WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTTHERAPHY?

Counseling and psychotherapy are similar in many ways. Counseling helps you to manage crises in life using skills you already have. Psychotherapy seeks to resolve more deeply rooted problems, ones that seem to have become embedded in our personality. Psychotherapy usually takes place over a longer period of time.

Inherently they are both creative processes where the quality of the relationship between therapist and client is at the heart of their success. I aim to provide a safe, confidential and non - judgmental environment in which you can feel able to explore whatever may be troubling you.

ABOUT

I am an Integrative Psychotherapist who is UKCP registered and I abide by their codes and ethics. As part of this I am committed to my own on-going development.

I trained at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, gaining a Masters in Adult Integrative Psychotherapy and Diploma in Adolescent Counseling. I did my clinical training at Whipps Cross Hospital Acute Psychiatric Unit (Naseberry Court), in the Counseling Department at London Metropolitan University and with the charity Kid’s Company.

I have been running my own London based practice since 2005. I also work for various charities as a consultant running groups for adults and adolescents on many aspects of personal development and as a Sessional counselor. Before this I was an actor.

I have particular experience of working with issues such as depression, anxiety (performance anxiety), stress, divorce or separation, self-harm, childhood issues, bereavement or loss, cultural issues, work/life balance, loneliness, low self-esteem, eating disorders, relationship problems, anger management, sexuality, trauma, stage fright, work place issues, times of transition, personal growth and with clients who are trying to find meaning in their lives.

THE THERAPHY

I work face to face with individuals who are struggling with a variety of emotional, relational and identity difficulties. Sessions can be on a short term or longer-term basis, depending on the wishes and needs of each client. Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place weekly.

My aim is to help you with whatever emotional and psychological difficulties you may be experiencing in your life. Listening to your difficulties often involves my helping you to reach a better understanding of who you are and how you relate to others. To help you identify negative patterns of relationship and behavior which you now may be feeling ready to explore.

“And the day came when the need to remain closed became more painful than the risk to open” Anais Nin

Therapy has been described as a way of allowing an individual to properly ‘meet’ oneself in order to reach a clearer understanding of who you really. This exploration of self is rarely something we can do by ourselves. My experience has convinced me that talking about your concerns with someone trained to listen to them (and respond to them) in a particular way, can often be hugely helpful. It won’t ‘cure’ you and it won’t erase painful experiences from the past, but it can equip you to move forward with greater ease and the potential for future positive change.

An integrative approach takes the stance that no single theory is universally accepted in current psychotherapeutic thought. In my own practice, this means that I do not approach you, or the work we do together, from one fixed theoretical perspective but in a more flexible spirit, so that your own unique way of being with yourself and with others – and with me in the consulting room – can unfold and be met respectfully
