’s good to instil good eating habits and with hyperactive children, it’s even more important. Stick to natural food that’s organic, fresh and raw.

•Oranges are filled with potassium that has a muscle-relaxing effect and vitamin C that boosts immune function. Let your child peel the orange (to assist with focus).

•Darkchocolate is not only healthier and less fat-filled (go organic) than normal chocolate, it’s also known to reduce the stress hormone cortisol, as well as norephinephrine, which is linked to nervousness and anxiety.

•Peaches contain a natural sedative that can assist in alleviating stress and anxiety – it’s also a wonderfully healthy sweet treat.

•Whole grain crackers with peanut butter, almond nut butter, or low-fat cheese will be filling and help keep the body’s energy flow balanced.

• Nuts or seeds make great quick snacks – use walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds or toasted pumpkin seeds.

Finding balance alongside the chaos

of Lego and my inbox

By Kathy Brüggemann, editor of www.mommymatters.co.za

Balancing work and family is, without question, one of the most significant struggles faced by working moms. When you're a working parent, sometimes it's harder to figure out who's the tougher boss: your actual boss or your kids.

As mom to an extremely active three year old, I’m constantly finding myself juggling the balance in my home. This is particularly evident as he matures and needs more stimulation and intellectual input. Gone are my multitasking days where I could cook dinner and finish a deadline in the afternoon once he has returned from playschool. I’m sure that will return once he is older, and happy to play on his own, or can do his homework alone, but right now he is hungry to grow and learn and that demands my attention. I find myself examining the quality of my home environment so he feels loved and nurtured.

Children turn corners in their development daily, and failing to recognise that can lead to the child feeling frustrated and playing up because you aren’t meeting his intellectual needs.

They tend to use behaviour to attract attention – behaviour that can manifest as anger and tantrums.

Take an extra five minutes in the evenings to sing a few songs with them at bedtime. Avoid talking about your day at the office during dinner - children want to focus on their day, not yours.

Studies show that family strength is strongly linked to how much time family members spend together and how much appreciation they show each other. Other research shows that a good family life can help prevent burnout at work. Every chance you have to build your relationship with your children benefits them, and has a pay off for you too.

Skin Tingling treatments

60 everything you need to live life well

While you may be doing all the right things in terms of sustaining mental and physical energy throughout the day, waking your skin up might be just the thing for a total energy infusion

lookwellbeauty & wellspa

Fruit is filled with antioxidants and vitamins that are just as good for your skin as they are for your body.

"

Page 61: Wellness Energise

FIRST THINGS FIRSTThere’s nothing like a splash of cool water to get your nerve endings tingling. There’s also good reason for using cold water, especially when you understand the veritable downsides to our usual luxurious hot water:

Hot water opens your pores, which may sound like a good thing – so you can cleanse them properly – however, hot water can strip your skin of its natural oil. When the skin cells, that are normally plump and moist, shrivel up from lack of natural oil, fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. Cool water appropriately flushes away toxins and leaves your skin as it should be. It also constricts blood vessels, reducing swelling and those pesky dark circles. A cold shower will give you a whole body wake up – if you’re up for it, that is.

GET FRUITYIt seems sensible that if you can’t eat it, you really shouldn’t put it on your skin (not that you need to start munching on your facial scrub now). Fruit is filled with antioxidants and vitamins that are just as good for your skin as they are for your body. For a great wake up, use a cleanser that’s infused with fruit. Red fruit contains loads of lypocene, which protects your skin from harmful UV rays; blue and purple fruit (especially red berries) are filled to the brim with antioxidants; citrus tightens pores and removes redness from blemishes; and apples contain collagen and elastin – great for youthful looking skin.

SPICE IT UPTurmeric is certainly a versatile spice, with wide ranging health benefits. Although it can temporarily stain your skin (use it before going to bed at night), it does do wonders – it reduces acne and even scarring; contains masses of antioxidants; and evens out your skin tone. Use it as a face mask by combining organic plain yoghurt and honey with two pinches of turmeric. Leave on for 20 minutes before washing off with cool water.

GO BACK IN TIMEYou may remember a continuous supply of rosewater in your grandmother’s bedroom – it seems to have been replaced by more technologically advanced treatments now, but it’s still a great antibacterial agent that relieves inflammation and redness on your skin. It doesn’t dry your skin out and can help get rid of dark circles under your eyes.

Make your own:Fill a pot with fresh rose petals and cover them (just) with distilled water. Place a lid on the pot and set on a low heat to slowly bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiled, remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, strain and decant into a clean glass bottle.

JAVA JIVEDon’t throw away your coffee grounds after you’ve had your morning fix. Simply rub the grounds over your whole body for a caffeine rub and great exfoliating experience all in one. Add a few drops of olive oil to the mix for a smoother scrub. Make this delicious face mask for a sweet morning wake up: Mix two tablespoons of coffee grounds; two tablespoons of cocoa powder; three tablespoons of whole milk or yoghurt; and one tablespoon of honey. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes before washing off with cool water.

LIP SYNCGive your lips an energy boost and plump them up. Apply a thick layer of lip balm or moisturiser to soften your lips – leave on for 15 minutes and then wipe away excess. Use a dry soft toothbrush to gently scrub away dead skin cells. Mix half a teaspoon of fine brown sugar with a quarter teaspoon of cold-pressed oil and a drop of lemon juice. Massage the mixture into your lips using a circular motion. Wipe off residue with a damp cloth and apply moisturiser.

we love arnica

64 everything you need to live life well

We chose Arnica as our celebrated product for our Energise issue.

