We have an active cultural scene with a strong Drama Department, three school choirs, orchestra, Kapa Haka group, and band providing regular performances. The school’s ‘Fideliter’ jazz band operates in conjunction with Whangarei Girls’ High School and features at public functions in and around Whangarei.

Other ensembles include chamber music groups, rock bands and guitar ensembles. The Smokefree Rockquest is an annual event with as many as six student-led bands entering the competition.

The school has first-class recreational facilities. There are three Rugby fields (we have a proud history having produced several All Blacks) and a Football field, in a magnificent park-like setting. For summer sports, there is a full-sized swimming pool, tennis courts and cricket pitches, with 4 practice nets. Also available is a well-equipped Gymnasium for Volleyball and Basketball, a weight-training room, and Table Tennis facilities.

There is also a major emphasis on Outdoor Education centred round a campus programme. There is a senior ski trip every year and a week-long camp for selected Year 10 students at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre near Tongariro National Park.

On arrival at Whangarei Boys’ High School, each boy is assigned to a Whanau group. All boarders are assigned to Carruth Whanau (along with some day boys).
