The noisy green bus was a

lifeline when ice and snow

made travelling difficult

and even visiting nearby

relatives could be an

ordeal. It is 1955 and the 61 heads

south along Leyfield Road,

CHRISTMAS PASTby Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

passing Blackmoor

Park School on the

left (pictured).

Earlier the gritters

had been out - not

the vehicles we

have today but open

wagons carrying

men busily shovel-

ling rock salt on to

the roads.

The 61 was a fre-

quent service

launched about

1939, linking

Seaforth with south

Liverpool, but a

growing number of

people had cars.

Many of our neigh-

bours in Lisleholme

Crescent had

motors which were

regulation black.

One young man

had a red sports car

which earned him

the name Killer.

Another defied con-

vention with his

bottle-green saloon.

In those days

Christmas came

quickly. There was

no massive build-up

in the shops from

the autumn

although one family

in Deysbrook Lane

put their tinselled

tree in the window

in October.

Post war austerity

put a brake on fes-

tivities. Money had

to go a long way

and luxury was hav-

ing an orange in

your Christmas

stocking.

Coal fires roared

in sooty grates caus-

ing dreadful smogs

on days when no

breeze shifted its

ghostly presence.

Visits to Santa at

Lewis’s or T J

Hughes’s were

highlights and low-

tech toys such as

Hoop-La and

Snakes and Ladders

the rewards.

On Christmas

Day Dad and I

walked to St Mary’s

in the Village while

Mum did the turkey.

Gran and Granddad

came for tea –

grandfather had a

separate portion of

Christmas pudding

without the brandy

as he was teetotal.

We would get the

61 to visit Auntie

May and Uncle Eric

in Taggart Avenue

on Boxing Day –

the bus stopped

conveniently out-

side their door.

Uncle Eric did

hilarious impres-

sions which put us

in stitches.

We would get the

bus home clutching

our presents, avoid-

ing the open rear

entrance where the

chill air wafted into

the over-heated

interior.

Our British-made

Ekco television was

rented from Stuart

Mount Pleasant.

The tiny screen was

set in a highly-pol-

ished wooden cabi-

net.

Christmas meant

variety shows offer-

ing such popular

acts as harmony

singers The

Stargazers, relaxed

Liverpool crooner

Michael Holliday,

the rowdy Billy

Cotton Bandshow

and a talented

young Australian

called Rolf Harris.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!There are still a few weeks to go...but, as this

is our festive issue, there’s nothing like get-

ting your greeting in first. So, from all of us here at The LINK, we hope you

and yours have the Happiest Christmas ever.

We hope also that, while you are having a fantas-

tic time, you will spare a thought for those who will

find Christmas is not such a happy time...families

who have lost a loved one in the past year, people

who, for whatever reason, find themselves on their

own and those people who may have health or

money worries.

For some, Christmas can be the loneliest and most

painful time of the year, especially if it marks a first

without someone special.

If you know of someone, who may not be looking for-

ward to Christmas for one reason or another, then whyDawn Moiranot do something special on

their behalf: Invite them in for a

drink, buy someone special a

little gift, or, simply, make a

friendly phone call to see if

they are O.K. Isn’t that what the

Christmas spirit is all about?

December to meet our earlier holiday deadline.

A Big thank you to all our

customers

With our verybest wishes Moira and Dawn

We hope you

and your family,

readers and adver-

tisers alike, have

your best

Christmas yet.

We’ll be back

in January to help

you see in the

New Year.

STRANGE TALES

“Bo-Bo, be good

when you go out. Do

what Mary says,” she

chirped, fastening

the expensive leather

lead to his emerald-

encrusted collar.

A silver medallion

proclaimed Bo-Bo St

Claire1932, indicat-

ing the year of his

birth.

Mary took Bo-Bo

and walked out on to

the veranda over-

looking Cap du

Dramont. She was

spending the summer

at her aunt’s on the

Riviera before taking

up a new job in

Liverpool.

Mary was looking

forward to returning

home after spending

two years at finishing

school.

Bo-Bo yapped.

The dog annoyed her

but taking him out

gave an excuse to

escape the rambling,

claustrophobic man-

sion.

The view was

stunning – rugged

cliffs topped with

ferns and bracken,

backed by azure

seas, inviting explo-

ration.

Mary let Bo-Bo

off his lead as they

walked downhill.

Hawk moths sipped

nectar from wild-

flowers, large butter-

flies fluttered every-

where. No breeze

disturbed the sultry

air.

They reached the

empty beach where

the receding tide had

left deep pools. Mary

stared into the

depths, looking for

secrets in the waving

fronds of seaweed.

Mary decided to

sunbathe. She

secured Bo-Bo to a

rock and blissfully

lay back, feeling the

hot sun caressing her

face, arms and legs.

