Westminster College can’t be put in a box.

On the one hand, we offer the best features

of a small liberal arts college: a residential campus

environment, small classes, personalized attention, and

a primary focus on learning. On the other hand, we

resemble a comprehensive university, offering a variety

of professional and career-oriented programs at the

undergraduate and graduate levels, a blending of the

practical with the theoretical and a significant presence

of non-traditional-age and commuting students.

While our features are complex, our focus is clear:

helping students at every level and in every program

acquire the skills they need to experience success in a

rapidly changing world. To that end, we’re constantly

analyzing and, when appropriate, adjusting our creative

approaches to teaching and learning. We are, then,

no staid ivory tower; rather, we are constantly evolving,

but always with an eye to helping students move from

where they are to where they want to be.

Our DiStinctive MiSSiOn

Page 5: Westminster College Viewbook

Our GrADuAte PrOGrAMS range across the career and

educational spectrums, from business, nursing, and education to communication

and counseling. Not only is each program different but, in truth, each individual

student’s experience is different, thanks to our personal philosophy, our flexible

options, our tailored approach. ❖ That said, every program

in every school shares common traits. You will learn from faculty who know their

fields because they are leaders in their fields; they walk the walk. You will engage

with a diverse array of dedicated peers who bring passion

and purpose to real-world, hands-on learning. You will

benefit from the latest technologies and facilities. And, less tangible but no small

matter, you will bask in Westminster’s stellar reputation.

Intense class discussions. Collaborative team projects. Opportunities to network with leaders in the profession. Graduate students at Westminster don’t sit on the sidelines passively taking notes; they’re right in the middle of the field.

Whatever your program or career path, as a

graduate student at Westminster your education

will be active, not passive; engaged, not distant. Business

students develop real business plans and marketing

strategies; nursing students treat real patients with real

health problems; education students put theories to

work with real students in real classrooms; counseling

students counsel clients with real issues; communica-

tions students work on projects which tap their oral and

written communications skills. And on and on.

As you will discover from day one, then, Westminster

draws no artificial lines between the classroom and

the workplace; between teacher and student; between

what you learn and how you apply what you learn to

your work in the world. You will be so deeply involved

in your education—both inside and outside the class-

room—you will learn what you need to know, and you

will truly own what you learn.

focuses on applied learning

from Day One. The professors bring

real-life experiences to the classroom; they

know who you are, and they’ll always go the

extra mile.” —Darin Parker, MBa, 2007

Spend a few hours on this campus and you will

soon sense the vibrancy of the Westminster

community. The atmosphere is cooperative, not

cut-throat; the welcome is genuine, not canned.

Your professors really care about your growth as a

professional; that is why they are here. Your peers

view you as a colleague with something to offer, not

as just another face in the classroom. The positive

interactions create a one-plus-one-equals-more-

than-two learning environment.

Good things happen when you belong to a vibrant

and welcoming community as a graduate student.

You’re more open to learning everything you

can and to sharing everything you know. You

develop friendships which help ease the stress

of heavy workloads and pressing life demands.

And, important on all counts, you greatly expand

your professional networking opportunities, an

invaluable asset whatever your current academic

program or future career goals.

Success in any profession requires the ability to interact well with other people. Westminster’s graduate programs encourage ongoing interactions among students and faculty, often leading to enduring friendships.

“I like the family feeling at

Westminster, the camaraderie

among the faculty and the

students. And I love creating rapport

with patients, earning their trust.”

To illustrate Westminster’s “record of success,”

it would be tempting to note the 100 percent

pass rate on nursing exams or the 100 percent teacher

placement rate in schools or this new start-up company

launched by a Westminster MBA or that new position

attained at a public relations firm by a recent MPC.

Tempting, but insufficient. The bottom line is the

bottom line, of course, but it is more instructive for

students to listen to the stories of those who have come

before: our current (and former) graduate students.

We encourage you to talk to some students, especially

former students. What were their expectations and

did Westminster meet them? Were the faculty really

experienced in their fields and, if so, how did that

experience enhance their teaching? Were their peers

collegial and supportive? Do they still keep up with

them? Did they find that the Westminster name holds

great value in the professional marketplace? In sum, how

did Westminster help them go where they wanted to go?

A recOrD Of SucceSS

At Westminster, “success” isn’t just about getting a good job or making a good living. It is about striving for excellence, maintaining ethical standards, contributing to the community.

A recOrD Of SucceSS “With a Master of Professional

Communication from

Westminster, your resume

goes right to the top of the

stack. This program is great for anyone in the

communications field.” —Helen langan, MPC, 2007

Are you the kind of person who is always

seeking a new challenge, a bigger adventure,

a better life? Do you thrive on keeping busy, even

during those times when it seems that there just

aren’t enough hours in the day? Do you look at the

leaders in your field and say to yourself, “I’m just

as good. I’m primed to take the next step. I’m ready

to lead”? Do you want to be part of an educational

community that will give you the support you need

to attain the goals you’ve set?

For every one of our graduate programs, we’re

looking for people who crave ever greater challenges

and seek ever more responsibility. We’re looking

for people who will challenge the faculty to deliver

their best and, at the same time, enhance the

educational experience for their peers. We’re

looking, in sum, for leaders.

It is invigorating to be surrounded by students and professors who are striving to make the most of their talents and opportunities. Ours is a culture of great expectations.
