sir edmund barton, australian politician and judge, was the first prime minister of australia and a justice of the high court of australia. He was born on 18 january 1849 in the sydney suburb of glebe. Edmund was the ninth child of william barton and mary louise barton. He went to school at fort street high school and sydney grammar school. On a cricket trip to newcastle in 1870, he met jane mason ross, whom he married in 1877.