She was soothed

into a deep, reassur-

ing sleep. Soon huge

galleons sailed in her

dream, handsome

sailors waving to her

under huge billowing

flags.

Only the distant

yapping of a dog

spoilt the idyllic

scene. Then she felt

cool water tickling

the soles of her feet.

Mary awoke with

a start – the tide was

coming in! She sat

up, glanced around

and saw Bo-Bo’s

lead still secured to

the almost sub-

merged rock.

She stood up and

hardly dared to look.

The poor creature

was floating lifeless

in the crystal-clear

water.

Mary’s thoughts

raced. What would

she tell her aunt? It

took just a minute to

decide what to do.

She hauled out the

lifeless dog, put its

body and two large

rocks in her shawl

and dumped the bun-

dle into the deep

pool.

As the ripples

cleared, she gasped.

A ghostly man was

staring at her from

the depths of the

pool, his shocked,

questioning eyes

almost burning into

her brain.

Mary turned and

fled to the chateau to

tell how Bo-Bo had

run off and she had

searched in vain.

The local gen-

darme mustered vil-

lagers who fruitlessly

scoured the coast.

Mrs St Claire was

distraught. Mary

returned home, start-

ing work in Water

Street, as arranged.

She entered the busy

office nervously.

Her new boss was

standing with his

back to her, just head

and shoulders visible

though a glass screen.

They had never

met before but as he

turned Mary instant-

ly recognised the

clipped moustache

and staring eyes – it

was the man in the

pool.

He was staring at

her intently and

Mary realised, just

before she fainted,

that – HE KNEW.

from the charity, these are;

• Children and young people from 4 -17

years of age, who have a visual impair-

ment and possibly other disabilities benefit

from specialist education and care provid-

ed at St Vincent’s School. Other children

in this age range are supported in main-

stream schools and through independent

mobility training and shared placements

• Those who lose their sight as adults benefit

from a comprehensive range of services pro-

vided and the facilities available in our

Visual Rehabilitation Centre

• Older adults, with or without a vision

impairment, benefit from access to our

care home which includes a nursing unit

and provision for those who need pallia-

tive care.

St Vincent’s was visited by OFSTED in

2012 and found to be “outstanding”.

Diocesan inspectors also found us to be ‘out-

standing.’

For the children and adults and their fam-

ilies who benefit, the Catholic Blind

Institute has helped them to an enormous

extent, giving their future a reality due,

purely and simply, to the dedication of the

staff and carers who give so much, far and

above their call of duty, in helping their

need. In order to secure the future, we need

to positively seek funds in support of our

charitable aims.

The Charity is continually evolving its

structures and services to ensure that they

will better serve our beneficiaries and help

restrain costs. Every individual deserves a

chance. No-one really knows how far these

people can progress but because of the

work of the Catholic Blind Institute, there

is a degree of hope and independence. Your

financial help will be most important in

allowing us to continue the work we do

well into the future.

We hope that you can see the value of our

work and would really appreciate your

help. You may have heard of our local lot-

tery, the 50:50 Club whereby members

contribute a small amount each month and

can win substantial prizes as well as help-

ing the work of the charity. We are very

keen to involve the local community in our

fundraising activities. If you think you can

help in any way, please don’t hesitate to

contact us at our offices on the St Vincent’s

School site.

Tobi, Jasper and

Holly are three

Yorkshire Terriers

all aged 11 but not

related to each

other.They came in to the

care of Dogs Trust

Merseyside when,

sadly, their owner

became too unwell to

care for them. They

are a very happy little

bunch who are look-

ing for a new home

together. They do

have some minor

medical complaints

which can be covered

by the Dogs Trust fos-

ter scheme, yet

despite the odd ail-

ment they are still

active for their age

and enjoy their walks

and playing with toys.

They will be happiest

in a home where there

are no children under

the age 10.

These three friends

ideally should be

rehomed together as

they really do love

each other. They are

still full of beans for

their age and would

make a happy addi-

tion to a home.

A serious loss in

form has led to

series of poor

results and has

seen the newly

p r o m o t e d

S t o n e y c r o f t

plummet down

the league and it

has now become a

real cause for

concern for man-

ager John Leary.

This match billed

as a six pointer saw

bottom club Cheshire

Lines come to

Maiden Lane without

a win under their belt

so far in the league.

They must have

scarcely believed

their luck when

instead of encounter-

ing a fired up home

side, anxious to

break their own

sequence of defeats,

they met a timid out

of sorts disjointed

team showing an

apparent inability to

retain any effective

form of possession.

The visitors’ confi-

dence was boosted

when within the first

few minutes of the

game they were gift-

ed a goal when a

stray shot was

deflected into the

Stoneycroft net by a

home defender.

