Monday 31 st October 2016 Dear parents and carers, I hope all families were able to acknowledge Grandparent s Day yesterday. This NSW government initiative is a celebration of the vital role that grandparents play in our society, as custodians of family and cultural memories and as providers of care and love to their children and grandchildren. Grandparents Day recognises the irreplaceable role grandparents have in their families and in the wider community. It was wonderful to see so many families at our first Kindergarten Orientation session two weeks ago. The children settled very well into the classroom environment and our new families learnt a lot about preparing for school. Further on in the newsletter, you’ll find the remaining dates for our 2017 Kindergarten Orientation. Next week, all of our year 5 students will participate in a leadership day, where they will have the opportunity to work in teams, discuss leadership qualities, plan and prepare for our upcoming 2017 school leader elections. This week, Leeroy and Baileigh will be joined by students from schools in the Blacktown City area in a public speaking challenge. The topics that students choose to talk about are related to the theme: My Voice, My Place, My Story. Following on from this, on 16 November, 10 of our students will be involved in the Friendly Community Conference to be held at Rooty Hill RSL. They will be joined by students from other schools to celebrate children as active participants in their lives and in their local community. Students will have the opportunity to talk about what matters most to them and what they’d like for the future. Monday 31st October 2016 Dear parents and carers,

I hope all families were able to acknowledge Grandparent’s Day

yesterday. This NSW government initiative is a celebration of the vital

role that grandparents play in our society, as custodians of family and

cultural memories and as providers of care and love to their children

and grandchildren. Grandparent’s Day recognises the irreplaceable

role grandparents have in their families and in the wider community.

It was wonderful to see so many families at our first Kindergarten

Orientation session two weeks ago. The children settled very well into

the classroom environment and our new families learnt a lot about

preparing for school. Further on in the newsletter, you’ll find the

remaining dates for our 2017 Kindergarten Orientation.

Next week, all of our year 5 students will participate in a leadership

day, where they will have the opportunity to work in teams, discuss

leadership qualities, plan and prepare for our upcoming 2017 school

leader elections.

This week, Leeroy and Baileigh will be joined by students from

schools in the Blacktown City area in a public speaking challenge.

The topics that students choose to talk about are related to the theme:

My Voice, My Place, My Story.

Following on from this, on 16 November, 10 of our students will be

involved in the Friendly Community Conference to be held at Rooty

Hill RSL. They will be joined by students from other schools to

celebrate children as active participants in their lives and in their local

community. Students will have the opportunity to talk about what

matters most to them and what they’d like for the future.

K-6K

Did you know there are many different ways to tell a story?

K-6K spent last term learning to use

many different methods to tell

familiar children’s stories.

We made our own version

of ‘The Three little Pigs’

as a PowerPoint

presentation and shared it

with our Preschool

Buddies.

Our teddy bears became

actors in our own version of

‘The Three Bears’ which we

filmed.

We enjoyed two stories about water: ‘Mr Archimedes’ Bath’

and ‘Who Sank the Boat?’ We acted out ‘Mr Archimedes

Bath’ to see how the water went up and down.

Page 5: WHALAN PUBLIC SCHOOL...2016/10/31  · Gingerbread Man.’ Grandparent’s Breakfast Thank you to all the amazing grandparents and great-grandparents that came along to

After reading the story ‘Who Sank

the Boat?’ we made boats from

alfoil, floated them and used stones

to help us understand sinking and

floating.

Joshua told us the answer - ‘they ALL sank the boat!

We used pictures from

favourite stories, put them in

order, and then used the

pictures to help us tell the story in our own words.

We acted out ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ with Rylie as

Max, and all the rest of us enjoyed making a wild rumpus as

‘wild things.’

When we compared stories we used the terms ‘hero’ and

‘villain’. Our favourite heroes are Batman, Superman and

Captain America and our favourite villain is the fox in ‘The

Gingerbread Man.’
