Foreword

1

Foreword It is human nature to dream about the futureWhat differentiates entrepreneurs is the ability to pursue their dreams, convince others of their worth and make them become realities. The entrepreneur injects vibrant optimism into markets and industries of all types. Entrepreneurs don’t just create businesses, they change the world. They dare to dream that life could be different. Their importance is not just economic – they create jobs, improve communities all over the world and help others achieve their potential.

It takes vision and courage to launch a successful business. But only the truly gifted can drive one along the journey to market leadership. It demands passion, self belief and an extra-ordinary ability to keep going when others would give up. West Africa and indeed Africa has her fair share of this unique group of people and they should be recognised and held up as role models for others. The EY Entrepreneur of the Year award celebrates their extraordinary achievements.

The award opens up experiences that will not only grow entrepreneurial businesses, it facilitates engagements with other like minded individuals across the globe. It enriches participants by breaking new ground through our Alumni programme and our range of strategic events and workshops. That is why it is the world’s most prestigious business accolade, recognising the most exceptional among a unique group of people.

I am most honoured to invite you to be part of this programme and give us the opportunity to celebrate your remarkable achievement.

Over the past few years, the levels of interest in Africa have grown exponentially. What was, only a short while ago, a trickle of enquiries from our clients on opportunities for investment and doing business in Africa has grown into a flood.

At the same time, we are proceeding with our own growth and integration journey. Recently, we have opened new offices in Cameroon, Chad and South Sudan, and have expanded our senior-level capacity in key markets such as Nigeria, Angola, Kenya and South Africa. This has further reinforced our position as the leading professional services organization(s) in Africa.

Program overview

The EY Entrepreneur Of The YearTM was launched in West Africa in 2011. Since then it has been adding significant value to those entrepreneurs who participate by encouraging entrepreneurial action among those individuals with potential. The Entrepreneur Of The YearTM recognizes the contribution of those who motivate others with their vision, leadership and accomplishment.

5

We distinguish and credit entrepreneurs according to three categories, namely: Lifetime, Master, and Emerging. As you read through the information on the various categories, you can decide which would be the best category for you to participate in.

Lifetime: celebrates senior business leaders who have served as an entrepreneurial icon for several decades, leaving an enduring legacy.

Master: honors individuals whose achievements have made them world-class entrepreneurs. You would have to be running an organization with revenues starting from $100m to qualify for this category.

Emerging* : credits those individuals building young businesses with high potential.

* The minimum revenue threshold for participants is $1m. The selection committee will assign nominees to the relevant category in an appropriate comparable manner.