It started badly for

the Croft and got

steadily worse. Their

fragile defence

leaked more goals

and the lack lustre

performance left the

visitors euphoric as

they cruised to their

first win. The only

bright spot for the

Croft was another

two goals from Mike

Kearney.

There is no doubt

that all the

Stoneycroft players

will have to take a

long hard look at

themselves, regroup

and find the fighting

spirit of last season

and come back with

a bang in next

Saturday’s fixture

away at Ford Motors.

Manager John

Leary was philo-

sophical when he

said “I know we have

the ability in the side

to turn things round.

For some inexplica-

ble reason you go

through periods like

this were a number

of players suffer loss

of form and it hasn’t

been helped by the

amount of changes

we have been forced

to make. But the only

way we can come

through this is by

coming together,

working hard and

showing commit-

ment to a common

cause. I hope to see a

positive response in

the next game and a

from there a steady

move up the table.

LOSS OFFORM LEADSTO WORRYINGTIMES AT THE

CROFTBy Mick Titherington

South Liverpool FC’s first big game of

the season occurred at the end of

October when South travelled to sec-

ond-placed Mallaby.

As both teams were unbeaten it was always

likely to be a close-run thing and so it proved.

South fell 2-0 down after 15 minutes but recov-

ered by half-time with goals from Neil Best

and Cameron Dalton and the 2-2 draw was a

better result for South, bearing in mind their

superior goal difference.

A 6-1 win at Prescot Cables, with Alex

Woodcock grabbing a hat-trick, and a 2-1

home win against Manor Athletic, with

Woodcock getting both goals, have seen South

establish a lead at the top as we near the

halfway point. A spectacular 6-0 win at

Liverpool County FA (LCFA) Premier League

Premier Division Roma, with both Cameron

Dalton and Alex Woodcock each netting twice,

in the LCFA Challenge Cup has seen the team

drawn against Old Xaverians, our near neigh-

bours and LCFA Premier Division leaders, in

the quarter finals. South will have home advan-

tage and Old Xavs will visit Jericho Lane in

February.

The reserves have made progress in both cup

competitions that they have entered. A 3-2 win

at Warrington and District League side Orford,

with goals from Francis Evans, Mitchell

McNally and Ross Kennedy, has seen the team

make the quarter finals where they will play

either league rivals Gateacre or Rainhill Town

in December. A 3-0 win over lowly Upton AA

Reserves in the league cup, with two goals

from Paul Wilson and one from Pat Kelly, has

earned a quarter-final tie at home to Neston

Nomads in December.

The youth team have also put themselves

into a good position in the West Cheshire

League Youth Division courtesy of a superb 5-

2 win at nearest rivals Bootle. Four goals from

leading scorer Sharif Yusuf and one from mid-

fielder Anthony Marlow turned the tables on

Bootle who were leading 2-1 at half-time.

Unfortunately, a very disappointing 3-0 defeat

at home to Formby Juniors saw the team elim-

inated from the LCFA Youth Cup.

A good run of

form has seen

the Alder FC

Veterans team

push up the

league and they

currently lie

fifth, five points

behind the lead-

ers.

The month has

seen an impressive

3-2 victory against

Aintree Villa in the

cup, followed by a

great 3-1 league

victory against

Remyca. Robbie

Backhouse was on

the score sheet, and

Mark Carney

scored two, his

second a twenty

five yard thunder-

bolt that gave the

keeper no chance.

ALDER FC - VETSTAKE CENTRE STAGE

The only disap-

pointment in the

month was a 1-0

defeat to

Shakespeare after

conceding an

unfortunate own

goal.

The first team

has had mixed for-

tunes with a 3-1

win in the cup

against Rylands -

John Boardman

netting - but were

unlucky to lose 1-0

against league

leaders Kingsley

United. Despite

goals from Paul

O’Hare and Mike

Hutton they bowed

out of the Junior

County Cup to St

Helens opposition

Sidac 3-2.

The second team

were also eliminat-

ed from The

County Cup with

regular marksman

Anthony Wong

scoring twice

against Farnworth

Griffin - the game

ended 2-2 and

went to penalties.

Unfortunately one

miss proved vital

as the penalties

ended 5-4 in the

o p p o s i t i o n ’ s

favour. However,

much needed

league points were

gained in a 4-4

draw with Old

Xavs and a 1-1

draw with Holy

Cross, with Scott

Madina amongst

the goals.

Finally the third

team gained a 1-1

draw against

Leyfield, and fol-

lowed this up with

a fine 4-2 victory

against Wood

Street - Dean Wesh

amongst the goals.

They now sit mid-

table and will be

looking to push up

the league.

One final com-

ment this month is

to thank everyone

who supported the

recent charity

night at the club,

and to give our

best wishes to

Bonnie for his

forthcoming oper-

ation.