So many people with discomfort from injuries and stiffness to

arthritis and swelling have received tremendous relief from this fabulous natural plant.

3 reasons we love Arnica

1. TESTED THROUGH TIMEArnica has been used in healing for centuries. There are records of St. Hildegard’s writings about the healing properties of the Arnica Montana plant from the 12th century. We also know that the mountain people used it to relieve muscle aches and bruises from at least the 16th century. Although Arnica Montana is the Latin name it is also known as Leopard’s Bane, Mountain Daisy and Mountain Tobacco. It is a perennial plant that grows less than a metre tall with bright yellow daisy-like flowers that bloom in summer. It is found in the hills and

mountains of Northern and central Europe and Siberia and also grows in the North West United States.

HEALTH PROFESSION Reflexology is registered as a health profession under the Allied Health Professions Act of 1982. If it’s something you’d like to train in, you’ll need to obtain a two-year diploma from a provider registered by the Department of Higher Education & Training and accredited by the Allied Health Professions Council.

ANCIENT MODALITYIts history dates as far back as the ancient Egyptians, but the more modern form was pioneered by ear, nose and throat surgeon, Dr William Fitzgerald, the founder of Zone Therapy. His work was expanded upon by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist working in a doctor's practise using the zone therapy. After extensive research, she developed the map of the entire body on the feet - where one point on the foot corresponds to a certain part of the body. By using acupressure or massage techniques on these points, a positive effect is created in the corresponding body part.

"If you’re feeling out of kilter, don’t know why or what about, let your feet reveal the answer, find the sore spot, work it out." Eunice Ingham

THE BASICSThe first step in understanding reflexology is first understanding the structure of the feet in relation to the body. The feet are a microcosm, or a map, of the whole body. All organs and body parts are reflected in the feet in a similar arrangement to the body – the reflexes are found on the plantar (sole) and dorsal (top) aspects and along the medial (arch) and lateral sides of the feet, with their positions following a logical anatomical pattern. It’s a complimentary therapy that involves applying pressure to certain areas of the feet to create a positive effect in the corresponding part of the body.

UNBLOCKING ENERGYUsing the foot’s mini-map of the body, reflexologists work within the theory of energy pathways, which divide the body into 10 straight zones from each toe and each finger as the vital link between reflexes and the connection to organs in the body. It’s asserted that disease is caused by blockages in energy channels. The six main meridians (that penetrate the major organs) are represented in the feet, especially the toes, so stimulating the feet helps clear meridian congestion.

While modalities like acupuncture uses points located all over the body to unblock these pathways, reflexology concentrates mainly on the feet, but can also work on the hand, ears or other parts of the body to stimulate, with specific finger pressure techniques, the reflex areas.

The finger pressure techniques used on reflexes send impulses along the energy channels to unblock congestions that could manifest in disease. A reflexology treatment reduces tension, induces relaxation and enhances gland and organ functions to reset the body’s natural balance.

SELF HEALINGIt’s an holistic therapy that treats the whole body, getting to the root cause of disease and illness, as opposed to just the symptoms. It allows the body to self correct through continued treatment as part of a preventative healthy approach. In addition to reflex stimulation, practitioners offer education through lifestyle recommendations. This education, on how disease is a reflection of the meridians, creates a partnership between patient and practitioner – and this partnership often ensures patients are more likely to change their unhealthy lifestyle habits and use reflexology to clear toxins and congestions from their body.

A reflexologist is required to have insight and the ability to listen and asses – in order to make convincing suggestions that will motivate patients to take and embrace responsibility for their own health.

International Reiki author and teacher Frank Arjava Petter will be returning to South Africa in November this year to present Jikiden Reiki seminars. Jikiden Reiki is a form of Reiki that is still very close to the original method handed down by Mikao Usui. Because this branch of Reiki never left Japan, it has remained very pure.

Arjava is a vastly experienced and charismatic Reiki teacher who has spent many years researching the true origins of Reiki. He is also the Vice Representative of the Jikiden Reiki Institute of Japan.

The 5 day Shoden/Okuden course includes instruction and attunements of Reiki Levels 1 (Shoden) and 2 (Okuden) in the Japanese tradition. It is also possible to attend Shoden or Okuden only - please contact the organizer for more details in this regard. Teacher training will take place on the two days following the Shoden/Okuden seminar for those ready to progress to this level.

What is ‘Jikiden’ Reiki?

The word Jikiden means ‘direct teaching’, and refers to the traditional form of Reiki as taught by Mikao Usui and his student Chujiro Hayashi. Reiki students in the West will recognise Dr Hayashi as the teacher of Mrs Takata, the woman who brought Reiki to the West.

In 1938 a young Japanese girl named Chiyoko began her Reiki training with Hayashi sensei and completed her Teacher level a few years later. Chiyoko Yamaguchi continued to practice Reiki in Japan for over 65 years until renewed interest in the traditional methods led her to start teaching. Her son Tadao is now head of the Jikiden Reiki Institute of Japan, and continues to pass down to his students this very pure form of Reiki.

In 1999 Frank Arjava Petter, already an established Western Reiki Master and teacher living in Japan, came to hear of Mrs Yamaguchi
